Rebmann, Andreas Georg Fr.).
Strasburg. ---------- Johann Andreas Georg Friedrich Rebmann (* 24. November 1768 in Sugenheim/Franken; † 16. [Click Below for Full Description]

GutsMuths, Johann Christoph Friedrich:
Schnepfenthal, Buchhandlung der Erziehungsanstalt, 1796. Mit gest. Frontispiz und 4 Kupfertafeln mit jeweils 4 Illustrationen. XVI, 492 S., 2 Bll. Hübscher HLdr. d. Zt. First edition, first printed rules of baseball! - Gutsmuths was a pioneer of physical education and gymnastics. In this compendium of games and sports he describes 15 different types of ballgame, including Thorball, Schnurball, Fangball, and Prellball. Most importantly he devotes nearly seven pages to "englische Base-ball", the forerunner to American baseball played from at least 1750 by the schoolchildren of Britain. Gutsmuths also describes in detail "das deutsche-englische Ballspiel" (also known as ballstock) a cousin of English baseball played in Europe until the early 20th century. "Gutsmuths`s documentation of the game is an important contribution to baseball history, because it is the strongest surviving evidence of an ancient family of European ball games that may have influcenced the inception of baseball in England" (David Block, Baseball Before We Knew It, 2005, p 182). The first description of rounders or any other baseball-like game did not appear in English until 1828. See also The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, 2011. - Slightly rubbed. - NDB VII, 351. HKJL III, Sp. 455-463. LKJL I, 514: "Das erste pädagogisch fundierte Spielbuch. [Click Below for Full Description]

P. Guichonnet, in D.B.I., pp. 205-8. Manno-Promis, I/n. 46.

GEORGE WASHINGTON
Philadelphia, PA, 1796. No binding. Fine. Manuscript Document Signed as President. Appointing Simeon De Witt Surveyor General of the United States. Philadelphia, Pa., May 30, 1796. 1 p., 14 x 10 1/2 in. With wax seal of the United States. Simeon De Witt, scion of the famous Dutch New York political family, served as a surveyor in the Continental Army and Surveyor General of the State of New York from 1784 until his death in 1834. In 1796, Washington, himself an experienced surveyor, tapped De Witt to be the first U.S. Surveyor general under the Public Lands Act of 1796. Congress created the position to organize the Northwest Territory of the Ohio Valley and sell the land. Remarkably, though, De Witt declined Washington's offer, and instead Brigadier General Rufus Putnam took the job. Complete TranscriptGeorge Washington President of the United States of America To all who shall see these Presents GreetingKnow Ye that reposing special trust and Confidence in the Integrity and Abilities of Simeon De Witt of New York, I have nominated and by and with the advice and Consent of the Senate do appoint him Surveyor General of the United States, and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfil [sic] the duties of that office according to law and to have and to hold the said office with all the Powers, Privileges, and Emoluments to the same of Right appertaining during the pleasure of the President of the United States for the time being. In Testimony whereof, I have caused these letters to be made patent and the Seal of the United States to be hereunto affixed. Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1796. Engraving. The Original Township Ranges: Remaking the American Landscape A fundamentally important map in the westward development of the United States and the mapping of Ohio and the Old Northwest. This map was created as a result of the Land Ordinance of 1785, which set out an orderly method for surveying and selling western lands. The Confederation Congress hoped that proceeds from these sales would help settle the debts growing out of the American Revolution. The map was created from the surveys of Thomas Hutchins, who had been Geographer to the United States until his death in 1789. Hutchins had already surveyed the area several times, and he and his assistants mapped out four of the original seven township ranges before he died. The final three ranges were subsequently mapped, and the "Seven Ranges" became the first portion of Ohio surveyed under the Land Ordinance of 1785. The area surveyed under the Ordinance and depicted on this map is in the form of a triangle, with a ninety-one mile western boundary, a forty-two mile northern boundary, and with the Ohio River forming the eastern boundary. Each township range would consist of thirty-six square miles of territory divided into thirty-six separately numbered square mile sections, each made up of 640 acres. Certain sections were reserved for the federal government, and others were earmarked for sale. Section sixteen in each township was set aside for a public school. The map is drawn on a scale of four miles to the inch. The true importance of this map is not its i … [Click Below for Full Description]

An original collection of Swiss songs mostly for three voices and continuo, bearing an inscription on the title page supposedly from Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy to Jenny Lind. The inscription and signature are almost certainly spurious, but appear to date from the 19th century and share some similarities with Mendelssohn's hand, though here rather more shaky and uncertain than is seen in authentic examples. The volume contains settings of texts by Johann Kaspar Lavater, originally for voice and continuo, arranged by Johann Heinrich Egli for 1-4 voices and continuo, including 6 new settings by Egli, 2 to texts of Lavater and 4 to texts of F. von Stolberg. GODWIN, WILLIAM
London: Printed for G. G. and J. Robinson, 1796. Second Edition, Corrected. This is a handsome copy of a work PMM calls "one of the earliest, the clearest, and most absolute theoretical expositions of socialist and anarchist doctrine." Written by the philosophical radical William Godwin (1756-1836) and first published mere weeks after the execution of Louis XVI, "Political Justice" passionately argues for the necessity of individual judgment and reason in the pursuit of harmony and human perfection. According to Godwin, it is the development of our own rational faculties that will suffuse society with benevolence, not our laws and institutions. In his view, "government by its very nature counteracts the improvement of original mind," property is a form of tyrrany, and institutions like marriage that hinder our liberty are to be avoided. As shocking as many of these ideas must have seemed at the time, at the heart of Godwin's philosophy is a belief in the innate goodness of man, and a staunch defense of individualism. His views influenced generations of thinkers both in the philosophical and literary realms, including Robert Owen, J. S. Mill, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and perhaps most notably Percy Bysshe Shelley (who later married his daughter Mary).. 220 x 130 mm. (8 5/8 x 5 1/8"). With half titles. Two volumes. Second Edition, Corrected. Very attractive modern retrospective speckled calf, gilt, covers with Greek key border, smooth spines in compartments with central patera, leafy cornerpieces, green and red morocco labels, turn-ins with gilt floral … [Click Below for Full Description]

Great Britain. British Admiralty.
N.p., British Admiralty. 1796 -1797.. Soft cover. 4to, 29cm, un-paginated, c.55pp., including several folding tables, in the original plain blue wraps, frayed along the spine, wraps a bit wrinkled, very good condition, very rare. French intended to land a large expeditionary force in Ireland during the winter of 1796 1797 which would join with the United Irishmen and drive the British out of Ireland. These documents concern the state and condition of His Majesty's ships, and orders and letters concerning their sailing and deployment. This is all in reaction to the French expedition to Ireland, which was monitored by the British Fleet under Colpoys. Despite all the bustle reported in these communications, the British fleet was ineffective and Colpoys was replaced. Fortunately for the British, though not so fortunate for Irish patriots, the weather accomplished what the Royal Navy could not, sending the French fleet home in tatters. This is a fascinating document from the Napoleonic Wars, pertaining to one of the more colorful incidents of that troubled period. - With the bookplate of well known collector and bibliographer, Mario Witt. .
