The state of the poor: or, an history of the labouring classes in England, from the conquest to the present period; . together with parochial reports . With a large appendix; .

London Printed by J. Davis for B. & J. White; G. G. & J. Robinson; T. Payne; R. Faulder; T. Egerton; J. Debrett; and D. Bremner 1797 - First edition. Three volumes, 4to., complete with half titles to all volumes, directions to the binder (end of vol. 1) and the supplementary leaf 3L3 in volume 2, and sheets 5B*–5B†4 in volume 3 as called for in the directions to the binder, folding table, modern half calf gilt, an excellent example. A remarkable work by a follower of Adam Smith. Sir Frederick Eden (1766 – 1809), was one of the founders of the Globe Insurance Company and later its chairman, however he is best known as a social investigator. His reputation for this rests on The State of the Poor. He explained the circumstances that led him to do the research: "The difficulties which the labouring classes experienced, from the high price of grain, and of provisions in general, as well as of cloathing [sic] and fuel, during the years 1794 and 1795, induced me, from motives both of benevolence and personal curiosity, to investigate their conditions in various parts of the kingdom." The book was intended to provide a factual basis for the current debate on what to do about the poor. "[The State of the Poor] was written from a perspective that reveals Eden's general adherence to Adam Smith's system of natural liberty in economic affairs; this led Karl Marx to claim that Eden was the only eighteenth-century disciple of Smith to produce a work of any significance." (Donald Winch, ODNB). Eden did some of the field-work himself, obtained information from clergymen but also sent out "a remarkably faithful and intelligent person" with a questionnaire he had designed. This was modelled on that used by Sir John Sinclair in his Statistical Account of Scotland. Einaudi 1714; Goldsmiths' 17107; Kress B.3384; PMM 249. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Labarère, 1146 - Dendaletche, 1435 - Béraldi, Cent ans, I, 43-44 - Caillau-Lamicq, II-297). NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

"Pinel's contemporaries regarded him as a master of internal medicine, a reputation based upon the authoritative classification of diseases that he set out in his Nosographie philosophique. Pinel's nosological work should be viewed in the context of the great eighteenth-century concern with classification. He was aware of the difficulties that his predecessors had faced, but he approached his task cheerfully, secure in his belief that a disease was "an indivisible whole from its commencement to its conclusion, a regular ensemble of characteristic symptoms". Since these symptoms could be observed and analyzed, a classification of disease was possible. Pinel thus divided diseases into fives classes : fevers, phlegmasias, hemorrhages, neuroses and diseases caused by organic lesions. He classified phelgmasias by the structure of the affected membranes (or tissues). Among the fourth classe, neuroses, Pinel included not only psychiatric illnesses, but also diseases of the sense organs, spasmodic visceral disorders and dysfunctions of the genital organs. He composed the Nosographie as a textbook. In his Traité des membranes of 1800, Bichat acknowledged the influence of Pinel's book on his own work".

Principaux membres : Lamarck, Brongniart, Vauquelin, Chappe, Lacroix, Berthollet, Fourcroy, Monge, Prony, Laplace, Haüy, Cuvier, Larrey, Bouillon-Lagrange, Lacépède, Chaptal, Biot, Deleuze, Sennebier. Bel exemplaire.

AN ACCOUNT OF ROMAN ANTIQUITIES DISCOVERED AT WOODCHESTER IN THE COUNTY OF GLOUCESTER.

Sold by Cadell & Davies, B.& J. White, Edwards, Payne, Robson, Nicol, Elmsley, and Leigh & Sotheby.London 1797 - Large elephant folio, (17 x 23 inches). Hand-coloured engraved title + hand-coloured dedication plate to King George III + [ii] + 20 pp. text in English + 20 pp. + [iv] + 21 pp. text in French + 35 finely finished , hand-coloured, etched and/or aquatinted plates, of which 9 are double-page, 5 uncoloured engraved plates, and large engraved head- and tail-piece, 40 plates in total. Contemporary half red morocco gilt over marbled boards. In 1793 Samuel Lyson commenced the extensive excavations which still today are the main source of our knowledge of the villa. These took place over three years and in 1797 Lysons was able to publish the results of his work in his book "Account of the Roman Antiquities discovered at Woodchester in the County of Gloucester." He also found a number of very fine marble sculptural fragments, including the headless statue of Diana Luna, with the sacrificial bull at her feet, which are now in the British Museum. The quality of the carving is exceptional for statues found in British villas and these finds indicate the luxurious character of the villa. These very fine aquatint illustrations include three coloured aquatint views of Woodchester, two of which are double-page. Samuel Lysons was one of the first archaeologists to investigate the Roman sites in Britain, as well as being a leading intellectual of his time and a benefactor of the British Museum, to which he donated many artifacts. Between 1793 and 1796, he undertook extensive excavations of Roman ruins which were published with his illustrations in 1797.That year he was made a fellow of the Royal Society and later served as its vice-president and treasurer. He was also an antiquary professor in the Royal Academy 1818.Woodchester is most famous for its magnificent Orpheus mosaic, the largest in Britain and perhaps the most intricate.         [EXTENSIVE RUN OF THE FIRST SESSION LAWS PASSED IN THE NEW STATE OF KENTUCKY]

Lexington, 1797. Seven volumes, described below. Expertly bound to style in half russia and period marbled boards, red morocco labels. Condition detailed individually below. Light scattered foxing and soiling throughout volumes, but overall very good. An incredibly rare run of the first laws of the newly- admitted state of Kentucky, and some of the earliest imprints in the state. The first five volumes were printed in Lexington by John Bradford, and the remaining two were printed by James H. Stewart. John Bradford (1749-1830) was a Virginian who moved to Kentucky in 1779, working as a land surveyor the following year. Despite a complete lack of experience as a printer, Bradford and his brother, Fielding, founded a newspaper in Lexington to support the cause of Kentucky's separation from Virginia. The first issue of the KENTUCKY GAZETTE appeared in August 1787. For the next eight years the GAZETTE was the only newspaper within 500 miles. From 1792 to 1798, excepting for the year 1796, Bradford held the contract for official state printing. These laws represent a significant piece not only of his early printing history, but indeed the early printing history of the entire region, and the first printing in the Trans-Appalachian region. The first session of laws includes acts concerning the selection of officials to represent Kentucky in the federal government, taxes, the division of counties, establishing a land office, and monies set aside for the expenses of the state printer. These are followed in later sessions by laws regarding the regulation of the militia, courts, and an act approved Dec. 6, 1792, "more effectually to prevent persons dealing with slaves." McMurtrie provides a detailed list of session laws for the first eighteen Kentucky state legislative sessions, from 1792 to 1810. He dates the final two volumes of the present set (printed by James Stewart) to 1797. For the most part each item is located in only one or two copies. Most but not all are held by the University of Chicago, and the Harvard Law Library holds a fair number. Early Kentucky imprints are incredibly rare on the market, and a run such as this is unheard of. In detail, the titles are as follows: 1) ACTS PASSED AT THE FIRST SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, FOR THE COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY.... Lexington: John Bradford, [1792]. 52pp. Contemporary ownership inscription at head of first page. Pp.41-44 in expert facsimile. McMURTRIE (KENTUCKY) 14. BRISTOL B8039.

Un volume, 4to, full green morocco, triple gilt fillet enclosing a gilt floral roll on the boards, smooth gilt tooled and gilt-lettered back, all edges gilt, 19th century binding by Lortic. One of the 150 copies on Angoulême vellum paper, with 4 wonderful before letters proofs engraved by Prud'hon (French painter, 1758-1823).         La geometria del compasso

Pietro Galeazzi, 1797.

THE AMERICAN ACCOMPTANT; BEING A PLAIN, PRACTICAL AND SYSTEMATIC COMPENDIUM OF FEDERAL ARITHMETIC; IN THREE PARTS: DESIGNED FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS, AND SPECIALLY CALCULATED FOR THE COMMERCIAL MERIDIAN OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Lansingburgh: Printed by William W. Wands, 1797. 12mo, contemporary full brown calf; spine ruled in gilt; black morocco spine label, gilt. Frontispiece engraving of coins in current usage in the U.S. by A. Reed; 297, (15) pages. Marginal wear to frontispiece, with recto carefully repaired and reinforced with tissue, into which has been left a window through which is revealed an original ownership inscription. Minimal browning. Detailed early ownership inscriptions. Joints weak, but holding; moderate staining to covers. Very good. This early American accounting and bookkeeping manual contains what is generally believed to be the first appearance in print of the dollar sign ($). It also includes, as a frontispiece, an engraving depicting a 1795 U.S. eagle, which Eric Newman has called "the earliest known illustration of a United States coin." Also included on the engraving are the Spanish pistole, French "guinea," British guinea, and Portuguese Johannes and half moidore. The book consists of a series of practical lessons for clerks. The dollar sign, which appears on page 56 for the first time and then throughout the volume, is a typographical approximation based upon the handwritten dollar sign used by some during the period. It resembles our own, but also differs from it. Much as a typographical ampersand is much more stylized than most of our handwritten ampersands, this initial attempt at a dollar sign in type is less a strict representation of the handwritten sign than an attempt to establish a similar sign for more formal treatment in type. A very scarce volume, of exceptionally high importance, with at least one copy bringing over $3000 at a K&F auction. For a fascinating, if at times controversial, overview of the history of the dollar sign, see Eric P. Newman's "The Dollar $ign: Its Written and Printed Origin" in America's Silver Dollars (New York: ANS, 1995). Evans 32366: "It is claimed that this work was the first to use the dollar mark, $." Howes L196 (aa): "First book to adopt the dollar sign.".

«Rousseau's most important political treatise was The Social Contract (1762), a political matrix and symbol of a wider shift in ideas about the nature of reality, the self, and politics in Western society (W. Gairdner, Jean - Jacques Rousseau and the Romantic Roots of Modern Democracy, in: "Humanitas"?, vol. 12, 1999, p. 77). «Furthermore, The Social Contract also appears to concur with the argument in Political Economy that the proper politicization of passions is their salvation. While Rousseau offers many criticisms of citizens' private desires, he has none to offer of the general will, the expression of the citizens' public desires. The general will, he contends, is "always right and always tends toward the public utility"?. The only problem is that the citizens do not always discern the public good, and "only then does it appear to want what is bad"?. Elaborating on this argument a few pages later, Rousseau contrasts private desire with public desire: "Private individuals see the good they reject, the public wants the good it does not see"?. In other words, whereas individuals may purposely hold on to desires for bad things, the public only desires such things out of ignorance. Rousseau concludes this argument by asserting the need for a legislator who will enlighten the public, but the point here is the distinction he has drawn between private and public passion. Apparently, in the move from "I desire"? to "we desire"?, desire itself is redeemed from any harmful intentions. The "dangerous disposition from which all our vices arise"? is "transform[ed] into a sublime virtue"?. Although one might argue that Rousseau does not fully explain why the general will is by definition virtuous, it is clear that the key to its virtue is its generality, its link to the common interest. The private will, he says, "tends by its nature toward preferences, and the general will toward equality"?. The general will is also, of course, the guarantee of the citizens' freedom. Since equality and freedom are among the supreme virtues in Rousseau's thought, we can begin to see why he praises the citizens' public passion» (C. Hall, Reason, Passion and Politics in Rousseau, in: "Polity"?, vol. 34, 2001, p. 69 e sgg.). OCLC, 39830977. ICCU, ITICCUTO0E06722. Torna a 4 nervi.

Parma, Fratelli Gozzi, 1797

Fratelli Gozzi, 1797. in - 8, pp. (8), 141, (3), leg. orig. cart. marmorizz. (dorso rinforzato). Perfetto esempl., a pieni margini.
