Mavor, William Fordyce (Ed)
London: John Walker, 1799. London: John Walker. Fair with no dust jacket. 1799. Hardcover. MISSING engraved frontispiece, page 271/272 and colored bird plate that followed, the colored and plain Tiger plates from number V, and the fold-out portion of chart by page 324, stitched cloth covering over leather binding, no flyleaves, tone and random foxing, 1802 gift inscription on reverse of title page, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover. ; Volume I containing first six issues of this influential children's periodical that only lasted for a year (2 volumes). "The Young Gentleman's and Lady's Magazine was, in many ways, a more ambitious and sophisticated juvenile publication than its predecessors. Edited by William Fordyce Mavor, the twelve monthly numbers averaged between sixty-eight and eighty-four pages. Pitched to a genteel audience, it was, as the advertisements claimed, "elegant" and "tasteful" in appearance and content, printed on "Fine Paper" with engravings by "Artists of the first Celebrity." It included interesting and unique features, such as the inclusion each month of "a beautiful coloured Plate from Nature ... with a plain duplicate, intended as an Exercise for the juvenile Pencil", and the "Review of School and Juvenile Publications", a feature that anticipated Mrs Trimmer's attempt to review children's books and survey the history of the genre in ... The Guardian Of Education (1802-1806)." - Janis Dawson; Writing for the Young in the Age of Revolution and Reaction: William Fordyce Mavor and "The Young Gentleman's" and "Lady's Magazine" … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chanlaire, Pierre Gregoire & Mentelle, Edme
Paris, Chanlaire & Mentelle, 1798. Original outline colour. Dissected and laid on linen in two sections, 880 x 940 mm & 660 x 940 mm. A two-sheet wall map showing Prussia, Turkey, Egypt and Abyssinia in the west, and the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan, Persia, Arabia and Somalia in the east. Two inset maps show the routes from Siré to Gondar and from Gondar to the sources of the Nile. According to the inscription, the map is based on that of "the late J. B. Laborde" (Jean-Benjamin de Laborde [1734-94], a traveller and musician), with amendments; however we have been unable to trace a map of the region by him. - The vast map was published to satisfy French interest when their seemingly-unstoppable General Bonaparte turned his attention to the conquest of Egypt in 1798. Napoleon had captured Malta en route to Egypt, and the oval title vignette shows him overseeing the burial of the French dead under Pompey's Pillar after the capture of the important port city of Alexandria (July 1798). - After the defeat of the Mameluk army at the Battle of the Pyramids it was Napoleon's intention to subdue the rest of the Ottoman Empire before moving to threaten British interests in India. However, as the political situation in Paris was deteriorating, Napoleon decided to leave his army in Egypt in 1799, returning to France to become First Consul. His army was less fortunate, surrendering to the British at Alexandria in 1801. - This map is very scarce: the French citizens' interest in maps of the Orient evaporated as quickly as Napoleon's.

Smith, Adam
John Walker, London 1799 - MISSING engraved frontispiece, page 271/272 and colored bird plate that followed, the colored and plain Tiger plates from number V, and the fold-out portion of chart by page 324, stitched cloth covering over leather binding, no flyleaves, tone and random foxing, 1802 gift inscription on reverse of title page, otherwise light wear. Pitched to a genteel audience, it was, as the advertisements claimed, "elegant" and "tasteful" in appearance and content, printed on "Fine Paper" with engravings by "Artists of the first Celebrity." It included interesting and unique features, such as the inclusion each month of "a beautiful coloured Plate from Nature . with a plain duplicate, intended as an Exercise for the juvenile Pencil", and the "Review of School and Juvenile Publications", a feature that anticipated Mrs Trimmer's attempt to review children's books and survey the history of the genre in . The Guardian Of Education (1802-1806)." - Janis Dawson; Writing for the Young in the Age of Revolution and Reaction: William Fordyce Mavor and "The Young Gentleman's" and "Lady's Magazine" (1799-1800); Victorian Periodicals Review, Vol. 34, No. 1 (Spring, 2001), page 16. Gbrsp., R. von Bd. 4 angebrochen, Seiten leicht gebräunt, etw. stockfleckig. - Signature of former owner on endpapers, cover with signs of use, pages slightly browned, some foxing. Zwischen 1747 und 1755 schrieb er an seinem wohl bekanntesten Werk "A Dictionary of the English Language".

Johnson, Richard (compiler)
Worcester: Thomas, Isaiah, 1799. 16mo. (72)pp. First American edition. With full-page woodcut frontispiece and numerous small head- and tailpieces. The American edition adds a new Preface, which invites "all the Masters and Misses of the great town of Boston, and of all cities and Coutry towns under the direction of His Excellency John Adams, Esq., to come and smell at my Flower Basket." A compilation of poems, mainly from Pope and Gay, for more advanced young readers. CARY, J&W.
London: J&W dated 1799 and 1815 (respectively) Globes on Regency mahogany stands. Height overall 48 in.; Diameter overall 27 1/2 in.; Diameter of Globes 21 in. The Cary family firm of globe-makers was founded in the late eighteenth century by John Cary (1755-1835). Alongside his partner and brother, William, a specialist in scientific instruments, J&W Cary produced some of the greatest late Georgian globes of its time. The brothers swiftly became one of the leading London globe-makers along with the family firms of Newton and Bardin. J&W Cary's first globes were published in 1791 and they were soon producing globes at four different diameters. The year 1816 saw the introduction of 18 inch glodes to thir range. These globes are a critical addition to any collector of American exploration as they reflect information from Lewis & Clark, Pike, Nuttal, Long and Elliot. The Cary firm was continued by sons George and John Cary Sr. in the Regency period. In the mid 19th Century, the plates were passed to G.F. Cruchley, a map seller who continued to produce globes under the Cary name. Together with the firms of Newton and Bardin, globes made by the Cary family accounted for the majority of globes produced in England during the early 19th Century. They used excellent quality paper and printing techniques so their globes often survive in nice condition. When John snr. died in 1835 the company was run by Henry Gould, although it retained the trading name of William Cary until 1890, the Post Office directory recording Cary & Co. at 7 Pall Mall in 1892, and then Cary, Porter & Co. at th … [Click Below for Full Description]
