GENTZ, Friedrich von
1 p.l., 333 pp. 8vo, cont. marbled half-calf & marbled boards (corners slightly rounded), spine ornately gilt, red morocco lettering-piece on spine. Berlin: H. Frölich, 1801.First edition and an attractive copy of this important conservative analysis of the French Revolution and the resulting disruptions throughout Europe. Gentz (1764-1832), a prolific author and zealous critic of the Revolution and Napoleon, studied under Kant in Königsberg. During his years as a lower-level government official in Berlin, he wrote several essays and books to great acclaim, including a very successful translation of Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France. Aware of his significant influence, the British even paid Gentz for works antagonistic to the French cause or laudatory of Britain's political and economic systems. Following his divorce and move to Vienna, he met and collaborated with Klemens von Metternich, and together they crafted the underpinnings of modern European conservatism, beginning with the Congress of Vienna, where Gentz served as secretary of the Austrian delegation. In this work "Gentz's whole conception of the Revolution had developed in a direction that was strikingly similar to that of Burke. More precisely, the Revolution came to signify to Gentz the eruption of the wildest form of anarchy and chaos into social life, the making abso … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexander Mackenzie, a senior wintering partner with the North West Company, sought an overland passage from the fur-bearing regions of the Athabasca Country to the Pacific Ocean. 'First crossing of the continent from ocean to ocean by a white man'. Hill 187. Following Peter Pond's speculation that the Pacific Ocean might be reached by a water route from Great Slave Lake, his first expedition in 1789 started out at Fort Chipewyan. This route did not take him to the Pacific as he had hoped, but to the Arctic "Frozen Ocean" down the river that would later become the Mackenzie River. In his second attempt to reach the Pacific, Mackenzie ascended the Peace River by cano … [Click Below for Full Description]

ZASTROW, Adolf von.
1801. Jordan 4198. First edition of a history of fortification by the Prussian general Alexander Friedrich Adolf Heinrich von Zastrow (1801-1875), who served in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). It deals with fortification methods by different military writers and engineers, starting with Albrecht Dürer's treatise on fortification, first published in 1527. In the next chapter, on Italian fortification, he praises the military engineers of the Renaissance for adjusting the shape of fortresses to suit the terrain. Other chapters deal with the Dutch (Van Coehoorn), French (Vauban, Cormontaigne) and German (Spekel, Rimpler) methods of fortification, illustrated with ground plans and profiles on the folding plates.Foxed and a water stain in the upper outside corner throughout, also affecting the plates. A fair copy. Binding rubbed along the extremities, but otherwise good. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Milton, John and Mirrielees, Edith R. [Annotator]
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1801/1803/1920s. Edith Mirrielees was a renowned and beloved teacher of creative writing at Stanford from 1909 to 1944. Her most famous student was John Steinbeck, but she also influenced such writers as Howard Pease and Allen Drury. Her book Story Writing is a classic in the field of literary education. The books on offer are her personal copies of English Poems by John Milton, edited by R.C. Browne with additional notes by Henry Bradley. There are two volumes, Volume I dated 1801 and Volume II dated 1803. The text of Paradise Lost is split between the two 16mo volumes, Books I through VI in the first and Books VII to XII in the second.Professor Mirrielees has annotated the text of Paradise Lost with extensive marginalia, which provides insight into how she read and taught the text to individuals such as Steinbeck, who was influenced by Milton's work when he wrote his lesser known but highly regarded novel In Dubious Battle. The condition of the books speak to their extensive use by Professor Mirrielees. Covers are worn and Volume I is missing its spine and has a stain on the cover. The marginalia are mainly in pencil, in tiny but readable handwriting.

Chez Maradan, Paris, 1801. 3 volumes. xii+427 pages with frontispiece portrait, 3 plates (one folding) and folding map; xiv+454 pages with two folding plate and two folding maps; xii+409+[errata] with 4 folding tables and 1 folding plate. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5") bound in original half leather with brown label in gilt lettering over marbled boards. (Howes C884. Sabin 17501. Field 388. Monaghan 503.) First edition. This work by the author had been written in his declining years. In a biography of his great-grandfather the author alleges in his introduction that the Voyage is a manuscript found in a shipwreck-and even whole chapters of which are either lost or water-soaked beyond legibility, and that he is the translator of this work. Written with greater care than his Letters, the work, except for several fanciful chapters, offers very real interest and authenticity. The numerous notes in the three volumes have appreciable interest. In the Voyage he is still writing of an agrarian Utopia. Pastoral descriptions abound-farmlands, irrigation projects, cattle, salt-feeding, etc, are all part of parcel of the subject-matter (as they were in the famous Letters)-but in Creavecoeur's last work one reads of a landed gentry who have impressive libraries and private chamber music ensembles-a far cry from the humble man of homespun tastes characteristic of the Letters. Condition: Map at back fold of volume two detached, book-plates to front end papers, inner hinge cracked, corners rubbed and bumped else about very good. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Schlegel, Dorothea v.).
– Handschriftl. Arrowsmith, Aaron.
London, A. Arrowsmith No. 24 Rathbone Place, 1801. Engraved map, fine original hand-colour, edged with blue silk, housed in original marbled paper chemise and slipcase, with red morocco label, lettered in gilt. 1470 x 1290 mm. The most accurate map of Asia published at the beginning of the 19th century. It shows significant advancement compared with other maps of the period, incorporating the work of surveyors like James Rennell, to whom the map was dedicated. Rennell was surveyor-general of the East India Company's dominions in Bengal, and the information published in his "Bengal Atlas" in 1779 appears here. Arrowsmith also included remarkable topographical detail such as mountain ranges in regions as remote as Tibet. Remarkably the region on the shore of the Arabian Gulf is already labelled as "Bani Yas" territory. Arrowsmith has marked the track of Lapérouse's voyage in the Indian Ocean and Far East. - Aaron Arrowsmith (1750-1823) was the finest cartographer of his generation. Although he received little formal education, it is believed that he was provided with some mathematical instruction by William Emerson, an author of several books on the application of mathematics to the area of cartography. Around 1770, Arrowsmith moved to London to seek employment. It is believed that he worked for William Faden before joining John Cary Sr. in the early 1780s. There he provided the measurements for John Cary's early publication detailing the roads from London to Falmouth, his first signed work. Arrowsmith set up on his own in 1790 and over the next thirty years produced some of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Riem, Andreas).
Jerusalem (d. i. Leipzig, Fleischer), Im Jahre nach der kleinen Zeitrechnung 561. Der Christlichen 1801. Der Republikanischen 9. Erste (einzige?) [Click Below for Full Description]

The ESTC entry (and the ECCO scan of the Bodleian copy) do not call for a half-title in that work (present here and giving a price of 1s 6d), nor for advertisments at the end, here giving 3 pages of books 'Printed and sold by R. Hindmarsh, printer to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales' - two pages of works in English and one in Latin, all Swedenborgian. (Hyde 470; Hyde 2542, ESTC T188152)

RAMOND de CARBONNIÈRES
Paris: 1801. Voir description. Itard, Jean Marc Gaspard
Paris: Goujon fils, An X, [1801]. Hardcover. First Edition of this famous work. Jean Itard (1774-1838) was a French doctor who was known as an educator of deaf-mutes. He tried to test his educational theories in the celebrated case of Victor - The Wild Boy - of Aveyron. The boy was found in the woods in a feral state and was believed to have lived there for years. Itard worked to make the boy "normal," but failed. In this first report Itard was optimistic about the feral child's prospects for language acquisition and socialization. In his 1807 second report his conclusions were much more pessimistic, as even after a number of years of intensive education the boy had been unable to learn to speak. Itard's methods, described in his two reports, were based upon the philosopher Condillac's analytical approach to the acquisition of knowledge, which had been used with success in the teaching of deaf-mutes. However, Itard created a new system of pedagogy in adapting this approach to the needs of this extraordinary boy. [Haskell Norman Catalog 1144]. A small octavo bound in modern marbled brown paper covered boards with gilt-stamped spine. Lacking the frontispiece portrait of the "Wild Boy" and trimmed a bit closely at the top margin, otherwise very good with minor foxing. With two minor early corrections to pages 45-46 and an early marginal ink comment to page 7. Signed as usual by Itard and Goujon on the verso of the title page to prevent piracy. 100 pages. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]
