        Plate 249 - Melanthium Gramineum

      Paris 1802 - Pierre-Joseph Redouté A selection from Les Liliacées Stipple engravings with original hand color Paris: 1802-1816 21” x 14” Some discoloration around edges. The unequalled botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté occupies a central position in the development of European flower painting. Redouté had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, from Marie-Antoinette to Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in a turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, a testament to his greatness as an artist. Les Liliacées was Redouté's largest and most ambitious work and is generally considered his masterpiece, arguably rivaled only by Les Roses. Produced under the patronage of the Empress Josephine, for whom Redouté worked as botanical artist at her estate at Malmaison, these pristine examples represent landmark works in the field of flower illustration. The title Les Liliacées is misleading, as the work was of a much broader scope, including representatives of the lily, amaryllis, iris, orchid, and other families. The plates were executed by means of stipple engraving, a method that the artist himself perfected when he was unsatisfied with the effects garnered by traditional copper-plate engraving. As Redouté shrewdly observed, the delicacy and subtle elegance of his compositions could only be captured using a printing method equally fine. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complicated printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redouté provided. Les Liliacées records the plants of the lily family, and related flowers, that Josephine collected for her gardens at Malmaison. Redouté's small drawings, placed at the bottom of the main illustrations, record the anatomical features of each species so that each flower could be identified with precision and cultivated to perfection. In each illustration, as in his series Les Roses, the flowers are classical "portraits" which lack backgrounds or settings. The regal simplicity of the compositions allows the viewer to focus without distraction on the beauty and delicate complexity of the plants themselves. Redoutés's work represents a uniquely harmonious blend of scientific precision and supremely delicate rendering.

        THE CABINET-MAKER AND UPHOLSTERER'S DRAWING-BOOK. IN FOUR PARTS

      London: T. Bensley, 1802.. London: T. Bensley, 1802.. viii,viii,[5]-446,60,24,[8]pp. plus 123 plates. Thick quarto. Contemporary paneled calf, gilt, a.e.g. Corners lightly worn, boards rubbed. Bookplate on front pastedown. Very minor foxing. Very good. Third edition, revised and generally considered the best edition, of this important furniture- making treatise, with a full complement of engraved plates as well as the Appendix and Accompaniment. "... in 1791 his masterpiece, THE CABINET MAKER AND UPHOLSTERER'S DRAWING- BOOK, began to be published by subscription in fortnightly sections (forty-two in all), priced 1s. A slightly larger second edition appeared in 1794 and a third with some small amendments in 1802. A German version was translated by G. T. Wenzel and published in Leipzig. It was intended for practising members of the trade, and addressed 'to Cabinet-Makers and Upholsterers in General'. The 717 subscribers were almost entirely established furniture makers, in contrast to those of Thomas Chippendale's GENTLEMAN AND CABINET MAKER'S DIRECTOR (1754, 1755, and 1762) which had included members of aristocracy and gentry. Sheraton's intention (inspired perhaps by his Nonconformist background) was to improve the work of uneducated artisans by teaching them proportion and perspective drawing, since previous manuals had been deficient in this. He firmly believed in the immutable laws of 'Geometry and real Science' and wished to show how these could be applied to the ephemeral nature of taste particularly in furniture design. In his own words his intention was to make the Drawing Book 'as permanently useful as I could and to unite with usefulness the taste of the times' (Sheraton, Drawing Book, 1802 edn, 355)" - DNB. In fact the third edition contains more than "small amendments", and has always been considered the most desirable. DNB (online).

        MÉMOIRE SUR LA COLLECTION DES GRANDS ET PETITS VOYAGES, et de la collection des voyages de Melchisédech Thevenot.

      1802 - Paris, Baudouin, 1802. FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

Light creasing scattered throughout with minor pinholes at some fold intersections, a few minor marginal tears and chips, else overall very bright and clean. A hurried letter responding to Allen, who had requested Edwards' representation in a lawsuit against Capt. Joshua Tanton of Lutterlough Township and Silas Hathaway of Highate Township over disputed land titles. Allen complained to Edwards, then consumed with his duties as United States Attorney for Connecticut, that his rivals were taking measures "to gain my Property...to Imbarris [sic] me in Every Possible way so as to Provent [sic] me from having money to Dischar[g]e Every Demand that Can be prodused [sic] & to have money to Pay Land Taxes Defray Expence [sic] of Courts &cÃ?î. Allen also asked Edwards if he knew where he could borrow $20,000. (Ira Allen to Pierpont Edwards, 8 May 1802, John J. Duffy, ed., Ethan Allen and His Kin Correspondence, 1772-1819. (1998) Vol. 2, 728-9.) Edwards had agreed to undertake the trip and attempted the journey at the end of May, but schedules and bad roads prevented it: "Finding here an opportunity of writing to you I embrace it, being the first which has presented since I gave up my journey to Burlington ó Conformably to my promise[?] to make preparation to leave New Haven on Saturday the 29th of May, but that day proved to be unexpectedly Stormy; the next day, being the Sabbath of our Savior I could not be permitted to travel; on monday [sic] I began my journey, and travelled one day towards Burlington, but found the road so very heavy, as to render it impossible for me to arrive at Burlington, untill [sic] it would be too late, I therefore returnedÃ?". Edwards offers to attempt the journey again, upon Allenís request. Allen had only recently returned to Vermont after an eight year hiatus in Europe. He had travelled to France in 1795 seeking military assistance in seizing Quebec from the British to create an independent republic of United Columbia. While en route to North America with a stand of 20,000 muskets and 24 pieces of artillery, the British captured him at sea and impounded his cargo. He spent the next eight years in court seeking the release of his property.

His father intended him to be a clergyman, but Iffland preferred the stage, and at eighteen ran away to Gotha in order to prepare himself for a theatrical career. The form of play in which he was most at home, both as an actor and playwright, was the domestic drama, the sentimental play of everyday life. His works display a thorough mastery of the technical necessities of the stage, and a remarkable power of devising effective situations. His best characters are simple and natural, fond of domestic life. His best-known plays are Die Jger, Dienstpflicht, Die Advokaten, Die Mndel and Die Hagstolzen. Iffland was also a dramatic critic, and German actors placed high value on his reasonings and hints about their works in his Almanach fr Theater und Theaterfreunde. During 1798-1802 he issued his Dramatischen Werke in sixteen volumes, to which he added an autobiography (Meine theatralische Laufbahn). During 1807-1809 Iffland put out two volumes of Neue dramatische Werke. Previous owner's bookplates to front pastedowns and ink inscriptions to front of some volumes.         The Bardic Museum, of Primitive British Literature;

      London: Edward Jones, 1802 VG, 1st ed, 1 pl. In modern quarter cloth with blue marbled boards, spine with printed title. Internally, new endpapers, no inscriptions, frontis, figures drawn by Ibbetson, landscape by J Smith and etched by Rowlandson, [3], (iv-xx), [1], 2-96 pp history, 97-112 music scores, 1 pl, 2 printers devices, occasional contemp. ink marginal note, printed by A Strahan, Printers Street, London, light marginal water stain to last few pages. A very Good copy. Jones had prepared a 3rd vol, a portion of which was published at his death, the remainder being issued later. Title continues: And other admirable rarities; forming the second volume of the Musical, Poetical, and Historical Relicks of the Welsh Bards and Druids: etc. (Lowndes 1225. Livbri Walliae 2848). Jones, harpist and music antiquary, was a serious scholar who made a notable contribution to the antiquarianism which typified much of the scholarship of his period. His library was extensive, and his research into both primary and secondary sources, including the old Welsh laws and Welsh grammars, enabled him not only to present music, but also to write in some depth about it. An emphasis on scholarly discourse is characteristic of his major works. For instance, two-thirds of his first important work, a collection of Welsh melodies entitled The Musical and Poetical Relicks of the Welsh Bards (1784), is devoted to a series of essays on Welsh music and the bardic tradition, including an extensive ‘Historical account of the Welsh bards’. The papers of George Dodington, 1st Baron Melcombe had been placed at Adolphus's disposal in the preparation of his history, and they enabled him to throw light on the conduct of Lord Bute, and on the political transactions of the earlier years of the reign of George III, who, in conversation, commented on the accuracy with which some of the first measures taken after his accession had been described. Extremely scarce.. The volumes are in excellent condition with occasional foxing throughout, but unmarked, tight, square and clean. Volume Two (only) has been professionally rebacked with the original spine laid on. An extremely elegant set. VERY GOOD. . 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

        Die Harfenspielerin

      . Aquarell auf Papier, verso in Bleistift eine Mondlandschaft mit Urne und Säule, blau aquarelliert, 17,0 x 13,7 cm. Die Darstellung der musizierenden jungen Dame gehört zum unbekannten Frühwerk Peter Ferdinand Deurers, so dass sie selbst für Aufschluss sorgen muss, obwohl im Bilde selbst wenig auf die Identität und Spielstätte der Dreiviertelfigur deutet. Die Harfenistin trägt eine Chemise a la grecque aus cremefarbenem Stoff und das braune Haar in frei kräuselnden Locken. Nach neuester Empiremode gekleidet, verzichtet sie, abgesehen vom schmalen Ring an der linken Hand, auf Schmuck und farbige Accessoires. Ähnlich elegant zurückhaltend nimmt sich das Ambiente aus, worin alles fehlt, was auf größere Zusammenhänge verweisen könnte. Im Verein mit dem neutralen Hintergrund beherrscht die Darstellung ein auf Braun- und Weißtöne gedämpftes, den Raum in eine Stimmung gespannter Ruhe versetzendes Kolorit. Übersichtlich strukturiert, verschränkt das Interieur die stereometrischen Formen des Instruments und die menschliche Gestalt zur Einheit, die dem Umstand Rechnung trägt, dass die Harfenistin in Salons des 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhunderts als "eine Pretiose der gehobenen Hausmusik" geschätzt wurde, also in besonderem Maße Kultur und Status der Porträtierten (und ihrer Familie) repräsentierte. Zum anderen war die Harfe Attribut der heiligen Cäcilia und Allegorie der Musik, was freilich weniger ins Gewicht fällt als ein weiterer rollenspezifischer Aspekt: Die infolge ihres Klanges als "zum Ding verdichtete Natur" betrachtete Harfe war durch solche "Elementarität ein angestammtes Instrument der Frau". Wie die fashionable Erscheinung eine Entstehung im ersten Jahrzehnt des 19. Jahrhunderts nahelegt, darf aus der gediegenen Schmucklosigkeit gefolgert werden, dass der Ort keinen adeligen Salon zeigt und es sich bei der jungen Frau um eine Tochter aus bürgerlichem Hause handelt. Deurers Aquarell teilt den klassizistischen Duktus seiner ersten überlieferten Arbeiten, den zwischen 1802 und 1806 entstandenen mythologischen Wandbildern in Leimen und Heidelberg, wirkt jedoch lebendiger und selbständiger. Die insofern auch stilistisch evidente Datierung in das zweite Jahrfünft spricht für eine Lokalisierung der Szene nach Mannheim, wo Deurer die längste Zeit jenes Jahrzehnts ansässig war. Dort nicht nur im Beruf glücklich, ehelichte der Maler im Jahre 1805 Susanna (Suzette) Fröhlich (1776-1835), die als "Tochter eines wohlhabenden Reichsposthalters und Gastwirts in Mannheim" wohl kaum weniger kultiviert gewesen ist als ihre explizit "gebildete" Schwester Catharina. Unter dieser Voraussetzung ist der Verdacht erlaubt, in der empfindsam geschilderten Harfenistin jene Suzette zu erkennen, wie sie Deurer vor oder kurz nach der Heirat beim Konzert erlebt und mit künstlerischem Feingefühl wie menschlicher Zuneigung ins Bild gesetzt haben könnte. Wem das Augenmerk seiner Harfenspielerin gilt, läge daher auf der Hand - demjenigen, dem sie Modell sitzt und dessen Blick der ihre so verheißungsvoll antwortet, als teilte sie das Lob, das Goethes Märchen' dem "liebenswürdigsten" Mädchen Lilie zuteilwerden lässt: "Welch ein Glück, Euchanzusehen, welch einen Himmel verbreitet Eure Gegenwart um Euch her! Wie die Harfe so reizend in Eurem Schoße lehnt, wie Eure Arme sie so sanft umgeben, wie sie sich nach Eurer Brust zu sehnen scheint und wie sie unter der Berührung Eurer schlanken Finger so zärtlich klingt! Dreifach glücklicher Jüngling, der du ihren Platz einnehmen konntest!"
