The work was resumed through the interest of the botanist J.-B.-.A. Guillemin (1796-1862), who issued, in quarto edition, another three fascicles (nos.29-31 [with a further 19 plates]). A thirty-second fascicle of five plates remains unpublished. The first major botanical work to rely on colour-printed plates using the technique of stipple-engraving, an art refined by Redoute which he had learned from Francesco Bartolozzi while visiting England with French botanist C.-L. l'Hriter de Brutelle (1746-1800). It has been claimed that Redoute introduced the art to France. Certainly the tec … [Click Below for Full Description]

1799 - Untitled (Solar System / Celestial Spheres / Brahean System- Copernican System / Saturn and His 5 Moons/ etc.) Issued Philadelphia, 1799 by Francis & Bailey for Scott. Anon. engraver. Rare late-18th century engraved small near pocket sized celestial chart. Of particular interest from a thematic perspective, being among the earliest American produced Celestial engraved plates. In near VG or better condition, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, small light age staining in right wide blank margin, but overall a superior visual example. Of note for the contrasting systems as well as the mention of four specific comets, one dating 1661, and one even seemingly engraved "appear (ed?) in 1796", meaning in the future. Possibly worthy of further investigation which we do not have time for. Entirely unsophisticated and relatively fresh example; clear plate impression upon a larger sheet resulting in a jumbo wide right blank margin vs. the narrow incut ll margin incut slightly, done deliberately to facilitate folding within the rare small gazetteer. Little known and rare 18th century, early and entirely American produced celestial image. Original fold line (s) as issued. Sheet measures c. 10" x 8" Engraved area measures c. 8" x 7" [R12909]not in Wheat & Brun, Maps & Charts Published in America Before 1800 only because they curiously did not include Celestial images as being a chart. Cary began his work as an engraver, cartographer, and globe maker in 1776 with his New and Correct English Atlas. This important atlas represented a new phase in cartography where accuracy and detail rose in prominence over the decorative embellishments of the 18th century. Plate : 'The First of September, Morning'. English country life interior scene, a stable, with men, dogs and horses; a man tying a collar on a dog, his gun resting against the wall, a horse behind him, another tethered outside, and a third standing ready with a man in a smock leading it by the bridle. Map of the Netherlands on the rear. Stipple engraving on a vellin type paper. Hand colouring heightened with arabic gum. Description: This original antique print was published in London, dated 1799. A very curious print, as it is printed on a sheet which carries the Maaskamp (Amsterdam, ca. 1800) map of the Netherlands on the rear. This is doubly odd, as the map was printed in Amsterdam, but the mezzotint by Ward in London.Artists and Engravers: This plate engraved by W. Ward after G. Morland.
