[BIGGS, Charlotte (d.1827)] GIFFORD, John, ed. (1758-1818).
London: T.N. Longman, 1797.. SECOND EDITION. In two volumes. Crown Octavo. pp. xxxiv, 448; 464. In contemporary full mottled calf with gilt titles to red morocco labels on spines. Upper joints split; corners bumped, with heavy wear to edges. Head and tail bands loose or damaged. Front free end-paper to vol. I coming loose. Black ink ownership inscriptions to front free end-papers and title pages of both vols. Fair overall. Long thought to have been the work of Helen Maria Williams, this publication is now generally believed to originate from the pen of Charlotte Biggs. Aquatinta-Taf. in Sepia nach John Atkinson gest. von J. C. Mayr. (22 x 14 cm). Hellbraunes KalbLdr. d. Zt. mit RSch. u. Goldfileten auf Rücken u. Deckeln sowie marmor. Schnitt. [Hudibras; dt.]. - Goedeke VII, 713, 381, 1b; Schröder 3791, 1. - Samuel Butler (1612-1680), englischer Vers-Satiriker, übt in diesem "komischen Heldenepos" witzig-parodistisch Kritik an der Scheinheiligkeit der Puritaner seiner Zeit (vgl. Wilpert, Lex. d. Weltlit.; ohne diese Übersetzung). - Diedrich Wilhelm Soltau (1745-1827), aus Hamburg-Bergedorf stammend, unternahm, nach den Schweizern Johann Jacob Bodmer (1698-1783), Frankfurt 1737, u. Johann Heinrich Waser (1714-1777), Hamburg u.

Connecticut Western Reserve]:
1797-1799], [Hartford?: 1797 - Printed folio broadside, 7-3/8" x 12-1/4", completed in manuscript and docketed in manuscript on verso. Old folds, light foxing, else Very Good. An evidently unrecorded document on Connecticut claims to the Western Reserve, not located on ESTC, OCLC, or NAIP as of March 2017. "A general meeting of the agents of said proprietors, held at Hartford, on the 17th May, 1797", established a schedule of taxes. But Frances Bradley of Fairfield, failed to pay. Thus, on January 15, 1798, her property was sold for the amount of unpaid taxes, to Walter Terry of Fairfield. Lothrop Lewis of Fairfield, the tax collector, here officially transfers the property to Terry. His deed, dated March 30, 1799, is acknowledged on April 5, 1799. Lothrop Lewis, whose name is printed, also signs in ink; witnesses were Lewis Sturges and Samuel Rowland. In 1786 Connecticut relinquished claims to land west of Pennsylvania except for the Western Reserve, a portion of what is now south of Lake Erie in northeast Ohio. Connecticut assigned some of the Reserve to its citizens as compensation for losses suffered during the Revolution; and sold the rest to a consortium of Connecticut men, including Moses Cleaveland, who had formed the Connecticut Land Company. Their speculations were not successful, there being no effective local government in the Reserve capable of unraveling the tangle of land titles. Thus taxes imposed were frequently not collected. To force payment of the tax, on January 15, 1798 Lothrop Lewis conducted the sales. [Carpenter: ORIGIN AND LOCATION OF THE FIRELANDS … [Click Below for Full Description]

Emer de Vattel
London, G.G. and J. Robinson, 1797. Octavo. lxvi, 500 pages. Contemporary 3/4 leather over marbled boards. Wear to boards, chipping to spine, joints cracked. Armorial bookplate. Minor toning, occasional spotting. Emer de Vattel was a noted Swiss philosopher and legal theorist. Vattel made important foundational contributions to modern international law and political philosophy. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ú? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ú? ? ? ? ? ß? ? í? ? ? ? ? ? ? ú? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ¼? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ú? ? ? ? ? ß? ? ? ? ·To begin with, he applied a strictly interstate perspective in which the law of nations is specifically the law governing relations between States. Vattel recognized the existence of a duality of norms governing the conduct of sovereign States: the norms imposed by natural law and those imposed by the positive law of nations. He also theorized about a law of nations that is both "liberal and pluralist", and which is very much in line with the state of European society at the time of the Enlightenment. (Emmanuelle Jouannet, The Oxford Handbook of the History of International Law). Vattel's impact can be seen on the framers of the American constitution. London: T. Cadell jun. and W. Davies successors to Mr. Cadell 1797 - 8vo., (4) + 202pp., including the half-title (dust-soiled and frayed at fore-edge), contemporary sheep-backed marbled card covers, generally a bit worn but overall a very good copy. The half-title has the ownership inscription of a church library (1846). First edition. Goldsmiths 17190. Kress B.3476 (but a defective copy lacking the half-title). Both Goldsmiths and Kress follow Halkett & Laing's suggestion that the work is by 'Nolan': ESTC does not concur, however. This was an anonymous reply to Thomas Erskine's A View of the Causes and Consequences of the Present War with France>, published earlier in the year. In his own work, Erskine had put forward the British view of the conflict which brought tensions and a split between the United States and France in an 'undeclared war'. Erskine spent some time comparing the French and American revolutions, pointing out the differences with respect to the British perspective. In the present tract that author attacks Erskine's View> and notes that it 'is not calculated to inspire this country with such sentiments as accord with her present situation - that it tends to advise measures derogatory to her pristine glory, unworthy of her present power, and inconsistent with her future safety . I endeavour to shew that the work is fallacious in its statements, erroneous in its reasoning, and noxious to the interests of the country in its object' [p.2]. The Appendix (pp.191-202) is a succinct but interesting series of Remarks on the supposed scarcity of specie> reflecting … [Click Below for Full Description]

BARRINGTON, George
avec une description du pays, des moeurs, des coutumes et de la religion des natifs. Par le celebre George Barrington. Traduit de l'Anglais, sur la troisieme Edition. Paris : Chez Desenne, An VI [22 September 1797- 21 September 1798]. Octavo, quarter calf over marbled boards (lightly rubbed, corners bumped), spine with gilt lettering and ornament, marbled endpapers, ex-libris on front pastedown, 192 pp (mild spotting to title, otherwise clean and bright). A very good copy. First French edition of Barrington's work, purportedly based on the third English edition. Scarce. Ferguson 259; Garvey AB12. Garvey points out that this translation is a slightly augmented version of the English third edition on account of the fact that it adds a preface, explanatory notes and a final paragraph in which 'Barrington' rues his exile (Garvey, The Celebrated George Barrington, p 262). George Barrington (1755-1804), the Irish-born socialite and pickpocket, was sentenced in 1790 to seven years servitude in Botany Bay. By 1792 he had become the first convict in the colony to be emancipated, apparently because of his actions in assisting to quell a mutiny on the convict transport which had brought him to Sydney. He became a superintendent of convicts and constable in Parramatta. The first volume of his memoirs was published in 1795 as 'Voyage to Botany Bay', and is considered to be in the main his own work. Although a vast number of works were later to be published in his name, most of them were entirely apocryphal, the result of editors taking advantage of the enormous popularity and success of … [Click Below for Full Description]
