Zweyte verbesserte Auflage. - Gest. Nebentitel: Die Gemalte Welt oder der gemeinnützige Lateiner. Leipzig, C. Weigel u. Nürnberg, A. G Schneider, 1790. Mit 50 (inkl. gest. Titel) Kupfern auf 49 Tafeln. XII, 151 S. Ockerfarbener Pappbd. d. Zt., Deckel von schmaler vergold. (oxydiert) Bordüre eingefasst; vord. Gelenk leicht beschabt, Ecken etw. bestoßen.

. . Pilz S. 340f. (unter Johann Georg Lederer); Brüggemann/Evers 504 (4. Aufl. v. 1802); Monschein 81 (ausführlich). - Sehr seltenes, reizend illustriertes Werk. - Schweizer Postkonto vorhanden. **

Shakespeare Macbeth Act IV Scene I a dark cave. In the middle a Cauldron boiling. Three Witches, Macbeth, Hecate, &c

John & Josiah Boydell, London 1802 - A superb impression of one of the greatest images in Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, from the original painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds "This is Shakespeare on a grand scale, the Shakespeare of titanic emotion, of compelling gesture and vivid gaze.the greatest of the engravings.are by any standard powerful works with an inescapable emotional force behind them. They speak directly to us." (A. E. Santaniello, The Boydell Shakespeare Prints, New York, 1979) In 1786, the printseller John Boydell (1719-1804) "embarked upon the most important enterprise of his life, viz. the publication, by subscription, of a series of prints illustrative of [the works of] Shakespeare, after pictures painted expressly for the work by English artists. For this purpose he gave commissions to all the most celebrated painters of this country for pictures, and built a gallery in Pall Mall for their exhibition. The execution of this project extended over several years. In 1789 the Shakespeare Gallery contained thirty-four pictures, in 1791 sixty-five, in 1802 one hundred and sixty-two, of which eighty-four were of large size. The total number of works executed was 170, three of which were pieces of sculpture, and the artists employed were thirty-three painters and two sculptors, Thomas Banks and the Hon. Mrs. Damer. It appears from the preface to the catalogue of 1789, and from other recorded statements of Boydell, that he wished to do for English painting what he had done for English engraving, to make it respected by foreigners." ( DNB ) Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was considered in his time the greatest artist of the era, and the brightest star of the constellation of artists who contributed to Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery. Here, in a great whirlwind of otherworldly beings, he shows Macbeth confronting, as it were, his true fate, having been deceived by a partial revelation at the start of the action. Macbeth's muscular, commanding figure waves his long dagger uselessly at the insubstantial spirits and ghosts, while the ghoulish witches and their entourage black magical beings calmly watch him. Cf. Santaniello (op.cit.). Stipple engraving. Printed on wove Whatman paper. In perfect condition. Image size: 17 1/4 x 23 1/8 inches.

        The China Limodorn

London 1802 - Dr. Robert John Thornton (1768-1837) hand-colored engraving 21.75" x 17", The China Limodorn, is from his book titled The Temple of Flora, or Garden of Nature, Picturesque Botanical Plates of the new Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus. Thornton began to indulge his lifelong love for botany in 1799. Determined to surpass the Germans in scholarship and the French in printing artistry, he planned a book of philosophic and literary distinction, illustrated by some of the best painters working in Britain. Within the book there are five frontispieces, portraits and allegorical compositions with thirty-two plates of flowers. Thornton made up each set with twenty-nine or thirty-two in varied arrangements. The lengthy text was primarily written by Thornton himself, where artists were commissioned to design and paint the images. The majority of designs were done by Peter Henderson and Philip Reinagle. The intaglio plates - a varied combination of mezzotint, aquatint, line and stipple engraving, finished with watercolor -were executed by Bartolozzi and other English masters. The title notwithstanding, few of the plates are of scientific interest. It is the forceful stylization of flowers, together with their historical, allegorical and/or fanciful backgrounds (prescribed by Thornton) that place the Temple of Flora among the greatest botanical books of all time. Dr. Thornton, who gave his life and his fortune to this work, created one of England's monuments to Romantic idealism. With slight foxing and staining in margins, this plate has dramatic vibrancy and coloring and is in excellent condition.

New York: Printed by David Longworth, 1802. - Two volumes. 506; 446pp. Portrait in first volume. Contemporary calf, spines gilt, leather labels. A scarce work, and one of the most valuable firsthand narratives of the American Revolution in the South. He was eventually promoted to the position of brigadier-general in the Continental Army. Moultrie fought in several important southern battles, including the defense of Fort Sullivan in 1776, and helped lead the defense of Charleston from the British before his forces were finally overcome in 1780. He was taken prisoner and held for more than a year, after which the British tried to bring him to their side by offering him a command in Jamaica.         On the Theory of Light and Colours [An Account of some Cases of the Production of Colours, not hitherto described]. The Bakerian Lecture.

      W. Bulmer for G. & W. Nicol, London 1802 - In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Volume 92, Part I, 1802, pp. 12-48 & 387-97. London: W. Bulmer for G. & W. Nicol, 1802. 2 parts, 4to. Engraved plate by Basire in part 1. Red modern faux leather. Parts I and II bound in one volume, 528 pp. Article Part 1: Dibner 152; PMM 259; Norman 2275. Article Part 2 Norman 2276 - FIRST EDITIONS. Part 1 is 'an epoch-making contribution to the theory of light in all its phases'. Read as the Bakerian lecture, November 12, 1801, Young firmly endorsed Huygen's wave theory of light, displacing Newton's corpuscular theory which had been favored for most of the 18th century, and so found explanations for unresolved optical phenomena such as interference. Part 2 is a further explanation of the wave theory. - Also in this volume: WOLLASTON, William Hyde. A Method of examining refractive and dispersive Powers, by prismatic Reflection. In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 92, Part I, 1802, 4to. pp. 365-380 - Sparrow, Milestones of Science 198. - The third major scientific discovery announced in this volume of the Transactions is Wollaston's discovery of black lines crossing the colored band of the solar spectrum. "The science of astrophysics began" with Wollaston's report of this phenomenon to the Royal Society (Singer, Short History of Scientific Ideas to 1900). Wollaston's examination of the solar spectrum, here described, revealed for the first time the numerous black lines afterwards connected with the name of Fraunhofer; and his paper is one of the most significant "incunabula" of the discovery of spectrum analysis. Twelve years later the appearance of these dark lines (called "Fraunhofer lines") was confirmed by the maker of Wollaston's original spectroscope. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The spectacular open blooms of the passion flower are shown climbing a corinthian column, with a classical building in the right background. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Alpine Lovers; Les Amans des Alpes

London: Published by H. Macklin, Poets Gallery Fleet Street, 1802. This is a fine colour printed stipple after a painting by Francis Wheatley, depicting two young lovers in the countryside. Wheatley was born and trained in London, and in 1769 was one of the first students admitted to the newly founded Royal Academy. Although he initially practiced as a landscape painter, by the mid 1770s he had become a popular painter of small-scale portraits and informal 'conversation-pieces'. From the 1780s onwards, Wheatley turned increasingly to genre scenes that were perfectly attuned to the sensibilities of the period. Today he is generally remembered for his Cries of London, which depicted street vendors such as milkmaids and fruit sellers engaged in their trade. Wheatley's work is distinguished by an unerring sense of proportion and rhythm, beautifully demonstrated in this perfectly simple portrait of rural love, which becomes a monumental expression of affection and desire. Webster, Francis Wheatley p. 187. Colour printed stipple. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark on all sides. Some skimming to surface of paper on verso of sheet. Image size: 13 7/8 x 12 inches.

Plate 199 - Lilium Candidum (Madonna Lily)

Pierre-Joseph Redout?Hand-colored stipple engraving from Les Liliac?esParis: 1802-181631 1/4” x 24 1/4” framedThe unequalled botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redout? occupies a central position in the development of European flower painting. Redout? had, as pupils or patrons, five queens and empresses of France, fromMarie-Antoinette to Empress Josephine and her successor, Marie-Louise. Despite many changes of regime in a turbulent epoch, he worked without interruption, a testament to his greatness as an artist. Les Liliac?es was Redout?'s largest and most ambitious work and is generally considered his masterpiece, arguably rivaled only by Les Roses. Produced under the patronage of the Empress Josephine, for whom Redout? worked as botanical artist at her estate at Malmaison, these pristine examples represent landmark works in the field of flower illustration. The title Les Liliac?es is misleading, as the work was of a much broader scope, including representatives of the lily, amaryllis, iris, orchid, and other families. The plates were executed by means of stipple engraving, a method that the artist himself perfected when he was unsatisfied with the effects garnered by traditional copper-plate engraving. As Redout? shrewdly observed, the delicacy and subtle elegance of his compositions could only be captured using a printing method equally fine. The luminosity of stipple engraving is particularly suited to the reproduction of botanical detail. The medium involved engraving a copper plate with a dense grid of dots that could be modulated to convey delicate gradations of color. Because the ink rested on the paper in miniscule dots, it did not obscure the "light" of the paper beneath the color. After this complicated printing process was complete, the prints were finished by hand in watercolor, so as to conform to the exquisite models Redout? provided.??? ??? ??? ??? ??? Les Liliac?es records the plants of the lily family, and related flowers, that Josephine collected for her gardens at Malmaison. Redout?'s small drawings, placed at the bottom of the main illustrations, record the anatomical features of each species so that each flower could be identified with precision and cultivated to perfection. In each illustration, as in his series Les Roses, the flowers are classical "portraits" which lack backgrounds or settings. The regal simplicity of the compositions allows the viewer to focus without distraction on the beauty and delicate complexity of the plants themselves. Redout?s's work represents a uniquely harmonious blend of scientific precision and supremely delicate rendering.

        A Lecture on Heads

London - T. Bensley, 1802 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Leather bound copy of this interesting lecture with frontispiece and in text illustrations. Stevens' satiric lecture on heads, fashion, and the whims and foibles of those who have heads was first performed in 1764, and met with such popular acclaim that pirated editions soon began to surface. Lewes, an actor who performed the lecture himself, describes these problems in his Address to the Public. The lecture owes much to Stevens' observant wit, and its popularity into the 19th century to the craze for physiognomy, which it parodies. Stevens [1710-1784] was a poet and playwright, but nothing he did ever equaled the popularity of this lecture. He also achieved some minor note as (apparently) the person who coined the term merry-go-round for carousels, in a 1729 poem. Condition: The volume has been rebound and the binding is tight and firm with all pages securely attached. There is some wear to the extremities including scratches to the leather. The spine is split and the leather is peeling in places. The original title on the spine has been replaced and this is also peeling away. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright apart from the occasional spot and odd handling mark. There is a library sticker on the front pastedown and at least seven library stamps on various pages but priced accordingly and scarce in any condition. There is also an ink signature on the frontispiece. Overall the volume is in good condition..

London - F. and C. Rivington et al., 1802 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A complete collection of the poetry, plays and essaysof Edward Young. Illustrated throughout withsixteen engraved plates, including an engraved title page and frontispiece. Young, living in a time when patronage was slowly fading out, was notable for urgently seeking patronage for his poetry, his theatrical works, and his career in the church: he failed in each area. He never received the degree of patronage that he felt his work had earned, largely because he picked patrons whose fortunes were about to turn downward. Including The Consolation, The Dignity of Man, The Brothers and many more. Though his praise was often unearned, often fulsome, he could write, False praises are the whoredoms of the pen / And prostitute fair fame to worthless men. Complete in three volumes.         Minstrelsy of the Scottish BorderConsisting of Historical and Romantic BalladsIn Two Volumes

Kelso - James Ballantyne 1802 - A first edition of this highly sought after work from prolific poet, Walter Scott. One of the eight-hundred copies originally published in 1802, which sold out within it's first six months of publication. Consisting of historical and romantic ballads collected in the southern counties of Scotland, founded upon local tradition. Featuring the original engraved frontispiece to volume one. Collated complete. Scott's interest in the folk traditions of the Border region stemmed from early childhood stays at Sandyknowe, when he heard ballads from the lips of his grandmother Barbara Scott and his favourite Aunt Jenny. As an older boy, he thrilled to the medieval ballads collected in Bishop Thomas Percy's Reliques of Ancient English Poetry. Scott began collecting ballads himself in yearly trips to the Borders from 1792 onwards. He first had the idea of publishing a collection in 1796, but it was not until he renewed contact with his old schoolfriend, the printer James Ballantyne, that the idea bore fruit. In 1799 Ballantyne had published An Apology for Tales of Terror which contained ballads by Robert Southey, Matthew 'Monk' Lewis, John Aikin, and Scott himself. He now welcomed the idea of publishing a volume devoted entirely to ballads, a genre rendered newly fashionable by Wordsworth's and Coleridge's Lyrical Ballads. The volume's success laid the foundations of James Ballantyne's career as a printer. 'I shall ever think', he wrote, 'the printing the Scottish Minstrelsy one of the most fortunate circumstances of my life'. Completewith the originaltwo volumes, although without the later publishedthird volume, which was published a year later. Condition: In contemporary mottled calf bindings with gilt borders. Externally, both volumes are rubbed, with slight wear to extremities. Very slight loss to the spine label of volume two. Both front boards are held by the cords only, with the rear joints slightly starting. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound with bright pages throughout. Some instances of spotting, and light off-setting to the title page of volume one. Evidence of past worming from the title page, through to xxx of volume one. Ink inscription to the endpapers of both volumes dated 1920. Overall: GOOD, with a VERY GOOD interior. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Ryacotta, in the Barramah'l

published Thomas Daniell, London 1802 - A very fine view of the Barramah'l region that had just recently been wrested from Tippoo Sultan's grasp when the Daniells visited. "Rayakottai formed part of a chain of military outposts used by Tipu Sultan's forces on their campaigns in the Tamil country. A British flag flying proudly from a lookout halfway up the hill proclaims the recent British victory. Rings of walls encircling the central granite rock at successive levels were clearly visible to the Daniells, but can hardly be traced now" (Martinelli/Michell p.144). The Daniells' Oriental Scenery is considered to be the finest illustrated works on India. Thomas Daniell and his nephew William spent nine years in India making studies, sketches and drawings of the scenery, architecture, and antiquities that graced the countryside. They then devoted a further thirteen years to publishing their remarkably accurate aquatints. In Britain, the impact was explosive. A cult of Indian architecture, landscaping and interior decoration arose, with the Royal Pavilion at Brighton as its centerpiece. The Daniells gave the English public their first accurate look at the exotic sub-continent. Their great achievement still lies in their ability to blend the picturesque with the real, resulting in images that capture the European taste for the sublime landscape, while still remaining faithful to their subjects. The Daniells brought the romance of the English landscape to the antiquities of India and provided England with an accurate vision of this wondrous country. Consisting of one hundred and forty-four views, published in six parts, the work was issued in seven stages: three sets of twenty-four plates titled Oriental Scenery with title dates of 1795, 1797, and 1801; twelve plates titled Antiquities of India dated 1799; twenty-four plates titled Hindoo Excavations dated 1803; twenty-four plates titled Views in Hindoostan dated 1807; and twelve further plates of Antiquities of India published without a title page in 1808. All plates were engraved by the Daniells and all are taken from their drawings save the twenty-four plates of Hindoo Excavations , which are after drawings by James Wales.       Philadelphia: Printed for The Editor & Elizabeth Dickens. 1802. First. Periodical. Folio. A collection of 17 weekly issues of The Port Folio, containing a series of six satirical poems directed against Thomas Jefferson, specifically concerning his relations with Sally Hemings. Each weekly issue consists of eight pages, untrimmed as originally published, and professionally sewn into four sets of consecutive issues. [Set one]: July 3 -- July 31, Nos. 26-30; [set two]: October 2 -- October 30, Nos. 39-43; [set three]: November 6 -- November 27, Nos. 44-47; [set four]: December 4 -- December 18, Nos. 48-50. Overall browning and scattered foxing, the last two issues from December (nos. 49 and 50) are clipped at the bottom right corner (with minimal loss of text), good.Founded by Joseph Dennie and Asbury Dickens in Philadelphia in January 1801, and edited by Dennie, The Port Folio quickly became the most important magazine devoted to literature and politics in the United States. During the period of its greatest influence, from 1802 to 1805, Dennie had organized a distinguished circle of mostly pro-Federalist contributors known for their "liveliness, urbanity, and wit." The Republicans and Jefferson in particular were frequently attacked in its pages. Thus when James T. Callender first published the allegation that Jefferson had fathered several children by his slave Sally Hemings (in the September 1st issue of the Richmond Recorder), Dennie was quick to exploit and expand upon the charge in this famous series of satirical poems, including one now known to have been written by John Quincy Adams. A detailed list of the six poems is available. .

THE HISTORY OF THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE

      T. Cadell and W. Davies, London 1802 - 8vo, Internally, each volume is in very good condition, with little age-toning, or foxing, and no markings, or scribblings. THE OXFORD COMPANION TO ENGLISH LITERATURE calls "The History." "the most celebrated historical work in English literature" (p. 261). Gibbon (1727-1794) formed his plan of the "History" during a tour of Italy in 1764-65. The first volume was issued in 1776 (in quarto size), followed by volumes II and III in 1781, and the last three volumes in 1788. It covers the period from the age of Trajan and the Antoines to the taking of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453. Subsequently re-published in 1783 in an octavo edition, of which this is "A New Edition", in twelve volumes, with the frontispiece (in vol. I, of Gibbon) from the 1780 edition. Besides the frontispiece, vol. I contains a very nice folding map (measuring about 17" square), dated 1781, and showing the "Eastern Part of the Roman Empire" designed by Thomas Kitchin. Vol. II contains an equally nice (although smaller) folding map, also by Kitchin and dated 1781, showing "Parts of Europe and Asia adjacent to Constantinople". Vol. XII contains a comprehensive General Index to the work. This is a most attractive set, intenally, being tight, clean and little soiled by age. However, the bindings are in a less than desirable state. It may be taken that the binding of each volume has some defect, whether split joints, or tape remains. Altogether, this is an ideal candidate to be re-bound by the new owner, who would otherwise have just cause to be proud of this fine work. Norton 40. Twelve volume set, uniformly bound in full speckled calf. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Imbault-Huart) ; Garrison & Morton, 403 : "One of medicine's most important books. Bichat revolutionized descriptive anatomy." ; Heirs of Hippocrates, 756: "This is an important book, since it is a palpable step toward modern medicine." ; Lilly, Notable medical books, p. 157 ; Dobson, Anatomical Eponyms, p. 25 ("Bichat's fat pad, - fissure, - canal, - ligament, - fossa").

Paris: Garnery, 1802. Folio (20 2/8 x 13 2/8 inches). Half-title. 50 engraved plates by Plee, Tardieu, and others after Redoute (some variable spotting throughout). Contemporary French half red morocco, scarlet paper boards, gilt. Provenance: With the engraved armorial bookplate of the Earls of Derby at Knowsley Hall on the front paste-down, and inscribed with a note about acquisition dated 1816 on the front free endpaper; Robert De Belder, sale in these rooms, 27 April 1997, lot 59. First edition, and a LARGE PAPER COPY, probably acquired by Edward Smith Stanley, thirteenth earl of Derby [formerly Lord Stanley] (1775-1851), politician and naturalist, who was "prominent in the world of natural history, especially as one of the figureheads of the science of zoological classification, particularly the taxonomy of birds. He was president of the Linnean Society of London from 1828 to 1834, and president of the Zoological Society of London for twenty years from 1831 until his death. He not only encouraged the reading of accounts of new species by chairing meetings of the two societies, but contributed many scientific papers himself to the proceedings of the Zoological Society and donated many specimens to its collections. He actively encouraged collectors in the field, such as Thomas Bridges in South America, Joseph Burke in South Africa and North America, John MacGillivray in Australia and Indonesia, and Thomas Whitfield in west Africa. With contributions from such individuals, and from other zoological contacts, he formed at Knowsley Hall, near Liverpool, a private and very extensive menagerie of birds and mammals. His record of keeping and breeding rare and later extinct species of bird is still regarded as extraordinary; he was the first to breed in captivity such species as the nene (or Hawaiian goose) and the passenger pigeon. He was probably the first person to breed the Australian budgerigar in captivity in Britain, hatching two chicks in his aviaries in February 1848. Fish and reptiles were also kept in the Knowsley collections; the first live African lungfish (Protopterus sp.) seen in Britain were brought there from the Gambia in 1843. They were placed in warm tanks within the plant-houses and successfully induced from their mud cocoons. Derby also formed a fine museum from specimens purchased at auction or contributed by his collectors and contacts, and from animals from his menagerie as they died. One of the last, an Asian parrot, was an undescribed species which his assistant Louis Fraser named Lord Derby's parakeet, Palaeornis derbyanus, in 1850. Many other species are named after the thirteenth earl, such as the Stanley crane, Anthropoides paradisea; the white gallinule, Porphyrio stanleyi; Derby's puffbird, Trochilus derbyi; Lord Derby's eland, Tragelaphus derbianus; and the woolly opossum, Caluromys derbianus. In 1814 Henry Salt brought back from Abyssinia twelve new species of bird, which Derby named scientifically, calling one of them, a lovebird, Psittacus taranta Stanley. Many of the forms in his menagerie were painted by such famous artists as Josef Wolf and Edward Lear. Lear also composed many of his limericks for the Derby children" (DNB). Redoute and Candolle first collaborated on "Plantes Grasses." as it is better known; their magnum opus was "Les Liliacees" (1802-1816). Dunthorne 242; Great Flower Books, p.53; Nissen BBI 319; Hunt, Redouteana 9; Stafleu TL2 984. Catalogued description prepared for and on behalf of Arader Galleries by Kate Hunter..

THÉORIE DES JARDINS, Ou L'Art Des Jardins De La Nature.

Paris: Panckoucke 1802 - The enlarged and partially revised second edition, which includes significant material supplementing the original version of 1776. The newly added preface (128 pages) provides, among other things, an extended commentary on writings on garden design published since the first edition. There are also 75 pages of end notes and a new 100 page section on trees, consisting primarily of a "Tableau Dendrologique" listing the various features of over 1000 varieties of trees. Morel's THEORIE, following shorter works by Girardin and Watelet, presented the most thorough treatise on the new theories of natural garden design which dominated French taste at the end of the 18th century. It was also the first treatise on garden design in the natural style (French or English) to have been written by a professional rather than an amateur. Morel's practical experience is evident throughout, which may help account for the high esteem in which the book was held by French landscape gardeners far into the nineteenth century. Drawing heavily on Whately's OBSERVATIONS ON MODERN GARDENING, Morel rejected the formal symmetry of classical French gardens in favor of the picturesque and "natural" style associated with the English. He did not, however, actually visit England and its gardens until after the publication of the first edition, and the comments he added to this edition are the first to reflect first-hand experience of the places Whately had described. All these additions make this the generally preferred edition for purposes of study. Ganay 98. Two volumes, 8vo (21 x 14 cm); (viii) + cxxviii + 234 + (1, errata), (iv) + 340 + (2, errata) pp. + engraved frontispiece. Original plain blue paper wraps with printed spine labels; extremities rubbed; last three leaves of volume one stained; some margin soiling of first two leaves of volume two; a wide-margined copy with text with edges untrimmed.
