Interesting particulars of the glorious victory, obtained over the Batavian fleet, on the 11th of October, 1797 : by the British fleet, Under The Command Of Admiral Duncan. Illustrated with four engravings

Bound in modern marbled paper boards with black and gold leather spine label. 38 pages, 4 hand colored plates, (printed on 2 leaves). Rare. <br> The Battle of Camperdown (known in Dutch as the Zeeslag bij Kamperduin) was an important naval action of the French Revolutionary Wars. In 1797, Admiral Duncan commanded the English fleet against the Dutch fleet led by Admiral De Winter. As commander-in-chief of the North Sea, Admiral Duncan enforced the English blockade of French controlled and allied territories. The Royal Navy had suffered the debilitating Spithead and Nore mutinies earlier that year and its strength was questioned. The French Revolutionary government, sensing an opening, ordered De Winter's fleet to action late in the year with 30,000 troops ready for the invasion of Ireland to support the Irish revolutionary leader, Wolfe Tone. Although the English fleet was outnumbered by the Dutch-French forces, Duncan significantly led his forces through the enemy line to engage them on the leeward side, denying De Winter's forces the possibility of retreat. A long and bloody ship against ship battle proceeded, with the Royal Navy's superior gunners and experience overpowering the Dutch. As a result, the Royal Navy maintained control the seas, averted the invasion and enforced a crippling blockade. This book describes the details of Duncan's glorious victory, the action, casualties and appreciation of Britain. It triumphantly concludes: "And come the three corners of the world in arms, We shall shock them! - Nought shall make us rue, If England to itself do rest but true." - Shakespeare (p. 38).         Georgia Speculation Unveiled; In Two Numbers

Printed by Elisha Babcock, Hartford 1797 - 8vo. 39 pages. Stitched wraps with title page 1. Untrimmed. Light to moderate scattered toning and brown spots. Old clear tape repair and small hole on title page (no loss of text). Remnants of outer wrap on front joint. Dull green strip of linen tape on rear blank joint. The author's statement on the verso of the title page reads, "This pamphlet is an actual, though not a literal answer to the "State of Facts" published by the Georgia Companies (see Howes G 126). It contains the outlines of the present state of Georgia business, and a brief sketch of the arguments on both sides, with such Commentaries as the compass of the work would allow. The general tenor of it, especially that part which treats of the Chancery powers of our Courts, will be found applicable to the cases of all, who have suffered by any kind of Land Speculation."Howes B 471; Evans 31830; DeRenne 278; Sabin 5593. From Wikipedia; The Yazoo land scandal, Yazoo fraud, Yazoo land fraud, or Yazoo land controversy was a massive, real estate fraud perpetrated, in the mid-1790s, by Georgia governor George Mathews[1] and the Georgia General Assembly. Georgia politicians sold large tracts of territory in the Yazoo lands, in what are now portions of the present-day states of Alabama and Mississippi, to political insiders at very low prices in 1794. Although, the law enabling the sales was overturned by reformers the following year, its ability to do so was challenged in the courts, eventually reaching the US Supreme Court. In the landmark decision in Fletcher v. Peck (1810), the Court ruled that the contracts were binding and the state could not retroactively invalidate the earlier land sales. It was one of the first times the Supreme Court had overturned a state law, and it justified many claims for those lands. Some of the lands sold by the state in 1794 had been shortly thereafter resold to innocent third parties, greatly complicating the litigation. In 1802, because of the ongoing controversy, Georgia ceded all of its claims[2] to lands west of its modern border, to the U.S. government, in exchange for which the government paid cash and assumed the legal liabilities. Claims involving the land purchases were not fully resolved until legislation passed in 1814 established a claims-resolution fund. The Yazoo land fraud is often conflated with the Pine Barrens speculation, another land scandal which took place in east Georgia at about the same time. In this case, the state's high-ranking officials were making multiple gifts of land grants for the same parcels, resulting in the issuance of grants totaling much more land than was available in the state of Georgia.         A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States.

1797 - Published Under Adams's Supervision Adams, John [1735-1826]. A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America, Against the Attack of M. Turgot in His Letter to Dr. Price, Dated the Twenty-Second Day of March, 1778. Philadelphia: Printed by Budd and Bartram, for William Corbett, 1797. Three volumes. 6, xxxiii, [2], 4-392; [iv], 451; [ii] 528, [36] pp. Volume I has six-page subscriber list; copperplate portrait frontispiece not present (see note at end of annotation below). Volume II has half-title, it lacks the blank front endleaf. Final two leaves of Volume III bound in reverse order. Octavo (8" x 5"). Contemporary tree sheep, carefully rebacked retaining spines with lettering pieces and gilt fillets, hinges mended. Light rubbing and a few shallow scuffs and nicks to boards, moderate rubbing to spines and extremities with some wear to corners and spine ends. Light toning to text, somewhat heavier in places, light foxing to some leaves. A notably handsome copy. * Third, final and best edition, the last one published under Adams's supervision. He wrote this fundamental contribution to American political theory when he was the American ambassador at the Court of St. James. First published in London, the Defence was a profound influence on the delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the framers of several post-Revolutionary state constitutions. It also did much to familiarize Europeans with the novel political events taking place in America. Adams intended the Defence to be a one-volume work. He added two more volumes in 1787 and 1788 to offer more examples and address issues raised by critics. The first volume, reprinted from the London edition, was reprinted in New York and Philadelphia in 1787 and Boston in 1788. An abridged two-volume French translation was published in Paris in 1792. The third edition, a corrected reprint of the second and final London edition, 1794, was the only complete three-volume text published in the United States. Many copies have a copperplate portrait frontispiece of Adams in Volume I. But not all. We have seen several copies without one. Also, Cohen's collation does not call for one, though he notes a frontispiece in the London edition of 1794. Close inspection of our copy gives no indication of a now-lost frontispiece, such as o [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE AMERICAN ACCOMPTANT; BEING A PLAIN, PRACTICAL AND SYSTEMATIC COMPENDIUM OF FEDERAL ARITHMETIC; IN THREE PARTS: DESIGNED FOR THE USE OF SCHOOLS, AND SPECIALLY CALCULATED FOR THE COMMERCIAL MERIDIAN OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Lansingburgh: Printed by William W. Wands, 1797. 12mo, contemporary full brown calf; spine ruled in gilt; black morocco spine label, gilt. Frontispiece engraving of coins in current usage in the U.S. by A. Reed; 297, (15) pages. Marginal wear to frontispiece, with recto carefully repaired and reinforced with tissue, into which has been left a window through which is revealed an original ownership inscription. Minimal browning. Detailed early ownership inscriptions. Joints weak, but holding; moderate staining to covers. Very good. This early American accounting and bookkeeping manual contains what is generally believed to be the first appearance in print of the dollar sign ($). It also includes, as a frontispiece, an engraving depicting a 1795 U.S. eagle, which Eric Newman has called "the earliest known illustration of a United States coin." Also included on the engraving are the Spanish pistole, French "guinea," British guinea, and Portuguese Johannes and half moidore. The book consists of a series of practical lessons for clerks. The dollar sign, which appears on page 56 for the first time and then throughout the volume, is a typographical approximation based upon the handwritten dollar sign used by some during the period. It resembles our own, but also differs from it. Much as a typographical ampersand is much more stylized than most of our handwritten ampersands, this initial attempt at a dollar sign in type is less a strict representation of the handwritten sign than an attempt to establish a similar sign for more formal treatment in type. A very scarce volume, of exceptionally high importance, with at least one copy bringing over $3000 at a K&F auction. For a fascinating, if at times controversial, overview of the history of the dollar sign, see Eric P. Newman's "The Dollar $ign: Its Written and Printed Origin" in America's Silver Dollars (New York: ANS, 1995). Evans 32366: "It is claimed that this work was the first to use the dollar mark, $." Howes L196 (aa): "First book to adopt the dollar sign.".

Altri 17 idilli rimasero inediti.La Fonte Ar

[In Greek]: HESIODOU TOU ASKRAIOU TA HEURISKOMENA. HESIODI ASCRAEI OPERA OMNIA. ESIODO ASCREO

[Parma]: Ex Regio Parmesnsi Typographio, 1797. n. This new edition of Bodoni's acclaimed 1785 printing of Hesiod is augmented with an Italian translation praised by Brunet for its beauty. Hesiod is, with Homer, one of the earliest of Greek poets, having lived ca. 700 B.C. Whereas Homer composes for the nobility, Hesiod, a shepherd and farmer, reflects the life of the lowly in his main extant work, "Works and Days." This famous piece contains four parts that lay out ethical, political, and economical rules in connection with agriculture, commerce, navigation, choosing a wife, and educating one's children, often featuring disarmingly practical directives. In the second part, on the practical operation of a farm, there is a significant section devoted to viticulture and wine making. His "Birth of the Gods," the other major work in the present volume, concerns the mythical origins of the gods and heroes; it tells of the war between the Titans and the Olympic gods, gives the stories of Pandora and Prometheus, and examines the four ages of man (Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Iron). Our volume concludes with a short piece, ascribed with some doubt to Hesiod, entitled "The Shield of Hercules." All three works appear in Greek, Latin, and Italian, with commentary in Latin. The Carmelite scholar Giuseppe Maria Pagnini (1737-1814) translated a number of works into Italian for Bodoni from Greek, Latin, French, and English. Greek was his specialty (he held the chair at the University of Pisa in that subject), and he was responsible for Bodoni's Italian versions of Anacreon, Theocritus, Epictetus, and Callimachus, in addition to the present work. Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813) worked for more than 20 years at the Royal press in Parma before obtaining permission to set up his own private press in 1791. Brooks says, "He took his printing in all its branches very seriously, laboured incessantly to perfect his type, had a fine artistic sense, . . . and produced books not only of a very high standard, but also showing a remarkably distinct individuality." Bodoni used the finest quality paper available, and his clear beautiful types have been envied and copied for many generations. "The result of his labours is a long list of books which . . . reach a very high, many of them the highest, level of technical excellence." Although there is no disputing the beauty of their typography and the elegance of their composition, one of the most striking things about Bodoni imprints is their thick, luxurious paper, which has withstood the ravages of time far better than that used in most works of the period. T. M. Cleland give us some insight into the phenomenon: "When it came to paper [Bodoni] preferred what was then called vellum paper and which was made on a woven wire screen invented in England. The paper thus obtained resembled vellum a good deal more than did the papers made on the laid screens which were commonly in use at that time. He had a way, too, of rolling his sheets after they were printed to smooth out the excess of impression left by the forms." The result is remarkably like vellum in look and feel, and in its imperviousness to aging.. 300 x 210 mm. (11 3/4 x 8 1/4"). 1 p.l. (half title), 16, [2], 110 pp.; 279 pp.; 104 pp.Edited and translated into Latin by Bernardo Zamagna; translated into Italian by Giuseppe Maria Pagnini. Contemporary sprinkled calf, covers framed by triple gilt fillets, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with acorn centerpiece accented with fleurons on the side and volutes at the corners, red morocco label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt (inexpert older repairs to head and tail of spine). Title page of each section with engraved portrait of Hesiod. Brooks 689, 690; Brunet III, 141-42; Dibdin II, 38. Very short crack to head of front joint, boards a bit chafed, small patch of worming to front cover, extremities rather rubbed, upper corners somewhat bumped, light freckled foxing to first and last page, first two gatherings with faint dampstain to head edge, a couple of short closed marginal tears, other trivial imperfections, otherwise an excellent copy internally, crisp, clean, and bright with generous margins, in a serviceable binding.       Newcastle, Printed by Sol. Hodgson/ Edward Walker, 1797-1804. 2 volumes. 8vo (210 x 125mm). pp. (2), xxx, 335, (1), with 208 wood-engravings; pp. xx, 400 with 240 wood-engravings. Contemporary green morocco, richly gilt decorated spines with gilt lettering, gilt panelled sides, inside dentelles, gilt edges. A superbly bound copy by Zaehnsdorf, one of the finest London bookbinders of the period. Signature of Mrs. N.D. Bewick on free endpaper. Rare first edition and the best possible copy one can possible get. Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) is best known for his 'History of British Birds', which is admired today mainly for its wood engravings, especially the small, sharply observed, and often humorous vignettes known as tail-pieces. He is credited with popularising, a technical innovation in the printing of illustrations using wood. He adopted metal-engraving tools to cut hard boxwood across the grain, producing printing blocks that could be integrated with metal type, but were much more durable than traditional woodcuts. The result was high quality illustration at a low price. The text of the first volume deals with 'Land Birds' is by Beilby and the second volume 'Water Birds' is by Bewick. All the wood engravings are by Bewick.//Zimmer p. 57; Nissen IVB, 95.

Edmund of the Forest. An historical Novel. In four Volumes. By the Author of Cicely, or the Rose of Raby.

for William Lane, Minerva Press,, London 1797 - First edition of this rare Minerva Press novel, an extravagant gothic tale set in medieval Scotland. A notice in the Critical Review of November 1797 was unable to identify its author positively but compared it with Musgrave's first novel, Cicely (1795). 'The author has allowed her or his imagination a wider scope, but has plunged into a series of adventures in rapid succession, which defy all possibility of belief . Horrors are multiplied on horrors, new characters on new characters, until the reader is bewildered in a maze . The story is supposed to have happened in the reign of James III. of Scotland; and the agency of witchcraft is introduced in compliment to that monarch's credulity . The scene is, indeed, a copy from Macbeth's visit to the witches; but it wants the additional charm of Shakespeare's genius. With such helps as witches, ghosts, caverns, and ruined castles, we should be too scrupulous in expecting probability: but there are bounds even to fiction .'Vol II contains a final advert for the second edition of Cicely, or the Rose of Raby, 'just published' [1796]. Unlike Cicely, Edmund did not receive a second edition, though it appeared in French in 1798 and an extract, entitled The Adventure James III of Scotland had with the weird Sisters was reprinted in the 1799 collection Gothic Stories. Indeed, more than one version of the story appeared in early nineteenth-century fiction, implying some influence. 4 vols, 12mo (168 × 100 mm), pp. [2], iv, 252; [2], 269, [1]; [2], 288; [2], 288.

Parma, Fratelli Gozzi, 1797, - in-8, pp. (8), 141, (3), leg. orig. cart. marmorizz. (dorso rinforzato). Perfetto esempl., a pieni margini. Brunet IV, 1244. Graesse VI, 92. De Backer-Sommervogel VI, 1671.5. Diz. Biogr. Univ. IV, 808. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
