Scilla Maritima / Scille Maritime [Sea Squill, Sea Onion]

Paris: Imprimerie de Didot jeune, 1802. Stipple engraving, printed in colour and finished by hand, engraved by de Gouy. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection inLes Liliacéesfrom which this work comes.Les Liliacéesis one of two Redouté masterworks, the other being Les Roses . These works demonstrate the appropriateness of the accolade "Raphael of Flowers", for one is constantly impressed by the exquisite compositional sense and clarity of vision. More than with any other painter, one sees in Redouté's flowers living, breathing beings at their most beautiful moment.Cf. Nissen BBI 1597; cf.Great Flower Books (1990), p 128; cf.         Byblis, A Tragedy

2 p.l., 67 pp. Small 4to, orig. wrappers (a bit of foxing). London: [Privately] Printed by W. Bulmer, 1802. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed on the upper wrapper "For Lady Mount Cashell at the Aquila Nera" in what is quite certainly the hand of the author. The "Aquila Nera" in the inscription is very probably the same inn at Livorno where the Shelley family stayed for a week - arriving on the 17th of June 1819 - while searching for a villa. The inn seems to be have a favorite stop for English travellers while travelling in Tuscany. We know that Drummond and Lady Mount Cashell were both in Italy in the second half of 1802, close to Livorno. Drummond (1770?-1828), Scottish diplomat, classical scholar, and M.P., was very influential in the development of the ideas of the Shelley. Drummond's researches into comparative mythology and, especially, his sceptical opinions on the Bible influenced a generation of free thinkers, including Shelley. Drummond's Academical Questions (1805), a manifesto for immaterialism, convinced Shelley to abandon his French materialist philosophical beliefs. Lady Mount Cashell (1773-1835), born Margaret King, had Mary Wollstonecraft as her tutor, who inculcated republican sympathies in her student. Later, Lady Mount Cashell became an intimate friend of Mary Shelley, the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft, and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley. While travelling in Europe, Lady Mount Cashell met George William Tighe, an Irishman, and they fell madly in love. She left her husband and children in 1803, travelled in Italy with Tighe - calling herself "Mrs. Mason," taking the name from Mary Wollstonecraft's Original Stories from Real Life. Claire Clairmont remembered her as to have studied medicine in Jena dressed as a man. Tighe and "Mrs. Mason" finally settled in Pisa and received the Shelleys, introducing them to the intellectual and social world of their adopted city. This copy bears authorial changes: on page 35, one line of text has been completely erased. On page 40, Drummond has made three corrections. Fine copy in original state. Rare. Preserved in a box.

Dictionnaire raisonné de Bibliologie [with]: Supplément

Three folding printed tables. xxix, 472 pp.; 2 p.l., 450 pp., 3 leaves of errata; x, 373 pp. Three vols. 8vo, later red half-morocco & marbled boards, t.e.g., others uncut. Paris: Villier [Vols. I & II]; A.A. Renouard [Vol. III], 1802-02-04. First edition, Vols. I & II are one of fifteen sets printed on papier vélin bleuâtre, of this work which gives, in dictionary form, information concerning the various aspects of bibliography, book production, the history of books and manuscripts, etc., etc. Although more than 150 years old, it is a most interesting reference tool, of which many articles are still useful - if not essential - especially those on libraries, collectors, and bibliographers. To pick at random one of many examples: where else can be found a ten-page article on the Abbé Rive, the famous 18th-century bibliographer, with a list of his publications and unpublished writings? This is a fascinating set, having belonged to the great bibliographer and bookseller A.A. Renouard, with a number of interesting items specially bound in the first volume: 1. The eight-page Prospectus for the book, printed at Vesoul. On the lower margins of the prospectus Peignot has written to Renouard asking for details of his book on Aldus as he would like to make use of the information in his work, of which volume one will shortly appear. He mentions that he had printed 1000 copies plus 15 on papier fin (this present set is one of them), of which 8 are spoken for, but if Renouard would like one or two copies, Peignot must know. 2. A.L.s (3 pp.) addressed to Renouard in Paris, dated from Naples 16 July 1811, written by one Duyrat de Boisset [? possibly from Nîmes, where there was a bookseller of that name] about the detailed organization and the personnel involved in the unrolling and decipherment of the Herculaneum papyri. 3. Translation (6pp., possibly in Renouard's hand) of the notice on the library of St. Mark's extracted "de l'appendice italien à la traduction du Spectateur de M. Maltebrun. No. IV" because "la notice de M. G. Peignot sur la Bibliothèque de S. Marc dans son Dictionnaire bibliologique ayant été trouvée insuffisante, on a jugé à propos de publier celle-ci." This is a reference to Le Spectateur ou variétés historiques, littéraires, a short-lived periodical edited by Conrad de Malte-Brun which was published 1815-16. 4. A.L. s (4 pp.) from Peignot to Renouard dated from Vesoul 18 January 1808: Peignot is sending some books and an engraving plus two sheets of Dict. des Brulés. "You had asked me for three, but the 8th [sheet] of Vol. 2 I simply do not have. I have included in the same little packet a copy of the edition of Meibomius in translation, which one day will be rare, because the police at Besançon have had the whole edition seized, and I am assured that not even 20 copies escaped. For myself I have 6 copies, which the printer had given me before the catastrophe*. I include also 'les pensées de Shakespeare par Nodier…I received from Besançon Les apothéoses et imprecations de Pythagore, also by Nodier." "C'est un in 4o imprimé en capitales, style lapidaire…au nombre de 17 exemplaires, avec le nom du souscripteur auquel l'exemplaire est destiné**. He mentions the forthcoming sale of the library of one M. Duzier, very rich in books on the Franche-Comté and discusses a shortfall in delivery of "la petite collection des stereotypes papier velin…J'ai fais cartonner à dos de maroquin et à toutes marges l'exemplaire [of Lucan] que vous m'avez envoyé, ainsi que le Cicéron, et la bible de Mortier." Peignot asks for other books to be delivered to an address in Vesoul. He also asks about the prospectus already sent and discusses his account of travel literature and attendant bibliography. He mentions his financial state. *This is the edition of the French translation of Johann Heinrich Meibom's (1590-1655), De l'Utilité de la Flagellation dans la Medicine et dans les Plaisirs du Marriage, published with the fictitious imprint "Londres 1801," but actually printed at Besançon where it attained some notoriety which led to its suppression. **Les apothéoses et imprecations de Pythagore was published by Charles Nodier with the imprint "A Crotone," but again published in Besançon in 1808. 5. Copy of a letter from Renouard to Peignot on the subject of his work on Latin writers which he counsels to have printed at Dijon rather than Paris "where you can keep an eye on everything and where the printing shops are superior to those of Vesoul or Besançon." 6. "Copie d'une lettre écrite" [by Renouard] "à M. Peignot le 23 floréal ou 12-15 mai 1804" (7 pp.) containing a detailed examination and criticism of entries in Peignot's Essai de curiosités bibliographiques (Paris: A.A. Renouard, 1804). The letter ends "Voici les observations que m'a suggerées un examen rapide, comme ells sont uniquement pour vous j'ai cru pouvoir les écrire à la hâte…". Provenance: A.A. Renouard (1765-1853) and A.R.A. Hobson. Fine set. ? N.B.G., Vol. 39, col. 462-"ce recueil, important et utile, fruit de douze années de travail.".

Bibliotheca Fageliana A Catalogue of the valuable and extensive Library of the Greffier Fagel, of the Hague

which will be sold by Auction, by Mr. Christie…on Monday, March 1, 1802, and the Twenty-nine following Days. xii, 490 pp. 8vo, cont. calf (well-rebacked to match), gilt fillet round sides, spine gilt, green morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Printed at Barker & Son, 1802. A rare auction catalogue; the collection was purchased before the sale en bloc by Trinity College, Dublin. The Fagel library, formed over the course of almost two centuries by a politically powerful Dutch family, today is one of the most important collections at Trinity College, Dublin. "The Fagel library was the product of a century of rich Amsterdam taste, remarkable fo its large collection of maps and of European topography and views, though its ten thousand political pamphlets may have been the principal attraction for the College. Traditional Dutch interest in gardens was represented by de luxe copies of botanical works with the plates illuminated and the titles lettered in gold, and by volumes of drawings of flowers by Nicolas Robert and of tulips by a native artist, the latter annotated with the prices paid for Semper Augustus and other varieties during the tulip mania."-Hobson, Great Libraries, pp. 180-82. "While Henrik Fagel, Greffier or Chief Minister of Holland, was in England on a diplomatic mission during the winter of 1794-95, his country was overrun by French revolutionary forces, preventing his return to his family and home in The Hague. Initially his property was sequestrated but it was released by mid 1798, and his art collections and library were shipped to London where Fagel, in straightened financial circumstances, had determined to sell them. Through the good offices of John Foster, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons and later described as 'the original proposer of the scheme', money was made available in May 1798 by the Erasmus Smith Charity in Dublin for the purchase of the library for Trinity. There was a delay in putting this scheme into effect and Fagel determined to sell it by public auction, the sale to start on 1 March 1802. The catalogue of almost 10,000 lots…created a sensation and must have galvanized the Dublin party, for they made a successful bid for the entire library in February. On 6 March the Erasmus Smith Charity released enough funds to cover Fagel's asking price of 8000 pounds sterling and the cost of transportation."-Vincent Kinane, "The Fagel Collection" in Trinity College Dublin (ed. by Peter Fox), Dublin, [1986], p. 158-(& see the rest of the article). This catalogue documents the fact that London, along with Paris, was increasingly considered to be the principal book auction center (Amsterdam had fallen behind. The Dutch heirs of this vast library had it shipped to Christie's, in spite of the cost. Very good copy from the library of Prof. T.A. Birrell.

Paris, Rouen, & Caen: Belin, Surosne, Gueffier; (Rouen:) Vallée; (Caen:) Mannoury, 1802. Tall 8vo (231 x 148 mm). 45 pp., fold-out hand-colored engraved plate, by Gaitte. Tables in text. Small tear and slight darkening at plate fold, corner of title stained. Untrimmed, original orange pastepaper wrappers, modern case.*** early probability theory: only edition, very rare, of a curious statistical analysis of the psychology of gambling, and of the probabilities involved in the ancient card game of Trente et un, or thirty-one, known under various other names in English including "scat." The goal of the game, which can be played by up to 9 players, is to collect cards in a single suit adding up to 31. This sounds as simple as the calculations of an advanced player are complex. The author arrives at these analyses only on p. 32, after a long introduction or digression containing a mathematical analysis of the addictive nature of gambling. His rather mocking tone towards his fellow gamblers, and their vain hopes for tricks that might lead to victory, is justified by the conclusion of his analysis, in which he states that "We are obliged to recognize, after all of the highly exact research that we have undertaken, that all of the calculations of the chances of black versus red cannot take back from the house [banquier] the slightest portion of its advantage; and that the number of different series of moves that a game in 26 turns can contain, is so prodigious that one would have to count up to several tens of millions of chances or different strategies..." (p. 42, my translation). An attractive large folding plate, title "Télégraphe du [image of a four cards]" provides a visual depiction of a game, using an imaginary wood table or long board with moveable slats. OCLC locates a single copy, at the BnF; not in the standard game or arithmetic bibliographies, nor in Kaplan collection of Cards and Games (sale, Christie's 2006).

A Treatise on the Culture and Management of Fruit-Trees; in which a new method of pruning and training is fully described

London: printed by Nichols and Son, for T. N. Longman and O. Rees; T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies; and J. Debrett,, 1802. To which is added, a new and improved edition of "Observations on the diseases, defects, and injuries, in all kinds of fruit and forest trees." With an account of a particular method of cure, Published by Order of Government. Quarto (269 x 210 mm). Contemporary tree calf, red morocco label, smooth spine with gilt triple rules, edges speckled blue. Bound without the final advert leaf. 13 folding engraved plates. Leveson-Gower ownership signature to title. Bottom corner of rear board bumped, two tiny ink stains to fore edge of text block, occasional mild spotting. An excellent copy. First edition. Forsyth (1737?1804), for whom the forsythia was named, was superintendent of the royal gardens at St. James and Kensington. The Observations on the Diseases, Defects, and Injuries of Fruit and Forest Trees had been separately published in 1791. The "particular method of cure" was a "plaister", or paste, whose application would, Forsyth asserted, cause new wood to grow and bind to the old. His invention had come to the attention of the authorities charged with procurement of sound wood for naval use, and after preliminary investigation he was paid £1500 to reveal the composition of this mixture. The success of the work was immediate, and it reached seven editions by 1824, though an attack by Thomas Knight in 1802 on Forsyth's paste, which Knight asserted was neither new nor effective, led to a long and bitter debate which severely damaged Forsyth's reputation.

Dumont, a Swiss writer and journalist, had met Bentham at the house of Lord Shelburne in 1788. There followed an enduring relationship in which Dumont translated and edited many of Bentham's works, acting at the same time as Bentham's informal literary agent.         Veduta dell'Isola di Portoferraio

Dim.: 22.9x16.5 cm. 9 volumes: lxx, 691 + [iv], 671 + [iv], cxviii, 619 + vi, 704 + [iv], 732 + [iv], 656 + [iv], 808 + [iv], 845 + iv, 122, [ii] pp. Binding: full parchment with red and green labels, and gilt tools on spine. Illustrated with prints representing Homer on the first volume and Achilles on the second; engravings at the beginning of each of the 24 chapters, at the end of the two first volumes and 5 hors text folded prints depicting old manuscripts of the Illiad. All the engravings are explained on pages lxiii (63) to lxx (70) of the first volume. Splendid edition with a very clear print and beautiful fonts on high quality linen paper. Trimmed on top edge. The two first volumes include the Greek text of Iliad, with observations and notes in Latin, preceded by an important foreword which summarises in detail the contents of the eight volumes, describing the context of the Homeric studies at the time and the author's method. The third volume contains the translation of the Iliad into Latin and notes. Volumes four to eight contain a wide range of variants, several valuable annotations, explanations and studies of difficult stages. Volume nine contains the index of Greek and Latin words, and of the quoted authors, having been made by E.A.G. Graefenhan (this index is seldom found together with the work). This is a rare first edition of one of the most important works about the Iliad made by one of the most influent and innovator European philologists. There were a second and third editions of this work by the University of Oxford in 1821 and 1834 respectively. Christian Gottlob Heyne (1729-1812)
