GRANIÉ, Pierre
Paris, chez Pougin ... Maret ... Desenne ... Deroy. 1797. Ve anne rpublicaine. Paris, chez Pougin ... Maret ... Desenne ... Deroy. 1797. Ve année républicaine. 8vo., (4) + 270 (i.e. 271) + (3)pp., with the half-title, half title, title and final couple of leaves rather dust-soiled, but a good, large, copy with generous margins, mid-19th century half calf with raised bands and a label. First edition. A detailed diary recording the complicated events of the first year or two of the French Revolution in 1789-91. Pierre Granié (1755-1819) published several political commentaries, including his more complete Histoire des États-Généraux> in 1814. The identity of the 'Citoyen des États-Unis de l'Amérique septentrionale' is superficially unclear. Could it possibly refer, we wonder, to Tom Paine himself? Paine frequently reminded the French that he was an American citizen (see, for example, the Prologue to The Age of Reason>) in spite of also accepting French citizenship, approved by the Assembly, before he was elected to the revolutionary Convention in 1792. His imprisonment in December 1793 was, however, partly based on his dual American citizenship.

REEVE, Clara (1729-1807)
London: printed for C. Dilly, in the Poultry, MDCCXCVII [1797]. Early Reprint. Sixth Edition of Reeve's best-known work, a major influence on the development of Gothic fiction. 8vo: xi,[1],264pp, with 8 full-page copper-engraved plates (including frontispiece). English mottled calf, flat spine in six compartments, gilt sunburst medallion in each, separated by gilt-ruled bands, black leather lettering piece gilt, board edges decorated with gilt roll. Early, neat manuscript ex libris to front fly leaf. An excellent, wide-margined example in a handsome contemporary binding, spotting on plates restricted to margins, pages virtually pristine. Summers, p. 449. Lowndes, IV, 2065 ("A romance of considerable repute, frequently reprinted."). First published anonymously at Colchester, in 1777, as The champion of virtue, then republished a year later with Reeve's name on the title-page, as The Old English Baron: a Gothic Story. An ambitious reworking of Horace Walpole's Castle of Otranto (or, as Reeve described it, "the literary offspring of the castle of Otranto"). "The story, like many of the time, concerns usurpation unmasked and legitimate succession restored by a hero resembling an idealized mid-eighteenth-century gentrified professional man. This fable continued to speak to the largely professional middle-class reading public. An eighth edition appeared in 1807, Anna Letitia Barbauld included it in her British Novelists (1810), and there were many further reprints throughout the century, when it was often paired with Walpole's Otranto." BERNARD, Pierre-Joseph (1710-1775)
P. Didot l’Aîné, Paris 1797 - Limited edition of Bernard’s ‘Oeuvres’ illustrated by Pierre-Paul Prud’hon. Folio (310 x 235mm). 300pp. Four engraved plates after Pierre-Paul Prud’hon, by Prud’hon, Beisson and Copia. Three of the plates after Prud’hon illustrate L’art d’aimer (1775). Prud’hon’s own erotically charged engraving for Phrosine et Mélidore, later adapted to an opera, is thought to be the only engraving indisputably made by the French master. Modern red morocco gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers and edges; (some foxing throughout). Limited edition one of 150 copies beautifully printed in large character on papier-vélin fort d’Angoulême with the plates "avant la lettre," before the letters. Good copy of the best and only complete edition of the works of Bernard, salon poet and playwright commonly known by the nickname ‘Gentil-Bernard,’ which was given to him by Voltaire. Pierre-Paul Prud’hon (1758-1823) was held in high esteem as court portraitist for Napoleon. His illustrations to Bernard’s Oeuvres reflect the Italianate neo-classicized settings of Antonio Canova, da Vinci and Corregio, all of whose works introduced softer, more sensual effect into their compositions. The suite of plates is an exquisite addition to Bernard’s works, which were imbued with pleasure and debauchery. His works in some ways reflected his own life, ending all too short from extravagant indulgences. Cohen-de Ricci 133. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SADE, Donatien Alphonse Françoise, Marquis de)
En Hollande (Paris), 1797 (i.e. Brussels ?, c. 1860). En Hollande (Paris),, 1797 (i.e. Brussels ?, c. 1860). With frontispiece and 40 lithographed plates. 12mo (133 x 82 mm). 19th-century red half morocco, gold titles on spine, t.e.g. In a cloth box. En Hollande (Paris), 1797 (i.e. Brussels ?, c. 1860). One of the most celebrated of all European erotic texts. De Sade (1740-1814), philosopher and writer is best known for his erotic works, and famous for his libertine sexuality. This present edition must be regarded as an independent work and probably is a mid-19th century word-for-word reprint done after a copy of the first French one with a fictive date from 1797. It is richly illustrated with all the sexually explicit resp. pornographical plates hors text designed after examples from 18th century French book illustration. Justine caused widespread outrage upon publication and was actively suppressed, with police seizing and destroying what could be found: So as a result all early editions are very rare. We were able to locate only one other copy of this edition, held in the Erotica Collection of the British (Museum) Library, shelfmark: General Reference Collection P.C.30.a4. - A nice copy. - Kearney, The Private Case 1630 (BL), London 1981; UIN: BLL01001915441 (same); cf. GIBBON, Edward (1737-1794)
London: Printed for A. Strahan and T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, 1797.. [Late Antiquity]. EARLY OCTAVO EDITION. In 12 volumes. Octavo (22 x 14cm). With a copper engraved frontispiece of the author to volume I and three folding maps. Recently re-backed using original marbled calf boards, with gilt titles to red and black labels on spine, done to-style with additional gilt tooling. Some repairs to folding maps. Some volumes lacking half-titles. Occasional minor worming to margins. Generally a crisp clean set. Good overall. Originally published sequentially in six volumes between 1776 and 1788, Gibbon's 'Decline and Fall' is universally acknowledged as a historiographical and literary giant of the English language. It has been read by historians of Rome and Byzantium ever since publication, though Gibbon's pessimistic attitude is currently unfashionable amongst scholars of Late Antiquity. Nevertheless, the breadth of his coverage and the depth of his knowledge remains unrivalled.

Giovanni Maria CASSINI
- FIRST EDITION, CONTEMPORARY OUTLINE COLOUR - The Italian painter and engraver, Giovanni Maria Cassini, produced this detailed map of Lower Silesia, historical region that is located mostly in Poland, with small parts in Ge … [Click Below for Full Description]

This remarkable work, better known as the "Reynolds Pamphlet," relates to one of the first sex scandals in American political history. While secretary of the treasury, Hamilton had a three-year affair with a woman named Maria Reynolds. This affair was instigated and encouraged by her husband, James, as a way to extort hush money from Hamilton. Jailed for his participation in a shady speculative scheme, Reynolds attempted to implicate Hamilton in exchange for his freedom, through the help of political enemies, believing Hamilton would claim responsibility if he threatened with public exposure of the affair. In the meantime rumors linking Hamilton to the speculative scheme began to circulate and find their way into print, most notably in Call … [Click Below for Full Description]

EDEN, Frederick Morton, Sir.
London Printed by J. Davis for B. & J. White; G. G. & J. Robinson; T. Payne; R. Faulder; T. Egerton; J. Debrett; and D. Bremner, 1797. First edition. Three volumes, 4to., complete with half titles to all volumes, directions to the binder (end of vol. 1) and the supplementary leaf 3L3 in volume 2, and sheets 5B*–5B†4 in volume 3 as called for in the directions to the binder, folding table, modern half calf gilt, an excellent example. A remarkable work by a follower of Adam Smith. Sir Frederick Eden (1766 – 1809), was one of the founders of the Globe Insurance Company and later its chairman, however he is best known as a social investigator. His reputation for this rests on The State of the Poor. He explained the circumstances that led him to do the research: "The difficulties which the labouring classes experienced, from the high price of grain, and of provisions in general, as well as of cloathing [sic] and fuel, during the years 1794 and 1795, induced me, from motives both of benevolence and personal curiosity, to investigate their conditions in various parts of the kingdom." The book was intended to provide a factual basis for the current debate on what to do about the poor. "[The State of the Poor] was written from a perspective that reveals Eden's general adherence to Adam Smith's system of natural liberty in economic affairs; this led Karl Marx to claim that Eden was the only eighteenth-century disciple of Smith to produce a work of any significance." (Donald Winch, ODNB). Eden did some of the field-work himself, obtained information from clergymen but also sent out "a … [Click Below for Full Description]
