CROKER Richard. Captain in the Late 99th Regiment of Foot.
Printed for the Author and Sold by J. Robson T. Payne Messrs. Cadell et al. London, 1799. First edition. SCARCE. viii, 316pp. The military travels of Croker presented in a series of letters a few years before the Peninsular Wars. The tone is very honest and engaging. In one town the locals decided that it would be fun to throw stones at the troups and only stopped their sport when the use of guns were threatened. Croker writes in detail about the food and wine and is also very observant of the interest the Spanish men pay to the English women that travel with the soldiers. Recently rebound in quarter maroon calf and marbled boards, original endpapers and half-title present. Some occ. light foxing, one page has a close short tear to margin, not affecting text. The pages are remarkably clean and fresh and the volume is very sound. Please contact us for photographs. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Philadelphia) Wharton, Robert
Philadelphia: Feb. 7, 1799. 1 p., pen and ink on paper, docketed on verso. Folio. A COLORFUL DESCRIPTION OF A "FISHTOWN" SAILOR. An entertaining affidavit of citizenship for a sailor from the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, now known as "Fishtown," which was home to a large number of German immigrants in the 18th century, who made their living shad fishing on the Delaware River. The document was signed just before Lawrence Shisler embarked on an ill-fated tour on the Ariel, a 10-gun merchant ship with a 30-man crew, that was taken by the French on her voyage home from Canton, China. Two sailors, as well as the ship's master, Jacob Coates, were killed in the ensuing fight with the privateers. Schisler evidently survived, as he is found on another affidavit of citizenship in 1807. Reading in part: "Before me Robert Wharton esquire mayor of the said city of Philadelphia personally appeared Lawrence Schisler aged twenty nine years or there abouts, born in Kensington in the state of Pennsylvania five feet seven inches and three quarters of an inch high, dark brown hair having a scar on his left cheek another on the extremity of one of his left hand fingers, the nail being shot off, having sundry mark in indian ink, to wit RC-CE.-I.S. a heart, a cross and anchor (*) &ca on the forearm of his left hand... has now entered on board of the ship Ariel commanded by Jacob Coates. (*As a postscript) a female figure on his right Arm a Male & Female figure on his Breast in India Ink" Also signed by Lawrence Schisler, and Martin Worknot, who attested that he had known Schisler sinc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Reis-Kaart van het Britsche Gezantschap van Zhe-Hol in Tartarye over Peking Naar Hang-Choe-Foe in China (Tartary / China coastline / Shandong Province / Beijing / Peking / Yangtzee River / Yellow Sea / ) Issued Amsterdam, 1799-1800 by J. Allart. Excellent and very uncommon late 18th-turn of the 19th century antique engraved Dutch map of the Chinese coast based upon English surveys under Macartney. Map identifies a number of pagodas and temples as well as a host of engraved comments. Numerous early phonetic place names, various engraved notes & comments in Dutch, all of fascinating modern historical interest. Key lower left side showing population ranges of size as they relate to the symbols and names used. Peking (Beijing- Tong-Choe-Foe) can be seen near the top left of the map. Yang-Choe-Foe, Tsin-Jin-Choe- Sjang-Tung, Pe-Che are a few of the names shown. Yellow Sea lower right corner, nautical ship tracks of voyage shown with anchorage spot. Distance scales below title given in English & Chinese miles. A very scarce/ rare map. Almost certainly printed in an edition under 1000 examples, of which perhaps 5-10% survive as examples ever potentially obtainable in a lifetime. The source is obscure and rare, clean fresh examples such as this seldom encountered. In near VG or better condition, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, but overall a superior visual example. Original fold-lines and lower left margin trimmed narrow to neat line as issued to facilitate folding, the top portion being an inset tab. [Sheridan, Richard Brinsley]
Dublin: J. Ewling, n.d. [?1799]. Later piracy. vi, 93, [3] pp. 8vo. This Dublin piracy was long thought to be the first edition, and is recorded as such by Wise and Williams. Another Dublin piracy, printed in 1780 is now acknowledged as the first (cf. Nettleton & Case, British Dramatists, p. 941 & Rothschild 1845). R. Compten Rhodes, in his edition of the Plays and Poems of Sheridan ascribes a date of circa 1799 based on the use of the short "s" (cf. Rhodes, R.C. Plays & Poems of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, II, p. 171). The Ewling imprint is fictitious, as is, perhaps, the location of the printing. Sheridan's masterpiece was first performed 8 May 1777 on Drury Lane, running for twenty nights, and revived the next season for a further sixty-five performances. No authorized edition was printed in Sheridan's lifetime. This edition differs considerably from the author's manuscript and was possibly adapted from a performance. [Bound with:] OTWAY, Thomas. Augusta (ma Venezia) Senza Editore ( ma Fontana) 1799 Due volumi in 4° Pagine 1 carta bianca + 288 + 1 carta bianca + 1 carta bianca + 308 + 1 carta bianca. Legatura coeva in brossura marmorizzata. Titolo al dorso su tassello. Piccola mancanza all'angolo esterno delle ultime 2 carte del secondo volume e del piatto posteriore. Ottima copia in barbe. Rara prima edizione.
