MAISTRE (Joseph de)]
Londres [i.e. Bâle], 1797. Monglond, IV, col. 6-11. Barbier, I, 713). Quelques rares petites auréoles. Très bon exempl … [Click Below for Full Description]

COLQUHOUN, Patrick
Printed by H. Fry.for C. Dilly, London. xxix, [7], 444, xxviiipp. With a half-title and a folding table. Handsomely bound in contemporary tree-calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Slight rubbing to extremities. Occasional spots of light foxing, substantial loss to RFEP, ink inscription to head of half-title; 'Sophia O'Head (?) 1829.' Patrick Colquhoun (1745-1820), Scottish merchant, statistician, magistrate, and founder of the first regular preventive police force in England, the Thames River Police. First published in 1797, A Treatise on the Police of the Metropolis examines the nature of criminal activity within London, such as burglary, fraud, gambling, and illegal trading in the dockyards, and discusses issues of punishment and suggests alterations to the policing of the capital that Colquhoun thought necessary. He emphasised the requirement for measures in crime prevention, particularly through the visible presence of officers acting as a deterrent, to be a fundamental part of any police force. His utilitarian approach saw that Colquhoun's methodology would greatly inform techniques in modern policing throughout the world. ESTC T140441. Size: 8vo [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

Précédé d'un hommage aux mânes de l'auteur par M. Meister de ZurichThe main subject of the book is the relationship between the valet Jacques and his master, who is never named. The two are traveling to a destination the narrator leaves vague, and to dispel the boredom of the journey Jacques is compelled by his master to recount the story of his loves. However, Jacques's story is continually interrupted by other characters and various comic mishaps. Other characters in the book tell their own stories and they, too, are continually interrupted. There is even a „reader" who periodically interrupts the narrator with questions, objections, and demands for more information or detail. The tales told are usually humorous, with romance or sex as their subject matter, and feature complex characters indulging in deception. Jacques's key philosophy is that everything that happens to us down here, whether for good or for evil, has been written up above" (″tout ce qui nous arrive de bien et de mal ici-bas était écrit là-haut"), on a „great … [Click Below for Full Description]

Göttingen Rosenbusch -99, 1797. (22 x 12,5 cm). Jh.). - Einbände etwas berieben und bestoßen. By a Magister [Patrick Colquhoun (1745-1820)]
H. Fry, London, 1797. 4th Edition . Hardcover. Good. MDCCXCVII [1797] Fourth edition. [5], vi-xxix, [7], 440, xxviiip. Bound in half calf. Fold out graph. Bookplate to the rear pastedown for: Mr. Day, Woburn. "This book provides a summary of the criminal offences which were commonplace in London in the late-eighteenth century, with suggestions as to remedy the situation. It was written by Patrick Colquhoun and first issued in 1798. Theft and other crimes were problematic for merchants and shopkeepers in London throughout the eighteenth century. Without an organised police force, crime was able to flourish in the city and vast sums of money were lost each year. Colquhoun and his associates, with support from the philosopher Jeremy Bentham, established a private "river police" to combat these problems. The success of the force persuaded the government to pass an act which made it a public organisation in 1800, one of the first such police forces to be established and which pre-dated Robert Peel's police force by almost 30 years." - Royal Collection Trust. Condition: Good only. Front board attached by the cords only. Rubbed with loss. Pencil inscription to the front endpapers. Ink inscription to the title page. Scattered foxing with the occasional thumbmark.Worming to the corner of the last 9 pages and rear pastedown. The corner of the rear free endpaper is missing.

An eminent figure in the Vienna school of practical medicine, he is most noted for his successful clinical methods and his sound theories for studying the facts of a disease during life and after death. The main hero in Balzac's novel Le Médecin de Compagne is said to possess some features of this famous professor, who along with his wife, the talented Viennese singer Kristin Gerhardy, took an active part in cultural and philanthropic activities.
