John Playfair was a Scottish mathematician and geologist best known for his defence of James Hutton's geological theories. This highly influential book, first published in 1802, contains Playfair's clarification and summary of Hutton's geological concepts. Playfair explains Hutton's theories on erosion and geothermal heat in rock formation and the concept of uniformitarianism in geology, illustrating these theories with his own observations on types of rock strata. Playfair's explanation was instrumental in popularising Hutton's geological theories, many of which are now recognised as key principles of modern geology. [i.e. Voyage of Fleet Captain Sarychev Across the Northeastern Part of Siberia, the Icy Sea and the Eastern Ocean, for Eight Years, during the Geographical and Astronomical Maritime Expedition under the Command of Fleet Captain Billings, from 1785 to 1793. Part I… Part II]

St. Petersburg: Typ. of Johann Carl Schnoor, 1802. Two parts bound together. [8], xii, 187, [5], [2]; [4], 192, [2] pp. 25x20 cm. With a copper engraved vignette on the title page and a folding table. Period style full leather, gilt tooled borders on both boards and the spine; gilt lettered title label on the spine; new endpapers; all edges speckled. Owner's ink stamp on the half title; errata page of part II with minor tears neatly restored, otherwise a very good copy. First edition. Text volume of the rare official Russian account of Joseph Billings' expedition to the Northeast coast of Siberia, Bering Strait, the Aleutian Islands and Alaska in 1785-1794. The goal of the expedition was to survey and map the coast of the Arctic Ocean from the Kolyma River mouth to the Bering Strait (the task which hadn't been accomplished by the Great Northern Expedition) and to ascertain the possibility of a passage to the Pacific Ocean along the Arctic coast of Siberia (Northeast Passage), to find out if there was a land north of the Medvezhyi [Bear] Islands in the East-Siberian Sea, and to survey the ocean area between the shores of Siberia and Alaska. Sarychev was one of Billings' chief assistants (together with Robert Hall) and made the main contribution to the expedition's results in terms of discovery and survey. In the winter of 1785-87 he surveyed and mapped several mountain ranges in Yakutia (Suntar-Khayata, Moma, Chersky and Verkhoyansky ranges, Nerskoye plateau and others), supervised the construction of four of five expedition vessels - 'Yasashna' and 'Pallas' (for the exploration of the Arctic Siberian coast from the mouth of the Kolyma River); and 'Slava Rossii' and 'Dobroye Namereniye' (for the exploration of the North Pacific Ocean from Okhotsk). During the short navigation along the Arctic Siberian coast in the summer of 1787 on 'Yasashna' and 'Pallas' (the ships couldn't proceed far due to the pack ice), Sarychev ascertained that the coast line was in fact 2 degrees to the south from the line shown on the contemporary maps, surveyed sea depths and ice; at the Bolshoy Baranov Cape (east of the Kolyma River mouth) he made the first ever Arctic archaeological excavations. In 1789 together with Captain Fomin he described the whole western coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. In September 1789 together with Billings he discovered the St. Jonas' Island in the Sea of Okhotsk, in summer 1790 on board the 'Slava Rossii' Sarychev visited and described Andreanof, Fox, Shumagin, and Semidi Islands of the Aleutian chain, Kodiak Island and the Chugatsky Bay (Prince William Sound) on the Alaskan mainland from the Kenai Peninsula to the mouth of the Copper River. In 1791 he mapped the Commander Islands, Pribilof Islands, St. Matthew and St. Lawrence Islands, discovered the Hall Island (Bering Sea), and surveyed the Alaskan shore near Cape Rodney. The same year Sarychev's subordinate, sergeant of geodezy Khudiakov discovered a group of small islands off the north shore of the Alaska Peninsula which were later named Kudiakof Islands after him (Glenn, Operl and Neumann Islands). In August 1791 Billings landed with a small party in St. Lawrence Bay and proceeded across the Chukotka Peninsula to the Nizhnekolymsk. Sarychev returned to Unalaska and in February 1792 and surveyed and mapped it; many of the geographical names given by Sarychev are still on the Unalaska's modern maps (Captains Bay and others). The account of Sarychev's eight-year travel was published in 1802 which made him the first Russian writer of the maritime genre. The first part is occupied with a detailed description of the expedition's travels in 1787-90 across Yakutia, navigation up the Kolyma River and in the Arctic Ocean, voyage to and wintering in Kamchatka. The second part is dedicated to the 1790-92 travels to the Aleutian Islands, Alaska and the Bering Strait. The account is especially valuable because of its extensive description of Unalaska and other Aleutian Islands, and important original notes on the Aleuts, Inuit of Alaska and Siberian Asia, Kamchadals, Chikchi, and Yakuts; the account contains the results of meteorological, hydrological and astronomical observations, notes on the nature of Eastern Siberia, Kamchatka, Alaska and the islands of the Bering Sea. Sarychev was the first one to presume that the Aleutian and Commodore Islands were parts of the same chain; he also suggested that there was an island north of the Chukotka Peninsula (Wrangel Island, to be officially discovered only in 1867 by Thomas Long). The book was translated into German (1805), English (1806), and Dutch (1808). Lada-Mocarski clearly valued the quality of Sarychev's account of the expedition more than that of Martin Sauer's (An account of a geographical and astronomical expedition to the northern parts of Russia… London, 1802): «Martin Sauer was Secretary to Billings' expedition and, as stated on the t.p., his narrative was composed from the original, presumably official papers. In view of Mortimer's remarks regarding Billings' ineptitude (in Observations; no. 48), which must have influenced at least some of his decisions and thinking, one is inclined to rely heavily on Captain Sarychev's narrative of this voyage [Sauer] was very complimentary of Sarychev» (Lada-Mocarski about Sauer's account, no. 58). The engraved vignette on the title page represents two sailing ships in the icy sea. «Between the pp. 174 and 175 in Part I there is a large folding table giving the number of inhabitants on Fox and Andreanov Islands, as well as the size and the kind of fur tribute levied by the Russians on these inhabitants in 1791» (Lada-Mocarski, 57). In 1811 in addition to his account Sarychev published in St. Petersburg a detailed description of Billings' travel across the Chukotka peninsula in August 1791 - February 1792, and the voyage of Captain Robert Hall on the ship «Cherny Orel» (Black Eagle) to Unalaska and Bering Strait in May-September 1791; as both voyages received only short overviews in Sauer's account (Puteshestvie Kapitana Billingsa chrez Chukotskuyu Zemliu ot Beringova Proliva do Nizhnekolymskago Ostroga i Plavanie Kapitana Galla na Sudne Chernom Orle po Severovostochnomu Okeanu v 1791 godu, St. Petersburg, 1811). «This is one of the fundamental and very rare early books on the Aleutian Islands and particularly on Unalaska, the description of which will be found to occupy practically all of part II. The results of Captain Sarychev's observations and measurements are embodied in several maps of the atlas accompanying the description of the voyage - which lasted eight years - and in masterful engravings of views of natives and of their habitations and ceremonies. See also no. 58 Sauer's account of the same expedition, which have some information not included in Sarychev's work. It is in English. On the whole, Sarychev's relations is to be preferred, primarily because of a much greater number of maps and plates.» (Lada-Mocarski). Sarychev «…published the most complete and reliable charts of the Aleutian Islands, a work upon which, as far as the territory included in Sarychef's own observations is concerned, even Tebenkof could make few if any improvements. Their reliability stands acknowledged to the present day. But few corrections have been made in his special charts of harbors by modern surveys…» (Bancroft, History of Alaska. San Francisco, 1886, p. 297). «In 1785, at the suggestion of William Coxe, the historian, Billings was appointed by Catherine II to lead an expedition to the Chukotsky peninsula in northeastern Siberia, with the objective of filling the gap in the maps left by the Great Northern Expedition. Billings left St. Petersburg in 1785, accompanied by Martin Sauer (his historian and secretary) and Carl Heinrich Merck (a naturalist), and was in Okhotsk by July 1786. The section of the coast to the east of the Kolyma River was assigned to Gavril A. Sarychev who failed to make progress due to pack ice. In 1790 a second expedition, with the ship Slava Rossii and with an escorting craft, the Chernui Orel under Sarychev took Billings to the Aleutian Islands, and as far as Mount Elias on the coast of Alaska. At Unalaska, in June 1790, Sauer declared that the native inhabitants, with their Stone Age culture, were far superior to the toadies who made up the court circles at St. Petersburg and who had no culture at all. Sarychev investigated the Aleutians and the southern coast of Alaska, visiting Unalaska in June 1790, and Schugatskikh Bay (= Prince William Sound) in July. In the summer of 1790, Billings and a party of seven, including the naturalist Merck, reached Lavrentiya Bay. Unable to round the East Cape, he travelled westward overland to Nizhnekolymsk. The expedition returned in 1793» (Howgego, To 1800, B96). Lada-Mocarski 67; Howes S 115; Cox, vol, 1 p. 353; Wickersham 6128 (incorrectly described); Mezhov 14161; Obolyaninov 2406.

View of London, with the Improvements of its Port submitted to the Select Committee of the Honourable House of Commons, by Mr Dance, exhibiting the proposed Double Bridge intended for the passage of Ships. Painted & Engraved by William Daniell, the Picture in the possession of George Dance Esqr.

Published as the Act directs for William Daniell No.9 Cleveland Street Fitzroy Square, Aug. 15, 1802., London, - Keeping the dream alive Aquatint. A further view of George Dance the Younger's suggestions for the Port of London, suggesting a determination to keep the scheme alive. Dance's daring plans aroused much public interest, and a painter named R.C. Andrews displayed the design as a painted panorama for view in Sadler's Wells Theatre. Daniell produced both prints and a painting (now in the Guildhall Art Gallery), in which the Thames was transformed into a straighter river with uniform buildings lining the bank to the sides of the bridges.Unfortunately for Dance, his plans were never adopted: estimates of the cost ran to £1,250,000, a spectacular sum. The dedication on this print is to the entire select committee, rather than specifically to Lord Hawkesbury, but it seems to have done him no good. Image: 388 by 770mm (15.25 by 30.25 inches).       T.N. Longman & O. Rees. 1802 - Illustrated with 23 original silhouettes bound in at the end of each volume (12 in vol. I, 11 in vol. II). Contemp. full straight grained green morocco, spines expertly replaced with matching green calf, gilt ornaments, dentelles & single-ruled borders, tan & black leather labels. Booklabels of A. Lubbock on leading pastedowns, partly obscuring earlier signatures of C. Gell. a.e.g. A v.g. handsome copy. Wise (6). The first edition of 1798 comprised one volume only. For the second edition, a second volume of poems was added, with vol. I only designated ?second edition? For the next edition, 1802, the one here presented, vol. I was thus the ?third edition?, while vol. II was the ?second edition? In this edition Wordsworth further expanded the celebrated preface, as well as editing the poems in several places. One of Wordsworth?s poems was excised completely, as well as Coleridge?s ?The Dungeon?, reducing his contribution to just four pieces. The Argument to Ancient Mariner was also omitted. This copy has been augmented with the addition of 23 delicate silhouettes, cut from black paper and laid on to blanks, bound in at the end of each volume. These early images are unsigned, but each is accompanied by an ms. caption in a contemp. hand and page reference. Two silhouettes may have been excised (or never completed), as two text references appear without an accompanying image. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Gavard 1855 - 1857.

With a large folding lithographed plate with 28 figures. Contemporary marbled wrappers.

Engelmann, p. 613; WorldCat (5 copies); not in Nissen; for Christol: DSB III, p. 264. First (and only separately published) edition of a very rare work on the palaeontology of the Rhinoceros, with a large folding lithograph after drawings by the author. Christol (1802-1861) took an early interest in palaeontology and collected fossils. In 1829 he dared to challenge Cuvier's then still largely dominant views of human origins. The title-page notes that he was already a member of the Académie Royale des Sciences and several other scientific societies at the time of publication, though the present publication is apparently his rather late doctoral thesis (see DSB). Presentation copy with inscription "Donné par Monsieur le Christol" 18 December 1838 on back of title-page. The wrapper is slightly tattered. In very good condition and untrimmed, with many bolts unopened.

War of 1812 Orderly Book of the 1st Regiment Brigade, 2nd Division of Massachusetts Militia, with content regarding preparedness for the war " in case that place should be attacked by the Enemy"

n.p., 1802-1815. 6.5" x 7.5". "War of 1812 Orderly book. Re-cased book with speckled paper boards with older replaced leather spine. 6.5"" x 7.5"". Original end papers present with an inscription in ink ""Adjutant Book for the first Regiment Second Brigade & Second Division of Massachusetts Militia"" Expected wear to the very edges to the boards. Spine is rubbed but intact. The book is firmly bound. Scattered light foxing and handling marks throughout. Dates from July 18, 1802-January 19, 1815. The first 2/3 of the book is filled with orders in different hands, the balance of the book is blank. One page missing between entries for May 29, 1804 and August 6, 1804.The United States declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812. During the War of 1812 British forces invaded the United States, which included the burning down of the capitol and the White House in Washington, DC in 1814. Apparently, there was the possibility that the British would attack Portsmouth, New Hampshire that same year. This unique book provides a glimpse of the regular activities of militia companies in the United States during the early 19th century and follows the activities in which orders and instructions were received and recorded, specifically from the ""first Regiment Second Brigade & Second Division of Massachusetts Militia"" Most all the entries start with ""Agreeable to regimental Orders"", followed by ""You are hearby notified…"" or "" You are hearby ordered…"", or ""You are hearby required to meet…"". Many entries are in a different hand, however numerous entries in the later years are signed by Moses Emery Adjt. Several entries of noted interest are:Regarding preparedness in the face of a possible attack on Portsmouth:""Agreeable to BrigadeAnd Regimental Orders, Newbury, 5 May 1814Sir-you are hereby notified to hold yourself in readiness to march at a moment's warning with the Company under your Command completely equipped for the relief of Portsmouth in case that place should be attacked by the Enemy. Should the alarm be given that Portsmouth is attacked you must repair with the Company under your command to the alarm Post which is the South end of Essex Merrimack Bridge and there await further orders.""On September 12, 1814, a copy of a circular was copied into the book, which alerted commanders of militia companies to be prepared to march when ordered: ""Agreeable to Regimental Orders... You are hereby notified to hold the company under your command in constant readiness to march at a moment's warning Completely armed and equipped as the law directs, and, every man will furnish himself with a good knapsack and blanket before inspection. You will also order your company out for inspection on Tuesday the thirteenth Inst. at two o'clock P.M. and all deficiencies must be immediately supplied...""With several other examples of earlier entries as:""Sir-Agreeable to Regimental Orders-You will appear with the Company under your command on the parade near the Rev. Elijah Parish's Meeting-house in Byfield on Thursday the fourth day of July next precisely at one o'clock afternoon for Military duty-twenty cartridges without Balls is required of each soldier. Newbury June 19th, 1805""""Agreeable to Regimental Orders--You are hereby required to meet with the Legal voters of the Company under your command at some convenient place with the limits of said Company on Friday the third day of October next at four o'clock P.M., for the purpose of electing an Ensign for said Company in room of Ensign Enoch Plummer Promoted. Newbury Sept 18th, 1806, Captain Silas Moody""The Massachusetts Volunteer Militia units date back to 1636 when the Massachusetts Bay Colony militia was organized. Subsequently local town militia were formed and organized under laws mandated by the General Court of Massachusetts. From the time the first militia was organized, Massachusetts militia regiments participated in a number of major conflicts, including the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. This rare order book provides insight to the day to day activities of this militia unit leading up to the War of 1812."

        Adam and the Beasts.

Chichester. Printed by J. Seagrave, and sold by him and P. Humphry (et al.) for W. Blake, 1802. Frontispiece, 250 x 174 (sheet), 175 x 160 (platemark) mm, printed in black on wove paper. Recently cleaned, trimmed close to the right plate mark but not touching it, other margins wide. Fronstispiece to the first edition of the rarest letterpress publication containing engravings by Blake. The frontispiece, Adam and the Beasts, is one of Blake’s most alluring images. The illustrations were drawn, engraved, printed, and published by Blake himself. The work was a financial disaster, and unfortunately Blake had borne most of the publication costs. He was eventually reduced to reusing unsewn sheets of the 1802 Ballads for sketch paper. Geoffrey Keynes, writing in 1921, states: “This edition of the ballads is now extremely rare...” Bentley, Blake Books, 466. Easson and Essick, William Blake Book Illustrator, vol. 1, VI.         Africa To the Committee and Members of the British Association for Discovering the Interior Parts of Africa. This Map is with Their Permission most respectfully Inscribed, by their most obedient and humble Servant A. Arrowsmith A. Arrowsmith.

Rathbone Place, November, 1st, 1802., London, - . one of the greatest maps ever published. Engraved wall map, fine original full-wash hand colour, dissected and mounted on linen, edged in blue silk, some minor crinkling to map, a loss to silk edging. A truly groundbreaking map. Arrowsmith, with characteristic attention to detail, describes all the latest discoveries within the interior, as well as alluding to some of the earlier myths. A striking example of this is the vast mountain range running east to west, which Arrowsmith names as the "Mountains of Kong" and, further east, the legendary "Mountains of the Moon". However, the most notable feature of the map is the vast unknown interior of the continent, which Arrowsmith has left blank, and which must have been so inviting to the later British explorers of the Upper Nile and Central Africa. Arrowsmith's Africa is:". one of the greatest maps ever published. Arrowsmith simply stripped away centuries of accumulated myth, misconception and unsustainable guesswork, and took the mapping of Africa back to the bare bones of substantiated fact, leaving the interior as a blank canvas, a challenge to a new generation of explorers. As a picture, many of his predecessors of a century earlier would not have thought of publishing it, as a statement of intent it raised the standard for geographical accuracy above that practised by the vast majority of his contemporaries" (Mapforum, 2005, Issue 5, p.23)Aaron Arrowsmith (1750-1823) was the finest cartographer of his generation. Although he received little formal education it is believed that he was taught some mathematical instruction by William Emerson, an author of several books on the application of mathematics to the area of cartography. Around 1770, Arrowsmith moved to London to seek employment. It is believed that he worked for William Faden before joining John Cary Sr. in the early 1780s. There he provided the measurements for John Cary?Äôs early publication detailing the roads from London to Falmouth, his first signed work. Arrowsmith set up on his own in 1790 and over the next thirty years produced some of the most beautiful and elegant maps of the era.
