        The Quadrangular Passion Flower

      London: June 1st., 1802. Hand-coloured and colour-printed aquatint and stipple engraving by Hopwood. 21 3/4 x 17 1/8 inches. The most strikingly beautiful flower plates ever to be printed in England. "The Quadrangular Passion Flower [Passiflora quadrangularis L.] is so widely cultivated in South America that its precise country of origin cannot now be determined. It is indeed handsome and its colours so vivid that, far from the picture being sombre like that of the Blue Passion Flower, and although composed like that picture with the plant climbing up a pillar, it is much brighter... [with]... spectacular flowers... The Quadrangular Passion Flower has, however, virtues beyond the striking appearance of its flowers. Its fruit... is the well-known Granadilla, universally consumed as a delicacy in the warm countries where the plant will grow freely." (Ronald King. The Temple of Flora by Robert Thornton. 1981, p.84). Thornton's Temple of Flora is the greatest English colour-plate flower book. "...[Thornton] inherited a competent fortune and trained as a doctor. He appears to have had considerable success in practice and was appointed both physician to the Marylebone Dispensary and lecturer in medical botany at Guy's and St. Thomas's hospitals. But quite early in his career he embarked on his... great work. What Redouté produced under the patronage of L'Héritier, Marie Antoinette, the Empress Josephine, Charles X and the Duchesse de Berry, Thornton set out to do alone... Numerous important artists were engaged... twenty-eight paintings of flowers commissioned from Abraham Pether, known as `Moonlight Pether', Philip Reinagle, ... Sydenham Edwards, and Peter Henderson... The result... involved Thornton in desperate financial straits.... In an attempt to extricate himself he organized the Royal Botanic Lottery, under the patronage of the Prince Regent... it is easy to raise one's eyebrows at Thornton's unworldly and injudicious approach to publishing... But he produced... one of the loveliest books in the world" (Alan Thomas Great Books and Book Collecting, pp.142-144). Second state of three of this plate from the Temple of Flora.. "In the first, the fluting at the top left of the column is scarcely visible, while there are clouds on either side of the column. In the second, the indistinct fluting has been made clear, while a shadow has been added in aquatint above a tendril just below the capital of the column. The clouds have almost gone. In the third, much... stipple has been added over the aquatint in many places and especially on the leaves, and the base of the column is more distinct than in the earlier states.       Newburyport: Edmund M. Blunt for Thomas Biggs, 1802.. 589,[4],pp. plus [3]pp. of ads, plus seven engraved plates and folding frontispiece map. Contemporary calf, spine richly gilt, gilt leather label. Expertly rebacked, original spine laid down. Folding map neatly repaired along vertical folds and at lower margin, but with no loss of printed area. Contemporary ownership notes on endpapers. Text tanned throughout, scattered foxing. Overall a good to very good copy, in original condition. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. The scarce first edition of the first accurate American navigational guide, a landmark work in its field. Most copies were used to pieces, hence the scarcity of decent copies. "The first complete epitome of practical navigation for the common man...Often termed the greatest book in all the history of navigation, this intellectual achievement of our early culture was indispensable to the maritime and commercial expansion of the nineteenth century" - Grolier American 100. Bowditch was first hired by Blunt to revise John Hamilton Moore's NEW PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR, first published by Blunt with Bowditch's additions in 1799. Proficient in several languages, with a good amount of sailing experience, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Bowditch added much in the way of additional information to the work. He contributed so much in the way of revisions, that Blunt decided to completely redo the book, publishing it in 1802 with a new title and with Bowditch listed as the author. It is a fundamentally important work on the art of navigation, with scores of tables and diagrams, and a wealth of practical (naturally) information. The whole history of the Bowditch NAVIGATOR is told exhaustively in John Campbell's HISTORY AND BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE NEW AMERICAN PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR (Salem, 1964). Campbell identifies eight different imprints for the first edition (all listing different regional booksellers) and does not hazard to officially assign priority. The present copy bears contemporary ownership inscriptions on the endpapers and a note reading "March the 14th 1810 lying in Funchal," indicating that an early owner of this copy might have been engaged in trans- Atlantic trade in the early nineteenth century. Translated into English verse, with preliminary essay, notes, and illustrations, By the Rev. Henry Boyd. 3 volumes, octavos (212 × 123 mm). Early 19th century dark red half morocco, brown cloth to sides, spines in compartments with gilt-tooled raised bands and gilt titles, marbled endpapers and edges. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Dante by Thomas Stothard. Contemporary bookseller's ticket of Edward Madden, Dublin, to the front free endpaper. A few small marks to the covers, volume 2 fore-edge of rear board a little dented, leaves tanned with occasional foxing. A very good set. First edition of the first English version of the complete Divine Comedy to be published, which is greatly significant for "assisting to re-establish an audience for Dante, whose reputation had suffered a decline in the previous century" (ODNB). The translator Henry Boyd (1748/9–1832) was a Church of Ireland clergyman. He has stamped his own character on this text with a lengthy introductory preface (as well as a historical essay of his own to add to his translation of Leonardo Bruni's Life of Dante), in which he celebrates Dante as an original genius whose reputation had been unjustly diminished by unimaginative laws of criticism dominated by the French propensity to "cast a damp upon original invention". Interestingly, Boyd attempts to associate the resurgence of Dante with the contemporary rise of radical thought and politics "in this age of enlightened reason and adventurous discovery". Boyd had previously in 1785 published by subscription a two-volume translation of the Inferno only, alongside a specimen of the Orlando Furioso of Ariosto, and this in itself was only the second English translation of the Inferno. This first complete English Dante is scarce in commerce.

      London: Peacock and Sons, 1802. 2 volumes in specially designed "Gentleman's Box" the first volume has black morocco label over full contemporary calf with words: Geographical Dictionary. 3rd ed. 407p. (1804) This volume has 9 folding maps expertly accented on borders with water color showing 1) Western Hemisphere; 2) Solar System; 3) Africa; 4) North America; 5) South America; 6) Asia; 7) Australasia; 8) Europe and 9) Polynesia. All in fine condition. The second volume with matching contemporary calf has title: Geographical Grammar. 408p. 2nd corrected edition, with 13 maps. also accented with water color. Such matching sets were intended for the desk of the gentleman so he might determine generally where his overseas investments were located or else to satisfy his curiosity. Fortunatly, the owner of this set appears never to have examined the contents thus they are in fine condition. The period these maps are slowly incorporating the Pacific discoveries showing Botany Bay, New Zealand, the Sandwich Islands, the Friendly Isles and present day Papua.. 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall.

Two volumes Frontispiece portrait (repaired in margin not affecting image) expertly rebacked to style, original tree calf over boards, lettered in gilt, preserving original endpapers Moultrie was a politician at the outbreak of war and his narrative is considered a most valuable first hand account of the American Revolution in the South. He was also an officer in the South Carolina colonial regiment and was eventually promoted to Brigadier-General in the Continental Army. He fought in several of the important battles in the South, including the defense of Fort Sullivan in 1776, also helped lead the defense of Charleston from the British until his forces were overcome in 1780. Moultrie was kept prisoner for more than one year by the British, who then offered him a command in Jamaica trying to bring him over to their side.& "The author's position as Governor of South Carolina, afforded him ample facilities to consult original authorities, and the result of his research is a good book" -Sabin [Howes M865. A scarce work, and one of the most valuable firsthand narratives of the American Revolution in the South. At the outbreak of the Revolution, Moultrie was a politician and an officer in the South Carolina colonial regiment (where he had risen to prominence during the Cherokee War). He was eventually promoted to the position of brigadier-general in the Continental Army. Moultrie fought in several important southern battles, including the defense of Fort Sullivan in 1776, and helped lead the defense of Charleston from the British before his forces were finally overcome in 1780. Pierre-Joseph Redoute was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redoute went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Theatre italien. Redoute painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redoute came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redoute a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redoute's understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redoute's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redoute brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Liliacees from which this work comes. Les Liliacees is one of two Redoute masterworks, the other being Les Roses. These works demonstrate the appropriateness of the accolade "Raphael of Flowers", for one is constantly impressed by the exquisite compositional sense and clarity of vision.       Stockholm, Carl Delén, 1802-1819. Eight volumes (of eleven), 576 handcoulered engraved plates + 576 leaves with text. Lacking portraits of Palmstruch and Swartz. Withbound blueish wrappers to all fascicules. Later light brown full calf, boards with gild bordure, sligthly worn, richly gilt edges, slightly faded, green title labels, upper edge trimmed, otherwise mostly uncut (Nils Lindes kungl. hovbokbinderi, Göteborg). Exlibris (P. Lundvall). Complete as such, one plate with small mended marginal tear, a few with minor foxing, two with faded dampmarks, about fifteen plates in the last volume with some dampstaining; some text leaves with dampstains and some foxing, title to part one with dampstain in margin. Part VIII lacks title as often.. This magnificent work with handcoulered botanical plates "was esteemed by contemporaries as an enterprise of national importance. Palmstruch´s own illustrations, in the first six volumes, have been characterized as the best pictures of plants ever produced in Sweden, and make this one of the most beautiful of Swedish books." Titelbladet lite solkfläckigt.. Enligt Kungliga biblioteket trycktes boken 1801-03. I företalet uppger författaren att arbetet tillkom då han vid föreläsningar vid Krigsakademien på Karlberg saknade en lämplig handbok i ämnet. Arbetet gavs enligt Quensel ut med 1/4 ark i sänder för att en överdriven "myckenheten af läsning, på en gång, icke skulle afskräcka och tillika, at man skulle kunna veta förut de försök, som näst förestående försöksdag vore at vänta". Conrad Quensel (1767-1806) var entomolog och gjorde en betydande insats vid ordnandet av Vetenskapsakademiens naturaliekabinett. Även inom bibliofila kretsar har han blivit känd - nämligen som medarbetare i de första banden av de år 1802 respektive 1806 påbörjade, av J. W. Palmstruch utgivna planschverken, "Svensk botanik" och "Svensk zoologi". Quensel och Berzelius experimenterade tillsammans i Galvaniska sällskapet och Berzelius efterträdde Quensel både som lärare på Karlberg och professor i medicin och farmaci vid Collegium medicums skola

Marbled pages edges and endpapers. Small owner bookplate to front pastedown of each volume. Some rubbing and wear, mostly to edges, and light bumping to corners. Generally, a very tight and clean set. Minstrelsy marked Scott's true literary debut, written and published as a collection of the traditional ballads that Scott had been collecting in yearly trips to the Borders since 1792. Overall, a very attractive copy of the first edition of Scott's first major work.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Illustrated with 60 hand coloured full page plates after Dalvimart, lacking two plates (#8 and 47) three-quarter brown smooth calf, over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, brown endpapers With the bookplate of the noted book collector Mary MacMillin Norton Each plate is described in English and French on the accompanying text leaf. The drawings for the plates were made in situ by Dalvimart and are considered very accurate. From the preface: ..." We admire, ...a nation, which sprang up on the borders of the Caspian Sea in the thirteenth century, and has, for near four hundred years, acquired the possession of, and still reigns over, the most beautiful part of Europe, while its forces have often thrown terror into the most powerful of its neighbours. ... these object are, to delineate with fidelity the various modes of dress and peculiarity of customs now existing among this singular nation, and its various dependencies; and to accompany such portraits with appropriate and accurate descriptions."       Stockholm. Tryckt hos Carl Delén. 1802. 6:o. 22 x 14 cm. Title + (2 pp.) + (144 pp.) + (1 p.) + 13 pp. + X pp. + 72 hand coloured engravings. 19th century brown half calf with title in gilt at the spine. Marbled board papers. Name inscription in ink at the front fly leaf. Somewhat worn and scratched binding. Bumped corners. A short tear to text leaf 27. Interior in very nice condition.. This is the first volume of "Svensk Botanik". The work was published in 11 volumes 1802-1843. The engravings in the early volumes are known to be of higher quality than in the later ones. Up to his death in 1811 Palmstruch painted most of the originals. After his death several artists made the originals. The engravings were executed by Carl Wilhelm Venus and Johan Gustaf Ruckman (a few by Palmstruch). The plates were coloured by women colourists, specially trained for the work. The colouring has a wonderful "light" nordic quality. The text was authored by Conrad Quensel, Olof Swartz and Göran Wahlenberg. "Svensk Botanik" is the most famous work on botany ever published in Sweden and of the highest quality

First printing of this extremely important discovery, in which Gay-Lussac first formulated the law, Gay-Lussac's Law, stating that if the mass and pressure of a gas are held constant then gas volume increases linearly as the temperature rises. This is sometimes written as V = k T, where k is a constant dependent on the type, mass, and pressure of the gas and T is temperature on an absolute scale. Image size: 16 1/2 x 23 1/2 inches. 21 1/4 x 29 3/8 inches. A very fine view of the Barramah'l region that had just recently been wrested from Tippoo Sultan's grasp when the Daniells visited. "Rayakottai formed part of a chain of military outposts used by Tipu Sultan's forces on their campaigns in the Tamil country. A British flag flying proudly from a lookout halfway up the hill proclaims the recent British victory. Rings of walls encircling the central granite rock at successive levels were clearly visible to the Daniells, but can hardly be traced now" (Martinelli/Michell p.144). The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is considered to be the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies, sketches and drawings of the scenery, architecture, and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further thirteen years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain, the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture, landscaping and interior decoration arose, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement still lies in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real, resulting in images that capture the European taste for the sublime landscape, while still remaining faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an accurate vision of this wondrous country. Consisting of one hundred and forty-four views, published in six parts, the work was issued in seven stages: three sets of twenty-four plates titled Oriental Scenery with title dates of 1795, 1797, and 1801; twelve plates titled Antiquities of India dated 1799; twenty-four plates titled Hindoo Excavations dated 1803; twenty-four plates titled Views in Hindoostan dated 1807; and twelve further plates of Antiquities of India published without a title page in 1808. All plates were engraved by the Daniells and all are taken from their drawings save the twenty-four plates of Hindoo Excavations, which are after drawings by James Wales. Heavy foxing to the margins of the frontispiece, with offsetting to the title page. Some foxing to the margins of the plates, a couple with a little more foxing. Some offsetting from the plates to the adjoining text leaves. A couple of leaves with a little more offsetting. One plate with a repaired tear to the margin. The colour at the plate depicting Corvus lapponicus has oxidated. Over all a very nice and clean interior.. A classic travel account by Joseph Acerbi, an italian scientist and explorer who supposedly was the first italian to push through all the way to the Notrth Cape over land. Among many other things the book contains an interesting account on finnish customs illustrated with plates, such as sauna bathing. The work also has five zoological plates, all hand coloured. According to Bring, this is probably the second edition. It has exactly the same contents as the first edition, but with some typhographical differences. It might have been published the same year as the first edition, which the year at the title indicates, but this is not clearly established

Cont. owner's name and inventory number and mid 20th century owner's stamp (Emil Bödtker, famous Danish editor and book collector) to general title-page. (4 - general title-page + errata), 188 pp. With both the general title-page for for vol. 2, part 1 of Kritisches Journal and the separate half-title for "Glauben und Wissen".. The very rare first edition (which only appeared thus - in the Kritisches Journal), in its entirety, of one of Hegel's most important and interesting early works, his second major work, being the first that he published after his dissertation. After having graduated, Hegel was given work as a private tutor, although he wished to pursue an academic career. When his father died in 1799, he was given a small inheritance that was enough to allow him to give up his tutoring position and follow his heart. Thus, after having turned his interests towards the critical philosophy of Kant instead of more religious and social themes, in the beginning of 1801 he came to Jena, the university city which then was strongly dominated by the philosophy of Schelling and his new-Kantian style of philosophy. Here Hegel became closely acquainted with Schelling, and, after having written his dissertation on the difference between the system of Schelling and that of Fichte, in 1801, Schelling and Hegel began their seminal periodical "Kritisches Journal der Philosophie", which appeared from 1802 till 1803. Among the articles that Hegel published here were some of his most important works, e.g. the article on natural law ("Über die Wissenschaftliche Behandlungsarten des Naturrechtes", from November 1802) and his groundbreaking "Glauben und Wissen", from July 1802..This famous work constitutes a criticism of the subjective philosophy of Kant, Jacobi and Fichte. The work is now considered as being of the utmost importance, not only because it gives an excellent insight into the foundational principles of classical German idealistic philosophy before Hegel, but especially because Hegel already here displays early signs of his own speculative philosophy of absolute knowledge, that which he so famously five years later develops systematically in his groundbreaking "Phänomenologie des Geistes". The question of "Belief and Knowledge" keeps being of essential character to all fields of philosophy, from analytic philosophy and logic to continental philosophy, both classic and modern.Parts of Schelling and Hegel's "Kritisches Journal" are of the utmost scarcity, not to speak of the entire journal. We have not been able to find evidence that the first printing of "Glauben und Wissen" has ever been sold separately, as it is here

Aquatint additional title, 24 aquatint plates and plans, each printed in a single colour: black, dark brown, bistre or blue. Contemporary tree calf gilt, covers with border of single gilt roll, the flat spine divided into six compartments by horizontal fillets, black morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others with decorative repeat tooling in gilt with pointillé work (joints rubbed). A beautifully illustrated work, mostly in the neo-Gothic style, from one of the great architectural draughtsmen of the late-18th century. This valuable work begins with an essay by Malton 'Reflections on the necessity and advantage of temporary retirement' - 'The wise, the virtuously independent, who prefer the pure and tranquil retirement of the country, to the foetid joys of the tumultuous city, are they who take the most likely means to enjoy that blessing of life, happiness' (p.ii). This is followed by an introduction in which he recommends the smaller house or 'villa' as against a single very large mansion. 'Many families have been either ruined, or greatly hurt by a madness for building magnificent houses, in town or country, which have too often proved the tombs of the most substantial riches, and have soon passed into the hands of strangers' (p.9).The final section gives explanations of the fine plates, beginning with a definition of the 'rural retreat' or villa: 'A Villa, may be defined, the country retreat of a nobleman or gentleman. Its character is elegance, and its situation should be retired. A Villa should not be of great extent ... It should be capable of accommodating a few chosen friends with ease and comfort; wherefore it should possess every requisite convenience for domestic felicity. Its contour should be uniform, and distinguished by unadorned beauty of form, or by just distribution of chaste ornament' (p.15). James Malton, was the son of Thomas Malton (1726-1801) and the younger brother of Thomas Malton Jr. (1748-1804). The whole family worked as architectural draughtsmen, but also specialised in different but related areas: Malton senior was noted for his work on the theory of perspective and pure geometry, Thomas Malton Jr. became well-known as a teacher (J.M.W. Turner wrote 'My real master was Tom Malton) and for his highly accurate drawings of London, whilst James was evidently keen to secure work as a practising architect: 'Mr. Malton would furnish an estimate of the cost that would be incurred in Building not only any design of this collection, but any other design of his he might make; and would enter into contract for the just execution thereof ' ('advertisement' page following the title) Abbey Life 35; Archer 196:1; Prideaux p.343; RIBA, III, 2015

First English edition, translated from the German edition of 1799-1801. The fine plates are copied from the German edition, and they were used again some eight years later in John Stockdale's "Costumes of the Russian Empire" from 1811.The famous work by Pallas, a member of the Russian Academy, is one of the two major scientific expeditions at this time in Russia, and Pallas here gives a detailed description of the Crimean flora and fauna, mineralogy, mountains, and salt lakes and the ancient cave towns. - Abbey No 222. - Tooley No 357."Between 1793 and 1794, Pallas led a second expedition to southern Russia, visiting the Crimea and the Black Sea. He was accompanied by his daughter (by his first wife who had died in 1782) and his new wife, an artist, servants and a military escort. In February 1793 they travelled to Saratov and then downriver to Volgograd. They spent the spring exploring the country to the east, and in August travelled along the banks of the Caspian Sea and into the Caucasus mountains. In September they travelled to the Crimea, wintering in Simferol. Pallas spent the spring of 1794 exploring to the southeast, and in July travelled up the valley of the Dnieper, arriving back in St Petersburg in September. Pallas gave his account of the journey in his P. S. Pallas Bemerkungen auf einer Reise in die Südlichen Statthalterschaften des Russischen Reichs (1799-1801). Catherine II gave him a large estate at Simferol, where Pallas lived until the death of his second wife in 1810. He was then granted permission to leave Russia by Emperor Alexander, and returned to Berlin, where he died in the following year. His grave is preserved in the Protestant Friedhof I der Jerusalems- und Neuen Kirchengemeinde (Cemetery No. I of the congregations of Jerusalem's Church and New Church) in Berlin-Kreuzberg, south of Hallesches Tor."

The complete work should contain 774 handcoloured copperplates accompanied by 774 leaves of text. The last parts of the final volume were never published and a fire in the printing house destroyed the stock of the last published parts, which are consequently very rare (see the back of the index). Johan Wilhelm Palmstruch (1770-1811), an army officer, who had learned drawing from Desprez, made 455 coloured drawings of plants (now in the Academy of Sciences) and planned this magnificent work using as models Oeder's Flora Danica and Sowerby's English Botany. He started in collaboration with the engraver Carl Wilh. Venus (1770-1851) and the botanist Conrad Quensel (1767-1806) with financial support from the Academy of Sciences, which was responsible for publishing the work. The text was written by the most distinguished botanists of the period, Quensel, Olof Schwartz, Elias Friis, Göran Wahlenberg and Peter Fredrik Wahlberg. After Palmstruch's death the drawings were made by Gustaf Johan Billberg, Chancellor of the Exchequer and botanist, by Swartz, Lars Levi Laestadius, A. J. Agrelius, and P. F. Wahlberg. The work was esteemed by contemporaries as an enterprise of national importance. Palmstruch's own illustrations, in the six first volumes, have been characterized as the best pictures of plants ever produced in Sweden, and make this one of the most beautiful of Swedish books.
