BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van 1770-1827
Vienne: Artaria e Comp. [PN 627], [after 1796]. Folio. Sewn. [1] (title), 2-11, [i] (blank); 8, [ii] (blank); 7, [i] (blank); 7, [i] (blank), 7, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Watermark incorporating a star within a shield. Moderately worn and soiled; some light foxing, heavier to title of first violin part. First violin part with old paper reinforcement to spine. Portion of imprint removed from title. First Edition, later issue. Kinsky-Halm p. 12 (first issue). Weinhold/Dorfmüller p. 256. Hirsch IV, 241. For other issues see Hoboken 2, 27-30. In the first issue the opus number is printed as "IV" and the price "f2." In the present issue "4" appears in manuscript and there is no printed price. In addition, the number "11-1/2B" is printed at the foot of the first page of music in the "Violino Primo" part, most probably a printer's notation referring to the number of sheets required to print the part. Opus 4 is an original work, drawing on material from Beethoven's then-unpublished Octet for Winds (op. 103), "... with revisions sufficient to warrant calling it a new composition." Solomon: Beethoven, p. 102. "At some time before February 1791, probably when he was composing the C major Piano Sonata, Op. 2, no. 3, with its closely related opening theme, Beethoven re-cast the Octet (op. 103) as a String Quintet, Op. 4, and comparison of the two versions shows considerable light on his development as an instrumental composer during those four important formative years... The Quintet is by no means an arrangement of the Octet; unlike Mozart's parallel recasting of his Octet for the same … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Philadelphia]
Philadelphia: Printed by Zachariah Poulson, Junior, 1796. 24pp. Stitched and untrimmed. Outer untrimmed margins with some light wear, minor foxing. Contemporary plain rear wrapper present. Very Good. The Report is a rare analysis of the municipal infrastructure of Philadelphia and the financing necessary for performing City services. It is an informative, detailed picture of the necessities of eighteenth century America's leading City. The Committee members were John Connelly, Samuel Mickle Fox, and John Bleakley. They sign in type on page 17.Municipal receipts-- from taxes, fines, rentals of city property-- are used for "Lighting and watching the city": 718 lamps are lighted under specific schedules, at enumerated costs; 23 watchmen, whose "routes, and the times of crying the hour are prescribed to them by the Commissioners." Funds are used for "Paving and repairing old pavements." The work involved, with its costs, is enumerated. "Cleaning the streets" is also a municipal function, "so essential to the health of the citizens." The city must clean the "filth" and "manure," costing "the city annually a considerable sum." The 300 "public pumps and wells," and the need for more of them, require maintenance and planning.Various properties owned by the City are let to private parties in exchange for rent. These include market stalls, wharves, the Schuylkill ferry and bridge, the Potter's-field. Procedures for determining and recording city receipts and expenses are delineated. Two tables, at pages 18 and 19, print the City's receipts and expenses for June 1789 through each subs … [Click Below for Full Description]

[American Atlas] Reid John
John Read Bookseller, 1796. FIRST EDITION OF THE SECOND ATLAS TO BE PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES AND WITH THE VERY RARE PLAN OF WASHINGTON DC INCLUDED, which is almost always lacking. With 21 very fine and attractive maps of America, including the large plan of the City of Washington (District of Columbia). The large folio maps are all double-page spreads, but for Maine, which is a extra full-page folding plate, and Georgia and Tennessee which are full page. The rare plan of Washington D.C. is a full double-page spread plus foldout and is over 21" x over 16'. folio, handsomely bound in contemporary style marbled boards backed in brown calf, with an antiqued paper label printed in black on the upper cover. 21 plates, most being on sheets 18.5 by 16.25 inches. An extraordinary example, the rare maps beautifully preserved, complete and neatly tipped to stubs for binding, the maps with no tears or loss and very little age evidence, a number of the maps with neat and interesting manuscript notations to the versos in an antique hand executed in sepia coloured ink. Many of these manuscript notations log distances between locations or similar geographic comment. We would suggest that these add significantly to the honesty and interest of the copy and in no case do they detract from or affect the images. Some of the maps are neatly numbered in a corner in the same early hand, an additional leaf of notes is bound in at the rear, a little occasional age spotting, all very minor. An exceptional example very well preserved indeed. FIRST EDITION, HIGHLY IMPORTANT, OF ONE OF THE MOST RARE … [Click Below for Full Description]

Washington also advocates the creation of federal civilian and military universities, several years before the United States Military Academy, the first national military school in America, was established in 1802. Washington's last annual Address was first published in the Gazette of the United States on December 7, 1796. Robert Fulton
I and J Taylor, 1796. Ex-Brooklyn Public Library with pin-prick stamp, ink stamp and ink code to title. Ink stamp to first contents page and ink stamps to all plates bar two. Later half binding with marbled boards. Crude leather staining has marked the marbled boards, worse to front. New endpapers. Archival repair to title page margins. Tanning and light spotting of the main text, consistent with age. All plates heavily spotted and aforementioned stamps affecting the images (see photos). All plates dated March 1796. Published by I and J Taylor at the Architectural Library High Holborn. The treatise deals with Fulton's ideas on a range of matters relating to canals. In most instances the ideas are illustrated with reference to the plates bound to the rear. These include suggestions for iron bridge construction; an iron aqueduct; boat lifts; inclined planes and boat design. 144pp with 17 plates. Robert Fulton was a remarkable American engineer and a few of his ideas for bridges were put to use on British canals but within a year of this publication he had moved to France and designed the first recognised submarine for Napoleon. Later in his career he was credited with designing and building the first river steamboat. More details available on request. (18a11By[ud1]) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

George Washington
Samuel Campbell, New York, 1796. FIRST EDITION. 2-Volume Set. 296, 311 pp. Hardcover bound in leather. Volume 1 has been rebacked with a new spine and label, though original boards. This is the scarce two-volume set of Washington's letters to the American Congress as Commander in Chief of the Continental Forces during the Revolutionary War, published during Washington's second term as President. The editor's Volume I "Advertisement" states that permission was granted in 1792 to access Washington's original papers, preserved in the Office of the Secretary of State, and to transcribe the letters to the Continental Congress from then-Commander in Chief of the Continental Forces, George Washington. The letters published in these two volumes span June 24, 1775 (the month of Washington's appointment as Commander in Chief) to December 31, 1778. The editor appears to have been attentive to concerns about commercial viability and marketing that might sound familiar to a modern publisher: "The editor contents himself with laying before the public but a part of the collection, - intending , if these volumes meet with a favourable reception, to continue the publication . Some parts of these letters may perhaps appear too full of minutiae to interest that class of readers, who, unaccustomed to enter into the investigation of causes or consequences, delight only in recitals of battles, sieges, and other striking occurrences which constitute the more prominent features of history. But, to the reasoning philosophic reader, who wishes to explore the secret springs of action.those minute det … [Click Below for Full Description]

The revised second edition of a rare treatise on female propriety by Henry Revell Reynolds (1745-1811), written the year prior to his being appointed physician-extraordinary to George III. Reynolds is throughout his impassioned treatise predominantly concerned with the physical appearance of 'ladies' and what he considers their improper modes of dress. He opens stating; 'That a very young man should think of censuring the present mode of dress, which is so admirably adapted, and (with submission I say it) intended, for the gratification of his male contemporaries, will subject him instantly to the ridicule of almost every one', this notion does not however dissuade him from continuing his attack; 'He tells you, Ladies, honestly, that the fashion for exposing your bosoms, is the one against which his remarks are chiefly to be directed...the compliance with it, is, without any exception, indecorous; that it is often dangerous, and frequently ridiculous...'
