[Hoboken Group XXI No. 3]. Die Jahreszeiten nach Thomson... Aufgeführt im National-Hof-Theater

Wien: Gedruckt mit v. Kurtzbek'schen Schriften. [1801]. Octavo. Sewn. 1f. (recto title, verso "Personen"), [3]-47, [i] (blank) pp. Text an adaptation by Gottfried van Swieten of a pastoral epic by James Thomson, 1726-1728. Very slightly worn; spine reinforced with contemporary paper; corners slightly turned; final leaf partially detached. A very nice, clean, wide-margined copy overall. . The rare original libretto issued for the first public performance of The Seasons on May 19, 1801. Robbins Landon: Chronicle and Works Vol. V p. 123 (locating one copy only, at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna). "By spring 1799 Haydn and Swieten were planning a second oratorio, The Seasons, with a libretto based on James Thomson’s pastoral epic of 1726–8; Haydn composed the music apparently from autumn 1799 to the end of 1800. He suffered a serious illness in winter 1800–01, as the work neared completion, during which he again identified with his own oratorio. His pupil Sigismund Ritter von Neukomm reported: "Speaking of the penultimate aria, ‘Behold, O weak and foolish man, Behold the picture of thy life’ … he said: ‘This aria refers to me!’ And in this wonderful masterpiece he really did speak entirely from his inmost soul, so much so that he became seriously ill while composing it, and … the Lord … allowed him to see ‘his life’s image and his open grave.’" "The private première at the Schwarzenberg Palace took place on 24 April 1801, the first public production on 19 May. Although the initial reception of The Seasons was favourable – Haydn wrote to Clementi that it had enjoyed ‘unanimous approval’ and that ‘many prefer it to The Creation, because of its greater variety’ – critical opinion soon became mixed, owing in part to its perceived ‘lower’ subject, in part to a growing aesthetic resistance to its many pictorialisms. Haydn himself contributed to both strands of criticism: he supposedly said to Francis II, ‘In The Creation angels speak and tell of God, but in The Seasons only Simon speaks’ (Dies); and he indiscreetly criticized Swieten’s croaking frogs (‘Frenchified trash’) and the absurdity of a choral hymn to toil (Fleiss). Nonetheless he maintained that it would join The Creation in assuring his lasting fame..." "... Notwithstanding its less exalted subject, The Seasons is compositionally more virtuoso than The Creation and offers greater variety of tone: Haydn’s pastoral is one of the final glories of a tradition that is more than ‘high’ enough."         L'Astronomie, Poëme en trois chants.

A Auxerre, de l'Imprimerie de Laurent Fournier. Se trouve à Paris, chez Rondonneau, an IX (1801). - in-8. 68pp.

Hudibras

London - Vernor and Hood, 1801. London - Vernor and Hood, 1801 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Samuel Butler's satirical poem about the English Civil War. With annotations and a preface by Zachary Grey. Containing seventeen engraved plates. Published only four years after Charles II had been restored to the throne and the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell being completely over, the poem found an appreciative audience. The satire is not balanced as Butler was fiercely royalist and only the parliamentarian side are singled out for ridicule. Butler also uses the work to parody some of the dreadful poetry of the time. The epic tells the story of Sir Hudibras, a knight errant who is described dramatically and with laudatory praise that is so thickly applied as to be absurd, and the conceited and arrogant person is visible beneath. He is praised for his knowledge of logic despite appearing stupid throughout, but it is his religious fervour which is mainly attacked. Complete in two volumes. Condition: Rebound in half-calf with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, though with some light rubbing. Two joints starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are quite bright, though with some scattered foxing and some light offsetting from the plates. Overall: VERY GOOD..

London: Printed by W. Bulmer and Co. Cleveland-Row, for the Author ..., 1801. London: Printed by W. Bulmer and Co. Cleveland-Row, for the Author .... Hardcover. B002K9PEOG 1801 first edition set 'Printed by W. Bulmer and Co. Cleveland-Row, for the Author' (London), two 6 1/4 x 10 inches tall hardbounds, marbled boards over gilt-lettered, black French Morocco spines, [4], 236; [4], 237-482 pp. plus one page of publisher's ads. Very slight rubbing to covers. Minor foxing and soiling to margins of title pages. Otherwise, a very good to near fine set - clean, bright and unmarked - of the first known published and single most important horror verse anthology in English. References: Ruff 8; Tinker 1496; Summers, p. 529. ~OOO~ Matthew Gregory Lewis (1775-1818) was an English novelist and dramatist, often referred to as 'Monk' Lewis, because of the success of his classic Gothic novel, 'The Monk' (1796). 'The Life and Correspondence of M. G. Lewis,' in two volumes, was published in 1839. Because of its lavish format, high publication price (in 1801, one guinea) and padding with commonplace ballads in volume two, Lewis critics nicknamed this compilation 'Tales of Plunder.' It was nonetheless well received, and blazed the way for the genre. Three ballads by Walter Scott (1771-1832) first appear here: 'The Fire-King,' 'Glenfinlas,' and 'Frederick and Alice' (a free translation from Goethe), as well as a revised version of 'The Wild Huntsman' (from Burger). Contributions by Robert Southey (1774 -1843) are 'The Old Woman of Berkeley,' 'Bishop Bruno,' 'Lord William,' 'The Painter of Florence,' 'Donica,' 'Cornelius Agrippa's Bloody Book,' and 'Rudiger.' . Very Good. 1801.
