BATAVIAN REPUBLIC - VOC].
- Not in Knuttel; Landwehr, VOC. Ad 1: Broadside concerning the prolongation of the VOC's charter on trade in the East Indies. The texct declares the prolongation of the company's charter with another year, until 31 December 1799. With the unification of the various Dutch companies trading with the East in 1602, the Dutch government granted the new VOC monopoly over the Asian trade, as well as the powers to build forts, maintain armies and conclude treaties. In 1796 the VOC was nationalized and granted a charter, valid until 1798, to finish off current affairs. The charter ended up to be prolonged for two more times, first until December 1799, as stated in this broadside and finally until December 1800.Ad 2: Broadside proclaiming the installation of a new, intermediary board of directors dealing with the Dutch colonies and possessions along the coast of Guinea and in America (the West Indies). It further informs that the former board is annulled, and that the new board, consisting of seven members, will reside at Amsterdam and will hold its first meeting on 1 April 1798.Both broadsides are headed with the emblem of the Batavian Republic, including a personification of the Dutch Maiden and a lion holding the Batavian flag, and the Dutch translation of liberty, equality and fraternity. Ad 1 with two small holes, not affecting the text and some spots. Both broadsides very slightly wrinkled and slightly frayed along the margins, but otherwise in very good condition.

Description: Separately published master print, published by J.R. Smith in London, in 1799. Our definition of master print is: a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters.Artists and Engravers: Engraved by J.R. Smith after G. Morland. John Raphael Smith (Derby 1752-1812) was an English painter and mostly mezzotint engraver. Among his best works are his reproductive mezzotints after Reynolds, as well as Morland. He was teacher to J.M.W. Turner and William Ward, among others. George Morland (1763-1804) was an English painter of animals and rustic scenes. He was born in London, third son of Henry Robert Morland. His father, artist, engraver and picture restorer. Morland's work in painting is characterised by the simple subjects he painted. He depicted the life he knew from his own experience. Morland worked closely with William and James Ward, and later married their sister Anne. Condition: Very good, given age. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully … [Click Below for Full Description]

Buisson et Charles Pougens ( libraire), An VIII (1799-1800), 3 vols. in-8°, [I] (4)nn pp + xvi pp + 408 pp ; [II] (4)nn pp + 446 pp ; [III] (8) nn pp + folding map + 407 pp + 9 large folding plates (complete), bound in three uniform half roan bindings with marbled paper covered boards, smooth spines with gilt titles, corners of bindings worn and with some paper loss, interior with some minor foxing and some sparse stains. Still a god copy. Provenance; loosely inserted is a holograph letter (dated 24 oct. 1950) from Prof. Jean Timmermans ( Université Libre de Bruxelles) to Monseigneur Van Waeyenberg , rector magnificus of the ''Katholieke Universiteit Leuven ''. This letter accompanied the books, given as a token of friendship, by Timmermans. He points out that on pp. 356 of volume I the author writes about Louvain university. Both figures were very much ideologically opposed in the belgian university landscape ; a staunch free mason against a conservative bishop of the Roman Catholic church.§. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PARK, Mungo.
London I. W. Bulmer for the Author II. Murray & 1815, 1799. First editions of both works. 2 volumes in 1, 4to. First work: xxviii, 372, xcii pp., engraved portrait frontispiece, three folding maps and charts, two botanical engraved plates and three copper-engraved plates after drawings by the author, 2 engraved plates of music; Second work: xx, 373pp., engraved folding map. Light toning to apppendix of Travels, contemporary half calf gilt, a very handsome example. Two of the most important and influential books dealing with the exploration of the interior of Africa. Mungo Park, a young Scottish doctor, made his first journey in 1795, in search of the Niger. He spent two years travelling deep into the interior of Africa and his book provides a fine and vivid narrative of his adventures and his coming to grips with civilisations and customs unimagined by this reserved and rather diffident man. The journey was sponsored by the African Association in the hope of solving the riddle of the Niger, no doubt enthused by Bruce's success on the other side of the continent. After the failure of four previous expeditions it sent out Park with instructions "to pass on to the River Niger either by way of Bambouk or by such other route as should be found most convenient and to ascertain the course and, if possible, the rise and termination of that river". Setting out from the Gambia, Park marched east to Bambuk, crossing the Faleme and the Senegal, and on the 20th of July 1796, he "saw with infinite pleasure the great object of my mission - the long sought-for, majestic Niger, glittering t … [Click Below for Full Description]

In London, in the concluding years of the eighteenth century, he was drawn into the group of philanthropists and reformers among whom William Wilberforce was the leading figure, and Sir Thomas Bernard, Treasurer of the Foundling Hospital, one of the most active members. The focus of their activities was the Society for Bettering the Condition and Increasing the Comforts of the Poor, and to this Society Rumford submitted his proposals for a new scientific institution in London, designed to improve the lot of the poor and the working classes by the application of science to useful purposes. It was decided to make an appeal for funds, Rumford's proposals were circulated, and the Count succeeded in interesting the President of the Royal Society, Sir Joseph Banks, who took the Chair at the early meetings and allowed them to be held at his house, 32 Soho Square. … [Click Below for Full Description]

King Louis XVI himself took a hand in drafting the plan and itinerary, a copy of which is in the Municipal Library at Rouen, France, and when La Pérouse was selected to lead the fleet gave him an audience before he sailed. In command of two ships, La Boussole and L`Astrolabe (Commandant de Langle), he left Brest on 1 August 1785 making for Brazil. Doubling Cape Horn he refitted in Chile, then sailed to the Sandwich Islands and thence to Alaska, where he turned south exploring and surveying the coast as far as California. After a short refit at Monterey, he sailed across the Pacific, discovered uncharted islands, and visited Macao and Manila. After six weeks reprovisioning and refreshing he left on 10 April 1787 to survey the coasts and territories north of Korea, which had been described and commented on by Christian missionaries. ROWLANDSON, Thomas (1756-1827) engraved by MERKE
London: Published by R. Ackermann's 101 Strand, 1799. Coloured aquatint. Early colour. Printed on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed to the image. A wonderful image from Thomas Rowlandson's satirical interpretation of the "Cries of London". The "Cries of London" was a re-occurring theme in English printmaking for over three centuries. These colourful prints form a visual record of London's "lower orders", the pedlars, charlatans, street hawkers, milkmaids, and grocers who made their living on the city streets. They give us a glimpse of a long forgotten London where tradesmen would advertise their wares with a musical shout or a melodic rhyme. Different versions of the "Cries" vary in tone from idealistic visions of happy street vendors to satirical caricatures. One of the most famous series of "London Cries" is the group of somewhat sentimental pictures executed by Francis Wheatley. Wheatley's series was immensely popular and enjoyed a long period of success in the English print shops. This popularity undoubtedly inspired Rowlandson to execute his satirical versions of the "Cries". In a set of eight prints, (number seven is missing and not recorded), Rowlandson created a group of witty images mimicking Wheatley's more earnest criers. Under his biting pen the "Cries" metamorphose into lascivious caricatures, Rowlandsonesque versions of London's street people. In this amusing image, which is number four in the series, Rowlandson gives a brick dust vendor, who puts his apish mug face to face with the pretty young maidservant … [Click Below for Full Description]
