MARTINEZ DE BUSTOS (Patricio).
S.l.n.d. (c.1796). AFFICHE in-Plano. [Click Below for Full Description]

WILLIAMS, William.
London: Printed for J. S. Jordan, 1796. London: Printed for J. S. Jordan,, 1796. Containing an investigation of the rise and progress of despotism; the ancient and present state of France; state of Europe, and of England in particular; calculation of the durability of the funding system; and the absolute necessity of an immediate peace upon any terms. With few anticipating strictures upon Mr. Burke's long promised letters against a regicide peace. Octavo (211 x 131 mm). Early 19th-century quarter calf, spine lettered in gilt, marbled sides. Half-title present. Calf worn with chip at head of spine, some faint foxing. A very good copy. First edition of this counterblast to Edmund Burke's Letters on a Regicide Peace, which Burke wrote in opposition to William Pitt's attempts to negotiate peace with the French Directorate. The author here defends a peaceful settlement, and indeed, as the long title declares, upholds "the absolute necessity of an immediate peace upon any terms". The author sympathizes with the French Revolution, and in his tract traces the origin of despotism, rejects the French absolute monarchy, and defends the present state of France. The work is uncommon, with ESTC locating eight copies in British and American libraries.

Duane, William]: [Washington, George]
Philadelphia, 1796. 48pp. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards. Minor toning and soiling, bottom corner of titlepage chipped. Very good. A vicious attack on George Washington by the ill-tempered Philadelphia printer and publisher, hiding under a pseudonym. A harsh critique of Washington's services during the Revolution, printed soon after his famous Farewell Address of September 1796. "One of the most violent invectives against Washington..." - Sabin. "Transcends in bitterness even Paine's invective" - Howes. Evans lists this work under Friedrich Treziulney, Duane's bookkeeper, describing "the intense hatred edited in, to the opening and closing pages, could only be that of a man who was without citizenship in any country, or political principle which was not opposed to the public opinion of every country wherever he had lived." A rare work, and a classic case of the Federalist-Republican split in the mid-1790s. HOWES D515. EVANS 31315. SABIN 20989.

Vienne: Artaria e Comp. [PN 627], [after 1796]. Folio. Sewn. [1] (title), 2-11, [i] (blank); 8, [ii] (blank); 7, [i] (blank); 7, [i] (blank), 7, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Watermark incorporating a star within a shield. Moderately worn and soiled; some light foxing, heavier to title of first violin part. First violin part with old paper reinforcement to spine. Portion of imprint removed from title. First Edition, later issue. Kinsky-Halm p. 12 (first issue). Weinhold/Dorfmüller p. 256. Hirsch IV, 241. For other issues see Hoboken 2, 27-30. In the first issue the opus number is printed as "IV" and the price "f2." In the present issue "4" appears in manuscript and there is no printed price. In addition, the number "11-1/2B" is printed at the foot of the first page of music in the "Violino Primo" part, most probably a printer's notation referring to the number of sheets required to print the part. Opus 4 is an original work, drawing on material from Beethoven's then-unpublished Octet for Winds (op. 103), "... with revisions sufficient to warrant calling it a new composition." Solomon: Beethoven, p. 102. "At some time before February 1791, probably when he was composing the C major Piano Sonata, Op. 2, no. 3, with its closely related opening theme, Beethoven re-cast the Octet (op. 103) as a String Quintet, Op. 4, and comparison of the two versions shows considerable light on his development as an instrumental composer during those four important formative years... The Quintet is by no means an arrangement of the Octet; unlike Mozart's parallel recasting of his Octet for the same … [Click Below for Full Description]

Herschel, Caroline
London: Peter Elmsly, Printer to the Royal Society, 1796. First edition. From the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London (Part I, Volume 86, 1796), pages 131-34. Disbound, with title page, publisher's advertisements, and table of contents included as frontmatter. Pages overall clean and neat, making this a pleasing copy of Herschel's scarce paper on astronomical discovery. While ESTC counts two copies of a later reprint at Harvard, the database does not record any institutional holdings of the paper's original appearance in the Royal Society's publication. Educated from early childhood in fields including music, philosophy, and mathematics, Caroline Herschel's scientific career was born out of her collaborations with her brother William, who invited her to join in household in 1782. "I was to be trained for an assistant Astronomer," she reports, "I was to sweep for comets" (Lubbock). Within a decade, she had developed into a leader in the field, becoming one of the first women ever to read a scientific paper at the Royal Society of London. The present is another of the works she presented in that setting, documenting the discovery of a new comet -- one of the eight that she would locate between the decade of 1786-1797. Her collaborations with her brother William Herschel in addition to her independent work contributed to the fame she enjoyed in her own lifetime, including a salary awarded to her by the King. "Among her contemporaries Caroline Herschel had become a legend...in 1835, she and Mary Somerville became the first women to be awarded honorary memb … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eredi di Aldo Manuzio. Folio (303x202 mm). [234] leaves. Collation: π4 a-y8 z10 A-E8 F4. Aldine device on title page and last leaf verso. 172 woodcuts, of which 11 are full-page. Blank spaces for capital letters, with printed guide letters. Eighteenth-century calf, covers framed with gilt fillets and floral tools at corners, spine with six raised bands, compartments gilt-tooled with floral motifs, title in gilt on red morocco lettering-piece, marbled endpapers, mottled edges in green and red (back cover somewhat bowed). A fine, wide-margined copy. A few minor stains on the title page. On front flyleaf verso there is an ownership inscription, barely legible, but dated 1796. SECOND EDITION of the celebrated Poliphilus, following the first edition published by Aldus in 1499. The book is rightly famous for its marvelous mis-en-page, the elegance of printing and inking, the exquisite design now generally ascribed to the Venetian artist Benedetto Bordon, the careful woodcutting, and the perfect fusion between text and image. Nothing of this perfection is lost in this second edition. The second edition was printed by Aldus' heirs, employing the same woodblocks as the 1499 edition, with the exception of seven that were either broken or missing. The re-designed and newly cut woodcuts are found on fols. b4v, b5r, e2v, e5r, o3v, q5v, and x2r. The new printing suggests a renewed interest in the work, in Italy as well as beyond, for within a year a French translation appeared, followed by an English translation in 1592. The work is conventionally attributed to the Dominican friar Fra … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wilson]
Printed for J.S. Jordan, 1796. FIRST EDITION, slightly browned, pp. [iv], 45, [1], 8vo, disbound, becoming loose. The attribution to one Wilson is via a pencil inscription on the title-page. This in turn may stem from the reference at the end of the letter to Jasper Wilson's (this being one of the noms de plume of James Currie) 'Letter Commercial and Political . addressed to Pitt', 1793, but it would not appear that this author of the present Letter is really to be identified with Currie. Whoever it was, he (assuming he) was a Radical, as the choice of printer indicates - Jordan took over Paine's Rights of Man from Joseph Johnson. WILLIAMS, William.
London: Printed for J. S. Jordan, 1796. ESTC T13488. [Attributes: First Edition]

PLAYFAIR, William.
London: Printed by C. Whittingham; and sold by John Stockdale, 1796. Octavo (212 x 127 mm). Recent quarter calf to style, red morocco label, marbled sides, vellum tips. Contemporary ownership signature obscured by early hand at head of title page. Light soiling to initial and final leaves and minor fraying around page extremities. A very good copy. With 2 folding hand-coloured plates. First edition. The title is ironic - the author holds that the alarmist tracts of his contemporaries, which bemoaned the danger of Britain's ballooning national debt, were bolstering the nation's adversaries by portraying Britain in a weaker economic state than she in fact was. Playfair instead presents the "Enemies of England" with a vision of Britain's strong economic position, perfectly capable of many more years of war, and argues that the sinking fund established by Richard Price had rendered the national debt benign. The inventor of statistical graphs, William Playfair (1759-1823) invented the series line graph, the bar chart, and the pie chart "without significant precursors" (ODNB). He published many books and pamphlets incorporating such charts and graphs, holding that they were the best means of displaying empirical data, yet met with indifference in his own time. Two line graphs are present in this work: the first illustrating the progress of the respective revenues of England and France from the middle of the 15th century to the end of the 18th century, and the second showing the rise of Britain's exports over the 18th century. The pamphlet is uncommon, with ESTC listing nine copie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Geneva: Chez J. J. Paschoud, Libraire, de l'Imprimerie de Luc Sesti, 1796. Geneva: Chez J. J. Paschoud, Libraire, de l'Imprimerie de Luc Sestié,, 1796. Octavo (199 x 124 mm). Near-contemporary pink speckled paper boards, manuscript paper label to spine, speckled edges. Ownership signature dated 1821 to front free endpaper. Bound with half-title but without errata. A lovely copy, contents clean and crisp, with little wear to binding. First edition of Clavel d'Ussieres's political fable. Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Persian Empire, was metamorphosed into a philosopher king by Xenophon in his Cyropaedia of the 4th century BCE. Xenophon's Cyrus was a favourite of the Mirror for Princes genre, from the medieval period through to the Renaissance and Enlightenment. Clavel d'Ussieres's fable is a nod to the Cyropaedia, but instead takes Cyrus the Younger as his model, the subject of Xenophon's other great work, the Anabasis. In the fable, Cyrus is collecting his forces at Sardis to march on Babylon. Plato and the other Greek philosophers of the age discuss the grievances of Persia and project its future constitution, an elective aristocracy, with Cyrus (Milto being his mistress) offered as a model of an ideal sovereign. The book is scarce, with OCLC listing 13 copies worldwide, of which just one is in British institutional holdings, in the British Library.

KIRKPATRICK, Hezekiah
1796. 2 p.l., 46 pp. 8vo, attractive antique calf-backed marbled boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Warrington: Printed by W. Eyres, 1796. First edition of this scarce provincial imprint. During the final four decades of the 18th century Britain experienced a number of corn harvest failures with a resulting rise in the price of wheat. The Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, the Board of Agriculture, and various private individuals advocated the adoption of the potato as a substitute for wheat, and great efforts were made to popularize the cultivation of this crop. The writer of the present tract was no doubt inspired by a Board of Agriculture report on the culture and use of potatoes, which was published in 1795. Kirkpatrick, who lived near Wigan in Lancashire, a well-established center for potato cultivation, was not a professional nurseryman, but he grew certain plants in his garden that he offered for sale. "After giving details concerning the cultivation, raising, and storing of potatoes, Kirkpatrick describes their various uses. He points out their value in lessening the consumption of grain, flour, or bread, gives directions of ways of cooking them for humans and also livestock, and includes a receipt for making starch from potatoes. Moreover, he lists the names of [more than 35] different varieties of early and late potatoes grown in the vicinity of Wigan."-Henrey, II, pp. 390, 614-15 & no. 899. Nice copy with a small paste-on errata slip at the end. ❧ Fussell, III, pp. 16-17.

Without the blank A1. Joints cracked at head but holding, a few scattered spots, a very good copy. First edition. The author James White (1775-1820) was a friend of Charles Lamb from their schooldays at Christ's Hospital. He so enjoyed Shakespeare's Henry IV, to which he was introduced by Lamb, that he developed an impersonation of Falstaff good enough to rouse the jealousy of professional actors and for which, according to another schoolfellow John Mathew Gutch, he was usually addressed by his friends as "Sir John". Original Letters was published the same year as the production at Drury Lane of William Ireland's Shakespeare forgery, Vortigern, and the preface to White's book has a dedication in black letter to "Master Samuel Irelaunde", the forger's father, which was probably written by Lamb. Lamb puffed the book whenever he could, inducing Coleridge to notice it in the Critical Review for June 1797, and writing his own appreciation to the Examiner for 5 Sept. 1819 … [Click Below for Full Description]
