Asia and its islands, according to D'Anville... an exact delineation of all the discoveries made in the eastern parts by the English under Captain Cook, Vancouver & Peyrouse

London: Laurie & Whittle, 1799. Large engraved handcoloured map, comprising three conjoined sheets measuring 1440 x 1210 mm. in total; excellent condition, framed. Large and impressive wall map of Asia and New Holland printed by the famous partnership of Laurie and Whittle. The map has good Australian detail, including two inset vignette maps, one of King George III Sound, based on Vancouver's discoveries a few years earlier, and the other of the south-eastern tip of Tasmania also informed by recent discoveries. As well as Asia, the map shows the East Indies, Australia and the north-west Pacific in excellent detail, based on the observations of the navigators at the end of the eighteenth century. The second of the two inset maps is captioned "Discoveries Made by the Ship Duke in the South Extremity of New Holland in 1791". Although the date of 1791 is incorrect, the detail is clearly based on the survey by East India Company officer Sir John Hayes who sailed the Duke of Clarence from Calcutta in February 1793 on a speculative venture to New Guinea. Adverse weather rendered a direct journey impossible, accordingly Hayes sailed around the south of New Holland and charted the south-eastern portion of Van Diemen's Land from late April to early June of the same year. Hayes was unaware that the region had been charted by d'Entrecasteaux shortly beforehand and many of his geographical place names were trumped by the French (for example, on this map present day Bruny Island is named William Pitt's Island). As the full title indicates, this map is draws upon a range of sources, including the famous Pacific navigators Cook, Vancouver and La Pérouse as well as the work of Jean Baptiste d'Anville, justly famous for his magisterial 1737 Nouvel Atlas de la Chine, the first scientific cartographical survey of China. At the forefront of a new generation of objective cartographers, d'Anville's maps were relatively spare in the use of ornament. More significantly, unknown areas were intentionally left blank, rather than being filled with conjectured geographical fancies and other fabulous creations. His contribution to the science of cartography was well appreciated, and in 1775 d'Anville was appointed sole geographer to the Académie des Sciences and a royal appointment soon followed. The collaboration of Robert Laurie and James Whittle was one of the most innovative and commercially successful publishing enterprises of later-eighteenth century London. Laurie and Whittle had a well established reputation for good maps and navigational aids for East Asia and the Pacific, founded in part on their landmark Oriental Navigator of 1794-1797. Notably, Laurie and Whittle were not just map-makers but also printed a range of prints and scenic views, some of which concern the history of New South Wales (such as the ghoulish transportation engraving captioned "Black-Eyed Sue, and Sweet Poll of Plymouth, Taking leave of their Lovers who are going to Botany Bay" and dated 1794). Robert Laurie retired in 1812 and the business was continued by his son, so carrying the famous partnership of Laurie and Whittle into two generations. The second generation published a collection of views in 1814 that included three Australian views - two of Sydney and one of Parramatta - based on original watercolours by the convict artist John Eyre.

LAW OF THE UNITED STATES. BY AUTHORITY. FIFTH CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES...AN ACT, FURTHER TO SUSPEND THE COMMERCIAL INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND FRANCE, AND THE DEPENDENCIES THEREOF [caption title]

[Philadelphia, 1799. [1]p. on a single folio sheet, text printed in three columns. Docketed in ink on the verso. Three horizontal folds. Some light edgewear, small separations at the edges of the folds, not affecting text. Very good. Rare congressional act extending the suspension of trade with France during the so-called "Quasi-War" of the late 1790s, and adding a provision allowing the U.S. Navy to inspect and seize American ships that are violating the embargo. This act was approved Feb. 9, 1799, and extends the provisions of the law first approved June 13, 1798. It is signed in type at the conclusion by President Adams, Vice-President Jefferson, and Speaker of the House Jonathan Dayton. The Quasi-War was an undeclared conflict between the United States and France during the Adams administration in the late 1790s, manifested mostly in naval engagements between the two nations. The war was the outgrowth of deteriorating Franco-American relations, which had been weakened earlier in the decade by the "Genet Affair" and the "XYZ Affair," and it wreaked havoc on commerce between the two nations. One of the main weapons wielded by Adams was to ban American commerce from France and French dependencies, accomplished by the congressional act of 1798 and extended by the present law. The law forbids American ships from trading with France or with French dependencies, including in the West Indies, and goes on to bar French commerce and French ships from American ports. Significantly, this act goes beyond the provisions of the 1798 law by permitting United States navy vessels to inspect and potentially seize American vessels that have traded with France or with French dependencies. This broadside format is unusual for the printing of a law, and indicates that it was meant to be displayed in ports and customs officers for the attention of ships masters who may have been unaware of the embargo law or willfully violating it. ESTC locates only three copies, at Oxford, the British National Archives, and the American Antiquarian Society. Rare. EVANS 36522. ESTC W42364. OCLC 80514531.

Atlante solo (atlas only) In - 4° (289x220mm), legatura coeva m. pelle marrone marmorizzata e angoli con dorso adorno di tassello in pelle color arancio con titolo in oro disposto verticalmente. Piatti cartonati in marmorizzatura gialla e nera. Qualche ininfluente fioritura. Ottimo esemplare. Atlante iconografico facente seguito alla prima traduzione francese di "Narrative of a five years' expedition against the revolted Negroes of Surinam: in Guiana on the wild coast of South America from the years 1772 to 1777" (Londra, 1796), importantissimo resoconto settecentesco su territori ancora relativamente poco noti da parte degli europei. Cfr. Sabin, 91083. Palau, 322171. Brunet, V, 527. Henry in Michaud, Biogr.

Rarissima. Bibliografia: Valerio, Società, Uomini . . ., Firenze 1993, p. 190/2; Terre di Langobardia p. 178, 83. Dim.1480x875. Map of Northern Italy and of the Alps, from Geneve to the gulf of Quarnero, from Florence to Austrian Tyrol. It is an enlargement and update of the map of Lombardia, published by Rizzi Zannoni in 1795. The map was commissioned by Ferdinando IV in 1799; it was realized in a 1:460.000 scale and engraved in 1800 by Giuseppe Guerra. The Neapolitan court had joined the alliance against France both with the army and with the realization of geographic maps which depicted military plans and the defence of the Italian borders. The Eastern sheet, depicting Istria and Quarnero, is a real novelty for the author had the chance to use a lot of unpublished cartographic data, deriving both from personal and direct observation, realized in 1778, and from the manuscripts he received from the geologist Alberto Fortis as a gift (Valerio, Società, Uomini, pp. 190 - 192). The mountains have been drawn by the painter Alessandro D'Anna; though he had never visited those places, he was able to depict the Alps with great skills. The map is decorated by a great Greek fret on a dark background, respecting the schemes and the forms of the paintings recently discovered in Pompei and Ercolano. The map remained valid for more than ten years; then new and direct research and measurements were realized by Italian and French geographers for the Deposito della Guerra in Milan. Very exceptional map, even more rare to be found in five sheets. Copper engraving, divided in 43 sections and laid on contemporary canvas, contained in a contemporary case, in excellent condition. Example sold by the bookshop Artaria in Vienna. Extremely rare. Dim. 1480x875. Valerio, Società, Uomini . . ., Firenze 1993, p. 190/2; Terre di Langobardia p. 178, 83. Napoli Naples

An inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations

London, Printed for A. Strahan, and T. Cadell jun. and W. Davies, 1799-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. 3 Volume set. xii, 499; viii, 518,[v]; viii, 465, [xlix]pp., 1p. ads. Bound in contemporary tree calf. Gilt spine. Restoration work to hinges and spines. New spine labels. Marbled endpapers. Good binding and cover. Upper corner of Vol. I initial title page excised, name scratched out to title pages, Toning to pages, otherwise internally very good. <br> Adam Smith "spent ten years in the writing and perfecting of this work, the first edition selling out within six months. It had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few works in its field to have achieved such an exhaulted status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances that prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry". (ODNB). "The history of economic theory up to the end of the nineteenth century consists of two parts: the mercantilist phase which was based not so much on a doctrine as on a system of practice which grew out of social conditions; and the second phase which saw the development of the theory that the individual had the right to be unimpeded in the exercise of economic activity. While it cannot be said that Smith invented the latter theory.his work is the first major expression of it. He begins with the thought that labour is the source from which a nation derives what is necessary to it. The improvement of the division of labour is the measure of productivity and in it lies the human propensity to barter and exchange.Labour represents the three essential elements-wages, profit and rent-and these three also constitute income. From the working of the economy, Smith passes to its matter -'stock'- which encompasses all that man owns either for his own consumption or for the return which it brings him. The Wealth of Nations ends with a history of economic development, a definitive onslaught on the mercantile system, and some prophetic speculations on the limits of economic control. The Wealth of Nations is not a system, but as a provisional analysis it is complete convincing. The certainty of its criticism and its grasp of human nature have made it the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM).

        Arte Pirotecnia.

[Italy, late 18th century]. - Large 4to (270 x 195 mm). 36 ff. With 72 very interesting pen-and-ink drawings, partly coloured in brown, yellow and reddish washes. Contemporary marbled boards. In custom-made cloth portfolio. Spectacularly illustrated manuscript describing and illustrating many moveable and rotating pyrotechnical units and machines, including rockets. The title-page, bearing the name of a former owner (Valentino Vieri, who probably also added some probationes pennae), is followed by a description of the first 62 coloured drawings, beginning with the "Giuoco della Luna e Sole" (games of moon and sun), including all sorts of revolving, spouting, exploding and firing units, rockets, and other gadgets: On fol. 20r three objects are illuminated: an aloe vase, a tree, and a coat of arms, inscribed "Dini". Fols. 20v-23r show full-page installations, including a "Colona Trionfante" with a winged angel on top, a Lion of St. Mark, the symbol of the free Republic of Venice, holding an open book with his right paw (displaying the text "Pax tibi Marce Evangelista meus"), an oval on top of a balustrade, bearing the text "W. Gesu Giuseppe e Maria", a "Piramicia Egiziana", and a cupola with lanterns and fire pots. Fols. 23v-25r contains two double-page war scenes: the first, a fortified castle by a coast, with a vessel and a galley at sea; the second, a fortified tower and an army camp with tents opposite, with symbols of war and military equipment in the foreground. The final fols. 25v-36v contain indexes and instructions for fireworks: (1) "Indice delli Giuochi di Fuocho" (the various units and rockets; fols. 25v-26v); (2) "Regole Generali": 84 numbered instructions for construction and operation of fireworks (fols. 27r-35r); (3) "Indice delle Misture" (fols. 35v-36r); and "Catalogo de Generi ed Utensili" (fol. 36v). - There may be a connection between this manuscript and the Papal Master of Ceremonies Msgr. Giuseppe Dini (d. 1799). The Library of the Getty Research Centre possesses a ms. written by Dini ("Relazione o sia diario di tutto quelle che e stato osservato in Roma nelle venuta del Re delle due Sicilie Ferdinando IV e la Regina Maria Carolina Arciduchessa d'Austria", 1791) containing biographical and historical notes, including descriptions of the preparations for the royal visit with details about the route, the number of soldiers guarding the visitors, and the costs of the entertainment (including operatic performances and fireworks). At the back of that manuscript are printed announcements of the firework display and official appearances by Pope Pius VI. - In 1782 Dini - as that Pope's Master of Ceremonies - published a diary of the Papal journey, via Venice, to Vienna (undertaken with an aim to mitigate the social and ecclesiastical reforms enacted by Emperor Joseph II). Perhaps the ms. with its explicit references to the Republic of Venice can be connected with this 1782 journey (a German edition, "Vollständiges Tagebuch von der Reise des Pabsts Pius VI. nach Wien", appeared in Breslau in 1783). Another possibility is a connection with the election of the new Pope Pius VII in March 1800 in Venice, after a very difficult conclave in Venice that began in December 1799, soon after the death of Pius VI and just before the death of Dini on 2 November 1799. - Spine slightly damaged; some browning. London, Printed for Benj[amin] Motte, at the Middle-Temple-Gate in Fleet-street, [28 October] 1726. November 1726 (in: Correspondence Bd. III, S. 182): "About ten days ago a Book was published here of the Travels of one Gulliver, which hath been the conversation of the whole town . From the highest to the lowest it is universally read, from the Cabinet-council to the Nursery". Die verwendeten Karten wurden nach Hermann Molls "A New and Correct Map of the Whole World Shewing ye Situation of its Principal Parts" von 1719 vermutlich von Sturt und Sheppard nachgezeichnet und gestochen. "These maps appeared in all the editions published by Motte; they were even reproduced in the pirated Dublin editions of 1727 . and they appeared in all the later 18th-century editions" (Frederick Bracher).

Paris, Chanlaire & Mentelle, 1798-1799. - Original outline colour. Dissected and laid on linen in two sections, 880 x 940 mm & 660 x 940 mm. A two-sheet wall map showing Prussia, Turkey, Egypt and Abyssinia in the west, and the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan, Persia, Arabia and Somalia in the east. Two inset maps show the routes from Siré to Gondar and from Gondar to the sources of the Nile. According to the inscription, the map is based on that of "the late J. B. Laborde" (Jean-Benjamin de Laborde [1734-94], a traveller and musician), with amendments; however we have been unable to trace a map of the region by him. - The vast map was published to satisfy French interest when their seemingly-unstoppable General Bonaparte turned his attention to the conquest of Egypt in 1798. Already Napoleon had captured Malta en route to Egypt, and the oval title vignette shows him overseeing the burial of the French dead under Pompey's Pillar after the capture of the important port city of Alexandria (July 1798). - After the defeat of the Mameluk army at the Battle of the Pyramids it was Napoleon's intention to subdue the rest of the Ottoman Empire before moving to threaten British interests in India. However, as the political situation in Paris was deteriorating, Napoleon decided to leave his army in Egypt in 1799, returning to France to become First Consul. His army was less fortunate, surrendering to the British at Alexandria in 1801. - This map is very scarce: the French citizens' interest in maps of the Orient evaporated as quickly as Napoleon's.

Eutin, 27. VI. 1799. - ½ S. 8vo. - Faltspuren; sonst wohlerhalten. Oben links zeitgenöss. Bezeichnung "Voss" (wohl von Empfängerhand); unten rechts von etwas späterer Hand bezeichnet "Joh. Heinr. Voss". - Provenienz: Mitte des 19.         TRAVELS IN THE INTERIOR DISTRICTS OF AFRICA: PERFORMED UNDER THE DIRECTION AND PATRONAGE OF THE AFRICAN ASSOCIATION, IN THE YEARS 1795, 1796, AND 1797...WITH AN APPENDIX, CONTAINING GEOGRAPHICAL ILLUSTRATIONS OF AFRICA: BY MAJOR RENNELL

London: W. Bulmer and Co. for the Author, 1799. [iii]-xxviii,372,xcii,[2]pp. plus frontispiece, two leaves of music, three folding maps, and five plates (two folding). [with:] Park, Mungo: THE JOURNAL OF A MISSION TO THE INTERIOR OF AFRICA, IN THE YEAR 1805.... London. 1815. [10],cxxx,[1],219pp. plus folding map. Quarto. Contemporary tree calf, neatly rebacked to style, spine gilt, leather labels. Some light scuffing and wear to boards. Light, even age toning, some scattered foxing. Very good. Third edition, after the first two of the same year, of Park's initial African expedition and adventures. He was instructed by the African Association "to pass on to the River Niger either by way of Bambouk or by such other route as should be found most convenient, to ascertain the course, and if possible the rise and termination, of that river." Along the way he experienced almost unbelievable depredations, including robberies by local kings, imprisonment, and the loss of everything except his horse, clothing, and a pocket compass. He fell ill and would have died had a black man named Kaarta Taura not taken him in for several months. Includes the text of a "Negro Song" and a vocabulary of the Mandigo language. A fundamental African exploration. The second work is the first edition. Following his first expedition into the interior of Africa, Park returned to his Peebles surgery until, having applied several times to Joseph Banks and the African Association, he was finally asked to serve on another expedition. The expedition was charged with locating the source of the Niger River, and Parks headed a largely military force, facing disease and danger at every turn. The mission was a total disaster - forty-four Europeans died, the last of them a small group who, along with Park, were attacked at Bousa. Park had managed to send his journals back to Gambia prior to the attack, and they were edited by John Whishaw and finally published, with a life of Park, in the present form.         A missionary voyage to the southern Pacific Ocean, performed in the years 1796, 1797, 1798 in the ship Duff commanded by Captain James Wilson, compiled from thejournals of the officers and the missionaries; and illustrated with maps, charts, and views drawn by Mr William Wilson.

S Gosnell for T Chapman, London 1799 - a1-4+[2 binders direction]+[8 subscribers]+[4]+c-420+[4 additional subscribers] pages with 7 maps (5 folding) and 6 plates. Quarto (11 3/4" x 9 1/2") with new spine in six compartment with red label in gilt over original decorative blind stamped calf boards. (Ferguson 329; Sabin 104.633) First edition, first printing. Captain James Wilson (1760&#150;1814), brought the first British missionaries to Tahiti on ship Duff in 1797. Wilson was a deeply religious man. The missionaries he brought were from the London Missionary Society. There were thirty men, six women and three children. Wilson, on the Duff also explored and visited many islands in the Pacific, some of which had never had any recorded visit by a European. Among these the most important are Mangareva in the Gambier Islands and Pukarua in the Tuamotus. Duff Paid a visit as a missionary ship to Tahiti during 1796, as a result, Missionary Society has first been established in Tahiti. Three years after the establishment, the directors of the Society appointed a committee to consider a suitable memorial for presentation to Wilson for his services in helping to establish the first mission in the South Seas. Wilson fought with the British army during the American War of independence and then served nine years with the East India company. While in India he was captured by Hyder Ali and, after a daring bid for escape, was imprisoned in the black hole of Seringapatam. After his release he continued service as a captain and, despite illness and further dangerous missions, accumulated sufficientr esources to retire. throughout it all, Wilson remained fast in his irreligious opinions. While living in England with his niece, however, he was converted to an evangelical faith. he felt called to volunteer for missionary service after reading the Evangelical Magazine. Haweis did not know Wilson before receiving a letter volunteering his services in the Pacific. his skills and newfound devotion seemed perfectly suited to the situation, and Haweis saw him as &#147;God&#146;s man.&#148; the Duff arrived at Tahiti on march 5, 1797. the settlement at Tahiti of twenty of the missionaries, five of them with wives, and two children gives further examples of the role of the missionary captain. A pattern of intercourse had already been established by other voyagers, according to which the captain of a vessel would take the leading role in meetings. It is therefore not surprising that the focus of the chapter describing the arrival is on meetings between significant island figures and Captain Wilson. For example, Manemane, a &#147;high priest&#148; Frommo&#146;orea, sought Wilson as a tayo, or friend, not Jefferson, the president of the missionaries. The official account of the first mission appeared in 1799, under the lengthy title A missionary voyage to the southern Pacific Ocean, performed in the years 1796, 1797, 1798 in the ship Duff commanded by Captain James Wilson, compiled from thejournals of the officers and the missionaries; and illustrated with maps, charts, and views drawn by Mr William Wilson.it was placed firmly within the tradition of the voyages ofdiscovery by an introduction compiledby samuel Greatheed that described previous european contacts with the islands and anappendix &#147;including details never before published of the natural and civil state of otaheite.&#148; the main narrative was taken from Wilson&#146;s journal, with additions from his son and a journal kept by the missionaries during the period when the Duff was away from Tahiti at Tonga. Wilson dominated the events recorded in the narrative. Condition: Some offset toning from maps, occasional foxing, water mark to upper margin on some leaves, two leaves miss-bound at back, re-backed with contemporary blind stamped calf boards.
