Kupfertafeln. Erste deutsche Ausgabe von "On the musical modes of the Hindus" von William Jones, sehr selten. - MGG II, 1871. - "William Jones, as several scholars have pointed out, was a versatile philologist and a polymath who pioneered new fields of research and wrote on a wide range of topics, including Indian music. His publications, especially his translations of Kalidasa’s play Sakuntala and Jayadeva’s lyrical poem Gitagovinda, had a profound influence on scholars and philosophers in England, France and Germany, and also affected major nineteenth-century poets and novelists. On the Musical Modes of the Hindus was written in 1784 and published eight years later in the third volume of Asiatic Researches, the widely read transactions of the Asiatic Society of Bengal. It was first reprinted ("verbatim from the Calcutta edition") in London in 1799, and a German translation of it appeared as early as 1802 in Ueber die Musik der Indier, a richly illustrated anthology of various European writings on Indian music compiled by Friedrich Hugo von Dalberg. On the Musical Modes of the Hindus is of little relevance today. But two hundred years ago when virtually nothing was known about Indian music in Europe it was a landmark. It was the main source on India for scholars who began debating the origins of music in their general histories. In many of these works, even in some of the histories that appeared at the beginning of the twentieth century, William Jones is quoted as the authority of Indian music. While Jones glorified the greatness of India’s past and had more appreciation for Sanskrit texts on music than the music itself, the importance of his work was that he made European scholars aware of the unique system of Indian ragas. ."         An Essay on Abstinence from Animal Food, as a Moral Duty.

Printed for Richard Phillips, No. 71, St Pauls Church-Yard. 1802 - [4], 236pp; 8vo. A little light foxing. Contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards with vellum cornerpieces, gilt banded spine, with ducal gilt crest and the letter 'N' at foot, red gilt morocco label. v.g. Bronson, Joseph Ritson, 27; Bitting, Gastronomic Bibliography, page 399. FIRST EDITION. Ritson's last published work consisted of a defence of his life-long vegetarianism, and has become one of the very earliest manifestos for the cause. He believed that food constituted one of the determinants of human character, and thus carnivores, he insisted, were cruel, choleric and bad-tempered. Meat eating led to robbery, sycophancy and tyranny, and encouraged the predatory instinct. Although his ideas were never to achieve mass appeal, in the early 19th century they were influential. Shelley read the book avidly and became one of the most vociferous converts to this creed, as did his wife Mary, who notably presented Frankenstein's monster as a vegetarian who refused the food of man and declined to 'destroy the lamb and the kid, to glut my appetite; acorns and berries afford me sufficient nourishment'.       Madrid: Imprenta Real, 1802. - 2 volumes (text and atlas). Text volume: 8vo (8 x 5-1/2 inches): [16], CLXVIII (i.e. 168), 185 pages; folded letterpress table between pp. 168-169, and errata leaf (p. 185) at end (this volume bound in 19th-century black morocco over green marbled paper boards, gilt spine, corners strengthened). Atlas volume: folio (12-1/2 x 8-1/4 inches): [4] pages (letterpress title-page and "Explicacion" table of contents; one or two spots and a pale waterstain in the top margin of the preliminaries), 17 fine engraved plates comprising 9 maps (4 folding) and 8 illustrations (2 folding) of scenes of the Pacific Northwest and its native inhabitants (this volume bound in 19th century black morocco over red marbled paper boards, gilt lettering on spine somewhat faded). PROVENANCE: paste-down of text volume bears bookplates of W. J. Holliday. "La Biblioteca del Suroeste" collection (ca. 1940s-1950s), and of Irving W. Robbins, Jr. (1919-1995). FIRST EDITION OF A RARE AND IMPORTANT WORK ON THE SPANISH EXPLORATION OF NOOTKA SOUND AND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST. Hill calls this a "masterly work.and an account of the voyage commanded by Captains Alcala Galiano and Valdes. They were detailed to make a complete reconnaissance and survey of the continental shore at the east end of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Neah Bay, Esqimalt Bay (where they met Captain George Vancouver's expedition), and Nootka Sound were all visited. several Indian vocabularies are given, including the Eslen, Runsien, and Nootka languages" (Hill 570). In addition to the journal, the work contains a "masterly resumé of Spanish voyages to the coast, written by Martin Fernandez de Navarette, whose name does not appear in the work. He was an accomplished scholar, and his knowledge of Spanish archives was superior to that of any of his contemporaries. The work is sometimes attributed to Jose Espinosa y Tello, the cosmographer on the Malaspina expedition, whose own account of the voyage was published in 1809 but given his accumulated study, it is more likely that Fernandez de Navarrete authored this summary of Spanish exploration of the Northwest Coast, especially in light of the fact that neither Palau nor Sabin associate Espinosa y Tello with the work. Fernandez de Navarrete was a member of a family with long-standing naval tradition and was a career naval officer with access to privileged information. He was instrumental in founding the Deposito Hidrografico in Madrid and compiled a great deal of data about Spanish naval history, including the transcription of over forty immense volumes of rare manuscripts regarding Spanish voyages since the fifteenth century.         Lyrical Ballads, with Pastoral and Other Poems. Vol. I: 3rd edn; Vol. II: 2nd edn. 2 vols.

T.N. Longman & O. Rees. 1802 - Expertly rebound in appropriate half calf, marbled boards with vellum-tipped corners, red leather labels. With a slip in vol. II from Wigan Public Libraries. v.g. Wise (6). The first edition of 1798 comprised one volume only. For the second edition, a second volume of poems was added, with vol. I only designated ?second edition? For the next edition, 1802, the one here presented, vol. I was thus the ?third edition?, while vol. II was the ?second edition? In this edition Wordsworth further expanded the celebrated preface, as well as editing the poems in several places. One of Wordsworth?s poems was excised completely, as well as Coleridge?s ?The Dungeon?, reducing his contribution to just four pieces. The Argument to Ancient Mariner was also omitted. Written into the prelims of vol. I, a sonnet in contemp. ms., commending the work to Fanny: ?These Ballads Lyrical my love, May pleasure give, and time improve.? A slip from Wigan public library, and an earlier bookseller?s description, attributes the inscription to the occasional poet and authoress Anne Cox, 1766-1830. From 1803 she was Mrs Nathaniel George Woodroffe, her most notable publication being Michael, the Married Man, 1827. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The history of the administration of John Adams, esq., late president of the United States

New-York: [Barlas & Ward] 1802 - Octavo. 506 pp. Suppressed by Aaron Burr. Rare first issue with publisher's name excised. Handsomely bound in green moroccan leather. Gilt ruled, raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Soiling and minor chipping to margins, restoration to title page. Contemporary signature of Bell Mumford on title page. Scattered spotting. Pages 497-506 provided in facsimile. "Most copies bought up and destroyed by (Aaron) Burr." Howes W-632; Sabin 105044. John Wood (ca. 1775 - 1822), political writer, educator, and cartographer, was a Scot who immigrated to New York City in 1800. He soon met Aaron Burr and wrote a series of pamphlets supporting his political positions. One of Wood's efforts was "The History of the Administration of John Adams" (Sowerby, Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson, no. 506). Wood wrote this anti-Federalist and pro-Burr book in an effort to advance those causes, but Burr felt the book was five hundred pages, principally scurrility and illy-told private anecdotes with about thirty pages of high eulogium on A.B and suppressed it for fear that it was libelous towards the Federalists. Burr used John Wood to communicate his intentions with Barlas & Ward and William P. Van Ness to buy every copy of the History and suppress it. Van Ness bought all 1250 copies printed. After the publication of Cheetham's Narrative in May of 1802, Burr's supporters believed the suppression of the volume harmed the vice president's image. As a result, Van Ness sent the copies he had recently purchased to a New York bookseller where some were first sold with the Barlas & Ward imprint excised, as were the copyright holders. A second issue was later printed with a new title page. The controversy continued with the publication at the end of July of Wood's "A Correct Statement of the Various Sources from which The History of the Administration of John Adams" was compiled. Wood defended the suppression of his History of the Administration, noting that Burr and others had found numerous errors in the text. According to Wood, Brockholst Livingston gave a "decided opinion, that it was a libelous publication, and if published would be injurious to the community." (Quote???) Wood charged that the followers of DeWitt Clinton were responsible for the suppression controversy, because they wished to see Clinton replace Burr as the party's candidate for vice president in the next election (Kline, Burr description begins Mary-Jo Kline, ed., Political Correspondence and Public Papers of Aaron Burr, Princeton, 1983, 2 vols. description ends, 2:697 8n, 724 7, 732n. "The secretive, cunning, and untrustworthy Burr, [Cheetham] argued, suppressed THE HISTORY OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF JOHN ADAMS both because he was unfriendly to Jefferson and the current administration and because his own inordinate ambitions required that he not antagonize Federalists whose support he might need in the future" - Sheidley. See Cheetham's A Narrative of the Suppression by Col. Burr, of the History of the Administration of John Adams, , 1802. Surviving first issues have the publisher's imprint excised, as this one is.         Remarks on the Poor Laws, and on the state of the poor

Martin Kensington 1802 - 8vo., (2) + 163 + (1)pp., contemporary half calf over marbled boards, rebacked, spine lettered in gilt. A very good copy with the 19th century armorial bookplate of Thomas Hammond Foxcroft and with Foxcroft's signature> on title page. First edition: rare. Williams II, pp.225. Goldsmiths 18563. Not in Kress or Black. COPAC & OCLC together find copies at 5 libraries in England but only 2 elsewhere (viz. Rutgers + Columbia). 'It forms a singular paradox in human affairs', the author declares, 'that in a country where researches into all human improvement and refinement are industriously and successfully pursued; in which arts, sciences, agriculture, manufactures, and commerce flourish in an endless variety, and to a boundless extent and perfection; where the channels of profitable industry are inexhaustible . so much of poverty and dependance should prevail among the lower classes of society'. Charles Weston of Kensington gives here a lengthy and critical history of the Poor Laws. He advocates centralized administration, real supervision, business-like methods, and the formation of a clearing house for employment. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Oiseaux dores ou a reflets Metalliques.

Paris: Imprimerie Crapelet for Desray, An XI, 1802 - AUDEBERT, Jean Baptiste (1759-1800) and Louis Jean Pierre VIEILLOT (1748-1831). Oiseaux dores ou a reflets Metalliques. Paris: Imprimerie Crapelet for Desray, An XI, 1802 2 volumes. 4to (13 4/8 x 9 6/8 inches). Half-titles with general title of the work, title-pages with volume titles, publisher's forward, list of subscribers and notice to the binder, 190 fine color-printed engraved plates (one folding, 5 double-page), many heightened in gold, by and after Audebert, and printed by Langlois (marginal foxing and staining to text and plates, severest on end leaves and verso of plates, fore-edges of Birds of Paradise plates dampstained). Later green morocco backed, marbled paper boards, gilt (a bit scuffed) Provenance: with the later gift inscription to "Thomas A. Powys on his birthday March 18./60. with the best wishes of his very affecte J.N. & G.C. Fazakerley"; with Charles W. Traylen, his invoice dated 3rd August, 1950, sold to; W.H. Phelps, Esq, Jr.; with Sotheby's 26th June, 1998, lot 554 First edition, limited issue, one of 100 quarto sets printed on papier velin with the captions printed in black, of a total edition of 313, which included 200 folio sets with the plate captions printed in gold, 12 folio sets with the plate captions and the text printed in gold, one set printed in gold on vellum, of "one of the most beautiful books of its era" (Fine Bird Books). Audebert's ambitious color-printing process, first employed in his Histoire naturelle des singes et des makis (1799-1800), is used again with stunning results for Oiseaux dores. Even the gold was applied mechanically to the plumage of the iridescent birds, creating a shimmering effect "like medieval illuminations" (Buchanan). The work was issued in 32 parts over 26 months and is divided into 10 sections. Illustrating the extraordinary beauty of the most spectacular species of hummingbirds, jacamars and birds of paradise. Anker says of the magnificent plates, which are heightened with gold, that the 'colours of the birds and their handsome appearance have evidently been the cause of their selection for inclusion in the book. The plates with the bird portraits are in beautiful colours; in this respect they are among the best colour prints found in ornithology'. The plates were etched by Audebert from his own designs and those of 'les plus belles peintres de Paris et de Londres'; Louis Bouquet assisted with the colouring and Langlois with the printing in oil-colours, and the whole process used in the printing of the plates was invented by Audebert. All the colours were printed from a single plate, and oil paint was substituted for the more common gouache. Originally a miniature painter, Audubert became interested in natural history after meeting Gigot-d'Orex in 1789, a wealthy collector of specimens, who employed him to paint some of them. Tragically Audebert died at the young age of 41, and this is the last book he completed before his death. The text is largely by Vieillot who continued the work using Audebert's notes after the latter's death in 1800. The general title actually appears on the half-titles, each volume treating several genera and having its own title-page: (I) Histoire naturelle et generale des colibris, oiseaux-mouches, jacamars et poromerops; and (II) Histoire naturelle et generale des grimpereaux et des oiseaux de paradis. Audebert died as publication of the text was just beginning. Vieillot was chiefly responsible for the final text, which he based on notes Audebert left behind. TOUSSAINT L'OUVERTURE FRIEDENSITORER ZU DOMINGO

[Germany, 1802. Engraved oval portrait, 2 inches round, on a 5 1/2 x 3 inch sheet with an ornamental border. Light wear. Very good. An interesting image of Haitian leader Toussaint L'Ouverture. This small portrait shows him from the shoulders up. He is standing as if in profile, but looks over his shoulder toward the viewer, giving us essentially a full-face image. He wears a military coat and the look on his face is calm, the portrayal dignified. The caption translates loosely as "Toussaint L'Ouverture disturber of the peace in Domingo." Around the time this portrait was made, Toussaint had added Spanish Santo Domingo to his domains, freed the slaves on that half of the island, and organized a new constitution for St. Domingue which declared himself governor of the island for life. Though he had wide popular support, his government was brief and he was captured by deception during a French invasion led by Le Clerc at Napoleon's direction. He died, a prisoner, in France in 1803. An interesting portrait of the famed Haitian leader, an image which we have not encountered before.

(Hill) First edition ".and account of the voyage commanded by Captains Alcala Galiano and Valdes. Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1802.

Tübingen, in der Cotta'schen Buchhandlung. (Jena, gedruckt bei Frommann und Wesselhöft). 1802. - 12°.

SHIN SEN HIZEN NAGASAKI ZU: NEW MAP OF NAGASAKI, HIZEN PROVINCE.

      - Nagasaki ca.[1802], Kojudo. Blue decorated printed covers, on yellow paper, 2 red Hanko [seals], sheet size: 68.9 x 47 cm., map size: 64.3 x 45.9 cm., very clean solid and crisp copy, color woodblock printed, an excellent example. *** *** *** . . . AN EARLY WOODBLOCK COLOR MAP OF NAGASAKI . . . A "NEWLY CARVED" MAPF NAGASAKI BAY & DESHIMA . . . DUTCH & CHINESE SHIPPING . * THE MAP: This map shows "SHIN SEN" ["NEWLY CARVED WOODBLOCK"] of Nagasaki Bay and environs, with special attention to Deshima & Chinese Islands where the Dutch and Chinese lived isolated and restricted from the mainland. It also shows the details of Nagasaki city, a lively foreign trading port. . The map clearly illustrates the two most important islands of Deshima and the Chinese. Each island had a bridge connecting it to the mainland, which was guarded by Tokugawa Samurai. Foreigners were forbidden by Japanese law from entering the mainland. . Products such as water & food were brought to the islands, as well as a good number of Japanese prostitutes, all sanctioned by the Shogun. . The Dutch Factory manager was granted audience with the Shogun in Edo once a year. This annual event was to pay homage to the Shogun. . The procession was conducted by the Samurai, as the group walked a very long distance to Edo. In Edo the Dutch representative paid his respects to the Shogun who sat behind a screen. The Dutchman was instructed to speak, dance, walk and perform. . There is a stunning and famous primary account of this by Dr. Engelbert Kaempfer published in 1827, please inquire with us as we have a copy in stock. . The harbor shows two large Dutch sailing vessel under full sail, with the Dutch and several other flags flying in the breeze. A large sea-going Chinese junk in full sail, most likely preparing to get under way. There are also two large Japanese junks moored at the shore line. There are numerous other smaller Japanese junk type vessels in the harbor. . At the corners are four Kanji [Chinese characters used by Japanese] noting North, South, East and West. With two cartouches inset at the lower left. The first showing a distant chart from Nagasaki to foreign countries. The second gives the distance from Nagasaki to other port cities in Japan. All distances are cited in Japanese Rim [miles]. At the extreme left of the cartouche is the Japanese colophon. . The map meticulously shows villages, various sights, shrine & temples, the quay, streets, harbors, beaches, rivers, important Japanese trading houses located on the mainland across from near the Dutch & Chinese residences. Other large Japanese trading company are shown, each street and block is named are labeled. . An historically important, a very decorative map. Earlier maps of Nagasaki are always difficult to find. All in all, a very nice clean example of an early 19th century map of the whole area. . In the colophon it states [we translate]: "Nagasaki is beautiful, flourishing city in a 4 km. square, with mountains in the East, South, North, with a good and large port in the West. There are many Dutch & Chinese merchants." . *** WOODBLOCK PRINTING: This work was printed on two large Deluxe size sheets of Washi [hand-made] paper, joined at the center. This map was printed on extraordinary large size cherry wood blocks, all of which was an expensive and extravagant production. The average woodblock print of the time was printed on a standard sheet ca. 23 x 36 cm. . The map was printed in polychrome: pastel shades of blue, yellow, green with black 'key' block outline. . *** DATING: The map is undated. Most reference books [see below] either lack a date or often cite either 1801 or 1802. We believe this one is the Kyowa 2nd year [1802] edition stated in Kurita, Beans & Kohan. The colophon states publisher's name, without date, all examples and variants of this map were printed in Nagasaki by various publishers. . Our research also found this in a 1977 Japanese dealer's catalogs, he speculates the dates at

An account of a voyage to establish a colony at Port Philip in Bass's Strait,

on the South Coast of New South Wales : in His Majesty's Ship Calcutta, in the years 1802-3-4 / by J. H. Tuckey, Esq. First Lieutenant of the Calcutta. London : Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme; and J.C. Mottley, 1805. First edition. Octavo, original polished calf, gilt-decoration, expertly recased with new spine to style by Aquarius, pp xv (including the half-title), [1], 239, [1] publisher's advertisements; a fine copy. Ferguson, 418. The rare contemporary account of the first, unsuccessful attempt to establish a settlement on the shores of Port Phillip. The expedition, under the command of Lieutenant-Governor Collins, comprised a small force of marines in charge of over 300 convicts, and some 15 families of free settlers. A settlement was initially attempted on the western arm of Corio Bay, but due to the hostility of the Aborigines this was quickly abandoned and the colonists moved across the bay to what is now Sorrento. The settlement was a dismal failure due to a combination of reasons, mainly lack of fresh water, desertion of convicts, and poor morale. Remarkably, the expedition did not explore the Yarra River nor the region around it on which the city of Melbourne was to eventually grow. However, the failure of the Port Phillip settlement is of paramount significance for the history of the colonisation of Van Diemen's Land, as Collins' party sailed south from Port Phillip across Bass Strait, eventually choosing the site of Hobart Town as the second place of European settlement in Tasmania (after Risdon Cove), in February 1804.

SHIN SEN HIZEN NAGASAKI ZU: NEW MAP OF NAGASAKI, HIZEN PROVINCE.

Nagasaki ca.[1802], Kojudo. The colophon states publisher's name, without date, all examples and variants of this map were printed in Nagasaki by various publishers. . Our research also found this in a 1977 Japanese dealer's catalogs, he speculates the dates at circa: Ansei [1854-1860] to Bunkyu [1861-1863]. This may be true for a later reprint of the map. There were other reprints, all of which lack a date. It is down to an educated guess. We can not find the exact map covers cited or illustrated in any reference, only very similar ones, with differing cover design and variations in the colophon. . *** RARITY: An historically important and decorative map. Earlier maps of Nagasaki are always scarce. . *** THE FRONT COVER: On the left side of the front cover there are five Kanji [Japanese Characters] reading: "KO JU DOH HATSU DA" "PUBLISHED BY KO JU DO" with their red Hanko [seal or chop]. . *** CONDITION: The map is in its original blue-printed yellow paper covers. The front has two red Hanko [seals or chops]. The back cover is blank. The front cover is very clean, there is a tiny bit of the usual minimal scuffing to the extremities with a bit more at the top margin. The back cover is clean with a minor bit of 'toning' where it is attached to the map. . The map is fresh and crisp. The folds are very strong with out issues. The registry is excellent, the colors strong and vivid, there is no fading. We not four very tiny pin-holes at each corner. These were professionally restored in the distant past, The map is clean and solid. All in all an excellent example of a RARE map, in collector's condition. . The map has seven vertical folds and three horizontal. It folds down to 9 x 15 cm. . *** REFERENCES: . The map is identical, the only difference is the colophon which shows an earlier imprint and different publisher's name. He reads the title in a variant of HIZEN as HISHU. He also illustrates an other similar map as plate 36, SHINKAN NAGASAKI NO ZU, again the colophon differs from our example. * BEANS, George H.: A LIST OF JAPANESE MAPS OF THE TOKUGAWA ERA, a 4 volume set. Japanese Title: NIHON KO CHIZU TAISEI: GREAT COLLECTION OF ANCIENT JAPANESE MAPS, pp. 218-219, number 109 is a very similar map of HISHU NAGASAKI ZU, 1778, more than likely the first example from which many others used as a primary resource. The similarities are exceptionally similar. * * Not in: KERLEN, H.: CATALOGUE OF PRE-MEIJI JAPANESE BOOKS & MAPS IN PUBLIC COLLECTIONS IN THE NETHERLANDS. * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagasaki . *** NOTE: Please visit our website, we have some of the above reference books in stock. . *** .

Two parts in one volume, vi, [2], 1-212, 26, iv, 213-535 [1], [8] pp., part titles, index bound at end and 17 engraved plates. 4to (277 x 216 mm). Provenance: illegible ink stamp to title verso and first free endpaper. ----Article Part 1: Dibner 152; PMM 259; Norman 2275. Article Part 2: Norman 2276 - FIRST EDITION. Part 1 is 'an epoch-making contribution to the theory of light in all its phases'. Read as the Bakerian lecture, November 12, 1801, Young firmly endorsed Huygen's wave theory of light, displacing Newton's corpuscular theory which had been favoured for most of the 18th century, and so found explanations for unresolved optical phenomena such as interference. Part 2 is a further explanation of the wave theory. Also in this volume: WOLLASTON, William Hyde. A Method of examining refractive and dispersive Powers, by prismatic Reflection. In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 92, Part I, 1802, 4to. pp. 365-380 - Sparrow, Milestones of Science 198. - The third major scientific discovery announced in this volume of the Transactions is Wollaston's discovery of black lines crossing the colored band of the solar spectrum. 'The science of astrophysics began' with Wollaston's report of this phenomenon to the Royal Society (Singer, Short History of Scientific Ideas to 1900). Wollaston's examination of the solar spectrum, here described, revealed for the first time the numerous black lines afterwards connected with the name of Fraunhofer; and his paper is one of the most significant 'incunabula' of the discovery of spectrum analysis. Twelve years later the appearance of these dark lines (called 'Fraunhofer lines') was confirmed by the maker of Wollaston's original spectroscope. - Visit our website for additional images and information. Very Good.
