PAGNI NICOLO'-BARDI LUIGI.
1797. Incisione in rame su sei lastre, colorata d'epoca, mm 1500x730, montata su tele e ripiegata, divisa in 30 sezioni.

Anton Maria Zanetti (1706-1778)
Venezia, 1797. Presso Francesco Tosi. - Due volumi in-8°; I: pp. VIII, 145 (i.e. 245), antiporta figurata; II. pp. 256, antiporta figurata. Legature ottocentesche in mezza pergamena e carta decorata. Cicogna 4661; Cicognara 4376: «Ottimo libretto ben epilogato dalle pure sorgenti donde deriva». … [Click Below for Full Description]

ZANETTI.; VENICE
1797 - [ZANETTI, Anton Maria and Marco BOSCHINI]. Two volumes. viii, 145 (i.e., 245), [3, including final blank] pp.; 256 (i.e., 272) pp. Each volume illustrated with an engraved frontispiece. 8vo., 165 x 110 mm, bound alike in contemporary paste paper decorated with red flowers against a striped ground, later glassine wrappers. Venezia: Presso Francesco Tosi, 1797. First Edition, based on Boschini's Le Minere della pittura (1664) and Zanetti's Della Pittura Veneziana (1771) with additions by the publisher, Tosi. Both Boschini and Zanetti were of fundamental importance to the history of art in Venice. Schlosser-Magnino calls Boschini's guide "the first true artistic guide to Venice," and Zanetti's inventory of Venetian painting "one of the best in its genre" (p. 548). This handy set combines their work into a comprehensive, practical guide to monuments of Venetian art and architecture, including a final section Istoria della Pittura Veniziana (sic), with biographies of artists; and an addition made in 1797 identifying paintings that were transported out of Venice by military force the same year. Marco Boschini (1613-1678) was a Venetian painter, engraver and art dealer whose most important client, Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici, commissioned him to purchase Venetian paintings for the Medici collection. Zanetti (1706-1778) was the librarian to the famed Marciana Library in Venice for forty years, and his familiarity with the art and artists of his c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cervantes, Miguel De
Gabriel de Sancha 1797-98, Madrid. First edition of the first annotated edition of Don Quixote. Five volumes, contemporary tree calf, covers with a swashed diagonal cross, edged with a gilt roll, gilt bands and green lettering pieces, marbled endpapers, sprinkled edges. With 2 engraved portraits, 2 engraved headpieces, 3 folding maps, and 31 engraved plates executed by P. Duflos and Moreno Tejada after R. Ximeno, A. Navarro, Monnet and Camaron y Paret. In near fine condition. "This beautiful edition, which is printed on excellent paper, is of the highest importance for Pellicer's erudite notes and commentary, and for his painstaking corrections of the text" (Ruis). By focusing his attention on the authentic Spanish folklore that Cervantes would have drawn upon, Pellicer set the precedent for modern editorial methods. The present edition is illustrated with numerous fine plates, described by Ashbee as "among the finest produced in Spain." Don Quixote tells the tale of a man so entranced by reading about the chivalrous romantic ideals touted in books that he decides to take up his sword and become a knight-errant himself, with the aims of defending the helpless and warding off the wicked. With his somewhat confused laborer-turned-squire, Sancho Panza, they roam the world together and have adventures that have haunted reader's imaginations for nearly four hundred years. Don Quixote is generally recognized as the first modern novel. Over those years, it has had an incredible influence on tho … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, Imprimerie nationale [puis] Baudouin, 1797, in-8, 4 volumes de I. 472pp. ; II. 514, (2)pp. ; III. 631, (1bl.)pp. : et de IV. 378, (2)pp, et 134pp, demi-basane marron de l'Ãpoque, dos lisse avec filets et petits fers dorÃs, piÚces de titre en basane brique, tranches mouchetÃes (reliure trÃs lÃgÚrement frottÃe), Rare Ãdition originale. Le procÚs de la conjuration des Egaux par la Haute Cour de Justice de VendÃŽme constitue une des sources les plus importantes pour comprendre Babeuf et ses thÃories Ãgalitaires, pour comprendre en quoi cette conjuration reprÃsente la premiÚre tentative pour transformer en une force pratique l'idÃe d'un nouvel ordre du monde, pour comprendre comment et pourquoi, pour la premiÚre fois, l'idÃal communiste souhaita phagocyter une rÃpublique chancelante. Nà à Saint-Quentin en 1760, Babeuf s'engagea dans la RÃvolution dÚs la convocation des Etats-GÃnÃraux en revendiquant la communautà des biens et des travaux. Pour lui, le but de la RÃvolution Ãtait d'instaurer l'EgalitÃ. C'est cette thÃorie qu'il dÃveloppa dans ses journaux le "Courrier picard" ou le "Tribun du peuple", ou bien encore dans ses livres comme le "Cadastre perpÃtuel". DÃÃu par Thermidore puis par le Directoire, il rassembla des rosbespierristes, des hÃbertistes et des dÃmocrates rÃvolutionnaires, afin de renverser le rÃgime pour instaurer la constitution de 1793 et l'EgalitÃ. Un traitre (Grisel) dÃnonÃa le complot à Carnot qui le rÃprima et fit opÃrer les arrestations le 21 florÃal an IV. Le procÚs s'ouvrit le 14 VendÃmiaire an V (5 octobre 1796). LA FONTAINE, Jean de;
"The first book illustrated for the Didots by Gérard is perhaps his most satisfactory. His four plates for Psyché et Cupidon and one for Adonis allowed him to deal with the subject that he handled best, idylls of young love. Though they conform to the neoclassic pattern, even to ressembling sculptures in low-relief, they manage at the same time to be graceful, elegant and sansuous. The artist is proudly described on the title page as "Gérard, peintre" (Gordon N. Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book 1700 to 1914, 69). Quelques rousseurs.
