Lord George Gordomn Byron
- In 1801, great English Romantic poet Lord Byron was sent to Harrow, a distinguished preparatory school, where he remained until July 1805. At that point, he engaged to enter Cambridge. His mother received 500 pounds a year from the Court of Chancery for her sonÕs education, so when he went to Cambridge, she gave up this allowance to her son to pay for his education, which provided a comfortable sum for the young man. His relationship with his mother was tumultuous, and he used this sum, as well as a further sum promised just to his mother from the Chancery, to use Cambridge to declare his independence. ÒAs I am to have a very handsome allowance which does not deprive her of a sixpence since there is an addition made from my fortune by the Chancellor for the purpose, I shall be perfectly independent of her and as she has long since trampled upon and harrowed up every affectionate tie."Cambridge was a formative time, where he met and formed a close friendship with the younger John Edleston and many others who would influence or whom he would influence. He spent three years at Trinity College.Document signed, ÒByron,Ó being his final disbursal of pay for his tuition expenses at Cambridge for his first quarter there. ÒReceived 19th December 1805 of Mr. John Hanson the sum of Fifty Pounds which with Seventy five pounds before paid is in full for a quarters allowance to Christmas next for my maintenance etc at Cambridge and which I received by your order and on account of my mother.Ó [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Provenance: Iain Crompton (signature and bibliographical note on second free endpaper); Michael Sharpe (bookplate to front pastedown); Galloway & Porter, Cambridge (sticker to front pastedown). A very good and wide-margined copy. ---- PMM 257; Dibner Heralds of Science 114; Grolier/Horblit 38; Norman 878; DSB IV, p.299f. FIRST EDITION of the work which revolutionised number theory, and established the twenty-four year old Gauss as a mathematical genius. The son of a bricklayer, he had actually discovered the theory of quadratic reciprocity, which both Euler and Legendre had failed to prove, at no more than 18 years of age. He also described the discovery of a method of inscribing in a circle a regular polygon of seventeen sides - the first discovery of this kind in Euclidean geometry for over two thousand years. The new mathematics so confused the typesetters that, in addition to the lengthy 4-page errata, the worst mistakes in the book were corrected by cancel leaves. In our copy leaves B7, G4, K3, Ff7, and Tt6 are cancels; none … [Click Below for Full Description]

SULTZER (Charles)
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Map] Fahlberg, Samuel
Graverad af Fr. Akrel, Stockholm år 1801. This copy printed in the 1990s. Plate mark. 52 x 74 cm The whole sheet 56 x 76 cm. Hand colored engraving.A crease across the map on the left side. Very nice condition. A swedish map of the West Indian island of Saint Barthelemy. The island was a swedish colony from1784 to1878. The capital Gustavia is named after the swedish king Gustavus III. The map was made by Samuel Fahlberg who was sent to the colony as a physician but soon developed many different talents, among them surveying and map making. The island is clearly divided into several adminastrative units or "Quarter". They are marked in different colours. The administrative make up of the island is explained in a table and in a short text on the left side of the map. A legend can be found in the lower left corner. The original map from 1801 is exceedingly rare. This is a hand colored print made in the 1990s from the original copper plate which surfaced at an auction in Sweden. The copper plate was later sold to the United States. It is unclear how many copies that were printed in the 1990s, but only some of them were hand coloured. I have had the opportunity to compare the present map with a first edition printed in 1801. The colouring of this map is of very high quality, almost identical with the 1801 map.

Montes de Oca, Jose Maria
- The first entirely engraved book printed in the Americas / Japonica. Mexico. 1801. - Engraved title, and thirty engraved plates. One plate printed in sepia with some hand coloring. Small quarto. Uncut copy. 215 x 155 mm Series of thirty beautiful and, for that period, advanced engravings by Montes de Oca depicting the life of the patron saint of Mexico, San Felipe de Jesus. Born in Mexico City in 1575, he travelled to Manila, where he became a priest. In a series of delicately rendered engravings of real power, this work depicts the life of Felipe de Jesus at full length. The first twelve plates depict his early life and call to God. The next ten plates depict his shipwreck in Japan, near Nagasaki, his persecutors, and death by crucifixion at the hands of the Japanese. The last five plates record his beatification in 1627 and miracles attributed to him. Montes de Oca was a major figure among engravers and book illustrators in the fourth quarter of the 18th and the first quarter of the 19th centuries, and this VIDA DE SAN FELIPE DE JESUS is his finest, most ambitious and most extensive work. This work is entirely engraved, including the explanatory text below each well conceived and well executed illustration, making it the first book printed in Mexico not from moveable type. Many copies appear lacking one or two plates, but this has the full complement of thirty plus the engraved titlepage.

BELL, John
Cadell, Davies, Longman, Rees, Creech, Manners and Miller, London. This is the very rare 1801 first edition, first impression of the first volume of this important work, volume 2 being published much later, in 1806, followed by volume 3 in 1808. Volume 1 is by far the rarest of the 3 volumes. John Bell is considered to be a founder of the modern surgery of the vascular system. The 674-page text is in very good, tight, clean condition, with some very light age-browning but with negligible foxing. Light foxing of the blank end papers. Vignette title page a little dusty. 12 coloured plates, 7 black-and-white plates and 60 text drawings. The original 19th Century half leather and marbled boards binding is quite worn, with partial cracking of the hinges, but the hinges are still very secure. The spine has raised bands, gilt decoration and gilt title on the original black leather title panel. See photographs of this copy attached. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"Pinel...located the origin of mental disease in pathological changes in the brain and gave impetus to the humanitarian treatment of the insane" (Heirs of Hippocrates, 1070). MICHAUX, André (1746-1802) - Pierre-Joseph REDOUTÉ (1759-1840).
Paris: l'Imprimerie de Crapelet, 1801. Folio (17 x 11 ¾ inches). Half-title. 36 fine engraved plates (marginal staining throughout, not affecting images). Contemporary full mottled calf, gilt fillets, the smooth spine in 6 gilt-ruled compartments (darkened by smoke, front hinge cracked). First edition. With 32 plates after Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the remainder by his brother Henri-Joseph Redouté (1766-1852). Michaux was a French botanist and explorer best known for his study of North American flora. The present volume, a study of North American oaks, represents "the results of Michaux's ten year sojourn in North America under the commission from the French government. His interest in North American trees was also to assess their importance as timber for the construction of naval vessels" (A Catalogue of Rédoutéana, 8). Michaux's "contribution to our knowledge of American plant life made for him a place of imperishable distinction as an American botanist" (Humphry, Makers of North American Botany, p. 177). Upon the death of his wife in 1770, Michaux was plunged into a deep depression. "The naturalist Louis-Guillaume Le Monnier (1717-1799) recommended a sustained study how foreign plants could be grown in France as a way to occupy the heartbroken Michaux. Michaux followed the advice. He conducted experiments on his farm and later became a student of the French naturalist Bernard de Jussieu (1699-1777) at Trianon. "Michaux subsequently studied at the Jardin du Roi, now known as Jardin des Plantes in Paris. During this period, he made the acquaintance of many eminent scienti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary brown morocco rebacked to style, red morocco title label, smooth spine ruled in gilt. Folding table. Small ownership signature to front free endpaper. Board corners worn, boards slightly rubbed, small ink stain to fore edge of text block and rear endpapers. A very good copy. Later edition of what is generally considered the first guide to the stock exchange, based on the author's own experience of losing "a genteel fortune" in 1756. Thomas Mortimer (1730–1810) was one of the earliest experts on the operation of the stock exchange established in the coffee-house of London's Change Alley. Every Man his Own Broker is a practical guide for would-be speculators, warning about the dangers of getting involved with brokers and gives a valuable insight into the financial world of mid-eighteenth-century London. Mortimer was the first to write about the terms "bear" and "bull" markets and provides their definitions on pages 65 and 67. The appendix includes "directions to strangers to find their way readily to the different offices at the Bank, South-Sea and India Houses". Every Man His Own Broker was first published in 1761 and ran into fourteen editions in the following forty years, this copy being the thirteenth, enlarged, edition.

[iii]-vi, 88 pp. Engraved title and vignette, 4 portraits, index, Bookseller's advertisement: p. 81-88, erratum (p.88); lightly foxed. Verso of title with rubber-stamps [withdrawn] of the Wellcome Library. Very good. Second edition (not stated), but no copy of a first printing known. 4 leaves of plates, all portraits. RARE. The book features four portraits of illustrious physicians: Jenner, William Woodville, George Pearson, F.R.S. (an early advocate in support of Jenner), and Benjamin Waterhouse (an advocate of vaccination, even advising President John Adams). Creighton writes of this work, "Dr. Lettsom, a leading physician, and a fussy or influential person among the charitable, rushed to the help of the endangered cowpox project with a letter [within this book] dated 25th November, 1800: 'The disease,' he assured the public, 'was not cowpock, but morbid ulceration, originating from the purulent matter formed under the scab or dried pustule or the cowpock.' Lettsom, whose writings prove him to have been something of a windbag, did not know what he was talking about.'" - p. 179. London: Printed by A. Strahan for T. N. Longman and O. Rees, 1801. London: Printed by A. Strahan for T. N. Longman and O. Rees,, 1801. intended as a companion to Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England; and peculiarly calculated to qualify young noblemen and gentlemen for situations in any of the public offices under government, and for parliamentary business. Octavo (225 x 141 mm). Original drab yellow paper spine, blue paper sides, paper spine label, uncut. Front joint cracked and a little tender, a few nicks and chips to spine, paper creased or awkwardly folded in places (during production). An excellent copy, tall, clean and crisp. First octavo edition, originally published in quarto as The Elements of Commerce, Politics and Finances (London 1772). Thomas Mortimer (1730-1810) was a prolific writer on trade and finance, perhaps best known for Every Man His Own Broker: or a Guide to the Stock Exchange (1761). In his introduction to the present edition, Mortimer notes that the idea for "a cheaper edition, and a new form of compiling it, [was] suggested by some respectable gentlemen of the University of Oxford, to whom the author paid a visit in the year 1798, as likely to be more useful to young students". The subscriber's list runs to around 170 names, headed by the Marquis of Lansdowne, and includes Sir William Hamilton, Lord Nelson, and John Horne Tooke. Scarce: Copac cites copies at seven British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Chetham's Library, Glasgow, LSE, Scotland, Edinburgh, Senate House); well-represented in OCLC but most uncommon in commerce.

LANDON, Charles Paul, editor & author]
- 120 pp. 8vo, cont. half-calf & marbled boards (spine slightly rubbed), red morocco lettering piece on spine, gilt cipher of Eugène de Beauharnais on covers. Paris: Didot Jeune, An IX [1801]. First edition of this rare Salon commentary. Landon (1760-1826), prominent art critic, historian, and popularizer of contemporary art, wielded great influence over the French art world in the early 19th century. He served as curator of paintings at the Louvre and was the personal painter to Charles Ferdinand, duc de Berry. Three of Landon's paintings were exhibited at various Salons, including the present one. Landon also wrote and edited more than 100 works, including important histories of art, biographies of artists, and numerous catalogues and inventories of collections such as that of the Palais du Luxembourg. In this work, Landon presents the commentaries of anonymous critics, as well as his own, on that year's Salon. They describe a wide range of artworks, occasionally expressing acerbic opinions on the items displayed ("I will not comment on the attempts of these two young artists?to make clear the abuse of derived principles, in a good school, but poorly felt and falsely applied, and the danger of exhibiting in public the first fruits of a talent which is not yet refined"-page 20). The critics remark on works by artists and architects such as Alexandre-Évariste Fragonard, François Gérard (his portrait of the Empress Joséphine), Antoine-Denis Chaudet, Charles-Louis Corbet, Alphonse-Henri Guy de Gisors, Jean Broc, and many others, both fledgling and established.
