BEWICK, THOMAS:
2 vols. [1: History and Description of Land Birds. 2: Containing the History and Description of Water Birds]. Newcastle, Printed by Sol. Hodgson/ Edward Walker for Beilby & Bewick 1797-1804. With 448 textual wood-engravings. XXX + 336 XX + 400 pp. Clean and well-preserved copy bound in nice contemporary full marbled calf, early rebacked with coloured labels and richly gilt spines. 50% Udsalg/Sale Ny pris/New Pris: 2nd issue. Large Imperial printed in 207 copies. Thomas Bewick [1753-1828] is best known for his History of British Birds, which is admired today mainly for its wood engravings, especially the small, sharply observed, and often humorous vignettes known as tail-pieces. He is credited with popularizing, a technical innovation in the printing of illustrations using wood. He adopted metal-engraving tools to cut hard boxwood across the grain, producing printing blocks that could be integrated with metal type, but were much more durable than traditional woodcuts. The result was high quality illustration at a low price. [Wikipedia]. The text of the first volume dealing with Land Birds is by Beilby and the second volume Water Birds is by Bewick. All the wood engravings are by Bewick. Zimmer p. 57 Nissen IVB, 95. Roscoe 15A.

MANTUA.]
[Mantua, n.p., ] and Milan, Palini, n.d., [1797]. - Two works in one volume, 8vo, pp. 16; 24; some spotting due to paper quality; fore-margin cut close, just touching first letters on last leaf; contemporary red boards, green paper spine. A fascinating diary documenting a vital point during Napoleon's first Italian campaign, the siege of Mantua between September 1796 and February 1797, which blocked the Austrian armies from Northern Italy. The anonymous author gives a precise account of the events as they affect the city, how rationing was applied and health and public order deteriorated, until the surrender in February 1797. He expressly condemns excessive prices and profiteering of those who took advantage of the desperate situation. Of particular interest is the list of prices for individual food items at the height of the siege.Bound with the work is a brief account of the Venetian Republic until its end under Napoleonic occupation.
[Click Below for Full Description]
