Despite all the bustle reported in these communications, the British fleet was ineffective and Colpoys was replaced. Fortunatelyfor the British, though maybe not so fortunate for Irish patriots, theweather accomplished what the Royal Navy could not, sending the Frenchfleet home in tatters.

Paris, au bureau de la Pasigraphie, 1797. 4to., (4) + 66 + 63 + (1)pp., blank strip cut away from lower margin of last leaf, title-page a bit dust-soiled and with the initials 'A.G.' ink-stamped in margin, occasional light foxing, corners of some leaves curled, old, probably original, marbled wrappers, entirely uncut. A good copy. First edition in French (published at the same time as a German language printing). A portrait was apparently supplied on request to subscribers (printed note on title verso) but is not present here. An interesting proposal for a new lingua franca or universal language. Joseph De Maimieux emigrated to Germany during the French Revolution, but returned to France in 1797 where he immediately published his Pasigraphie>. 'Although several other schemes of universal language were to appear in the course of the 1790s, none aroused more than a fraction of the interest that greeted the Pasigraphie> (1797) of Joseph de Maimieux ... The invention was praised, for example, by Goupil-Préfelne as being of as great importance to humanity as the invention of printing. It was presented to Napoleon who is said to have admired it considerably ... The work was submitted in 1798 to the second class of the Institut national for its approval, and it is for this reason above all that it merits attention. For it served not only to inspire memoirs on pasigraphy from Joseph Marie de Gérando, Destutt de Tracy, and Pierre-Louis Roederer, but also formed the basis for a theoretical, and at times profound, discussion of universal language that was to continue for several years to be 'une des constantes préoccupations de la section de philosophie'.' [Knowlson, Univeresal Language Schemes>, pp.153-155.] The Foreword is by the Abbé Sicard, the French expert on the education of deaf-mutes.

The Anti-Jacobin; or, Weekly Examiner. [To be continued every Monday during the Sitting of Parliament] (No.1. [Monday, November 20, 1797] - No.36. [Monday, July 9, 1798] complete with original Prospectus.

London: Published by J Wright: -98 1797 - folio, 36 original issues (all published), in newspaper form, each with three halfpenny stamp, complete with original prospectus at front, bound in contemporary marbled boards, rubbed on extremities, later reback with paper title label to spine. A generally VG clean and complete set with all but the last number uncut of this rare item. The Anti-Jacobin, or, Weekly Examiner was an English newspaper founded by George Canning in 1797 and devoted to opposing the radicalism of the French Revolution. The Revolution polarized British political opinion in the 1790s, with conservatives outraged at killing of the king, the expulsion of the nobles, and the Reign of Terror. Britain went to war against Revolutionary France. Conservatives castigated every radical opinion in Britain as "Jacobin" (in reference to the leaders of the Terror), warning that radicalism threatened an upheaval of British society. The Anti-Jacobin sentiment was expressed in print. William Gifford was its editor. Its first issue was published on 20 November 1797 and during the parliamentary session of 1797–98 it was issued every Monday. The Anti-Jacobin consisted of 36 issues printed from November 20, 1797 until July 9, 1798. These 36 issues amounted to only 288 pages; however, the Anti-Jacobin is considered one of the most influential and effective periodicals published for both literature and politics. There are two significant stylistic features of the Anti-Jacobin that contributes to these positive remarks: the mass amount of factual material and the straightforward, brief nature that the material was presented in. The Anti-Jacobin is believed to have originated from George Canning's involvement in peace negotiations with France in 1797 when he was the undersecretary of state for foreign affairs. The coup d'état caused these negotiations to end abruptly on September 4, 1797. This led Canning to revert his attention towards his home, England, where he decided to write a letter to George Ellis on October 19, 1797. This letter contained Canning’s proposal to write a periodical that was to include humour, good principles, and frank reasoning that would influence the public to side with the anti-Jacobins. With the help of fellow Tory Parliament members John Hookham Frere (Canning’s school friend) and George Ellis, Canning was able to commission the publication of the Anti-Jacobin to Wright. The anti-Jacobins established their headquarters in a vacated, secret house nearby Wright where they would congregate every Sunday before each new issue was released. William Gifford, the editor of the periodical, had established his style by writing poems like the Baviad (1794) and Maeviad (1795), which satirized Robert Merry, a Jacobin writer, and the Della Cruscans. Pitt, Jenkinson, Hammond, Baron Macdonald, and Marquis Wellesley were also contributors to the periodical. The Anti-Jacobin satirized many famous poets, scientists, philosophers, politicians, explorers, pedagogues, and demagogues.[14] "It was to its satire that it owed both its influence and its fame, and of this satire much was in verse, some of the most telling poems being from Canning’s pen," (Marshall 179). These groups and individuals included: The French and their British allies, radicals, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Erasmus Darwin, Thomas Paine, William Godwin, and Mary Wollstonecraft.[15] Styles of poetry that were commonly mocked in the Anti-Jacobin were Orientalism, Gothic, Darwinian didactic couplets, German Drama, and sentimentalism. Two editions were published at the same time, the latter, and a second in Hamburg in Mowing. See Tchemerzine V, 409. The result of this preliminary disboard, as the famous dictionary, never emerge. The second text was published for the first time in Berlin in 1784 following this closely "subject proposed by the Academy of Berlin." Tchemerzine V, 403: 'This edition, well printed, is also sought as the original. Half black chagrin mid nineteenth Jansenist. Back to 4 nerves. The keynote speech is an ambitious book, both a reflection on the phonetic, linguistic reflection, and a book of philosophy of language, which considers that one can not speak of man and the world of ideas, not to mention language and speech. The second book is raised to the glory of French monument, "What is not clear is not French." Rivaroli born son of an Italian innkeeper, Antoine Rivarol tutor in Lyon and then in Paris, introduced in the halls calling himself Count Rivarol, it will be famous in his time to fight the glories of the time, writers and philosophers , against Beaumarchais, Buffon or Mirabaud, with violence and a real talent for satire and controversy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.

Linnerhielm skriver bl.a.

Stockholm: J.S. Ekmanson, 1797. Octavo; a very good copy in a modern calf binding. First Swedish edition. Scarce: the first Swedish edition, translated by Samuel ?-dmann, of 'one of the early and fundamental books on the Northwest coast of America in general and on Alaska in particular' (Lada-Mocarski). Meares made two fur-trading voyages, the first reaching Alaska and Kodiak, but was frustrated by the presence of the Russians. On the Northwest coast he met Portlock and Dixon, later sailing to Hawaii and continuing to Canton. His second voyage to the American coast was to alter the course of history, with his actions leading to the "Nootka Controversy" and nearly precipitating a war between England and Spain. The appendices contain letters and instructions, Duffin's journal while exploring the Straits of Juan de Fuca, and Meares's Memorial of 13 May 1790, claiming exclusive rights to Nootka and the prior raising of the British flag.

A Narrative of the Sufferings of T. F. Palmer, and W. Skirving: during a Voyage to New South Wales, 1794, on board the Surprise Transport. By ... Thomas Fyshe Palmer

Cambridge: printed by Benjamin Flower: for W. H. Lunn, J. Deighton, and J. Nicholson; and sold by J. March, Norwich; J. Abel, Northampton; T. Langdon, Leeds; G.G. and J. Robinson, and T. Conder, London, 1797. First edition, without ad. xii, [13]-74 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Full period hand-dyed calf, spine gilt with lettering piece, marbled endsheets, ochre edges. Handsome copy of an uncommon work. First edition, without ad. xii, [13]-74 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. A SUPPOSED MUTINY? A scarce copy of the first edition. This is an often overlooked contribution to eighteenth century Australian convict literature. Palmer, a Unitarian minister, was a Scottish political reformer who was charged with sedition and sentenced to seven years transportation. Part of a group called the "Scottish Martyrs," he endured forced labour in England for three months before sailing for Botany Bay in New South Wales. The work here focuses primarily on "the story of the inhuman treatment of Palmer and Skirving by Captain Campbell, master of the Surprise, following the malicious discovery, by Maurice Margarot, a fellow convict and martyr, of a sham plot for capturing the ship. Depositions of the surgeon and members of the New South Wales Corps against Campbell are included" (Ferguson). As a result of the incident Palmer and Skirving were confined to their cabins and ordrinary convicts were flogged in connection. The despatches and letters are all dated 1794 and were written from Sydney Cove. Despite all this, the matter was dropped upon arrival and the reformers, who had letters of introduction to the governor, engaged in farming and commerce in Australia. Skirving died of dysentery in 1796, however the others were released in 1800. This narrative was taken to England by Surgeon and First Fleet author John White where it was put through the press by Palmer's friend Jeremiah Joyce. A second edition was published in the same year. The last copy of this first edition to appear at auction was the Brooke-Hitiching copy (also in a recent binding) the one prior to that appeared in 1977.         Sketches on various subjects; moral, literary, and political. ..... Second edition

London: printed for J. Bell. 1797. 8vo., x + 297 + (1)pp., including the half-title, occasional minor foxing, the paper generally lightly found throughout, contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked to match, flat spine gilt with morocco label lettered gilt. A very good copy indeed, from the 19th century library of Rev. William Long with his armorial bookplate> on pastedown. First published in 1796: both editions rather scarce. Henry James Pye (1745-1813), an undistinguished poet (poetaster), actually became poet-laureate in 1790, but wrote 'irreproachably patriotic and ludicrously tame official poetry' (DNB). He was the constant butt of contemporary ridicule, not least by John Wolcot (Peter Pindar) and Lord Byron. His Sketches on various subjects> is a compilation of miscellaneous thoughts on novels, the army, gardening, Shakespeare, marriage, field sports, the weather, cards, resistance to government, gaming, aborigines, and much else. His chapter on marriage (pp. 6-17), however, shows Pye to have the pretty liberal view that divorce should be available to all, not only the rich. 'To compel a man and woman who have a rooted dislike to each other, to continue together for life, because they have inconsiderately engaged to do it under certain specific forms, is a most unjust and cruel law .....'.

Dissertatio inauguralis medica de methodo cognoscendi curandique animi morbos stabilienda.,

I) fast vollständig neu ab. Sprache: de Gewicht in Gramm: 46 Kl.-8°, mod.
