        The American Cowslip

      London 1801 - The most strikingly beautiful flower plates ever to be printed in England "Although it was not introduced into Europe until the earlier part of the eighteenth century, the American Cowslip [Dodecatheon Meadia L.] had by Thornton's time become a firm favourite among gardeners in England. it continues to be grown and several fine garden varieties have been developed from the wild plant. Rarely more than sixteen inches high, its comparatively small size makes it a useful plant in the rock garden as well as in the border. The name of American Cowslip was given to it because the flowerhead arises, like an English cowslip, from a basal rosette of leaves, and the pendulous flowers, although individually unlike, are in each plant carried in an umbel.Its pointed flowers with upright petals have earned it the additional name of Shooting Star in its native country. In the picture it is shown growing on cliffs by the sea, a situation which affords a fine background against which to show off the virtues of the plant, its neat habit and graceful hanging flowers." ".[Thornton] inherited a competent fortune and trained as a doctor. He appears to have had considerable success in practice and was appointed both physician to the Marylebone Dispensary and lecturer in medical botany at Guy's and St. Thomas's hospitals. But quite early in his career he embarked on his. great work. What Redouté produced under the patronage of L'Héritier, Marie Antoinette, the Empress Josephine, Charles X and the Duchesse de Berry, Thornton set out to do alone.Numerous important artists were engaged. twenty-eight paintings of flowers commissioned from Abraham Pether, known as `Moonlight Pether', Philip Reinagle, . Sydenham Edwards, and Peter Henderson.The result.involved Thornton in desperate financial straits. In an attempt to extricate himself he organized the Royal Botanic Lottery, under the patronage of the Prince Regent.it is easy to raise one's eyebrows at Thornton's unworldly and injudicious approach to publishing.But he produced.one of the loveliest books in the world" (Alan Thomas Great Books and Book Collecting , pp.142-144). "In the first state, there is only one patch of blue sky over the nearer of the two ships, which together present an appearance of perspective. The foreground changes gradually from dark at the bottom to lighter under the rocks, which are more or less unbroken. In the second state.tufts of grass stand out sharply in front of the rocks at the back of the foreground, while bushes growing out of the rocks are enlarged.In the third state, the plate has been reworked almost all over.The foreground now shows alternate light and dark patches, and the crevices in the rocks show up more".       London: Printed for Lackington, Allen and Co., 1801.. First Edition, First Printing. First Edition. Quarto, bound in contemporary full vellum. 175 pp + 198 pp + [2] pp ads. Half-title, engraved portrait frontispiece, twenty-two engraved plates and tables including four hand-coloured engravings of Demons, one plate partially folding, publishers advertising leaf at rear; separate part-title to Parts 3 and 4 and separate title and pagination to Book Two. Vellum soiled, lower corner torn from front free endpaper (a blank, no loss of text); browning and some minor staining throughout, small chip to vellum at spine head. A very good copy. Rarely encountered in a contemporary binding, this copy is in contemporary vellum, and is the only copy as such of which we are aware. ¶ The First Edition, the real deal. Not to be confused with the 1875 Second Edition (i.e,: reprint), which is sometimes called 'identical', but isn't. Aside from the difference in paper, the 1875 edition is not a straightforward ‘facsimile’ at all. The 1801 edition has the long ‘s’ throughout - the one that looks a bit like a tall ‘f’. The second edition has the normal ‘s’ throughout - a simple method of distinguishing the two. 'The Magus' played a role in the Gothic Revival and more then any other book facilitated the modern revival of magic by making information from otherwise rare books more readily available. The works of Eliphas Levi, The Golden Dawn, MacGregor Mathers, Aleister Crowley and Thelema all owe a debt of gratitude to this work.

        Bowles's New One Sheet Map of Asia

      London: Bowles and Carver, circa, 1801. Dissected map, 54 pieces with three blank replacement pieces (the lost pieces in the regions of Java, Sumatra and Hokkaido); hand-coloured lithograph paper laid down on wood, the completed map measuring 485 x 582 mm., in the original timber box with sliding lid, original printed label. A wonderful children's puzzle created from a very early scarce nineteenth-century map of Asia and the Pacific that includes details of the northernmost portion of Australia as well as an additional inset map of the entire Australian continent. Maps and charts were the first popular subject for puzzles in the eighteenth century, with the London mapmaker John Spilsbury usually credited with popularising them around 1760. Ethnographic and topographic puzzles soon followed, as did interlocking border puzzles (of which this is a particularly good example), the first known examples of which date from the mid-1770s. This puzzle was crafted from a map of greater Asia published by renowned London mapmakers Carter and Bowles. The hand-coloured map has been carefully dissected into 54 pieces which follow coastlines and national boundaries. The inset map of the Australian continent is rich in historical detail. Van Diemen's Land is depicted distinct from the mainland with 'Basses Str.' clearly printed. Notable harbours and landmarks along the eastern seaboard are noted, including Bateman's Bay, Port Jackson, Botany Bay, Cape Byron, Hervey Bay, Cape Morton and Cape York. Interestingly, the inset map records the sites and dates of early Dutch discoveries in Western Australia as well as William Dampier's first landfall of 1688. Regarding the map itself, Bowles's "New One Sheet Map of Asia" was issued several times with amendments. Early impressions bear a watermark dated 1794 and include the partial representation of northernmost Australia, yet lack the depiction of the Australian continent in its entirety reproduced on a smaller scale and inset to the lower left hand corner of the map. Perry & Prescott date the map 1801 - which would accord with the inclusion of Bass Strait - and record that the National Library holds a copy of it bound into an assorted collection of 53 world maps sold in London in the early nineteenth-century.

Although bibliographers often attribute this book to bothRiedesels, it was in fact written by Mrs. Riedesel. Friedrich Riedeselwas in command of the German troops sent to Canada in February of 1776to aid the British. His wife joined him there in the spring of 1777 andaccompanied him on the campaign under Burgoyne which went south into NewYork that fall, ending in the defeat and surrender of all of Burgoyne'sforces at Saratoga on October 17, 1777. The Riedesels were then captivesof the Americans (although under loose parole), first at Cambridge andthen in Virginia, whence the captive army was moved in late 1778. Therelife was quite pleasant, and the prisoners became friendly with ThomasJefferson. Later they spent time in Pennsylvania, Bethlehem, New York andCanada, before finally returning to Europe in 1783. It also shows Portsea, Fareham, Porchester, Gosport, Havant and Hayling Island, and, on the other side of the Solent, Ryde, St Helens, Brading and Sandown on the Isle of Wight. Engraved by Benjamin Baker, it shows the region at a time when Britain feared invasion from France, during the War of the Second Coalition (1799-1802).

        A Sequel to Barrington's Voyage to New South Wales , comprising an interesting narrative of the Transactions and Behaviour of the Convicts

Octavo, laid paper uncut, with the 6 pp. 'Official Register of the Crimes, Trials and Executions'; a good tall copy in later half calf, spine banded and gilt, crimson morocco label. Barrington sequel, mostly sourced from Collins. A scarce Barrington title. This so-called Sequel drew most of its content from David Collins' Account of the English Settlement of New South Wales, the first volume of which had been published in 1798. 'The first chapter includes a brief continuation of "Barrington's" adventures with Yeariana and Palerino - the cross-cultural romance hinted at in the final chapter of the Voyage now blossomed into a tableau of domestic happiness… There is also some attempt to install "Barrington" as an active agent in certain episodes taken from Collins' narrative where events at Parramatta are described.' (Garvey, The Celebrated George Barrington, Hordern House, 2008) This was reprinted from an earlier Lowndes edition of 1800, but completely reset with a smaller typeface, tighter spacing, and with the omission of the chapter summary heads. Garvey's extensive bibliography of the Barrington books suggests that this is one of the more uncommon titles, listing only six copies in Australian holdings (including no fewer than three at the Mitchell Library).

The present work is the first published account of the two exploring expeditions that Mackenzie made on behalf of the North West Company as part of their attempt to break the Hudson Bay Company's stranglehold on the fur trade. The author was born in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland in 1764, was in North America in 1774, was employed as a clerk in the fur trade in 1779, and by 1787 he was a wintering partner in the Northwest Company posted to Fort Chipewyan on Lake Athabasca. Mackenzie set out on his first expedition on 3 June 1789, armed with information and maps provided by the fur trader Peter Pond. He had decided to follow a large river flowing west from Great Slave Lake in search of a Northwest passage to the Pacific. The expedition was partially successful: on July 13, Mackenzie and his party reached salt water, but it proved to be the Beaufort Sea rather than the Pacific After a further two years in the fur trade in Canada, Mackenzie returned to England in the autumn of 1791 in order to study navigation and astronomy: the first expedition had demonstrated to him that he needed more expertise in these areas. He returned to Canada in the spring of 1792 and made his way west to the newly-built Fort Fork, near the junction of the Peace and Smoky Rivers. In May, 1793, having spent the winter preparing Mackenzie left on what was to be his greatest journey: After a difficult passage by canoe and on foot through the Rockies, Mackenzie and his party arrived at the Pacific near Bella Coola, British Columbia on 22nd July 1793. Mackenzie returned to Grand Portage in 1794 and subsequently to Montreal where he acted as an agent for the North West Company until 1799, when he retired to England. His great achievement did not receive the wide acknowledgment it deserved until the present work was published, and his subsequent and equally important proposals drawing attention to the importance of the Pacific coast: in 1802 Mackenzie was knighted by George III, and he went on to serve as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1804 to 1808.         No. 9 Breaking the Ice

      Published by John Raphael Smith, London 1801 - A touching scene after Morland: 'a master of genre and animal painting, an artist worthy to be placed in the same rank as the best of those Dutch masters whom he studied as a boy' (DNB) This print is a wonderful example of the manner in which Morland perfectly conveys the hardships and beauties of country life, his depiction of a poor country family battling the hardships of winter shows the bitter side of the pastoral life with grace and sympathy. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. Morland was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. One such engraver was John Raphael Smith, who throughout his career translated many of Morland's paintings to print. Smith was a highly influential figure in the late eighteenth-century British art world, he quickly became an impresario of the print-publishing trade producing nearly 400 prints during his lifetime, 130 of which were of his own design. This beautiful print refelects both the talents of the engraver and the genius of the artist, in its sentiment and execution it demonstrates the best of English genre.         Le Perroquet Bouquet (Red-necked Amazon [Amazona arausiaca])]

      Paris 1801 - This print is from an apparently unrecorded issue of Levaillant's Perroquets published on large format paper (probably 'papier vélin colombier satiné'), with a scratch proof of the title and plate number, but otherwise avant-lettre. This issue is not recorded in any of the standard bibliographies. The Red-necked Amazon (or Amazona arausiaca) is an endangered species found in the wild only on the island of Dominica in the Caribbean, where it's local name is 'Jaco'. Levaillant saw a living specimen in Amsterdam, and noted (in error) that it was a native of Brazil, although recording Buffon's opinion that it was from Guiana. Jacques Barraband was the finest ornithological artist of his time. The son of a weaver at the Aubusson Factory, he is first mentioned as a pupil of Joseph Malaine (1745-1809), the eminent flower painter, and is known to have worked for both the Gobelin Factory and the porcelain factory of Sèvres. His most important work was undoubtedly the 300 or so drawings that he produced for François Levaillant's three great ornithological monographs, the greatest of which was the Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets (1801-1805).         Autograph Letter Signed to Henry Dundas, Lord Melville , discussing the northwest Pacific after his meeting with Sauer at the house of Sir Joseph Banks

      London: 12 January, 1801. Single sheet of wove paper, 265 x 445 mm., watermarked "JW", folded to letter-size with holograph manuscript to three pages; traces of original folds, later refolded to docket-size and with manuscript description in another hand, small tears around original seal (not present). "Last night at Sir Joseph Banks's house…" A very significant letter from the great cartographer Alexander Dalrymple, of especial interest regarding British and Russian ambitions in the northwest Pacific. Its opening line sets the scene wonderfully: 'Last night at Sir Joseph Banks's house, I saw a gentleman, Mr. Sauer, who is arrived within these 10 or 12 days from Russia…'. This must have been an exceptional meeting of Pacific Ocean experts, and further underlines Banks's abiding interest in the region. Certainly the letter also highlights Dalrymple's continuing research in his position as hydrographer to the Admiralty, while the fact that it is written to Henry Dundas, first Viscount Melville, then serving as the War Secretary under Pitt, also confirms the strategic importance of the work he was doing. Dalrymple gives a fascinating précis of his detailed conversation with Sauer, who had sailed as an officer on the expedition that left St Petersburg in 1785 under the command of Joseph Billings. On their lengthy expedition Billings, who had sailed with Captain Cook on the third voyage, even met up with a fellow Cook-alumnus, John Ledyard, in Yakutsk. Billings and Sauer made a second voyage in the northern Pacific in 1790. Most importantly, it was Sauer who wrote the important account of the Billings voyages, published not long after this meeting, in 1802. In the letter, Dalrymple sketches Sauer's valuable account of the Russian Fur Trade, noting that it has 'undergone a great change, by the present Emperor having established an American Company.' He comments that they are said to employ seven vessels of about 150 tons each, and includes military and hydrographic details of the base at Okotsk, giving this description of the American coast: 'very populous… they could collect 20,000 men in 24 hours; but that the NW part is the least populous many of the places named in the map having no existence and others being merely fishing huts… the Russians have 1200 men at Cook's River.' There is a good description of the warlike Tschutski, with the note that 'their country having no wood for Canoes they cross over to America & supply themselves by violence from their more peaceable neighbours and also make slaves of them.' The letter makes clear that Sauer was already planning his publication ('He proposes publishing his Voyage having all the Charts &c. but it is not written out'), and, reflecting Dalrymple's sense of the importance of the information, he urges Dundas to buy Sauer's papers 'for I suppose a small sum, as he would be entitled to the profits of Publication.' It seems that this transaction was never approved. Dalrymple's papers are chiefly in the British Library and the Public Records Office, although interestingly, his correspondence with Dundas is in the National Library of Scotland.

      A fine copy of the first book entirely dedicated to number theory. The work contains Legendre's discovery of the law of quadratic reciprocity, which Gauss referred to as the 'golden theorem' and for which he published six proofs in his <i>Disquisitiones arithmeticae</i> (1801).<br/><br/> &#10087;Norman 1325; Parkinson <i>Breakthroughs</i> 231. <br/><br/> "The theory of numbers in the eighteenth century remained a series of disconnected results. The most important works in the subject were Euler's <i>Anleitung zur Algebra</i> (1770) and Legendre's <i>Essai sur la théorie des nombres</i> (1798)." (Kline). "Legendre was one of the most prominent mathematicians of Europe in the 19th Century... His texts were very influential. In 1798 he published his <i>Theory of Numbers</i>, the first book devoted exclusively to number theory. It underwent several editions, but was soon to be superseded by Gauss' <i>Disquisitiones arithmeticae</i><br/><br/> "Many of Legendre's results were found independently by Gauss, and serious priority disputes arose between them. Legendre's proofs, moreover, left much to be desired, even by mid-18th-century standards. For example, he discovered the law of quadratic reciprocity, unaware of Euler's prior discovery, and gave a proof based on what he viewed as a self-evident fact, namely the existence of infinitely many primes in any arithmetic progression <i>an + b (n = 1, 2, 3, ...</i>, with <i>a</i> and <i>b</i> relatively prime). This was a very difficult result, proved subsequently by Dirichlet using deep methods of analysis. Legendre was chagrined when Gauss, who gave a rigorous proof, claimed the result as his own. Each leaf bears a vignette above the text of the fable followed by its moral lesson and below the text, a lovely calligraphic arabesque usually incorporating an animal. "By spring 1799 Haydn and Swieten were planning a second oratorio, The Seasons, with a libretto based on James Thomson&#146;s pastoral epic of 1726&#150;8; Haydn composed the music apparently from autumn 1799 to the end of 1800. He suffered a serious illness in winter 1800&#150;01, as the work neared completion, during which he again identified with his own oratorio. His pupil Sigismund Ritter von Neukomm reported: "Speaking of the penultimate aria, &#145;Behold, O weak and foolish man, Behold the picture of thy life&#146; &#133; he said: &#145;This aria refers to me!&#146; And in this wonderful masterpiece he really did speak entirely from his inmost soul, so much so that he became seriously ill while composing it, and &#133; the Lord &#133; allowed him to see &#145;his life&#146;s image and his open grave.&#146;" "The private première at the Schwarzenberg Palace took place on 24 April 1801, the first public production on 19 May. Although the initial reception of The Seasons was favourable &#150; Haydn wrote to Clementi that it had enjoyed &#145;unanimous approval&#146; and that &#145;many prefer it to The Creation, because of its greater variety&#146; &#150; critical opinion soon became mixed, owing in part to its perceived &#145;lower&#146; subject, in part to a growing aesthetic resistance to its many pictorialisms. Haydn himself contributed to both strands of criticism: he supposedly said to Francis II, &#145;In The Creation angels speak and tell of God, but in The Seasons only Simon speaks&#146; (Dies); and he indiscreetly criticized Swieten&#146;s croaking frogs (&#145;Frenchified trash&#146;) and the absurdity of a choral hymn to toil (Fleiss). Ami de Beaumarchais, l'écrivain français Paul Philippe Gudin de la Brenellerie (1738-1812) nourrissait une passion méconnue pour l'astronomie; on lui doit notamment la publication d'un "Tableau du système solaire" d'après le système de Laplace. Selon l'auteur, le présent poème "est peut-être le plus complet qu'on ait fait encore sur l'Astronomie, puisqu'il embrasse l'histoire de cette science, depuis les anciens Chaldéens jusqu'à nos jours, et l'état du ciel tel qu'il est en effet". Bel exemplaire provenant de la bibliothèque de l'astronome montalbanais Anne-Jean-Pascal-Chrysostome Duc de la Chapelle (1765-1814), qui s'était fait construire son propre observatoire privé et à qui l'on doit de nombreuses observations astronomiques insérées dans le périodique "Connaissance des temps".       . Blatt 30 aus der Folge "Kleidertracht in Hamburg" (1801-1806); zwei Männer und zwei Frauen zeigen die Helgoländer Tracht, wie sie um 1800 dort üblich war. Die beiden Frauen links im Bild tragen den altfriesischen Pai, einen roten, ärmellosen Miederrock mit gelber Kante; die Ärmel wurden gesondert angezogen, die Kopfbedeckung ist eine Kragenkapuze, die aus mit Pappe versteiftem Stoff besteht und je nach Wetterlage zurückgeschoben oder über den Kopf gezogen werden konnte. Die Männer tragen weit ausfallende Pumphosen, Stiefel, einen Wams und über den schulterlangen Haaren eine hohe topfartige Mütze. Das Blatt am Bildunterrand bezeichnet mit *Kleidertracht in Hamburg - Helgolander - 30*. Das Blatt gleichmäßig gebräunt, unter Passepartout und Glas gerahmt. UN DES PREMIERS EXPLORATEURS DES HAUTES-PYRÉNÉES : avec le développement du thermalisme au XIXe siècle, de nombreux poètes, peintres et écrivains viennent dans les Pyrénées, tombant sous leur charme. Avant eux, Louis François Élisabeth Ramond de Carbonnières fait figure de précurseur. D'origine alsacienne, le jeune homme proche du courant «Sturm und Drang» se passionne vite pour la haute montagne. En 1787, Ramond accompagne le cardinal de Rohan qui se rend aux eaux thermales de Barèges et en profite pour parcourir une grande partie des Pyrénées centrales. Passionné de botanique, il recense plus de huit cent espèces dont une fleur, la «ramondia», qui portera son nom. Enseignant ensuite les sciences naturelles à l'école centrale de Tarbes, il répertorie dans ses carnets plantes et minéraux. Étudiant les problèmes d'altimétrie, il fait de nombreux croquis de montagnes, de sommets. Une de ses promenades favorites est de grimper au pic du Midi afin de voir le «massif calcaire» du Marboré. En 1797, il monte une première expédition au mont Perdu par le lac Glacé. Cinq ans plus tard, le téméraire ascensionniste entreprend une autre expédition et atteint en 1802, pour la première fois, le sommet du mont Perdu. «Servis par un style admirable, les écrits pyrénéens de Ramond demeurent une pièce majeure des livres pyrénéistes» (Claude Dendaletche).
