(fine decorative engraved title by Böhm after Kininger, depicting the four seasons as allegorical figures), [i] (part title to Part I, in German and English), [i] ("Personen," in German and English), 251 (Part I: spring and summer), [i] (blank), [i] (part title to Part II, in German and English, with misspelling "Jahrszeiten"), 252-485 (Part II: autumn and winter), 486-496 (score of three trombone parts for Part I and II) pp. Typeset. The trombone parts are omitted from the main text. Early owner's signature, "G.F. Graham," to first pages of Part I and II. Early performance markings (musical numbering and metronome markings) in blue pencil to pp. 1, 28, 38, and 54. Slightly browned and foxed; title slightly dampstained at upper outer margins with small tear to blank lower margin repaired. An attractive copy overall. . First Edition (issue with text in both German and English). Hoboken XXI:3, pp. 58-59. Hoboken collection catalogue 9, 1411 (with watermarks). Hirsch IV, 795 (second copy; see note, ibid.). RISM H2542. This second collaboration between Haydn and the librettist Gottfried von Swieten was based on the poem by James Thomson (1700-1748) published in 1730. The work was first performed on April 24, 1801 in a private première at the Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna; the first public production took place on May 19, 1801. "Although the initial reception of The Seasons was favourable ?- Haydn wrote to Clementi that it had enjoyed ?'unanimous approval?' and that ?'many prefer it to The Creation, because of its greater variety?' ?- critical opinion soon became mixed, owing in part to its perceived ?'lower?' subject, in part to a growing aesthetic resistance to its many pictorialisms. Haydn himself contributed to both strands of criticism: he supposedly said to Francis II, ?'In The Creation angels speak and tell of God, but in The Seasons only Simon speaks?' (Dies); and he indiscreetly criticized Swieten?'s croaking frogs (?'Frenchified trash?') and the absurdity of a choral hymn to toil (Fleiss). Nonetheless he maintained that it would join The Creation in assuring his lasting fame. For the publication he took the path of lesser resistance, selling the rights to Breitkopf & Härtel." James Webster and Georg Feder in Grove Music Online. Early owner "G.F. Graham" may be George Farquhar Graham (1789-1867), a Scottish musicologist and composer who contributed the article "Music" to the seventh edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

        Marília de Dirceo. Por T.A.G.

Lisbon, Na Officina Nunesiana, 1802 (volumes I and II); Na Offic. de Joaquim Thomas de Aquino Bulhoens, 1800 (volume III). - 3 volumes in 1. 8°, contemporary sheep (some wear, especially at front outer joint, but sound), spines with raised bands in five compartments, gilt fillets, crimson leather lettering piece in second compartment from head, gilt short-title. Identical small typographical vignettes on title pages of volumes I and II. Small woodcut vignette on title page of volume III. Worm traces at beginning of volume I: about 2.6 cm. at lower outer margin of first 5 leaves, touching final letter of imprint on title page, a letter of text on p. [3] recto, and with loss of two words on p. 8; another trace of about the same length at lower inner margin of first 5 leaves, never affecting text, and continuing on as a round hole in the blank margins of another 11 leaves, again not affecting any text. Volume I in slightly less than good condition. Volumes II and III in good to very good condition. Two-line contemporary ink manuscript inscription, scored, on verso of title page of volume I, with five-line ink manuscript inscription below: Este livro he de // Jose Vieira // Maio 15 de 1825 // Funchal // Ilha de Madeira". Later scored ink manuscript inscription in upper blank margin of p. [3] of volume I: "De Maria Helena Correa". Ink manuscript signature of Josi[??} Vieira on rear free endleaf verso. 110 pp., (1 blank l.); 108 pp., (2 blank ll.); 110 pp., (1 blank l.). *** FIRST EDITION of part III.Second edition, "mais acresentada" of part II.Third edition of part I. While the editions of the first and second parts present in this collection are by no means easy to obtain, @the original edition of part III is very rare; more or less in the same realm of rarity as the rare first and second editions of part I (1792 and 1799, respectively), or the rare first edition of part 2 (1799). The extreme rarity of this work has caused significant bibliographic confusion about editions and contents. The 1792 first edition of part I was unknown to many bibliographers (e.g., Innocêncio, Varnhagen, etc.), and its existence was not revealed until 1879, in an article by Valle Cabral that appeared in the @Revista Brasileira I, 411. The two parts of the 1799 edition were not known until 1923, when their existence was announced in an article by Alberto de Oliveira in the @Revista da língua portuguêsa nº26, 81-5. The third part, of doubtful authenticity appeared in Lisbon, 1800. Since beginning in business in 1969, we have handled 3 copies of the extremely rare first edition of part I, and we have also three times seen on the market and handled copies of the 1799 edition. Regarding the present first edition of the third part, we have also only seen three copies on the market since 1969. There is confusion regarding the collation of the first edition of the third part, no doubt due to the rarity. Rodrigues says that it contains 3 preliminary leaves, followed by 110 pages. Borba de Moraes says there are VII pp., with the half title, title page, and "Prologo", with p. [viii] blank, followed by 110 pp. In reality, the blank p. [viii] is followed p. [9], which is the beginning of the main text. The catchwords, signatures, and logic of the text support the conclusion that our copy is complete except for the half title; it does include the final integral blank leaf."If the 'Escola Mineira' had done nothing else, it could still be said that in Tomás António Gonzaga it had produced the most popular love poet who has written in Portuguese. Gonzaga's @Marília de Dirceu is second only to @The Lusiads of Camões in the number of editions it has had. . . . down to the 1920's there had been a total of thirty-four" (Putnam, @Marvelous Journey, p. 87). The word "popular," when applied to the poetry of Gonzaga, should by no means be taken in any derogatory sense. Putnam continues, "There is no doubt that Tomás António Gonzaga is one of the fine love poets of the world. He is of the lineage of Petrarch; and if one had no other reason for learning Portuguese, the desire to read his poems would [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Field described the work as "very scarce" in 1875, and Owen dubs it "exceedingly rare." Includes detailed accounts of the battles and travels, with much on the collusion between the British and the Indians, Spanish intrigues, etc. "[T]he MEMOIRS is one of the most fascinating and harrowing narratives of the early nineteenth century. Phelps and his family were members of a party led by Phineas Lyman to settle on the Yazoo River" - Graff. HOWES H300, "b." GRAFF 1816. STREETER SALE 1528 (this copy). CLARK I:287. SABIN 30829.       Paris, 1802. Half title. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, gilt. Spine ends and corners worn. Edges and portions of the marbled boards chewed or abraded. 19th-century bookplate on front pastedown, modern bookplate on rear pastedown. Small burn hole on titlepage, minor foxing, some marginal dampstaining. Good. A remarkable account of a Frenchman's travels and adventures among the Creek Indians in the Mississippi Valley in the late 1770s and early 1780s. Some of the details in this narrative are sufficiently extraordinary that various commentators have questioned Milfort's veracity. "There are, however, corroborative circumstances which confirm his statements, and induce us to give a fair degree of credence to his narrative. At the time of his arrival among the Creeks, a half-breed named McGillivray, had obtained so great an influence over them by his talent for organization, that he had actually acquired the rank of head chief. Milfort was received with great cordiality; married his Indian sister, and in a short time was made commander of the warriors of the nation. He led them against both the Spaniards and the Americans, and by his aid the Indians defeated the forces of each in several skirmishes" - Field. "The truth is that Milfort was a hopeless liar; and as a result his book is one of the most interesting and curious books of French travel in America in the eighteenth century....His book is often hostile to the colonists. Certain descriptions of life among the Indians and frontiersmen are interesting. But what confidence can be placed in a man who was capable of describing how he, in command of six thousand Indians, had defeated George Rogers Clark and an army of ten thousand regulars!" - Monaghan. "It would take more time than I have so far been able to give to guess whether or not it is fiction" - Streeter. This book is dedicated to Napoleon; Milfort signs himself in print on the titlepage: "Tastanégy ou grand Chef de guerre de la nation Crëck." The Siebert copy in 1999 was the first to have appeared at auction since the Streeter sale in 1967.

Karl Heinrich MÖLLER (1802 Berlin 1882) Studienblatt, Signatur Schadow & Berger

New York, 1802. Portrait in first volume. Contemporary calf, spines gilt, leather labels. First volume expertly rebacked with original backstrip laid down, gilt leather label; second volume with modern calf backstrip in matching style, gilt leather label. Boards a bit shelfworn. Early ownership signature on verso of frontispiece in first volume; institutional ink stamp on titlepage of second volume and a handful of text leaves. Text tanned, some foxing. Good. A scarce work, and one of the most valuable firsthand narratives of the American Revolution in the South. At the outbreak of the Revolution, Moultrie was a politician and an officer in the South Carolina colonial regiment (where he had risen to prominence during the Cherokee War). He was eventually promoted to the position of brigadier-general in the Continental Army. Moultrie fought in several important southern battles, including the defense of Fort Sullivan in 1776, and helped lead the defense of Charleston from the British before his forces were finally overcome in 1780. He was taken prisoner and held for more than a year, after which the British tried to bring him to their side by offering him a command in Jamaica. "Of great value for the history of the Revolution in South Carolina and Georgia" - DAB. "The author's position as Governor of South Carolina, afforded him ample facilities to consult original authorities, and the result of his researches is a good book" - Sabin. "One of the most interesting of the Revolutionary narratives" - Larned.

        History of the British Expedition to Egypt;

London: T. Egerton,, 1802. to which is subjoined, a Sketch of the Present State of that Country and its Means of Defence. Quarto (287 x 221 mm). Contemporary red straight-grain morocco, gilt-banded spine, gilt roll tool border on sides enclosing single-line gilt panel with corner rosettes, gilt roll tool turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Stipple-engraved portrait frontispiece of Sir Ralph Abercromby by Meyer after Hoppner, handcoloured folding map of the western branch of the Nile (Cairo to Rosetta), map of the battle of Alexandria (units handcoloured), handcoloured map of the skirmish near Rahmanie, 2 folding letterpress tables. Old dampstain to frontispiece and title page (causing discolouration), occasional thumbing, closed-tear in margin of Alexandria map. First edition, a very good wide-margined copy in a lovely period binding. A popular first-hand account of the British expedition to wrest Egypt from French control, written by Sir Robert Thomas Wilson (1777-1849), who served under the expedition's leader, Sir Ralph Abercromby. An interesting association copy, with the contemporary ownership inscription on a preliminary blank of "G. Bosville"; this would appear to be Lieutenant-General Godfrey Bosville Macdonald, 3rd Baron Macdonald of Slate (1775-1832), who legally changed his name to Godfrey Bosville (1814) and then to Godfrey Bosville Macdonald (1824). He served in the Low Countries, West Indies, Cape of Good Hope and the Peninsular, where Wilson also served but, it would appear, not at the same time. Bosville's brother, Thomas, married Wilson's sister Fanny in 1793: "My sister Fanny had in the year 1793 married Colonel Bosville of the Coldstream Guards, brother of Mr. Bosville of Thorpe Hall and of Lady Macdonald... Obliged a week after he had married my sister to embark with his regiment for Holland, he was soon afterwards killed in the action of Lincelles [17 August 1793 in the Flanders Campaign of the War of the First Coalition], where the Guards acquired great credit. No officer in the corps was more esteemed; and though 6 feet 4 inches in height, he was, from his corresponding symmetry of form, considered one of the handsomest men in Europe [a footnote mentions that:] his height occasioned his death, for a musket-ball struck him in the head" (Life of General Sir Robert Wilson... from Autobiographical Memoirs, London 1862, p. 53). "[Wilson] landed at Abu Qir Bay on 7 March 1801, and took part in the action of the 13th and in the battle of Alexandria on the 21st. Upon Abercromby's death Major-General (later Lord) Hutchinson succeeded him and employed Wilson on several missions. In July Wilson entered Cairo with Hutchinson, and was at the siege of Alexandria in August and its capitulation on the 25th. He left Egypt on 11 September and returned to England via Malta and Toulon, arriving at the end of December. For his services in Egypt he was made a knight of the order of the Crescent of Turkey. In 1802 Wilson published The History of the British Expedition to Egypt, which went through several editions. The work derived especial popularity from its charges of cruelty against Napoleon, towards both his prisoners at Jaffa and his own soldiers at Cairo. Napoleon complained to the British government and, receiving no satisfaction, ordered Colonel Sebastiani to issue a counter-report" (ODNB).

Travels through the Southern Provinces of the Russian Empire, in the Years 1793 and 1794, in 2 volumes, complete.

London: printed by A. Strahan for Longman and Rees, 1802-1803. First edition.. Occasional marginal spotting or foxing to some text pages, two of the folding maps at the rear show stronger marginal foxing, the fine hand-colored and plain plates are quite bright and clean; the original calf on the front and rear covers shows some rubbing and shading; overall, a tight copy in very good condition.. Pp. xxiii, (1, errata) 552; xxx, (1, errata), 523; with 51 engraved and aquatint plates (most of which are hand-colored), 4 folding engraved maps, 28 hand-colored aquatint vignettes. Contemporary speckled calf-leather, rebacked preserving original spines with red and black gilt-lettered labels, 4to (275 x 217 mm). This is the first edition in English. It was translated from the original German entitled "Reise durch verschiedene Provinzen des Russischen Reichs in einem ausfuhrlichen Auszuge" published in 1778. There is a scientific flair to Pallas' accounts as the author was trained as a botanist and zoologist. This well-illustrated work documents the author's "travels from St. Petersburg eastwards, along the Volga, to Astrakhan, the Caspian Sea, thence to the Caucasus Mountains, the Crimea, and back to St. Petersburg. Pallas covers the ethnology, costumes, flora, fauna, geology, topography and commerce of the southern provinces of Russia" (Abbey Travel 222). Cox, (volume 1, p. 199) observes that "Pallas left St. Petersburg in 1768 and spent six full years investigating various districts of Siberia such as the Urals, the Caspian, Tobolsk, Lake Baikal and the lower Volga. His reports on the geology, flora, fauna and indigenous inhabitants are of great scientific value." Finally, Tooley (357, p.289-291) called the work "an extremely charming colour plate book ... It deserves a place in every colour plate collection for its numerous attractive coloured vignettes, an unusual feature." Armorial bookplate of Margaret D. Stephens. Inscribed to "Joe Frank Payne, M.D." from P.H.P.T.  in memory of their safe trip to Russia in May 1879.  Joseph Frank Payne was a physician and medical historian who was sent to Russia in 1879 by the British government to investigate an epidemic of bubonic plague.  Name stamp of former owner in Chinese on the title page of both volumes.

Paris, 1802. Original blue printed paper wrappers. A few chips to spine. Minor soiling. Light dampstaining to inner upper corner of each plate. Very good. Untrimmed. In a half morocco and cloth clamshell case. Thomas Jefferson's article on the design of his moldboard plow, one of his most important and enduring contributions to agricultural technology. First published in 1799 in the TRANSACTIONS of the American Philosophical Society, the article was reprinted in this French publication in 1802. The accompanying plate shows the illustration of figures for constructing the plow. Jefferson, who had an abiding interest in the technological improvement of farming and agriculture, determined to build a plow that would glide through the earth with as little resistance as possible. He built his first moldboard plow in 1794, and after several years of use, was convinced of its ease of use and construction, resulting in this article. Its publication here, during his presidency, illustrates Jefferson's ongoing ties to France stemming from his service as U.S. ambassador.

In my experience Lands Grants from this period with the sealintact are very scarce. In addition, these documents prior to 1810, arevery rare. I only remember seeing any of these once previously; aboutthirty five years ago in the offices of Joseph Patrick Books, Toronto. The area in the Bay of Quinte was settled in the early spring of 1794 bydisbanded soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, Rogers' Corps. The granteemarried the daughter of one of the officers, Ensign David Fraser. JoshuaBooth (1759-1813), a miller, was one of first elected members of theUpper Canadian Parliament assembled in Newark in 1792 and served as aCaptain in the Hastings Militia. "Died at Ernestown, on Saturday, Oct.31, 1813, suddenly, Joshua Booth, Esq., aged 54 years. He was one of theoldest settlers in that place, and ever retained the character of arespectable citizen. Left a widow and ten children." [Canniff: Settlementof Upper Canada, 1869]. The deed has been endorsed and signed by theLieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, Peter Hunter, who held the positionfrom 1799 to 1805. His military responsibilities as commander-in-chiefof the forces in Canada necessitated his often absence from York andgovernment was left in the hands of executive councillors (believed tobe the origination of the "Family Compact"). .

London, 1802. Half title. Quarto. Original paper-covered boards, rebacked with original paper backstrip laid down. A small stain at the very bottom edge of a few leaves and plates, but overall very clean and fresh internally. A very handsome copy, in original condition, untrimmed. In a cloth chemise and half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. "My object has been to travel with my eyes open, and to relate what I have seen in the simple language of truth" - Martin Sauer in the preface (p. xiv). Sauer, an Englishman who served on the expedition as "private secretary and translator," here provides a largely firsthand account of the expedition under Joseph Billings undertaken between 1785 and 1794 to map and describe the farthest eastern reaches of the Russian empire, from Kamchatka in the southwest, eastwards through the Aleutians, then north to the Bering Strait and the coast of Alaska. The work includes a detailed description of the voyage, of the natives encountered and their customs, including (in the appendix) vocabularies of the Yukagir, Yakut, Tungoose, Kamchatka, Aleutian, and Kodiak languages. "This is the first account in English of the first major exploring expedition sent out by the Russians to the Frozen Ocean and the north Pacific after Bering's second expedition of 1741" - Streeter. The fine large chart was made by Aaron Arrowsmith from Sauer's notes and Captain Billings' astronomical observations and offers the most accurate map to date of the region. This map is ably complemented by William Alexander's spectacular plates showing the peoples, settlements, and topography of the region.

Paris: Théophile Barrois père, 1802. one table a little frayed;. Octavo, 12 hand-coloured plates and 2 folding tables, an excellent copy in contemporary quarter calf, gilt. First edition: the rare hand-coloured edition with, among much of Pacific interest, two Australian "Bull Dog" ants figured for the first time on the handsome engraved plates.Pierre André Latreille (1762-1833) had entered the Paris Museum in 1799, and became Professor of Entomology on the death of Lamarck. He went on to publish a great number of important entomological books and articles, including several relating to other French voyages to the Pacific, and contributing the volume on insects to Cuvier's revolutionary Règne Animal of 1817. A memoir of Latreille, with a portrait, was published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library for 1841.The present work is mainly, although not exclusively, a study of ants, with minor sections on bees and arachnids. Not only is Latreille's monograph one of the most significant early works on the species, but is of great significance because Formica gulosa and Formica forficata, both Australian species, are actually figured for the first time: after Roemer's Genera Insectorum, this is only the second work to include illustrations of Australian insects. Both of the specimens are included on plate VIII (pictured here). For insects collected on the d'Entrecasteaux voyage, Latreille's work is preceded only by Fabricius's Systema Eleutheatorum (previous item), and there were two later Fabricius titles of 1803 and 1804 which also included significant notices relating to this important Pacific voyage. The only other contemporary notice of insects from the d'Entrecasteaux was a notice by Lamarck in the journal of the Annales du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle for 1804.

Tinted miniature profile engraving of Col. William Duane, 2 5/8 x 2 1/2 inches [plate mark] on a larger sheet (6 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches)

Miles Saint-Memin and the Neoclassical Profile Portrait in America 277: "Although the engraving was made in 1802, the version with the inscription 'Col. William Duane' must date after 1808, when Duane became a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army; he also held the rank of colonel from 1813 to 1815. Duane helped Benjamin Franklin Bache publish the Philadelphia Aurora, the principal voice of the Jeffersonian Republicans. His paper was responsible for stemming the tide of war against france in the late 1790s and contributed greatly to Thomas Jefferson's election in 1800."       London, 1802. Top margin slightly ragged, with slight paper loss not affecting image, else a handsome copy with contemporary color. This view is one of a series of four views executed by the British artist, Alexander Robertson, during his visit to the United States in 1798, engraved in London by Francis Jukes. The other views show the Hudson, New York, and Mount Vernon. Deák notes that Passaic Falls was "one of the major natural wonders in America that beckoned early artists" and praises the view, which shows a lone fisherman in the foreground, dwarfed by the vertical walls of stone next to the falls, with the rushing torrent in the background. One of the earliest New Jersey views.

The Federalist, On the New Constitution, Second Edition

1802. The Last Edition Published in Hamilton's Lifetime, And the First Edition to Identify the Authors [Hamilton, Alexander (1755 or 57-1804)], [Madison, James (1751-1836)]. [Jay, John Jay (1745-1829)]. The Federalist, On the New Constitution. By Publius. Written in 1788. To Which is Added, Pacificus, On the Proclamation of Neutrality. Written in 1793. Likewise, The Federal Constitution, With All the Amendments. Revised and Corrected. New York: George F. Hopkins, 1802. Two volumes. viii, 317, [1]; v, [3], 351 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5"). Contemporary tree sheep, gilt rules to boards, expertly rebacked retaining original spine with gilt fillets, ornaments and lettering pieces, hinges, corners and a few scuffs carefully mended. Light rubbing and a few minor nicks to boards. Moderate toning to text, light foxing and faint dampstaining to margins in a few places. Early owner signatures to front free endpapers and title pages, interiors otherwise clean. A handsome copy of scarce edition of a fundamental work. $12,500. * Second edition, "Revised and Corrected." For more than two centuries, this landmark work has influenced our understanding of the U.S. Constitution and the government and nature of the United States. Written to encourage ratification of the proposed constitution by New York State, it was seen almost immediately as the most compelling commentary on the most radical form of government the world had seen. Most of the essays that comprise this work appeared originally under the collective pseudonym "Publius" in New York newspapers and journals from October 27, 1787 to early June 1788. (Most scholars agree that 51 of the essays were written by Hamilton, 29 Madison and 5 by Jay.) The first edition was published by the M'Lean brothers as a two-volume work in March and May 1788. The second edition is significant because its preface establishes Hamilton, Madison and Jay as the authors and discusses the extent of their contributions. Published fourteen years after the U.S. Constitution's ratification and two years before Hamilton's death, it also includes the text of the U.S. Constitution with the first eleven amendments and Hamilton's "Pacificus" essays, which defended Washington's 1793 proclamation of neutrality during the Anglo-French War.         A Treatise on Obligations, Considered in a Moral and Legal View

Translated from the French of Pothier [by François Xavier Martin.] Newbern, N.C.: Martin & Ogden, 1802. 1st edition in English. (Shaw and Shoemaker, Early American Imprints, 2917; J.G. Marvin, Legal Bibliography, 548.) Two volumes in one. Original leather binding. xii, 364 pp.; and x, 315, (1) pp. Lacking 8 early leaves, but priced accordingly. Evidently a binding error, with no sign the leaves were ever bound in. They comprise 16 numbered pages, from 17 to 32. Old ink notation on p. 16 noting the flaw. (The missing leaves are supplied in facsimile in a separate marbled folder.) This rare edition was the earliest translation of Traité des Obligations (Paris, 1761) by the great French jurist and scholar Robert Joseph Pothier, 1699-1772. An important influence on American and British contract law and an essential legal text of the 19th century. "It is the most perfect book of law that ever issued from the hand of man; and not only a good book of law, but an excellent book on morals; a work of all countries, of all nations," in the estimation of Pothier's biographer, André Dupin. François Xavier Martin, 1762-1846, a native of France and an attorney, was both the translator and printer. Martin emigrated to North Carolina during the American Revolution, established a printing business, studied law, and later became known as the father of Louisiana jurisprudence. His 1802 translation of A Treatise on Obligations in America preceded by four years an edition published in England. That translation by William David Evans (London, 1806) was "not always to be relied upon" due to Evans' imperfect knowledge of French law. (Marvin bibliography.) Good antiquarian condition. 8vo, approx. 8.25 by 5.25 inches. Two volumes bound together as one. Separate title pages and pagination; 8 leaves (i.e., 16 numbered pages) lacking in the first volume, as noted above. Table of contents and errata page in each volume. Full sheep leather binding of the period. General wear, rubbing and scuffing. Front outer joint cracked, rear joint cracked at the extremities but both covers still well-attached. Inner hinges sound. Spine label lacking, but "Pothier on Obligations" lettering still visible. Text block firm and tight. Text generally clean, with typical age-toning and only occasional foxing, staining. Brief pencil notes at the bottom of the first text page. Intermittent ink notations, mainly old hand-corrections from the errata pages. Two excisions from the first title page (on either side of "on" in the title), probably to remove the signature of the original owner. $4.00 price in ink is written beside. The same price is in pencil on the front pastedown. (***$4 was the original price in 1802, according to Martin's bibliographer, Edward Larocque Tinker.) Another faint, early signature is on the front pastedown (possibly the surname Calkin or Calkins.) More recently owned by J.T. [James Teller] Schoolcraft, 1855-1937, an attorney, prosecutor, and former mayor of Schenectady, NY. A loose sheet signed by Schoolcraft is laid into the front of the book. A solid example overall of the landmark Newbern (aka New Bern) edition of 1802. An important American translation that introduced Pothier's work on contracts to an English speaking audience for the first time. A desirable example in the original binding, despite the omission of 8 of the 351 leaves. A truly rare book that is seldom offered for sale. .

A treatise on the culture and management of fruit trees; in which a new method of pruning and training is fully described

London: printed by Nicols and Son for T.N. Longman [et al.]. 1802. "First edition, 4to, pp. viii, 371, [1], plus 6pp. ads, 13 folding engraved plates; original blue paper-covered boards neatly rebacked, extremities a bit rubbed with repair to one corner of the front board, otherwise a very good copy. Forsyth (1737-1804), for whom the forsythia was named, was superintendent of the Royal Gardens at St. James and Kensington. One of the most useful and original sections of the work is Forsyth's discussion of the diseases of fruit and forest trees, and methods for prevention and cure. The success of the work was immediate, and it reached seven editions by 1824."

La Republique Batave divisèe En Ses Departemens Par Lamarche Venise 1802.':.

      - Altkolorierter Kupferstich n. Delamarche b. - Oben rechts in Manuskript "N. XVII." - Die Karte zeigt die Batavische Republik (Bataafse Republiek) mit den Departements du Frise, Groningue, Over-Issel, Zutfen, Gueldre Utrecht u. Ollande propre. - Oben links altkolorierte Kartusche. - Extrem seltener Einblattdruck! This very rare map belongs to a never finished project for the atlas of the so called Società Calcografia, a simple commercial trade realized by the two main Venetian publishers of the XVIII century, Antonio Zatta and Giuseppe Antonio Remondini. The term Società Calcografica has been deduced from the map of the world, which is part of the collection and bears in the lower cartouche the French writing "à Venise Chez la Societè Chalcographique". As already stated, the project was never finished for no atlas. Very likely, then, the maps have been sold individually, or maybe as part of smaller, custom collections. The maps of the collection derive from Paolo and Francesco Santini’s plates, used by Remondini in his 1782/4 "Atlas Universelle" and from the plates of Antonio Zatta’s "Nuovo Atlante" published in 1796. Santini’s maps have been beautifully enriched, using the system of small, masked plates which can be perceived through the platemarks on the paper, with great cartouches according to the classical style of Zatta and have been probably engraved by the members of his staff, Pasquali, Zuliani and Pitteri. The cartouches bear very often historical descriptions and maybe the maps have been realized to depict the great geographic changes of the peninsula during the Napoleonic period. In our opinion, the two publishers worked together to the realization of the project until Antonio Zatta died (1804), and the complete atlas was never finished because Giuseppe Antonio Remondini also died in 1811.
