ROBINSON, Frederick.
Beautifully written and lavishly illustrated manuscript on trigonometry with calligraphic headings. The author opens with general definitions of different types of projections (pp. 1-4), and proceeds with discussing three types, orthographic (pp. 5-23), stereographic (pp. 24-73), and gnomonical (pp. 74-179). Each section starts with propositions followed by several trigonometrical problems. There are numerous accurately and finely drawn diagrams to illustrate the text. They are mostly small, but some are full-page. In some diagrams the author used coloured inks to highlight particular sections and/or lines. Three diagrams on the folding leaf have pasted parts that can be unfolded to create three-dimensional figures. The note on the inside front cover reads "Frederic Robinson, December 19th 1797." We were unable to find any information on Robinson. A pencil note on the inside of the back cover states that he was an English professor for mathematics, who lived from 1746 till 1825. Folding leaf torn along fold, hardly affecting illustration. Page 4 with a minor hole very slightly affecting text. A good copy of a manuscript textbook on trigonometry with attractive calligraphy and diagrams..

This is bold statement of the separation of Christianity for the United States Republic. Please see my photo of the paragraph I photographed that states this: The 1797 Treaty of Tripoli reads: "As the government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion, [and] as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility of Mussulmen,... no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries." 1797. Edward Hasted Topographical and Historical Survey of the County of Kent Twelve volume set published from 1797 to 1801 being the second revised edition in standard 8 vo rather than the first edition a few years earlier in four volumes folio. This set is complete in text and engravings but there are no maps. I presume they were bound separately which has saved wear and the set is in magnificent condition..the text very bright and clean with sharp corners..one volume has some red spot marking to a few pages probably a printer fault...there is some offsetting to plates and vignettes..apart from that like reading a new book and yet over 200 years old. The bindings are in commensurate condition and magnificent..full tan calf with extensive gilt decoration, edging, board lines and compartmentalise spines...very bright..all labels are present..they show no wear apart from some spine top rubbing..all edges are gilt decorated and not rubbed..one volume only shows a short joint split, not vol 1 as you would expect..the other eleven have no splits or wear to joints at all which is remarkable and although the appearance of new they are the original bindings. Yellow block ends and fine blue marbled endpapers..no names or armorials. A receipt within dated 1968 for £48... equivalent to £1500 today. If you want to check any further details 01634 220683 ...if you buy this set beware because they will outshine everything else in the bookcase. I have only once ever seen a set this good..it did have maps but it cost me nearly £2000 at auction..I still have it and that is why this one is r … [Click Below for Full Description]

1797. Christian Panoply; : Containing An Apology for the Bible; In a Series of Letters, Addressed to Thomas Paine [and] An Address to Scoffers at Religion. By the Same Author; and a Brief View of the Historical Evidences of Christianity. by William Paley By Richard Watson & William Paley Published: Printed by P. Rootes & C. Blagrove, Shepherd's-Town [Virginia, now West Virginia], 1797 332 p. Another work, not listed on the title page, is The Sophist Unmasked in a Series of Letters, Addressed to Thomas Paine, by Philobiblius [pseudonym for Richard Watson], on pages [249]-332. Front board is detached. Red title label with gilt lettering on spine. The leather is scuffed and worn. Occasional foxing. This seems to be the first book, as distinguished from a pamphlet or broadside, printed in what is now West Virginia. The only earlier recorded imprints in the AII for West Virginia are a 15-page pamphlet and a broadside, both printed in 1791, and an 8-page pamphlet and a broadside, both printed in 1796. After this 1797 book there is no record of another imprint until 1803.---TWS. Little is known of either Rootes or Blagrove, both of whom disappeared almost as quickly as they had come. The above is a very critical description of a handome set of the first edition of a RARE BOOK with fine topographical plates, although I have seen 1796 as the original date ascribed. There was a Dutch edition of 1798 and a German one of 1822. The author, Fred-Leopold Graaf zu Stolberg-Stolberg, (1750-1819) was a German poet and Diplomat and this literary and almost romantic travel book was also probably influenced by the fact that it was his honeymoon trip. Le Sage
Madrid. Imprenta de la viuda e hijo de Marín. 3 vol, 1797. The Adventures of Gil Blas de Santillana is a picaresque novel written by the French Alain-René Lesage, published in parts between 1715 and 1735. Gil Blas, the protagonist of the work, is of low origin, the son of a stable boy and a maiden. But luck smiles on him when he passes into the care of his uncle, who educates him, even gaining access to study at the University of Salamanca. However, on his way he was forced to help outlaws, which led him to prison. On his release from prison, his only option is to become a servant, thus going through many hardships, but also having the opportunity to get to know and observe the behaviour of the characters of the different social classes of the time. His tenacity and cunning finally lead him to become secretary to the prime minister, gradually climbing positions to end up living in his own castle after a long life of effort and hard work. The most striking feature of the play is the fact that it is set in Spain, but written by a Frenchman. Considering that this was an essentially Spanish novel, Father José Francisco de Isla demanded its immediate translation into Spanish in order to restore it to its natural context. The originality of the work was questioned on many occasions. Voltaire was one of the first to point out the similarity between Gil Blas and Marcos de Obregón by Espinel. Others, even more incredulous, such as Juan Antonio Llorente went so far as to suggest that Gil Blas could not have been the work of a contemporary Frenchman from Lesage, since the level of det … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROSSINI, Gioachino 1792-1868
1797. "No composer in the first half of the 19th century enjoyed the measure of prestige, wealth, popular acclaim or artistic influence that belonged to Rossini. His contemporaries recognized him as the greatest Italian composer of his time. His achievements cast into oblivion the operatic world of Cimarosa and Paisiello, creating new standards against which other composers were to be judged. That both Bellini and Donizetti carved out personal styles is undeniable; but they worked under Rossini's shadow, and their artistic personalities emerged in confrontation with his operas. Not until the advent of Verdi was Rossini replaced at the centre of Italian operatic life." Philip Gossett in Grove Music Online. Filippo Santocanale (1797-1884) was an attorney from Palermo who was a strong proponent of unification and served as a parliamentarian in both the Sicilian and national governments. He was a close friend of both Rossini and Bellini as well as handling many of their legal and business affairs. "Horne had a voice of extraordinary range, rich and tangy in timbre, with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top... In concert she once achieved the feat of singing in a single programme Rossini arias and Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene, proof of her exceptional versatility. Throughout her lengthy career she was an admired recitalist, singing lieder, mélodies, Spanish and American songs with equal aplomb." Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online.. 1 page. ZATTA ANTONIO
Margine sinistro ampliato. XII,670 pp., 15 engraved plates. 4 leaves with upper right corners gone, not affecting Wessel's paper. ¶ First edition of this important first systematical treatment of the theory of complex numbers and at the same time, the first work to add vectors in three-dimensional space."Wessel's fame as a mathematician is based entirely on one paper, written in Danish and published in the Mémoires of the Royal Danish Academy, that established his priority in publication of the geometric representation of complex numbers. John Wallis had given a geometric representation of the complex roots of quadratic equations in 1685; Gauss had had the idea as early as 1799 but did not explicitly publish it until 1831. Robert Argand's independent publication in 1806 must be credited as the source of this concept in modern mathematics because Wessel's work remained essentially unknown until 1895, when its significance was pointed out by Christian Juel. The title of Wessel's treatise calls it an "attempt" to give an analytic representation of both distance and direction that could be used to solve plane and spherical polygons. The connection of this goal with Wessel's work as a surveyor and cartographer is obvious. The statement of the problem al … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed 1797 Memoria sobre el mejor mode de fabricar el azucar que en junta celebrada sociedad patriotica havana 1797 First Cuban book about SUGAR FABRICATION. Super very rare Cuban Book and one of the more importants. Cuba has a long-established scientific history which could be considered to have started with the publication in 1673, in Spain, of the first scientific tome written in Cuba by Lazaro de Flores, a physician. The first scientific paper published in Cuba itself was in 1714 and was on astronomical observations. The founding of the Real y Pontificia "Universidad de San Gerónimo? in Havana in 1728 for the study of medicine formally established medical scientific investigation and this was followed by the founding of the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País based in the scientific output of the universities, in 1793. ? The year 1797 is considered the year of ?scientific explosion? because of the number of scientific papers emanating from La Habana. They included "Disertación sobre algunas plantas cubanas", "Oración inaugural en elogio de la cirugía", "Disertación sobre la fiebre maligna llamada vulgarmente vómito negro"," Discurso sobre las buenas propiedades de la tierra bermeja para el cultivo de la caña"," Memoria sobre el mejor modo de fabricar azúcar ? and, in July that year, the first defense of the theories of Copernicus was published. ? By 1826 there had developed a significant life-sciences scientific establishment which was evidenced in part by the launching of the Medi … [Click Below for Full Description]

1 page.
