Report Of The Case John Dorrance Against Arthur Fenner, Tried at

1802. [Trial]. [Body Snatching]. Dorrance, John [1747-1813], Plaintiff. Report Of The Case John Dorrance Against Arthur Fenner, Tried at the December Term, of the Court of Common Pleas, In the County of Providence, A.D. 1801. To Which are Added, The Proceedings of the Case of Arthur Fenner vs. John Dorrance, Carefully Compiled from Notes Correctly Taken by Several Gentlemen Who Were Present During the Whole Course of the Trial. Providence: Printed by Bennett Wheeler, 1802. iv, 116 pp. Octavo (8" x 5"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound into nineteenth-century three-quarter morocco over marbled boards. Spine and corners worn but sound, hinges starting. Light browning and occasional faint dampspotting to text, internally clean. * First edition. A bizarre case involving a suit and counter suit between a justice of the Court of Common Pleas (Dorrance) and the Governor of Rhode Island (Fenner), who libeled Dorrance with a charge that he exchanged the body of a suicide left in his care to one Dr. Pardon Bowen for a one beaver hat, which Dorrance "had the impudence to wear ... while ... officiating as moderator of a town meeting ..." Dorrance and Fenner were obviously political rivals, and the trials resulted in two confusing verdicts, but the real interest here is the medical background, which recounts in great detail the measures taken by local medical doctors and their students to acquire corpses for classroom dissection.         (d'ALBEDYHLL, Gustaf.) Piéces authentiques, qui servent à éclair la conduite du baron d'Albedyhll, (alors ministre de Suède en Dannemarc) dans l'affaire, qui se passa à Copenhague, au commencement de l'annèe 1789.

(Stockholm, 1802.) 4:o. (4),+ 5-73,+ (3) s. Häftad, i samtida marmorerat pappersomslag. Tillsammans med: (d'ALBEDYHLL, Gustaf & EHRENHEIM, F. W. von.) Suite des pièces authentiques, qui servent à eclaircir ma conduite &c. et mon sort, après de justification obtenû. (Stockholm, 1802?). 4:o. (2), 77-103 s. Häftad, i samtida marmorerat pappersomslag. Fint exemplar, ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Setterwall 3304: "Arbetet indraget af författaren och ytterligt sällsynt". Åhlen 17:341 not.

        John Woodvil, a Tragedy

London: G. and J. Robinson, 1802. 12mo. (iv), 128pp. First edition. This is Lamb's first play, written in 1799. In addition the book includes Mary Lamb's poem "Helen," which marks her first appearance in print. In reference to "Helen," Charles Lamb asked Coleridge, in a letter: "How do you like this little epigram? It is not my writing, nor had I any finger in it. If you concur with me in thinking it very elegant and very original, I shall be tempted to name the author to you. I will just hint that it is almost or quite a first attempt." The book concludes with some "curious fragments" by Robert Burton, which are, in fact, by Lamb. A few light scratches to front cover, else a nice copy bound in full green crushed morocco by Bedford, with gilt spine and gilt turn-ins. Includes a tipped-in fragment of paper with a crossed-out inscription, apparently in Lamb's hand. Housed in a cloth chemise and slipcase.

On the Theory of Light and Colours [An Account of some Cases of the Production of Colours, not hitherto described]. The Bakerian Lecture

London: W. Bulmer for G. & W. Nicol, 1802 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Volume 92, Part I, 1802, pp. 12-48 & 387-97. London: W. Bulmer for G. & W. Nicol, 1802. 2 parts, 4to. Engraved plate by Basire in part 1. Red modern faux leather. Parts I and II bound in one volume, 528 pp., - Article Part 1: Dibner 152; PMM 259; Norman 2275. Article Part 2 Norman 2276 - FIRST EDITIONS. Part 1 is 'an epoch-making contribution to the theory of light in all its phases'. Read as the Bakerian lecture, November 12, 1801, Young firmly endorsed Huygen's wave theory of light, displacing Newton's corpuscular theory which had been favoured for most of the 18th century, and so found explanations for unresolved optical phenomena such as interference. Part 2 is a further explanation of the wave theory. Also in this volume: WOLLASTON, William Hyde. A Method of examining refractive and dispersive Powers, by prismatic Reflection. In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 92, Part I, 1802, 4to. pp. 365-380 - Sparrow, Milestones of Science 198. - The third major scientific discovery announced in this volume of the Transactions is Wollaston's discovery of black lines crossing the colored band of the solar spectrum. "The science of astrophysics began" with Wollaston's report of this phenomenon to the Royal Society (Singer, Short History of Scientific Ideas to 1900). Wollaston's examination of the solar spectrum, here described, revealed for the first time the numerous black lines afterwards connected with the name of Fraunhofer; and his paper is one of the most significant "incunabula" of the discovery of spectrum analysis. Twelve years later the appearance of these dark lines (called "Fraunhofer lines") was confirmed by the maker of Wollaston's original spectroscope..

Istruzione Elementare per gli studiosi della Scultura

Tipografia della Societa Letteraria Florence: Tipografia della Società Letteraria, 1802. Rare first edition of this illustrated treatise on the art of sculpture by Carradori, a neoclassical sculptor and professor at the Florentine Academy. The work considers basic tools and materials of the craft: clay, wax, stucco, stone and marble as well as the straw, wire, cloth and glue for ephemeral or festival decorations. There follows an outline of human anatomy and the basic methods of modelling in clay, direct and indirect stone carving, the use of stucco, bronze casting, pointing, riveting, transportation and the restoration of ancient sculpture. The last is of particular interest as Carradori carried out the restoration of a number of important ancient sculptures and Renaissance buildings (listing in DBI), and the present work affords a look into his methods. * Cicognara 306; DBI, s.v. Carradori, 633-35.. Small folio [23 x 28.6 cm], (2) ff., including full-page engraved title signed Lafinio after Carradori, 37 pp., (1) f., 17 numbered plates on (13) ff., each preceded or followed by 1 page of numbered explanatory text (total 8 leaves). Bound in early patterned wrappers. Toning and occasional spotting in margin, but generally a very fresh copy.

GLI ANIMALI PARLANTI POEMA EPICO DI GIAMBATTISTA CASTI.

Milano dalla Stamperia di San Zeno 1802 16° 3 volumi Pagine X + 245 + 265 + 264 Legatura coeva in mezza pelle marrone. Piatti marmorizzati. Titolo e ricchi fregi oro al dorso. Tagli spruzzati. Filini.

A Boy Angling; A Boy Mending His Net

London: J. & J. Boydell, 1 May 1802. Stipple engravings, printed in colours, with touches of hand-colouring, by William Nutter & Thomas Gaugain (1) and Hollyer and Gaugain (2). 9 1/4 x 12 1/2 inches approx. 14 1/8 x 16 5/8 inches approx. A charming pair of scenes of childhood, colour-printed and beautifully finished by hand. Fine examples of large scale aquatints from Westall, based on his own charming watercolours. Westall was at his best in watercolour, and was the leader of a reform in figure-painting in this medium... The brilliancy of his colouring was considered novel and astonishing in his own day... A large number of Westall's rustic subjects were engraved, such as Rural Contemplation and Rural Music, by T. Gaugain, 1801; The Sad Story and The Woodcutter and Cowboy, by John Ogborne, 1802; A Storm in Harvest, 1802; and Reapers, 1805, by Robert Mitchell Meadows. (DNB). This extraordinarily appealing pair evoke the boyhood happiness of solitary outdoor activities. In one, a boy attentively mends his net by the seashore and in the other, another boy kneels by a quiet pond with his fishing rod and waits.

View of London, with the Improvement of its Port

London: William Daniell, 15 August 1802. Hand-coloured aquatint, painted and engraved by Daniell, with black ink-ruled border to the image and grey/green wash border, on card. (Occasional marginal soiling to border). 15 1/24 x 30 1/2 inches. 22 3/8 1/2 x 35 1/2 inches. A wonderful and very rare image of London: separately issued in an effort to publicize George Dance's scheme for the redevelopment of the heart of London This imaginary view is of the Thames looking east from a vantage point somewhere above present-day Southwark Bridge: it shows what this artery through the greatest city in the world would have looked like if George Dance's suggestions had been adopted. His scheme, presented by him in his capacity as surveyor to the City of London, retained a number of the existing landmarks, but called for the creation of a number of others: the most obvious features are the white column of Sir Christopher Wren's Monument to the 1666 Great Fire of London (in the left foreground), in the middle of the mid-ground the white walls of the Tower of London and in the centre foreground the revolutionary double-bridge replacement for London Bridge. The sub-title describes Dance's suggested improvements, noting that this view was "submited to the Select Comittee of the Honourable House of Commons, by Mr. Dance, exhibiting the proposed Double Bridge intended for the passage of Ships, by the alternate elevation of a draw bridge in either of the two bridges, whilst an uninterrupted way over the other is afforded at all times for carriages and foot-passengers, without impeding the navigation, and without the necessity of such elevated arches as the height of Ships' masts require - also the proposed Embankment and enlargement of the Legal Quays, and the new Custom-house in the centre of a line of Warehouses extending to the Tower, to and from which goods would be conveyed by carts on the level of the area round the Monument, without encumbering the quays - the Monument, that noble column, created by the immortal Sir Christopher Wren, is seen in the focus of an extensive amphitheatrical area on the north side of the Thames, and the proposed Naval Trophy in the centre of a semicircular range of buildings on the south side of the river. Painted & Engraved by William Daniell - The Picture in the posession of George Dance Esqr." Cf. T.Sutton The Daniells (1954) p.112-113 and 162.

An Enquiry into the Law Merchant of the United States; Or, Lex

1802. [Caines, George (1771-1825)]. An Enquiry into the Law Merchant of the United States; Or, Lex Mercatoria Americana, on Several Heads of Commercial Importance. Dedicated by Permission to Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States. In Two Volumes. Vol. 1 [all published]. New York: Printed by Isaac Collins & Son, For Abraham and Arthur Stansbury, 1802. xxxviii, [2], 648; clxvii, [1] pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5"). Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards retaining original lettering piece, gilt fillets and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed. Some wear to fore-edges of preliminaries, light foxing in a few places, internally clean. * Only edition. With an appendix of forms. As Horwitz has pointed out, this is "the first American treatise on commercial law." Surrency notes that it was also the first to deal with admiralty law. It focused on shipping and maritime commerce, with substantial sections on insurance and bankruptcy. Reflecting the tension that existed between arbitrators and courts of law, Caines insisted that "in what appertains to trade, let it be constantly remembered, that custom alone is law" (220). Among other topics, this treatise has fascinating entries on the slave trade and the character of different ports. Caines was the official reporter of the New York Supreme Court.         Gladiolus Communis / Glayeul Commun [Common Gladiolus] [Pl. 267]

Paris: Imprimerie de Didot jeune, 1802-16. Stipple engraving, printed in colour and finished by hand, engraved by de Gouy. 20 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches. Pierre-Joseph Redouté was one of the world's great flower painters. Born into a family that had been painters for at least two generations, Redouté went to Paris in 1782 with his brother where they worked as scene painters for the Théâtre Italien. Redouté painted flowers in his spare time. The search for subjects led him to the Jardin du Roi and eventually to Gerard van Spaendonck who made him an assistant. While at the Jardin du Roi, Redouté came to know Charles-Louis L'Heritier, an amateur botanist and writer of independent means. He gave Redouté a full time job as an illustrator, instructing him in plant anatomy. Redouté's "functional" understanding of plants contributed greatly to the clarity of his depictions. But it was Redouté's work in stipple engraving and colour printing that was to be of the greatest importance. Stippling and the application of two or three colour inks to one plate were engraving innovations that Redouté brought to French printmaking, and these were brought to perfection in Les Liliacées from which this work comes. Les Liliacées is one of two Redouté masterworks, the other being Les Roses. These works demonstrate the appropriateness of the accolade "Raphael of Flowers", for one is constantly impressed by the exquisite compositional sense and clarity of vision. More than with any other painter, one sees in Redouté's flowers living, breathing beings at their most beautiful moment. Cf. Nissen BBI 1597; cf.Great Flower Books (1990), p 128; cf. Dunthorne p 231; cf. Stafleu & Cowan TL2 8747; cf. MacPhaeil, Redouteana, 10.
