Recherches sur la nature et les causes de la richesse des nations; traduction nouvelle, avec des notes et observations par Germain Garnier. Volumes I-V. [FIVE VOLUMES, THE CORRECTED ISSUE].

Paris, Agasse, 1802.. Five volumes. Crown octavo. Pp. cxxvii (Preface), 368; 493; 564; 556; 588. Engraved frontispiece, signed by B. L. Prevost, to the first volume. All half-titles present. Extended comprehensive index, footnotes. Hardcover, uniformly bound in handsome contemporary half polished calf and speckled boards; spines gilt ruled, each with a cherry-red, gilt morocco title-label, and an oval, gilt-and-black morocco volume-number label, set within gilt-embossed wreath. Paper over inner hinges of volume I split, not affecting binding which remains firm and tight. Nice embroidered ribbon marker to each volume. In about fine condition (some annotations in light coloured pencil in one volume). A very handsome set. ~ Adam Smith's (1723-1790) work is the first major expression of organized study of social wealth. "'The Wealth of Nations' is not a system, but as a provisional analysis it is completely convincing. The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought." (PMM 221). The present, much admired French translation of Smith's "Wealth of Nations", by the French poet and economist Comte Germain Garnier (1754-1821), became the standard, definitive French text. (Palgrave 1894-1901). Garnier's elegant Preface to this edition contains a summary of the doctrine of Smith, a comparison between the same and that of French economists, and a parallel between the wealth of France and that of England. - - The present set is the scarce corrected issue, published without the 5 errata slips (one to each volume) and conforms to Einaudi's 5340 description..

Paris: Chez LePetit jeune, libraire, An X.- 1802.. Engraved portrait frontis, xxiv, [25]-315 pp. (with half title) Sm. 8vo. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt title and decoration on spine, marbled endpapers. First edition. Sabin 98971. Streeter III: 1573. Howes V74. Raines: 208. Brunet IV: 14019. Includes six items covering: Louisiana (and Canada), p. [25]-181; India (l'Indostan), p. [183]-228; Haiti (Saint-Domingue), p. [229]-239; Corsica (Corse), p. [241]-251; Guiana (Guyane), p. [253]-272; and "Lettre de M. le chevalier Turgot, a M. le duc de Choiseul. Paris, le 10 octobre 1765", p. [273]-300, with each section having separate half titles except for the last. Vergennes was a French diplomat serving as Foreign Minister from 1774 during the reign of Louis XVI, who helped to conclude a treaty with the American Colonies. The first section on Louisiana and Canada was probably written about 1777, published only after France had reclaimed Louisiana but shortly before its acquisition by the United States. Much interesting material on both New France and Louisiana. A few sources argue the work was not by Vergennes. A very good copy, rebacked with original backstrip laid down, edge wear, some leaves browned, occasional minor dampstain.

Paris: Dubroca, Fuchs, Veuve Deveaux, and Rondonneau, 1802. - [4],104pp. plus large folding map (partially handcolored). 12mo. Early 19th century marbled paper boards. Contemporary ownership inscription dated Paris, 1804 on titlepage. Some light toning and soiling, heavier to first and last leaf. Bookplate on rear pastedown. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase. First edition of this exceedingly rare French imprint promoting the possession of Louisiana in the early 19th century. It was published during the brief return of France's control of the territory between the Spanish and American periods of ownership between March and December 1803. The large folding map, "Carte de la Louisiane et du cours du Mississipi avec les Colonies Anglaises," is a revised version of Guillaume Delisle's map first published in 1718. The work includes a history and description of the colony, a description of the natives of the area and their customs, and the state of commerce in the region. Dubroca, who evidently published the work himself, argues for a much greater French presence in Louisiana. SABIN 21028. HOWES D526, "b." STREETER SALE 1572. SIEBERT SALE 682.

The Friend of Women: Translated from the French of Bourdier [sic] de Villemert. By Alexander Morrice

London: Printed by Knight and Company...for the Author: Sold by H. D. Symonds..., 1802. FIRST EDITION OF THIS TRANSLATION. 8vo, 210 x 135 mms. [iii] - vii [viii Contents], [5] - 164, recently rebound in quarter calf, morocco label, linen boards. A very good copy Boudier de Villemert (b. 1716) published L'Ami des Femmes in Paris in 1758, and it was first published in English in London in 1766. The work seems to have been as popular in America as it was in France, as most translations in the 18th century were published in America. Morrice's translation is different from the 18th century ones. The work consists of 13 short chapters on such matters as the rank of women in society and the studies suitable to women, where he observes, "To prohibit women from any kind of study, is to treat them as Mahomet did, who, in order to render them more voluptuous, judged it convenient to deny their having any soul."

[B3] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Musen-Almanach, für das Jahr 1802

Tübingen: in der Cotta'schen Buchhandlung, 1802. 12mo (16cm; 6.25"). vi, 293, [1] pp. Poetry, including lyric poetry by the two editors and such others as "Inhumanus," "Sophie B[ernhardi]," "Bonaventura," "Mnioch," and "Novalis." Bonaventura was the pseudonym of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Novalis the pseudonym of Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg; the latter's two poems were from his as then unpublished novel, Heinrich von Ofterdingen. This is => the first issue of Schlegel & Tieck's literary annual, patterned on the original Musen-Almanach (1796–1800) of Schiller, to which both were contributors. They broke with Schiller's adherence to the "old" and championed Romanticism in their publication. => All of the poems are early entrants in the German Romantic movement. Besides being the title of both those annuals, "Musen-Almanach" is a long-established genre term for these literary annuals published in Germany from ca. 1770 to the middle of the 19th century. Original publisher's wrappers with printed paper spine label, grey-green outside, light blue inside; dust-soiled with spine darkest. Uncut and partially unopened, with occasional light foxing (only). A very good copy.

        Die akustik

Leipzig: Breitkopf und Hartel. 1802. First edition, 4to, pp. [2], xxxii, 310, engraved vignette portrait on title page, 11 folding plates; original marbled paper-covered boards, paper label on spine; binding and label rubbed, but a good, sound copy, unrestored; contained in a brown leather slipcase. "Chladni (1756-1827), professor of physics in Breslau, was the first to reduce the general association between vibration and pitch to a tabular basis, and thus to lay the foundation of the modern science of acoustics. His first results were first reported in New Discoveries in the Theory of Sound, 1787, and were greatly enlarged upon in Acoustics, 1802. He spread sand on plates made of metal and glass, which were fixed in clamps. He then applied a violin bow to the edge of each plate and recorded the patterns produced thereby in the sand. These figures are still known by Chladni's name" (Printing and the Mind of Man 288b). Chladni was from an early age interested in music, and was himself an amateur musician “who designed and constructed two keyboard instruments, the euphomium and the clavicylinder, both being variations of the glass harmonica” (see DSB for a detailed account of his life and experiements).
