REQUENO Vincenzo
Parma, Fratelli Gozzi, 1797. in-8, pp. (8), 141, (3), leg. orig. cart. marmorizz. (dorso rinforzato). Perfetto esempl., a pieni margini. Brunet IV, 1244. Graesse VI, 92. De Backer-Sommervogel VI, 1671.5. Diz. Biogr. Univ. IV, 808. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Lagrange, Joseph Louis
l'Imprimerie de la Republique, Paris. First Theory of Functions of a Real Variable Lagrange, Joseph Louis (1736-1813). . . . 4to. [4], viii, 276pp. Paris: Imprimérie de la République, An V [1797/98]. 271 x 215 mm. (uncut and partly unopened). Original limp boards, title in ink on spine, minor soiling at foot of spine. Light toning, otherwise a very fine, crisp copy. First Edition, second issue. Lagrange was born in Turin of mixed Italian and French descent, and spent the first 30 years of his life in his native city. He began devoting himself exclusively to mathematics when he was 17; within a year he had published his first mathematical paper and begun a fruitful correspondence with Leonhard Euler, who at the time was working in Berlin as Director of Mathematics at the Berlin Academy. While in Turin Lagrange founded the Turin Academy of Sciences and published a number of papers in its journal; his mathematical work during this time helped to establish the calculus of variations. In 1766, upon Euler's return to St. Petersburg, Lagrange agreed to take over Euler's position at the Berlin Academy. He spent the next twenty years in Berlin where he made a number of fundamental contributions to algebra, number theory and celestial mechanics; during this time he also wrote his landmark Mécanique analytique (1788), which "transformed mechanics into a branch of mathematical analysis" (O'Connor and Robertson). In 1787 Lagrange moved to Paris where he became a member of the French Academy of Sciences; i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Four quarto text volumes handsomely bound in later half calf with mottled boards. Spines decoratively gilt in compartments with raised bands and contrasting morocco title-labels. Endpapers and all edges marbled. Text printed on pale blue paper. Complete with half-titles and engraved portrait (a little foxed and with some offsetting to title-page). [With] folio atlas bound in later full calf with raised bands (rubbing to extremities and title-label). The atlas is complete with engraved pictorial title-page by Philippe Triere after Jean Michel Moreau le Jeune and 69 maps and plates 20 of which are folding. Front free endpaper partially detached some discolouration to edges of first and last pages some offsetting of plates and slight foxing. Notwithstanding this is a remarkably fresh set of the first edition. In 1785 at the behest of King Louis XVI French navigator La Pérouse (1741-1788) embarked on a circumnavigation of the Pacific and what was undoubtedly one of the great voyages of discovery. Unfortunately La Pérouse did not have the opportunity to bask in the glory that would surely have been his had he made it back alive. Kant, Immanuel.
Königsberg, Friedrich Nicolovius (gedruckt bei Christian Friedrich Solbrig in Leipzig), 1797. 8vo. XII, LII, (53)-235, (1) pp. Contemporary ochre-coloured boards with spine label. All edges red. First edition, independently published as the first part of Kant's "Metaphysik der Sitten" (followed by the second part, "Die Metaphysischen Anfangsgründe der Tugendlehre", later the same year). "Kant's final, detailed account of ethics" (cf. Ueberweg III, 540) is considered the sum of the Kantian philosophy of law; on it Kantian scholarship has based its interpretation of Kant's thinking about right and wrong (cf. Ritter, Der Rechtsgedanke Kants). The present copy does not include the series title which (according to Natorp, Akademie-Ausgabe) was obviously pasted before the finished book belatedly, but contains the errata and the colophone not present in all copies (cf. Warda, p. 61, note 18). - Binding somewhat rubbed and duststained; corners bumped. Paper somewhat browned as usual, with occasional light staining. Provenance: from the collection of the Göttingen historian Georg Friedrich Sartorius von Waltershausen (1765-1828) with his handwritten ownership "Sartorius" in ink to the front pastedown. In 1809 Goethe was godfather to Sartorius's second son, the later geologist Wolfgang Sartorius, a close friend of Gauss. Warda 171. Adickes 90. Akademie-Ausg. VI, 518ff.
