Coloured figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms.

      - London, printed by J. Davis and sold by the Author, 1797-1803, (1815). 3 volumes. Folio (320 x 200mm). With 440 hand-coloured engraved plates on 436 leaves. Later gilt ornamented half calf with red and green gilt lettered labels, marbled sides. The most attractive illustrated English work on mycology ever published, and a famous classic in its field. It was Sowerby himself who did the drawing and engraving of the plates, which are all beautifully handcoloured. James Sowerby sometimes printed the plate in a colour other than black. Our copy includes the rare supplement which is often lacking. "James Sowerby dedicated his 'Coloured figures of English fungi' to Sir Joseph Banks and J.E. Smith jointly. 'To the first of these gentleman', wrote Sowerby 'I have great obligations for granting me access to the first library in the world, as well as most ready assistance in any enquiry whatever relating to natural history'" (Henry, British Botanical and Horticultural Lit. II, p. 263). A fine and unusually fresh copy without any foxing to the plates.Provenance: bookplate of Arpad Plesch, famous collector of botanical books.Nissen BBI, 1874; Stafleu & Cowan 12.490.         History of British Birds. The figures engraved on wood by T. Bewick.

Newcastle, Printed by Sol. Hodgson/ Edward Walker, 1797-1804. 2 volumes. 8vo (210 x 125mm). pp. (2), xxx, 335, (1), with 208 wood-engravings; pp. xx, 400 with 240 wood-engravings. Contemporary green morocco, richly gilt decorated spines with gilt lettering, gilt panelled sides, inside dentelles, gilt edges. A superbly bound copy by Zaehnsdorf, one of the finest London bookbinders of the period. Signature of Mrs. N.D. Bewick on free endpaper. Rare first edition and the best possible copy one can possible get. Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) is best known for his 'History of British Birds', which is admired today mainly for its wood engravings, especially the small, sharply observed, and often humorous vignettes known as tail-pieces. He is credited with popularising, a technical innovation in the printing of illustrations using wood. He adopted metal-engraving tools to cut hard boxwood across the grain, producing printing blocks that could be integrated with metal type, but were much more durable than traditional woodcuts. The result was high quality illustration at a low price. The text of the first volume deals with 'Land Birds' is by Beilby and the second volume 'Water Birds' is by Bewick. All the wood engravings are by Bewick.//Zimmer p. 57; Nissen IVB, 95.

The Complaint and the Consolation; or, Night Thoughts.

      - London: R. Noble, 1797. Large 4to, pp. 69/70, with a full-page engraving by Blake surrounding the letterpress text. A loose sheet, fore-edges untrimmed (some still with deckle), minimal trimming to top and bottom edges. Only five leaves in the book have engravings recto and verso. First edition, perfect for display or for teaching as the leaves are quite sturdy and can be carefully handled or matted for framing. Blake, virtually in a frenzy, completed 537 watercolor designs when he was commissioned to illustrate Young's masterpiece. The publisher only issued the first four 'Nights'and had Blake engrave (and partially etch) 43 plates to test the market. The response must have been poor since no further engravings were requested of Blake. Ironically, today the poet Young, once compared with Shakespeare and Milton, is forgotten save for this edition.

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Edmund of the Forest. An historical Novel. In four Volumes. By the Author of Cicely, or the Rose of Raby.

for William Lane, Minerva Press,, London 1797 - First edition of this rare Minerva Press novel, an extravagant gothic tale set in medieval Scotland. A notice in the Critical Review of November 1797 was unable to identify its author positively but compared it with Musgrave's first novel, Cicely (1795). 'The author has allowed her or his imagination a wider scope, but has plunged into a series of adventures in rapid succession, which defy all possibility of belief . Horrors are multiplied on horrors, new characters on new characters, until the reader is bewildered in a maze . The story is supposed to have happened in the reign of James III. of Scotland; and the agency of witchcraft is introduced in compliment to that monarch's credulity . The scene is, indeed, a copy from Macbeth's visit to the witches; but it wants the additional charm of Shakespeare's genius. With such helps as witches, ghosts, caverns, and ruined castles, we should be too scrupulous in expecting probability: but there are bounds even to fiction .'Vol II contains a final advert for the second edition of Cicely, or the Rose of Raby, 'just published' [1796]. Unlike Cicely, Edmund did not receive a second edition, though it appeared in French in 1798 and an extract, entitled The Adventure James III of Scotland had with the weird Sisters was reprinted in the 1799 collection Gothic Stories. Indeed, more than one version of the story appeared in early nineteenth-century fiction, implying some influence. 4 vols, 12mo (168 × 100 mm), pp. [2], iv, 252; [2], 269, [1]; [2], 288; [2], 288. Engraved frontispiece to vol. 1 Vol. 1: leaves F 4-6 torn across without loss, worm track to blank upper inner margin of last 12 leaves; vol. 2: 40 mm tear with no loss, affecting a rule but not text, a few leaves in quire B sprung (but secure); vol. 3: lower forecorner of one leaf torn away, not touching text; vol. 4: light staining to foremargins towards the end. Overall, very clean and fresh. Contemporary quarter calf, vellum tips, gilt ruled spines, red morocco lettering pieces, black circular numbering pieces. Slight rubbing and very minor chipping. Armorial bookplates of John, 4th Duke of Atholl. A very nice copy. [Blakey, p.181. Garside, Raven and Schöwerling 1797: 60.       Parma, Fratelli Gozzi, 1797, - in-8, pp. (8), 141, (3), leg. orig. cart. marmorizz. (dorso rinforzato). The Second Edition, Improved, Corrected, and Continued to the Present Time. [ Twelve Volume Set, Complete: Volumes I - XII, 1797 - 1801 Edition ]

      W. Bristow, on the Parade, Cantebury 1797 - A very good copy of the complete twelve-volume, stated second ("improved, corrected .") edition (first issue: with initial publication in 1797 or, as printed on the title page: MDCCXCVII). As noted, bindings are three quarter (green) leather with marbled boards and marbled endpapers, with five raised bands and gilt devices and gilt lettering to the spines. The text of each volume is wholly unmarked, pristine. Some minor shelf-wear to the base of the volumes, but the bindings are remarkably strong and solid, with no splitting of the gutters and thus no wobbling to any of the boards. Some incipient splitting of portions of the leather at the spine seams of volumes IX, XI and XII, else minor wear and rubbing/abrasions of the leather at the crowns of the spines of about five of the volumes: unobtrusive, but noticeable. Volumes are uniform in binding characteristics, with dates of publication as follows: Volumes I, II, II: 1797 (MDCCXCVII);Volumes IV, V, and VI: 1798 (MDCCXCVIII); Volumes VII and VIII: 1799 (MDCCXCIX); Volumes IX, X, and XI: 1800 (MDCCC); and Volume XII: 1801 (MDCCCI). All in all an astonishingly well-preserved copy of the complete second edition.         Moravian missionary and Indian agent John Heckwelder reports on the news of a Lenape chief who allied himself with the United States during the Revolutionary War

Baltimore, December 9, 1797. 6.5" x 8". "Letter Twice Signed, ""John Heckewelder,"" 1 page, 6.5"" x 8"", Baltimore, December 9, 1797, addressed in his hand on the integral transmittal leaf to ""William Holmes (an Indian) Philadelphia."" Expected folds, light soiling, else very good.Heckwelder writes in full: ""Inclosed is my Certificate [not present] of the Death of the late Indian Chieff [sic] called (the Big Cat) The Papers you left in pledge with Mr. Van Veach, together with your Note of Doll[ars] 20 which was to be paid before the Papers should be delivered up; are sent to a Gentleman of our Society & from Nazareth) now in Philadelphia (a Mr. Jacob Eyerly) Member of Assembly who has taken Lodgings at Mr Leshers Tavern in Second Street near the Corner of Race Street, where you may receive them on paying the above Sum, as Mentioned in the Note.""John Heckwelder (1743-1823) was born in Bedford, England, emigrating to Pennsylvania in 1754. He apprenticed as a cooper, but following a visit to Ohio with a colonial Indian agent, he began working for several Moravian missions in Pennsylvania in 1762. In 1771 Heckwelder became a full-time evangelist to the Indians, working as an assistant to Moravian missionary David Zeizberger (1721-1808) for fifteen years. His extensive knowledge of Native America affairs brought him to the notice of the newly-formed federal government in 1792 when he accompanied General Rufus Putnam to treat with the Indians at Vincennes. The following year the War Department commissioned him to treat with tribes on the Great Lakes, and from 1797 to 1800 he lived in Ohio, working as a postmaster and justice of the peace. In 1810 he retired and spent his later years in literary pursuits, becoming a member of both the American Philosophical Society and the American Antiquarian Society. Perhaps Heckwelder's most important contribution was his work translating the creation myths of the Lenape people and writing on their customs and manners. His published works include Account of the History, Manners, and Customs of the Indian Nations who once inhabited Pennsylvania and the Neighboring States (1818); Narrative of the Mission of the United Brethren among the Delawares and Mohegan Indians (1820); and Names which the Lenni Lenape or Delaware Indians gave to Rivers, Streams, and Localities within the States of Pennsylvania. New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia, with their Signification (1822).Big Cat (d. c. 1797) was the Lenape name for Henque Puschees (and also known as Kelemand or Lieut-Colonel Henry), a Lenape Sachem. During the Revolutionary War, unlike many of the Lenape and other tribes along the Great Lakes, allied himself with the United States. He was a signer of the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and is is mentioned briefly in David Zeisberger's diary on November 17, 1788 ( KAPPLER, Indian Affairs: Laws and Treties, 1904 2:8; Diary of David Zeisberger... 1855, 456-7).         An ecclesiastical history, ancient and modern, from the birth of Christ to the beginning of the present century: In which the rise, progress, and variations of Church power are considered in their connexion with the state of learning and philosophy, and the political history of Europe during that period.

Philadelphia: Pr. by Stephen C. Ustick 6 vols. 8vo (22 cm, 8.625"). I: xxiii, [1 (blank)], [1] pp., pp. xviii–xxxi, [1 (blank)], 420 pp. II: [2] ff., 571, [1 (blank)] pp. III: [2] ff., 456 pp. IV: [2] ff., 510 pp., [1 (blank)] f. V: [2] ff., 496 pp. VI: [2] ff., 387, [1 (blank)], 8 pp., [10] ff.. 1797 Johann Lorenz von Mosheim (1694–755) was a professor of theology at Göttingen and his Institutiones historiae ecclesiasticae "was marked by hitherto unprecedented objectivity and penetration, and he may be considered the first of modern ecclesiastical historians" (ODCC). First published in 1726, this work was originally composed in Latin; Archibald Maclaine made this first of two translations into English in 1764. Of this first, 1797 American edition, vols. II–VI were printed 1798–99. Printed with ample notes, it has a series of chronological tables at the end. An eight- page Vindication of the Quakers disputing Mosheim's view of that denomination is also appended at the end of vol. VI, just before the list of subscribers. These latter include such noted names as John Adams, then President of the United States, and John Jay, then governor of New York. Contemporary sheep, spine modestly gilt with nice gilt-lettered morocco labels and old-fashioned paper library shelf labels; leather scuffed of old and with joints open, sewing holding. Foxing, browning, and staining, variously, the latter obscuring letters in a few places without loss of sense; some endpapers partially detached. Bookplates on some pastedowns. Untattered and a good, useable set.
