"the earliest expedition made by a white man in this direction. His investigations, although pursued at so early a period of Arctic exploration, were remarkable for their accuracy; Sir John Franklin more than once expressed his surprise at being able to corroborate their correctness in his own explorations. Some Indian vocabularies are included. (Sabin). Mackenzie's journals recount his two expeditions undertaken on behalf of the North West Company in their attempt to break the Hudson's Bay Company's monopoly of the fur trade. The first expedition, in 1879, from Fort Chipewyan on Lake Athabaska down what is now known as the Mackenzie River to the Arctic constitutes the first trip to the Arctic from the Canadian Prairies. The second, in 1792-93, from Fort Chipewyan over the Rocky Mountains by the Peace and Fraser Rivers to the Pacific, is distinguished as the first overland expedition to reach the Pacific, north of Mexico. The maps are the earliest of certain parts of Canada. Also included is a lengthy account of the development of the fur trade in the North West, generally attributed to the author's cousin, Roderick Mackenzie. .

Edwy and Elgiva; A Tragedy, in Five Acts. Performed at the New Theatre

Philadelphia: Published by Asbury Dickins . . . H. Maxwell, Printer, 1801, 1801. First edition. American Bibliography 700; Hill, American Plays, 144. 8vo, modern blue paper wrappers, stitched, 84 pages. Half-title present. The first book by Charles Jared Ingersoll (1782-1862), a Philadelphian who later became a prominent congressman and lawyer. Edwy and Elgiva was successfully performed at Philadelphia's Chestnut Street Theater in April, 1801, when Ingersoll was just 19 years old. The plot is an adaptation of the well known tale of a 10th century English monarch, Edwy, who marries his relative Elgiva - a story which was also successfully adapted for the stage by Fanny Burney. Though Ingersoll soon after entered the bar and politics, he remained close to the Port Folio crowd and in 1810 anonymously published the interesting satire Inchquin, the Jesuit's Letters, During a Late Residence in the United States of America.

Examen de la Legislation Romaine, Anglaise et Francaise, En Matiere Criminelle; Et Moyen de Proportionner la Peine au Delit. Paris: Chez Garnery/Rondonneau/Veuve Richard, An 11 [1801]. Light toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. $750. * Only edition. An interesting work of comparative criminal law from the Consulate period that compares ideas of proportionality in the punishment of criminals according to Roman, French and English law. Sarreste outlines a history of debates concerning sentencing around the time of the French Revolution, drawing on contemporary debates in Great Britain and the work of writers like Beccaria and Blackstone. He discusses the nature of punishment, acts that may be classified as crimes, areas in which civil and criminal law overlap and the circumstances that establish criminal liability. He goes on to examine the penalties in England and France for various categories of crime, noting, to cite two examples, the severity of the death penalty for fraud in Great Britain and the absurdity of treating rape differently according to the age of the victim in France. OCLC locates 7 copies worldwide, 1 in North America (UC-Berkeley Law School). Another copy located at George Washington University Law School.

Note ut. Sur les "Sauvages de l'Amerique septentrionale". In 1801 the famous French navigator, Admiral Louis-Antoine Bougainville, presented a paper to theInstitut national des Sciences et des Artswhich was published inMémoires de l'Institut national des Sciences et des Arts - Sciences et politiques, tome 3, Paris, mai 1801 (pp 322-346), as Notice historique sur les sauvages de l'Amérique Septentrionale par le citoyen Bougainville, lue le 7 thermidor an 7. However, the content of the present short note concerning the custom of avenging homicide is not referred to in Bougainville's published paper.

In Paris he wrote some of his most important works such as De iure belli ac pacis.More information in:Sassen, F. Examen de la Legislation Romaine, Anglaise et Francaise, En Matiere Criminelle; Et Moyen de Proportionner la Peine au Delit. Paris: Chez Garnery/Rondonneau/Veuve Richard, An 11 [1801]. [iv], 192 pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"). Original publisher wrappers, untrimmed edges, unopened signatures. A few minor stains, spine abraded and worn though at ends. Titelkupfer von Poll nach Th. Weber. Halblederbd d.

Gutes Exemplar. – H./B.       London: Gardiner, Egerton & Wright, , 1801. h 5 volumes octavo. Contemporary streaked calf, red morocco lettering pieces, volume numbers in green morocco roundels to the fourth compartment, edges sprinkled blue. 16 crisply-engraved folding maps and plans Lightly rubbed, corners bumped, some skilful repair to scrapes and gouges to the boards of the first two volumes, tan-burn from the turn-ins to the endpapers, pale browning of the text-blocks. First 4 volumes second editions, the fifth a first. Sometimes ascribed to Thomas Graham, Baron Lynedoch (cf. Halkett & Laing). Contemporary account of the French Revolutionary Wars, with considerable detail of early campaigns of Napoleon, "a young man … [who] was almost constantly victorious in Italy" (Preface). The author offers to those who "would wish to have before them, in one view, all the various facts … combined, arranged, and connected … The Materials from which this work is composed, have been partly collected fro, the accounts officially published at London, Vienna, and Paris; and partly procured, through means of correspondence constantly kept up with some distinguished military characters on the Continent. Some of these have been, and still are, actually engaged in this war; and others have watched its progress with the most attentive and intelligent observation … The knowledge which [the author] himself has personally had of the greater part of the theatre of the war, some of the armies which are engaged in it, and of several of the Generals who command them, joined to some degree of experience on the subject cannot have failed to be of considerable use to him". Fine contemporary armorial bookplate of the Scottish banker and philanthropist Sir William Forbes, 6th Baronet of Monymusk and Pitsligo: "Forbes was a close friend of the poet and philosopher James Beattie, and also of James Boswell, who introduced him to Samuel Johnson in 1773. Urbane and welcoming, with refined tastes in music, dancing, and drawing, Forbes gravitated towards London, where he made his mark in two ways. At one level he was a conversationalist, accepted in West End society, a member of Johnson's Literary Club, and a friend of Sir Joshua Reynolds (for whom he sat); at the other level he was a wise banker, introduced by Lord Melville to William Pitt the younger, who took his advice in monetary matters" (ODNB).

Boston: by David Carlisle for Joseph Nancrede, 1801. Rare first edition. 8vo, unbound sheets as printed. 54 pp. Very well preserved with just some of the toning one would anticipate and a few minor occasional spots or small stains. RARE, WE KNOW OF NO OTHER COPY CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET AND ONLY ONE COPY AT AUCTION (1991) IN THE LAST 40 YEARS. There are only 32 copies listed in institutional holdings, several of which belong to Harvard. The author, an impartial citizen", is attributed to be James Sullivan (April 22, 1744 - December 10, 1808) who was a lawyer and politician in Massachusetts. He was an early associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, served as the state's attorney general for many years, and as governor of the state from 1807 until his death. Being such a well known figure in public service it is understandable why he would have wanted this publication to be anonymous. When Massachusetts debated ratification of the United States Constitution in 1788, Sullivan was one of a number of Massachusetts politicians who expressed reservations about the document, but generally supported ratification. In the debate he proposed that the convention conditionally adopt the Constitution, subject to Congress considering and acting on a suite of amendments.

Aquatint, finished by hand.l A fine, large plate of the Kandersteig (= Kandersteg) lake (= Oeschinensee) and glaciers, in the Swiss canton of Bern.Drawn "on the spot" by Claude Louis Châtelet (1753-1795), engraved by the French engraver Jaques Mérigot (later James Merigot; d. 1816) and painted by P. Vanlerberghe from Flanders, who was also known as an etcher. Mérigot and Vanlerberghe moved to London sometime in the 1790's. This plate was made several years after the death of Châtelet. "[Châtelet] embraced with ardour the cause of the Revolution, allied himself with Robespierre and the leaders of the Jacobins, and became a member of the Revolutionary Tribunal. He was arrested some months after the 9th Thermidor, tried, condemned, and executed in Paris, May 7, 1795" (Wikipedia). It is tempting to assume that Mérigot, and perhaps Van Lerberghe too, had close ties with Châtelet and therefore fled to London. As far as we know this plate is a piece of art on its own, not meant to be part of book. It is one of the earliest views of the glacier and it may be of importance in establishing the retreat of the glacier in historic times. A very wide-margined copy. Small chips to the lower corners, slight age-toning, but generally in very good condition, with the imprint and colouring strong and bright.

Michaux was originally sent to America as the Royal botanist of France to investigate plants for their potential commercial value in the French economy. His exploration and documentation continued after the collapse of the French monarchy, successfully securing support from the American Philosophical Society. Michaux's travels also brought him to parts of Europe, Persia, and Madagascar, where he died around 1802. As a result of his prolific work, numerous plants bear his name, such as the Carolina lily (Lilium michauxii). This volume is large, heavy, and fragile; additional postage will be required.
