[LANDON, Charles Paul, editor & author]
120 pp. 8vo, cont. half-calf & marbled boards (spine slightly rubbed), red morocco lettering piece on spine, gilt cipher of Eugène de Beauharnais on covers. Paris: Didot Jeune, An IX [1801]. First edition of this rare Salon commentary. Landon (1760-1826), prominent art critic, historian, and popularizer of contemporary art, wielded great influence over the French art world in the early 19th century. He served as curator of paintings at the Louvre and was the personal painter to Charles Ferdinand, duc de Berry. Three of Landon's paintings were exhibited at various Salons, including the present one. Landon also wrote and edited more than 100 works, including important histories of art, biographies of artists, and numerous catalogues and inventories of collections such as that of the Palais du Luxembourg. In this work, Landon presents the commentaries of anonymous critics, as well as his own, on that year's Salon. They describe a wide range of artworks, occasionally expressing acerbic opinions on the items displayed ("I will not comment on the attempts of these two young artists…to make clear the abuse of derived principles, in a good school, but poorly felt and falsely applied, and the danger of exhibiting in public the first fruits of a talent which is not yet refined"-page 20). The critics remark on works by artists and architects such as Alexandre-Évariste Fragonard, François Gérard (his portrait of the Empress Joséphine), Antoine-Denis Chaudet, Charles-Louis Corbet, Alphonse-Henri Guy de Gisors, Jean Broc, and many others, both fledgling and established. Isaac Haffner [Isaak Haffner] Professor der Theologie und Prediger bey der Gemeine zu St. Nicolai
Amand König, 1801. Halbleder, xxxii, 506 vi, 501 Seiten. Frakturschrift.

TATHAM, William
London: J. and T. Carpenter. 8vo., xix + (I) + 427 + (1)pp., engraved plates and two text figures, the plates rather stained, wanting the half-title, a few emphasis marks in pencil and early annotations in ink, old, probably original boards, rebacked in cloth with a printed paper label, uncut. A good large copy. First edition. Kress B.4464. Goldsmiths 18194. Rothamsted (1st ed.) p.127 (noting 6 plates). Perkins 1724. Fussell, III, pp.31-2. A curious book by an eccentric Anglo-American. William Tatham (1752-1819) was sent to America in 1769 to seek his fortune. He obtained a commission at the outbreak of the War of Independence and took part in campaigns against the Cherokees and Creeks and the siege of Yorktown. In 1784 he was admitted to the bar of Virginia, in 1787 elected a member of the state legislature of North Carolina and in 1795 he was dispatched to Spain as American envoy to settle some boundary disputes in Florida. After his return to England in 1796 he became superintendent of the London Docks at Wapping in 1801. In 1805 he returned to America in poor circumstances, had problems with alcohol and bizarrely committed suicide in Feb. 1819 by stepping in front of a cannon at the moment of discharge. Perhaps the most interesting parts of Tatham's book on irrigation are the additional essays, including his Hints towards employing the vagrant and disorderly classes of the community in works of national irrigation, inland navigation and drainage; as a remuneration to society for the depredations they may have committed> [pp.359-382], and his ingenious Plan for raising t … [Click Below for Full Description]

French-American Trade]
[Dieppe, France, 1801. [1]p. printed circular letter on a folded folio sheet, the blank fourth page addressed in manuscript and postmarked at Boston, Oct. 23 [1801] and with a "Ship" cancel. Docketed on the fourth page as well. Old folds, some edge wear, small tears at edges of fold, fourth page torn from wax seal. Very good overall. An interesting and rare artifact of the attempt to rebuild French-American trading relations in the wake of the so-called "Quasi-War" between the two nations. The Quasi-War was an undeclared conflict between the United States and France during John Adams' administration in the late 1790s, manifested mostly in naval engagements between the two nations. The war wreaked havoc on American commerce with France, which only began to be rebuilt with the Convention of 1800. The present printed circular was created by "Le Baron fils," the former American consular agent in Dieppe, and was apparently sent to a variety of American merchants, encouraging them to once again send shipments of American goods to that French port. Not much is known of Le Baron fils, though he did correspond with Benjamin Franklin, and he served as the American consular agent at Dieppe for several years. This copy of Le Baron fils' circular was sent to prominent New York merchant and politician Nicholas Low and is dated in manuscript July "24." It is addressed to Low in manuscript on the fourth page, and his name is also written in the upper left corner of the circular. In the printed text Le Baron fils states: "you may see by the inclosed Price Current of our Colonial & Amer … [Click Below for Full Description]

Socquet, Joseph-Marie.
Paris Desray 1801 - (20 x 12 cm). XVI, 473 S. Mit 1 gefalteten Kupfertafel. Peter Pindar
London - Wood, Vernon, H. Walker and P. Bell 1801 - A collection of The Works of Peter Pindar, Esquire. In three volumes; originally published in two volumes, with an additional volume published at a later date. John Wolcot (9 May 1738 14 January 1819) was an English satirist, who wrote under the pseudonym of Peter Pindar. In 1780, Wolcot went to London and began writing satires. The first objects of his attentions were the members of the Royal Academy. These attempts being well received, he soon began to fly at higher game, the King and Queen being the most frequent marks for his satirical shafts. In 1786 he published The Lousiad, a Heroi-Comic Poem, which took its name from a legend that a louse had once appeared on the King's dinner plate. Other objects of his attack were Boswell, the biographer of Samuel Johnson, James Bruce, the Abyssinian traveller, Hannah More, former bluestocking and playwright, and Bishop Porteus. Wolcot had a remarkable vein of humour and wit, which, while intensely comic to persons not involved, stung its subjects to the quick. He had likewise strong intelligence, and a power of coining effective phrases. In other kinds of composition, as in some ballads which he wrote, an unexpected touch of gentleness and even tenderness appears. Among these are The Beggar Man and Lord Gregory. Much that he wrote has now lost all interest owing to the circumstances referred to being forgotten, but enough still retains its peculiar relish to account for his contemporary reputation. [Crèvecoeur, Michel Guillaume St. Jean]
Paris, 1801. Three volumes. xxxi,[1],427; xiii,[1],434; xii,409,[1]pp., plus four folding tables, four folding maps, and seven plates (four folding). Half title in each volume. Modern three-quarter tan calf and marbled boards, spines gilt, leather labels. Occasional age-toning, but very neat and clean. A near fine set. The first edition of this little-known work by Crèvecoeur, which was not translated into English until the 1960s. A German edition appeared in 1802. Despite the wording in the title, this is an original work by Crèvecoeur, offered under the guise of a translation. The author spent twenty-four years in North America and contributed some of the finest literature of the Revolutionary era. The present work is largely devoted to the Indians of the Pennsylvania frontier in the period before the arrival of Europeans in that region. Unfairly overlooked at the time of its publication, the work presents much interesting and important information. Modern scholars (see THE WILLIAM & MARY QUARTERLY issue cited below) have placed Crèvecoeur's LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN FARMER... and his short study of the Caribbean firmly in the school of the 18th-century philosophers interested in "global anthropology" and "cultural geography." The present work, focused as it is on the characteristics and customs of American Indians, would seem to be a further important contribution by Crèvecoeur to that movement. "This work is distinguished by its valuable details on the aboriginal tribes, and their gradual disappearance. No other writer has so well described the Indian great cou … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Moscow], 1801. Five folded sheets of heavy laid paper, sewn, 35 × 22 cm, with twelve pages of holograph text. Outer leaf torn along fold; occasional light moisture stains and foxing; good or better. Official copy of an excerpt, presumably from the project of a general cadastre of Russian Imperial lands, known as "general'noe mezhevanie" and initiated by Catherine the Great in 1766. The present document contains a cadastral survey of territories and estates in today's Moscow Oblast', and was presumably a copy provided to the landlords (who do not appear to be identified). Written in a late eighteenth-century chancery hand and signed by one Aleksei Zalevskii, Statskii sovetnik (State Councillor) Zubov, and one additional official whose signature is illagible. With the offical stamp of Pavel (Paul) I, the Russian Tsar from 1796 to 1801. See Paul M. Fekula Collection, no. 2014 for a comparable, but later document.

Woodward, Augustus B.
Washington, Metropolis of the United States of America: Printed by Way and Groff, 1801. 89,[1]pp. plus interleaved blanks. Contemporary calf. Calf somewhat chipped and worn, front board nearly detached. Apart from some minimal foxing and light transparent stains on prelims and terminal leaves, a very good, crisp copy. With an early presentation inscription on the title-leaf: "William B. Randolph from T.D. Stone." The first edition of the first substantial work by the multi-faceted jurist, future codifier of the laws of Michigan Territory, and intellectual father of the University of Michigan. While Woodward's accomplishment in this work consists largely of a review of classical and contemporary hypotheses of the sun's constitution rather than any particularly original notions, the book is nonetheless an interesting and early contribution to the topic by an American. Four years after its publication, Woodward was appointed by his friend, Thomas Jefferson, to one of the three judicial seats for the Territory of Michigan where, in addition to compiling "The Woodward Code," he was active in the design of the city of Detroit. In 1816 he published A SYSTEM OF UNIVERSAL SCIENCE, wherein was laid out the basis for the act of 1817 creating the "Catholepistemiad, or University, of Michigania." The interleaving of this copy is clearly original or very nearly contemporary with publication, since some notes appear on one of the interleaved sheets. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 1684 (2 copies).

Fourcroy classed substances into eight categories according to their composition, form simple elements to complex organic compounds ; his discussions of each category drew both from his own extensive knowledge of chemistry and from the latest observations and discoveries of French and foreign colleagues. Fourcroy considered that chemistry could be understood only through study of its four parts - history, theory, practice and application - and at first had intended to write separate treatises for each, but ended up incorporating short accounts of the other parts in the present work, as he was not sure he would live to complete the project at first planned." ---- Partington III - DSB V pp. 89/93 - Honeyman N° 1357 - Cole N° 480 [Attributes … [Click Below for Full Description]
