Gay, Anthelme ; [ Hugh Maxwell's copy (1787-1873)]
New York: Printed for the author, by John Bull, no. 115, Cherry-Street, 1797. New York: Printed for the author, by John Bull, no. 115, Cherry-Street. Good+. 1797. First Edition. Hardcover. 215, [1] pages; Contemporary full sheepskin leather, flat spine with gilt rules (now nearly rubbed away). This original binding is quite rubbed and worn, with several scrapes to the leather. The front hinge is cracked and tender, but the cover is still attached on its cords. There are two ink signatures and one set of initials in ink on the title page and facing front paste-down, along with another line. That line and one of the signatures is crossed out in ink, but it is easily possible to read that the distinctive signatures and initials belonged to a noted New York lawyer and politician, Hugh Maxwell [1787-1873]. This is a copy of one of the first generation of schoolbooks launched in the early United States of America. It was printed in New York, during the second term of President George Washington and bears the author's broad statement on the title page: "Dedicated to the United States of America." The author may have sought a broader audience, as evidenced by this dedication, but did achieve adoption by the scholarly community of Columbia College. Anthelme Gay printed in full the text of a letter of endorsement by Columbia's President, Dr. William S. Johnson, and a slightly earlier endorsement from Columbia's Professor of the French Language - A[ntoine]. [Villete de] Marcellin. This latter figure was appointed in 1792, at an annual salary of £100 -- to … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

LAGRANGE (Joseph Louis)
Rouse Ball II, p. 97. Riccardi I, 2¡-4 ; Poggendorff I, 1344 ; DSB VII, 567.

United States. President (1789-1797. Washington).
W. Ross, 1797. The lead-up to the XYZ Affair: A collection of missives regarding the increasingly contentious relations between the United States and France. This volume opens with Washington's address and a lengthy account of American issues and complaints sent by Pickering to Pinckney, then continues with => 163 documents including correspondences from Fauchet, Randolph, and others, many of which are translated into English from French. (While a few institutionally held copies have an additional appendix of items in the original French, most typically the item is seen without the French documents, as here). John Adams responded to this publication in a letter to his wife written the same day, in which he refers to the "load of documents, which will make Conversation enough for the People, for some time" found herein, and notes that => "the approaching [storm] looks black and thick enough: but I have Confidence in the Sense, Spirit and Resources of this Country."
