[Click Below for Full Description]

Jean Francois de Galaup La Perouse
Paris, 1797. This engraving is from Jean Francois de Galaup La Perouse's "Atlas du Voyage de La Perouse" It was printed in Paris by l'Imperimerie de la Republique in 1797. This engraving is from the atlas volume of the first edition of the official account of the famous but ill-fated voyage of La Perouse. --- "La PÃ rouse's expedition was one of the most important scientific explorations ever undertaken to the Pacific and the west coast of North America . The charge to the expedition [which took place between 1785 and 1788] was to examine such parts of the region as had not been explored by Captain Cook; to seek for an interoceanic passage; to make scientific observations on the various countries, peoples, and products; to obtain reliable information about the fur trade and the extent of Spanish settlements in California; and to promote the inducements for French enterprise in that quarter . La PÃ rouse and his men did important geographical research . The voyage also included the first foreign scientific group ever to visit Alta California [two of the plates depict a beeeater and a male and female partridge of California. There are also maps and plans of San Francisco, Monterery, and San Diego] . La PÃ rouse sent dispatches back to France from Kamchatka and Botany Bay. The two ships then set sail from Botany Bay, in 1788, and were never heard from again." (Hill) --- When it became clear that something had happened to the expedition, a decision was made to publish the journals he had transmitted home. It was not until the 1820s that the wrecks of his ships were discovered o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Lyell (1797-1875), géologue britannique, ami de Darwin. Il a beaucoup travaillé sur la stratigraphie. L.A.S., Londres, 2 février 1852, 3p in-8. HAWKINS, Joseph
Troy [N.Y.]: for the author by Luther Pratt, 1797. 1797 SLAVE Trade Joseph Hawkins Voyages to AFRICA American Shipwrecks Igbo RAREOne of the best, earliest accounts of American slave tradeJoseph Hawkins was an 18th-century American ship officer who is primarily known for leading expeditions to Africa to capture slaves for trading. 'History of a Voyage to the Coast of Africa' is a primary, first-hand account of the strategies and implementations of a slave runner in colonial America. Hawkins wrote this book to provide details of his adventures to a friend; however, the work would explode with popularity - both positive and negative - throughout American and Great Britain. This 1797 second edition was published in Troy, New York, includes fascinating stories and anecdotes of daring slave escapes, shipwrecks, and the relationship of Americans with the leaders of the Igbo nation in West Africa. This book is also one of the best and most authoritative sources on the Igbo people, their customs and culture, and the warfare they engaged in with other African tribes.Item number: #9909Price: $950HAWKINS, JosephHistory of a voyage to the coast of Africa, and travels into the interior of that country; containing particular descriptions of the climate and inhabitants, and interesting particulars concerning the slave tradeTroy [N.Y.] : Printed for the author, by Luther Pratt, 1797. SCHENSTRÖM, Magnus [resp.] and Eric Michael FANT, [praese.]
1797. Two works in one volume, 4to; [vi], [3]-8; pp. [ii], 36, [4]; with woodcut printers device on title, and woodcut head-piece, folding letterpress table and extremely large folding hand-coloured engraved map, 25 x 150cms and signed 'E. Akerland'; title-page of Dissertatio a little foxed with further light foxing; Afhandling lightly foxed and soiled, with dampstain affecting the upper corners between pp. 13-29; folding map neatly remounted on new stub; A bound volume containing both Schenström's Latin dissertation 'Dissertatio de canalibus et catarractis in Svecia generatim, speciatim vero Strömshomensibus', together with the much expanded Swedish translation of the same year, and which graphically illustrates this feat of Swedish canal building engineering through the the finely engraved and extensive folding map, nearly one and a half metres long, and which shows the entire stretch of the structure. Work on the 62 mile long canal, intended to facilitate the transport of iron bar produced by the numerous steel works along the waterway, began in 1772 and was based upon plans by Johan Ullström. He was commissioned by the State mining authority (the Bergskollegium) to plan its construction, and concluded that he could use and connect existing lakes and waterways from Norra Barken and Smedjebacken to lake Mälaren in the south, meaning that a section of only 10km would have to be excavated manually. The overall difference in height of the water level over the length of the canal is 100 metres, requiring boats to pass through 26 locks. Indeed the rise or fall at Hallstahammer … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEAUCLERK, Lady Diana (1734-1808), illustrator. DRYDEN, John (1631-1700).
London: printed by T. Bensley, for J. Edwards, no. 77, and E. Harding, no. 98, Pall Mall, 1797. First Editions. Folio, (370 x 257mm), pp. [iv], xviii, 241, with nine engraved plates and fourteen part page engravings; engraved frontispiece and pp. [vii], [i], 35, [1], with four further engraved plates and four part page engravings, in parallel text, most of the paper guards still present at the plates, A good copy in an Irish binding of these two works lavishly illustrated by Lady Diana Beauclerk. The daughter of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, Lady Di, as she was known, suffered two miserable marriages, the first to Frederick St. John, 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke, during which they were both notoriously unfaithful, and the second to Topham Beauclerk (1739-1780), the great-grandson of Nell Gwyn and Charles II. Beauclerk was a close friend of Dr. Johnson and was known for his brilliant conversation, but he was also famous for his ill-humour and lack of personal hygiene: Fanny Burney recorded Edmund Burke's reaction to the death of Beauclerk: 'I never, myself, so much enjoyed the sight of happiness in another, as in that woman when I first saw her after the death of her husband'. 'During [the years following her divorce] Lady Diana's artistic talents became particularly evident: she practised portraiture, and her enormous output of small drawings of fat cupids entangled in branches of grapes and little girls wearing mob caps gave place to larger and more ambitious groups of peasantry introduced into landscaped backgrounds. She worked chiefly in pen and ink, pastel, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

MOFFAT, James.
1797. A rare caricature of domestic strife, Calcutta-printed by Scottish printmaker James Moffat (1775-1815), better known for his Indian topographical views popular among British colonial residents in India. A woman, dressed in a short shift, angrily pulls a bottle from the hand of a drunken man, who sits with his right fist raised and a cigar hanging from his mouth as smoke billows around his head. He holds onto a bottle with his left hand, a glass and pile of cigars at his elbow. The woman points with her left hand to a clock on the wall which shows the time as five past five. In the background on the left, a dark-faced, cloaked figure stands before the curtained doorway on the left.'Moffat was a Scotsman who arrived in India aged only 14, living in Calcutta from 1789 to 1815. He appears to have learnt his profession of drawing and engraving in India. According to Wynyard Wilkinson ('The Makers of Indian Colonial Silver', London, 1987, p. 137) he was apprenticed as an engraver to the silversmith John Ludvig Jacobi in 1789, and then worked from 1794-1804 for another silversmith John Mair and his successor firms, while engraving and publishing his own views. An advertisement in the 'Calcutta Gazette' in 1797 offering to produce 'Picturesque copper-plate engravings' led to a series of views of Calcutta and its environs.' TARAYRE
Marcillac: 1797. (TARAYRE Jean-Joseph) BLARY (?) [Click Below for Full Description]

Wolfstieg I, 6367 Caillet I, 772 Erster Band der ersten Ausgabe des berühmten Werkes des Jesuiten Augustin Barruel (* 2. Oktober 1741 in Villeneuve de Berg, heute zum Département Ardèche 5. Oktober 1820 in Paris). LEBRUN, Jean Baptiste Pierre
1797. vi, 82 pp. 8vo (190 x 122 mm.), attractive green antique half-calf marbled boards, spine gilt. [Paris: Desenne, An VI or 1797]. An uncommon work by the influential art dealer and advisor to the Louvre commission. Lebrun (1748-1813), the prominent Parisian art dealer, leading connoisseur of Dutch and Flemish art, and husband of the court painter Vige Lebrun, played an outsized role in the creation of the Louvre. He was essential in the compilation of desiderata lists for the French confiscations of art in conquered territories throughout Europe. Then, once the artworks arrived in Paris, Lebrun was charged with their cataloguing and integration. The present publication is Lebrun's catalogue of the first group of artworks looted from Italy, then displayed at the Musum national (the Louvre) in 1797. It begins with a lengthy Avant-Propos by the author in which he praises the revolutionary government, while clearly asserting that he deserves a significant role in shaping the new national museum. In the main section of this book, he provides colorful descriptions of each painting with lengthy discussions of attribution drawing on Lebrun's vast experience as the pre-eminent paintings dealer in Paris. As with most French confiscations, the locations from which the works were seized are noted as well. This exhibition included the works of Raphael, Garofalo, Titian, Correggio, Schedoni, Guercino, Albani, Guido Reni, Domenichino, B. Luini, Lucas van Leyden, Veronese, etc. Very good copy. The last two preliminary leaves are misbound at the end of the work. En … [Click Below for Full Description]

1797. Jefferson Thomas John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, & 5th U.S. Congressmen Deliberate on 1797 Vessel Registration & Salt Tax President John Adams, Vice President Thomas Jefferson, and 5th U.S. Congressmen deliberate on 1797 vessel registration & salt tax 2pp printed broadside announcing passage of two acts of legislation passed in the Fifth Congress, the first on June 27, 1797 and the second on July 8, 1797. The broadside features the printed signatures of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Jonathan Dayton, and William Bradford. It is inlaid into a slightly larger sheet. In very good condition, with light overall toning and professional restoration along folds. The larger sheet measures 7.875" x 12.25". The first act stipulated that American vessels, even though they might be seized by foreign powers, could not be given new registration. The second act concerned an increase of an existing salt tax to generate federal income. The July 8, 1797 legislation authorized a 66% tax increase on salt after September 30, 1797. American and foreign ships were already taxed 12 cents per bushel of salt, and the July 8, 1797 law would raise it 8 cents to a total of 20 cents per bushel. Foreign salt cargo was taxed an additional 10%. Section 2 permitted a "drawback" or reduction of the tax to the New England dried and pickled fish industries. An 1851 published account of 5th U.S. Congress proceedings shows that congressmen vigorously debated the advantages and disadvantages of the salt tax in the days immediately preceding the law's p … [Click Below for Full Description]

La Pérouse, Jean-François de Galaup (1741-1788?):
Paris, I'Imprimerie de la Republique 1797. 4 vols. Modern Quarter-linen bindings, 4to [295 x 235mm]. Paris, L'Imprimerie de la Republique, 1797. LXXII, 346, 398, 422, 309 pp. With engraved portrait of the author on the frontispiece. The accompanying atlas is missing. In very good condition. FIRST EDITION of the narrative of the famous La Pérouse expedition of the late 18th century, which ended tragically with loss of all traces of the the crew's two ships. Out of the desire to complete the works of British explorer James Cook, France organizes an official expedition to explore a part of the American northeastern coast. The king Louis XVI confines this mission to Jean-François de Galaup, comte de la Pérouse (1741-1788?). He and his crew leave from Brest in 1785, onboard two ships: „La Bousolle“ and „La Astrolabe“. Their voyage crosses through territories such as Hawaii, Alaska, California, the Easter Island, Chile, the Sandwich islands, Manilla, New Zealand, Japan, Australia. In 1788, communication with the expedition and its crew is lost, and this is the year when the ships are thought to have sinked. However, from Kamchatka (1787) La Pérouse dispatched a messenger to travel across Russia with his writings. Therefore, although he and his crew disappeared after sailing north from Botany Bay on 10 March 1788, the government in France was able to publish the greater part of his records. Darwin, Erasmus
Philadelphia: Printed by T. Dobson, at The Stone House, 1797. First American Edition. A New Edition. xxiv, 486; [8], 539pp. 2 vols. 8vo (8-1/4 x 5-3/4 inches). Original quarter sheep and red leather title labels on spine, marbled boards, uncut. First American Edition. A New Edition. xxiv, 486; [8], 539pp. 2 vols. 8vo (8-1/4 x 5-3/4 inches). UNCUT, IN ORIGINAL BINDING. "As a physician Erasmus Darwin was widely recognized as England's finest medical doctor. He was asked several times to be personal physician to King George, although his lack of respect for the monarchy in general and George in particular made this an easy offer to refuse. Much of the philosophy central to Erasmus Darwin's medical beliefs is laid out in his treatise on animal life, Zoonomia. Although his views were loaded down with incorrect 18th-century ideas and assumptions,... he was generally able to improve the lives of many of his patients using common-sense ideas such as a balanced diet, the practice of basic hygiene and the cleaning and dressing of wounds. He was considered progressive in that he believed in a connection between his patient's state of mind and their general health, and was one of the first physicians to espouse sympathetic treatment of mental patients, who at the time were kept in deplorable conditions... Most of Zoonomia is made up of a Linneaus-inspired classification of all diseases and treatments known at that time. Erasmus tries to arrange them into distinct species, genera, families and ultimately into four broad classes: diseases of irritation (from external sources), sensatio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mueller, Konrad, or Margaretha Pfaden-Hauerin
Keuth an der Crassen, 1797. Full Blindstamped Calf. Good. A fine Folk Art manuscript prayer book from the late eighteenth century. 8vo. 17.5 by 10.5 cm. 516, [13], [1] pp. With eight full page paintings, plus vignette decoration throughout, much pretty floral ornamentation, but also a serpent, a basilisk, etc. Most writing is a neat, now archaic cursive, but headings and the like rendered in an easily readable, ornamental Fraktur Gothic. The paintings are the highlight, most will find. Their subject matter is quintessential and perhaps not unusual or original -- Momento Mori, St. George slaying the dragon, etc. -- but the execution is done with uncommon polish. The authorship is stated, but also a tad confusing. Our interpretation is that a Konrad Mueller created the book for Margaretha Pfaden-Hauerin. Condition: moderate wear to contemporary full calf binding. Unusual is a 13 page "Register", or Table of Contents, in the rear. By unusual, we mean for such a manuscript prayer book. Also a page of handwritten genealogical notes written on a prior blank leaf, and written much later, in the mid to late 19th Century.Moderate, sometimes heavy, soiling to margins of leaves. Corner cut out of front endpaper. Some loose gatherings.
