Autograph Letter Signed, in French, 4to, La Grange, Oct. 28, 1820

Lafayette writes to Monsieur Fontanes, Grand Master of the Imperial University in French referencing a candidate for a position within the university. "Monsieur des Cubes Lascaux can be sure that I have his best interest at heart. But I cannot mislead him about the efficacy of steps I could take. I have exhausted the few means I had in the war ministry, and I don't have any means now, not even indirect, in the other departments where my recommendation would just be harmful. I will nevertheless try what may seem to me to offer even the smallest chance. But it would be by way of support rather than taking the initiative that I can offer any hope. My best regards to the whole family, Lafayette." With integral address leaf, in very good condition. During the French Revolution, Lafayette was leader of the Garde Nationale until he was imprisoned for five years. He was released in 1797 but rejected participation in Napoleon's Army. He focused his attention on La Grange, his home outside of Paris and from which he wrote this letter. Four years later, at the invitation of President James Monroe, Lafayette embarked on his popular tour of America returning to his home in 1825. In France, he held the position of member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1815 until his death.

Published by Js. Bretherton, London 1797 - Hand-coloured aquatint by C. Rosenberg after Orde. The second of a pair of images of the `longest and most determined engagement ever fought' (Parker) `The Blanche frigate, Captain R. Faulknor, while off Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadaloupe, on. [4 January 1795], engaged the French frigate Pique. The fight having lasted an hour, the Pique fouled the Blanche , and the Frenchman made several attempts to board, but each time gallantly repulsed. Then the English sailors lashed the bowsprit of the Pique to the stump of the Blanche 's mainmast, and towed her before the wind. To bring more guns into play, part of the stern of the main deck of the Blanche was blown out, but it was not until the action had lasted seven hours. that the Pique surrendered.' (Parker p.111) Cf.

Six fine folding engraved plates. lvi, 207, [1] pp., one leaf with colophon. Large 4to, fine cont. sheep, flat spine prettily gilt, green morocco lettering piece on spine. Bayreuth: Heirs of J.A. Lübeck, 1797. First edition and scarce. Baader (1763-1835), a famous mining expert and Chief of the Bavarian Mining Council, resided in England and Scotland from 1786 to 1794, where he studied the most recent technological developments taking place there, both in mining and metallurgy. While in Edinburgh, he designed a new blasting machine for iron mines which had considerable success and became known as the Baadersches Geblaese. His greatest contribution to science was, however, his devotion, through propaganda and the power of his position, to the building of railways in Bavaria. The present work, written while Baader was director of mining and machinery in Bavaria, is concerned with various kinds of pumps used in mines, to flood brine pools, and to transport brine solutions. These same pumps were used for more than a century to irrigate the famous gardens at the palace of Nymphenburg in Münich. The finely engraved plates depict various parts of the pumps. Fine copy in a very pretty binding from the library of the dukes of Bavaria. With an A.L.s by Baader, dated 24th November 1797, presenting this copy to the then-current Duke. ❧ A.D.B., I, pp. 725-26.         Voyage de La Pérouse autour du monde . rédigé par M. L.A. Milet-Mureau

l'Imprimerie de la République, Paris 1797 - Expertly bound to style in quarter red straight grained morocco over pale pink paper covered boards, the flat spines divided into six compartments by a decorative roll, lettered in the second compartment, the lower compartment with overall decoration created from a roll tool First edition of the official account of the famous but ill-fated voyage: a cornerstone work on Pacific exploration. "La Pérouse's expedition [aboard the frigates Astrolobe and Boussole] was one of the most important scientific explorations ever undertaken to the Pacific and the west coast of North America . The charge to the expedition [which took place between 1785 and 1788] was to examine such parts of the region as had not been explored by Captain Cook; to seek for an interoceanic passage; to make scientific observations on the various countries, peoples, and products; to obtain reliable information about the fur trade and the extent of Spanish settlements in California; and to promote the inducements for French enterprise in that quarter . La Pérouse and his men did important geographical research [including visits to Easter Island, Hawaii, Macao, Formosa, the Aleutian Islands, Samoa, Tonga and Australia.] . The voyage also included the first foreign scientific group ever to visit Alta California [two of the plates depict a bee-eater and a male and female partridge of California. There are also maps and plans of San Francisco, Monterery, and San Diego] . La Pérouse sent dispatches back to France from Kamchatka and Botany Bay. The two ships then set sail from Botany Bay, in 1788, and were never heard from again" (Hill). Thirty-nine years later, in 1825, the wrecks of the two frigates were found at Vanikoro in the Santa Cruz group by Peter Dillon. The La Pérouse voyage is notable for its superb mapping of the Alaska and California coasts (discussed at length by Wagner in Cartography of the Northwest Coast ), including maps of San Diego, Monterey, and the entire Northwest Coast. Of equal importance are the series of charts that were produced as a result of the expedition's surveys of the Asiatic side of the Pacific. The atlas also contains numerous interesting coastal views, as well as botanical and natural history plates. The text contains a wealth of scientific and ethnographic information. In addition, La Perouse was the first westerner to safely navigate and chart the Japan Sea and the strait between the island of Sakhalin and the northernmost island of Japan. En route for Australia in 1788, La Pérouse sailed via Samoa. This work "is one of the finest narratives of maritime exploration ever written, and certainly deserves to hold a place of high honor among the great travel accounts of the eighteenth century" (Howell).         Remarks on the Arabian Night's Entertainments ; in which the Origin of Sindbad's Voyages, and other Oriental Fictions, is particularly considered

      T. Cadell & W. Davies, London 1797 - Octavo, uncut, single leaf errata; a few spots but very good in period style half red morocco. Influential study of the tales of Sindbad and their relation to the imaginary voyage. The poet and antiquary Hole (1746-1803) was a founding member of the Exeter Literary Society, to which he originally delivered this address on the question of historical antecedents to the Oriental tale. Although he begins sceptically, by the end he has talked himself around until he is seized by the belief that 'the narrative had a basis in truth' (DNB). The historian of the imaginary voyage Gove gives the work especial credit as one of the most 'valuable to the study of Sindbad as an imaginary voyage.'.

1797. Beddoes, Thomas (1760-1808). A.L.s. to Dr. [Thomas G.] Girdlestone (1758-1822). Bradford, July 25, [1797 (from postmark)]. 3pp. plus integral cover. 252 x 196 mm. Creased along original folds, light soiling on cover, lacunae repaired along folds and where seal was broken, with loss of one letter. Very good. <p>Beddoes&#39; letter touches on the medicinal properties of nitric acid and discusses his famous Pneumatic Institution for the treatment of disease by inhalation of various gases, which began operation the following year (1798). The letter begins as follows:</p><p>"I was extremely gratified with your Yarmouth case, which I carefully returned to Dr. Babington. I trust it is designed for publication. I shall be curious to learn the sequel. In your last letter you speak of the beneficial effects of nitric acid. I have had some most important communications on the subject which I am going to print, & should be happy to receive a paper from you. . . ."</p><p>Later in the letter Beddoes refers to his "scheme" for the Pneumatic Institution. He thanks Dr. Girdlestone and a Dr. Lubbock</p><p>"for the authority of your names more than for your contributions. Depend upon it the scheme will be executed soon, barring any great public disaster. I have got a committee of great respectability-What I want is a superintendent, who ought to have several uncommon qualifications. That point being secured, the next step will be to circulate an outline for the suggestions of philosophers & physicians."</p><p>Even though Beddoes does not mention the Pneumatic Institution by name here, it is highly improbable that the above paragraph refers to anything else. The "superintendent of uncommon qualifications" that Beddoes ended up hiring was the nineteen-year-old Humphry Davy, who first made his name as a scientist through his investigations, performed in the Pneumatic Institution&#39;s laboratory, of the physiological properties of nitrous oxide gas.</p><p>In a postscript, Beddoes once again returns to the subject of nitric acid: "Could not you who have attended so much to Hepatitis give me something important on the efficacy of nitric acid in liver complaints?"</p><p>Beddoes&#39; correspondent, Dr. Thomas Girdlestone, was a Yarmouth physician who had served in India; he was the author of Essays on the Hepatitis and Spasmodic Affections in India (1787) and several other works.         Manuel du Naturaliste ouvrage utile aux Voyageurs et à ceux qui visitent les Cabinets d&#39;Histoire Naturelle et de Curiosités

Paris: Remont, 1797. Four volumes, octavo; a lovely set in contemporary full calf, spines elegantly gilt with red morocco labels. Voyagers&#39; collecting guide. A fine set of this French natural history encyclopaedia, intended specifically as a guide for voyagers, as well as a handbook for examining the contents of "cabinets" of natural history or of curiosities. In the later part of the eighteenth century the "Cabinet of Curiosity" or small privately-owned museum was flourishing in England and throughout Europe. Many of the exhibits displayed were collected during the great era of voyaging in the Pacific. An interest in natural history was fashionable in the period and this type of reference work would have been essential for the library of the well-educated European. This is the second edition of the book, revised and considerably expanded, which gives a good indication of the level of understanding and knowledge of natural history at that time.

The Works of Alexander Pope Esq. In Nine Volumes, Complete

London: Law, et al., 1797. Nine volumes, octavo, engraved frontispiece; early half blue straight-grained morocco and marbled boards, rubbed, a handsome set. A handsome eighteenth century edition of the complete works of the poet and satirist Alexander Pope.. It contains one of the most important pieces of English literature, An Essay on Man.. This was widely read on publication, and occasioned a response from Voltaire, La Loi Naturelle of 1756. Pope was very attached to the work, and crushed by some of the negative responses it engendered, in particular its demolition by a Swiss professor, Jean-Pierre de Crousaz. Not until his Works were first published in 1735 did Pope firmly claim authorship of the work, commenting: &#39;If I could flatter myself that this Essay has any merit, it is in steering betwixt the extremes of doctrines seemingly opposite, in passing over terms utterly unintelligible, and in forming a temperate yet not inconsistent, and a short yet not imperfect system of Ethics&#39;.

""Although partial histories had been written since, Herrera&#39;s treatise, nearly two-centuries old, remained effectively the last general work on the matter until Muñoz&#39;s time. On July 17, 1779, Charles III formally placed Muñoz with the responsibility of writing a comprehensive history of the Spanish conquest and colonization of the Americas, in an effort to set the record straight, snuff out various apocryphal stories and leyenda negra rumors circulating throughout Europe and defend Spanish territorial rights in America from the encroaching claims of other European powers. Muñoz set about collecting and examining documentary material scattered in various archives throughout Spain and Portugal, with the objective of turning his history into an objective reference work"" (Wikipedia). & & The first volume of the Historia del Nuevo Mundo appeared in 1793, and this English translation was published in 1797. This volume deals almost exclusively with the three voyages of Columbus. Munoz died in 1799 and the work was never completed.& & Corns & Sparke, p. 162; Sabin 51345."

Chez l'?diteur, [1797]., Paris: - 400 pp. First edition; text in French; bound in contemporary quarter brown leather with gold stamping across the spine; 3 plates; 1 fold-out, hand-color, map; ix; 1 errata; 1-400 pp. Binding tight; boards with minor wear; internally fine; see additional images provided. Publication date (An VI) is six years from the Republic (An II is 1792) and not the Revolution (1789); therefore An VI is 1797. Compendium of historical, ethnographic, botanical, and zoological information on French and Dutch Guianas and neighboring regions, with a French-Galibi vocabulary and notes on grammar "so as to make oneself easily understood regarding those objects most necessary to life." Discusses the cruelty of the Dutch slave owners in Surinam, a country made to flourish by the "genius" of the Dutch nation for the exploitation of swampy lands. The author looks to the speedy abolition of slavery in the lands of the Batavian [Dutch] republic. A prosperity rivalling that of Surinam is predicted for the French colony, where the abolition of slavery took place without the violence and chaos that occurred in Saint-Domingue. Some details of the current state of agriculture, the administration, and daily life in the colony under the new republic are given. The folding map depicts the coast and interior of French Guiana (including the Isles du Diable, a site of the later penal colony) with a detailed map inset of the environs of Cayenne, principal city of the colony to which numerous enemies of the Revolution were deported in the mid-1790s; alluding perhaps to these deportations, the publisher's preface speaks of the interest in the colony, "sur-tout dan les circonstances actuelles." Hand-color map is 9.25 x 14 cm. Sabin 66412. A rare work in very presentable condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Bell&#39;s British Theatre, consisting of the most esteemed English plays

London: George Cawthorn, 1797. 34 volumes, 16mo., engravings; a fine and handsome set in contemporary sprinkled calf, full blue morocco spines richly gilt. The "most esteemed" English plays. A most handsome set of collected plays by the famous publisher Bell, &#39;the mischievous spirit, the very Puck of booksellers&#39; (DNB). This fine collection includes many of the most famous plays by authors such as Milton, Goldsmith, Jonson, Congreve, and Mrs. Griffiths. It was originally issued in 1776-77 as a serious attack on the monopoly exerted by a group of London booksellers calling themselves "the trade". Bell was a consummate bookseller, and his small, tasteful volumes were renowned both for ease of reading (his major innovation was the discarding of the long &#39;s&#39;) and lavish illustration. Each play was issued with a frontispiece of a famous actor in a rhetorical pose from the play, as well as another of a suitably dramatic scene. This attention to design confirmed and enhanced the popular success of the series. The fact that each play is also prefaced by a brief commentary and biography of the author, the latter designed, at least in part, as moral corrective to the reader, hence the DNB entry on Bell: &#39;pioneer in that kind of publication so much in vogue in later days, by which the multitude is taught to feel an interest in the best literature by means of prints and illustrations executed by good artists.&#39;.
