[Click Below for Full Description]

Lampadius, W(ilhelm) A(ugust):
Freiberg, Craz, 1801 - VIII, 362 S., 1 Bl. (Berichtigungen). 1 gefalt. Kupfertafel. Erste Ausgabe, selten. - "Rare. Gives details of the equipment necessary for the analysis of minerals, as well as instructions for their use. It also describes various analytical methods, giving a list of reagents. The analysis of individual minerals is then described. Lampadius` methods are generally as good as Klaproth`s, and there are portions of the book that foreshadow textbooks of a later period. For example, it contains a detailed list of equipment and apparatus required for analysis, as well as instructions for their use. In the introduction a long passage describes the preparation of the necessary reagents, and methods for testing their purity. Szabadváry (1966) says these `descriptions are the earliest record of standard methods used for testing the purity of analytical grade reagents and in many cases are very similar to present day methods`" (Minrec). - Unbeschnitten. Arrowsmith, Aaron
London, A. Arrowsmith No. 24 Rathbone Place, 1801. Engraved map, fine original hand-colour, edged with blue silk, housed in original marbled paper chemise and slipcase, with red morocco label, lettered in gilt. 1470 x 1290 mm. The most accurate map of Asia published at the beginning of the 19th century. It shows significant advancement compared with other maps of the period, incorporating the work of surveyors like James Rennell, to whom the map was dedicated. Rennell was surveyor-general of the East India Company's dominions in Bengal, and the information published in his "Bengal Atlas" in 1779 appears here. Arrowsmith also included remarkable topographical detail such as mountain ranges in regions as remote as Tibet. Remarkably the region on the shore of the Arabian Gulf is already labelled as "Bani Yas" territory. Arrowsmith has marked the track of Lapérouse's voyage in the Indian Ocean and Far East. - Aaron Arrowsmith (1750-1823) was the finest cartographer of his generation. Although he received little formal education, it is believed that he was provided with some mathematical instruction by William Emerson, an author of several books on the application of mathematics to the area of cartography. Around 1770, Arrowsmith moved to London to seek employment. It is believed that he worked for William Faden before joining John Cary Sr. in the early 1780s. There he provided the measurements for John Cary's early publication detailing the roads from London to Falmouth, his first signed work. Arrowsmith set up on his own in 1790 and over the next thirty years produced some o … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAUY, Rene Just
Chez Louis, 1801. Complete with all errata and half titles present. Woodcut printer's device on each title. Text volumes bound in contemporary quarter calf and marbled boards, with vellum corners, gilt spine with morocco labels, hinges slightly tender with the exception of volume 2 which has been rebacked; interiors exceptionally clean, some pages unopened. Approbation leaf in volume 1 signed "Louie" in a contemporary hand. The atlas is bound in original thick paper boards, faded, with minor but expertly administered repairs; untrimmed, very occasional light foxing, otherwise an extremely well preserved and clean copy. From the library of Arnold Thackray with his bookplate in each volume. Tucked into one of the volumes is a letter intended for a "Monsieur Cloez," written on the letterhead of the École Imperiale Polytechnique and dated 1859. The recipient was probably the French chemist François Stanislas Cloez (1817-1883), founder of the Chemical Society of France and an important player in the development of analytical chemistry in the nineteenth century. The inclusion of this letter may indicate the set's provenance, though there are no other markings to substantiate it. First edition of the author's first major work, "the author's most important work, containing his discovery of the geometrical law of crystallisation, known by his name, and of piezo-electriciy" (Zeitlinger). The first volume of text presents Haüy's crystal theory, followed by its application on mineral classification in the ensuing three volumes. "The basic idea of his theory is that the primitive form o … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Fore-edge Painting] FORDYCE, James (1720-1796).
London:: Printed for T. Cadell, Jun. and W. Davies, by G.R. Clarke, 1801., 1801. Small 8vo. xx, [ii], 232 pp. Original full dark navy blue straight-grained morocco, gilt Greek-key tooling surround, five raised bands, elaborate gilt compartments, all edges gilt. Very good +. With a fine fore-edge painting under the gilt showing "Christchurch in Hampshire (here James Fordyce lived)." With an early typed note relating to the painting. The artist possibly copied the engraving "Christchurch, Hampshire" from the print by E. Finden after a picture by W. Westall, published in Great Britain Illustrated, 1830. This view shows the single row boat in the foreground similar to the image with this fore-edge painting. Artist unknown; painted ca. 1900-1955. This scene is delicately and skillfully painted. "Fordyce's delivery and gestures were studied, and he drew crowds to Monkwell Street. His topics were didactic, but he also satisfied cultured tastes, and dealt with the ethics of actual life. David Garrick was impressed; Fordyce associated with Samuel Johnson, and introduced him to Blair. He gave sympathetic account in Addresses to the Deity, 1785, of Johnson's religious character, speaking as an evangelical moderate." [DNB].
