This remarkable work, better known as the "Reynolds Pamphlet," relates to one of the first sex scandals in American political history. While secretary of the treasury, Hamilton had a three-year affair with a woman named Maria Reynolds. This affair was instigated and encouraged by her husband, James, as a way to extort hush money from Hamilton. Jailed for his participation in a shady speculative scheme, Reynolds attempted to implicate Hamilton in exchange for his freedom, through the help of political enemies, believing Hamilton would claim responsibility if he threatened with public exposure of the affair. DU LARENS, Henri-Joseph]
Chez les Marchands de Nouveautes, A Paris. Four volumes bound as two. [4], 264; [2], ii, 256; ii, 244; [2], 215pp, [1]. With five engraved plates. Nineteenth-century green half-cloth, marbled paper boards. Slightest of wear to extremities. Ink annotations to endpapers, expertly repaired tears to title and first contents leaf of Vol. III, occasional light foxing. A scarce literary work by radical French novelist and philosopher, Henri-Joseph Du Laurens (1719-1797). Combining liberal politics, religious criticism, and erotic escapades, the work perfectly captures the authors subversive character. An antiauthoritarian in every regard, Du Laurens, despite being an ordained priest, wrote many illicit and anti-clerical works until his arrest and imprisonment in 1767. First printed in London in 1766, initially attributed to Voltaire, the work was frequently condemned as immoral and as a result often pirated. This edition was likely the first to be legally produced in France, with the authorities presumably too distracted by the contemporary political atmosphere in the nation. Paine, Thomas
Daniel Isaac Eaton, Newgate Street, London 1797 - First UK edition (first published in Philadelphia in 1796, this is the first London printing). 53pp. sewn but disbound from boards, minor scattered foxing and small institutional stamp. Thomas Paine's A Letter To George Washington was a scathing attack on the Father of our Country by the Revolutionary spokesman which seriously damaged Paine's reputation in the eyes of many of his countrymen. Paine's Common Sense, published in 1776 was championed by Washington at a turning point in the Revolution and Paine, in turn, dedicated Rights of Man published in 1791 to Washington. Yet during the months Paine sat in a French prison amidst the chaos of the French Revolution, charged as an enemy alien, he ultimately blamed the President "for not quickly interceding on his behalf. Moreover, while in prison he had contracted a serious illness, which he likewise now blamed on Washington's negligence. A lesser known Paine text as it was left out of early collections of his work. Altona, Johann Friedrich Hammerich, 1797. Jahrhunderts.

STOLL (Maximilien) , CORVISART (J.N.)
BONNET CHARLES.
Presso Giuseppe Rosa,, In Venezia, 1797. BOUCHER, Jonathan
Printed for G. G. and J. Robinson, London 1797 - Royal octavo. three-quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, burgundy gilt lettered morocco spine label, printed paper spine label. Boucher (1738- 1804) came to Virginia in 1754 as a private tutor in a family. With George Washington forced to make a hard choice between protecting his argumentative friend and showing loyalty to the colonists' cause, in the autumn of 1775 Boucher returned to England with his wife, Eleanor Addison of Oxon Hill, Maryland, where his loyalism was rewa … [Click Below for Full Description]
