London T. Cadell. First edition, 8vo., xvi, 277pp., 2 pages of advertisments at end, 5 engraved plates and a folding map, contemporary half calf, marbled boards, rebacked preserving spine, occasional light browning, an excellent copy. "Jackson went to India on private business, visiting Ceylon and the Malabar coast while there. He travelled out by ship but took the overland route home. On 4 May 1797 he left Bombay by country ship for Basrah. He proceeded via the Euphrates and Tigris to Baghdad, and thence travelled through Kurdistan, Armorica, Anatolia, Bulgaria, Wallachia, and Transylvania, reaching Hamburg on 28 October of the same year. Under the title Journey from India towards England (1799) he published an account of his travels in which he showed that the use of the route he followed was practicable all the year round. Jackson's narrative of his journey is straightforward in style, with daily entries describing his party's progress, and observations on the people and places they encountered. Although he advocated greater use of the overland route, he conceded that it was only for the physically hardy, and his description made it clear that the route was potentially dangerous. He advised on how to seek help from the local people and how to travel inconspicuously. Jackson showed himself both curious and flexible in adopting local habits of dress, of wearing beard and moustache, and of eating, drinking, and smoking. The reviewer in the Gentleman's Magazine described the Journey warmly as 'a very useful and instructive guide' (1st ser, 70, 1800, 237–9)." (ODNB). [Attribu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Genlis, Madame De.
Hambourg: Chez Pierre Chateauneuf, Librarie and Londres: Chez L'Homme, Libraire. 1799. First edition, Dedicated to Lady Edward Fitz-Gerald, unadopted daughter (actually natural) married to Lord Edward Fitz-Gerald, 8vo., pp: xvi,[1]-144, with an engraved frontispiece & folding sheet of music at end, light foxing & browning to the sheet music & endpapers, full mottled calf, with gilt rule to boards, spine with red leather title label, lightly worn, rubbed & marked, otherwise sound & very good condition. The rare first issue of this collection of poems loosely derived from botanical portraits. The work was written and published during Mme de Genlis' exile in Hamburg (although she was sympathetic to the revolution, and was later to return to France with the favour of Napoleon). She was an accomplished educationalist and botanist. Madame de Genlis was born of a noble Burgundian family, at the chateau of Champercy in Issy-l'Eveque, Saone-et-Loire. In 1789 Madame de Genlis showed herself favourable to the French Revolution, but the fall of the Girondins in 1793 compelled her to take refuge in Switzerland along with her pupil Mademoiselle d'Orleans. In 1794 Madame de Genlis fixed her residence at Berlin, but having been expelled by the orders of Frederick William II of Prussia, she afterwards settled in Hamburg, where she supported herself for some years by writing and painting. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Genlis, 1746-1830, was a French author and educator who was the boyhood tutor of King Louis Philippe I. She was well-known for her innovative education techniques including practical botany walks, using lantern slides during lessons, and putting on morality plays. During her lifetime she wrote nearly 80 works, many for children and mostly of a moral nature. According to one contemporary reviewer, Rash Vows is 'rather a whimsical performance, and has less ingenuity of contrivance , than usually distinguishes the work of this author' (The British Critic and Quarterly Theological Review, vol. 14, 1799). In the 'Dedicatory Epistle' of the novel, Genlis writes that this novel is 'the most moral Romance in our language; perhaps the only one that young people, and even those whose education is far advanced, may be permitted to read'. Interestingly, Rash Vows is addressed to Lady Edward Fitzgerald and Mrs Henrietta Matthieson. Lady Edward - known as Pamela - was described as Genlis&a … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROSSES (Charles de)
Paris, Ponthieu, An VII (1799). - 3 tomes en 1 volume in-8. (2ff.blancs). VIII. 415pp. + 2ff. 455pp. + 2ff. 400pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

By 1766 the foundry had moved to London, with Moore retiring in 1776 and Pine shortly after. In 1782 Fry took his sons Edmund (especially interested in exotic founts) and Henry into partnership, and made considerable purchases of Greeks and Orientals at the sale of James' foundry. In 1829 the foundry was acquired by William Thorowgood. A very good copy of this extremely rare specimen. Following an introduction, the specimens proceed from Ten line Pica to Diamond: 'the smallest Letter in the World. It gets in considerably more than the famous Dutch Diamond.' [Click Below for Full Description]

Imprimerie de Munier, chez Lepetit Jeune, 1799. 3 volumi in 8vo (211x132 mm). vii, [5]-321, [3] p., [1] grande cartina ripiegata del Canada e [6] tavole; [4], 344 p. e [4] tavole; [4], 294 p. [mancante l'ultima carta, bianca] e [2] tavole.
