[Click Below for Full Description]

Salomon Gessner,
Paris, Antoine-Augustin Renouard, an VII-1799. 4 volumes in-8, XII-319p, 282p, 264p & 295p. Condition: Very Good. In - 4, 8 pages in Russian, entirely calligraphiées and illustrated by Vasnetsov, published on the occasion of the centenary of Pushkin (1799-1837), this plate with a poem by the great Russian writer, recounts the story of Oleg the wise. To escape the prediction of a mage informing him that his death would come from his horse, Oleg abandons his mount and hand cover of glory to war. Back he learned the death of his horse. Cursing the sage and his false prediction, he finds near the river where lie the bones of the beast, from which comes a snake who stings Oleg... Then draw published in Moscow comprising 4 scenes dating back to 1892 and 1899. Vasnetov, Russian Illustrator very famous (in the same way as Bilibine) is part of this current based on interest in the national tradition and folklore. He devoted himself to the subjects of the old Russia, because for him, it is the only way to 'make the Russian painting his true identity'; foxing, small gaps to the folds, rare plate.

BARTHÉLEMY (Jean-Jacques)
(1799) Escoffier, Mouvement romantique, 99 (ex. sur papier ordinaire). Brunet I, 674. [Click Below for Full Description]

BROSSES (Charles de)
Paris, Ponthieu, An VII (1799). 3 tomes en 1 volume in-8. (2ff.blancs). VIII. 415pp. + 2ff. 455pp. + 2ff. 400pp. [Click Below for Full Description]

AUCLER (Gabriel-Andr?);
[Click Below for Full Description]

The origin of Bardins globes is thought to be traceable to the early eighteenth century globes of John Senex. 15 years after Senexs death, the copper plates for his globe gores were sold to James Ferguson.In 1757, Ferguson transferred his globe trade, including his Senex globe gores, to the scientific instrument maker and lecturer Benjamin Martin (1704-1782). J.B. Fournier, P.N.F. Didot, Paris. Tall 8vo. 5 vols. This copy dated "an septieme [1799]." Vol. I. pp. 435, [1 blank] Vol. II. pp. 410, [2 blank] Vol. III. pp. [4], 365, [2 blank] Vol. IV. pp. [4], 352 Vol. V. pp. [6], 352. Volumes I-III contain frontispiece engravings. Volume I contains an additional engraving opposite p. 74. Bound in period straight grained morocco binding – blind stamped and gilt. All edges gilt. The interiors are generally clean with only mild scattered foxing – a bit heavier in volume I. Small inscription on verso of fly-leaf in first volume. This edition is based on Lenglet Dufresnoy’s 1735 edition. The "Roman de la Rose" was one of the most important Medieval French poems. The work is divided into two sections. The first, written by Guillaume de Lorris in the early to mid 13th century, is an allegorical dream addressing the Art of Love. The second, written in the late 13th or early 14th century by Jean de Meung continues the poem in a different vein, turning the work into a satire and a commentary on contemporary society. The poem contains long digressions in which an encyclopedic mass of information on various topics is set forth including "satires on women, attacks on the magistrates, the hereditary nobility, and the mendicant friars, disquisitions on the origin of society and of royal power, on property, pauperism, and marriage, on the relations of nature and art, on hallucinations and sorcery and on the physical sciences." I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I can provide a link to many more photos. Just ask! 1799-1800 1st ed Isaac Weld Travels US & Canada Illustrated SLAVERY Indians In 1795 Isaac Weld sailed to North America from his home in Ireland where he set out to visit some of the most famous landmarks in the United States. While touring the sites became an important focus for his book, he also was searching for locations that would be suitable for Irish immigrants. According to the ODNB, Weld was "often guided by Indians in his explorations of the vast forests and great rivers. 'His descriptions were influential because they were relatively early and were long included in compilations of travelers' reports on the United States, despite his general lack of sympathy with the American patriots." Howes even supports this notion by stating that Weld "thought Canada preferable to the States." Weld was also critical of American slavery. In 'Travels' he is quoted - "..there will be an end to slavery in the United States...[as] negroes will not remain deaf to the inviting call of liberty forever." and Americans in general "civility cannot be purchased from them on any terms; they seem to think that it is incompatible with freedom...". On Washington, DC, he wrote "If the affairs of the United States go on as rapidly as they have done, it will become the grand emporium of the West, and rival in magnitude and splendor the cities of the whole world." This 1800 edition was the first French printing of Weld's travels in North America and is illustrated with fine, full-page engravings of his encou … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hill, on front pastedown and repeated on gutter margin of page 25. An attractive copy in a nice contemporary binding. Hannah Adams (1755-1831), born in Medfield, MA, was the first American woman who sought to make her living by writing. She published her first book, AN ALPHABETICAL COMPENDIUM OF VARIOUS SECTS in 1784 which saw several printings in the US and England and a second edition. Adams' MEMOIR (1832) testifies to the difficulty of female authorship during her time. This work, A SUMMARY HISTORY OF NEW-ENGLAND, in particular was the cause of a controversy with two male authors. She followed this book with THE HISTORY OF THE JEWS (1812), and LETTERS ON THE GOSPELS, as well as a posthumously published autobiography. These titles testify to her tenacity and scholarship, which was highly regarded in her day. Thomas A. Hill (1773-1864), the original owner of this book, was among the first lawyers to practice in Bangor Maine. His home, in the Greek Revival style, designed by Richard Upjohn, is now the home of the Bangor Historical Society Museum. NAW I, pp. 9-10. AMERICAN WOMEN WRITERS, pp. 12-13. La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt, François
Paris, 1799. Eight volumes. Three folding maps, nine folding tables. Uniformly bound to style in three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Unobtrusive old blindstamps on each title. Scattered foxing. The author comments extensively on agriculture. A later southern tour, recounted in the sixth volume, took him around Maryland and to the site of the future capitol of Washington. The seventh volume describes travels in New Jersey and his stay in New York, while the last volume offers general discussions of law, culture, etc. Clark refutes judgmen … [Click Below for Full Description]
