Milton, John. With Notes by Thomas Newton and a Critical Dissertation by Samuel Johnson
Printed for J. Parsons, London, 1796. Finely bound subscriber's edition of Milton's Paradise Lost with notes by Bishop Thomas Newton. Octavo, bound in full red morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised gilt bands, gilt rules with floral gilt borders to the front and rear panels, inner dentelles, all edged gilt, marbled endpapers, ribbon bound in, illustrated with engravings, advertisements, list of subscribers, and index. Also containing the Life of Milton and A Critical Dissertation on the Poetical Works of Milton by Samuel Johnson. In near fine condition. An exceptional example. First published in 1667, "Paradise Lost is generally conceded to be one of the greatest poems in the English language; and there is no religious epic in English which measures up to Milton's masterpiece. Milton performed an artist's service to his God" (Magill, 511, 515). The writer and critic Samuel Johnson wrote that Paradise Lost shows off "[Milton's] peculiar power to astonish" and that "[Milton] seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was that Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful." By 1688, when England was on the verge of the Whig revolution, Milton's reputation had revived considerably. He was commended for his republicanism as well as his record as a defender of liberty. His supporters believed that his greatest poetic achievement merited this handsome, monumental edition. One of the e … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Nicklin, Susan]
London: Hookham and Carpenter, 1796. First edition. Two volumes in contemporary calf with morocco label remaining on volume II. Corners rubbed and bumped, and some loss to feet of spines; front hinge on volume II cracked but holding well. Else externally a copy that presents nicely. Collating [2], 202; [2], 216 pages: complete. Ownership signature of M. T. L. Mansel to front pastedown of each volume. Volume I contains some offsetting to preliminaries and rear; front endpaper loose but holding. Internally, about Fine, with both volumes clean, tight, and complete. With only one copy appearing in the modern auction record (over a decade ago), and ESTC locating only 8 copies in the U.S., this early women's education text has become quite scarce. Composed by a governess, Susan Nicklin, nearing her retirement, Address aims to prepare young women for the world as they come to the tail end of their formal educations. "Every season of life after the years of infancy have elapsed has duties peculiarly its own, all progressive in their dignity and consequently in their difficulty too. Those relative to each period seem as successive exercises; by which powers are gradually acquired, competent to the due discharge of the more arduous obligations imposed by the circumstances of maturing age," she advises her female readership. She explains that while infancy teaches joy, sensory experience, and affection almost effortlessly, later youth leads us to more seriously "observe, compare, and inquire." The young woman leaving home and schoolroom is on the cusp of a new period of life. "Very so … [Click Below for Full Description]

Labruzzi, Carlo
(Rome): (Carlo Labruzzi), 1796. Folio. 415 x 302 mm. (16 ¼ x 11 ½ inches). 13 full-page etchings printed in sanguine on laid paper, each plate with a loosely inserted guard sheet (also of laid paper) with 5 dark pencil points marked as guides to the artists. Early 19th-century red leather spine and tips over marbled paper boards. Leather ownership label with the name "Lebzeltern" (Ludwig von Lebzeltern) on the front board. Binding lightly rubbed, very good copy. Rare series of etchings, by the well-known Italian artist Carlo Labruzzi (1748-1817) created for the Countess Bessbourough, Henrietta Frances Duncannon, the daughter of the noted English book collector the Earl of Spencer. During the years 1792-95 she traveled throughout Italy and must have struck up a friendship with Labruzzi while in Rome in order for this curious series of etchings to be created. The title of the work in English reads, "Figures drawn from five predestined points". The points indicate where the hands, feet, and head of the image must be, and the artist's charge was to create images of classical figures from these guide points. What Labruzzi created was a very rare series of whimsical etchings where the figures were dressed in classical garb and posed in classical positions. It appears to be a test of sorts, where a challenge was brought by a beautiful English Countess and the artist executed fanciful designs meant to capture the playfulness of the moment. The first plate includes the dedication to Countess Bessbourough and illustrates a shield bearing the arms of the family crest. This copy … [Click Below for Full Description]

First collected edition. BAL 894; Evans 30025. Binding well rubbed, but the contents fine and complete. Scarce.. 12mo, contemporary tree-sheep, black leather label, gilt rules and lettering. Frontis portrait by Elkanah Tisdale. The four treatises on the French Revolution by poet, businessman, and diplomat Joel Barlow (1754-1812), published together for the first time. Barlow lived in France during the Revolution and was part of the circle that included Thomas Paine, Mary Wollstonecraft and others of similar leanings. Barlow was given the rare honor of being made a French citizen during the early days of the French National Assembly, but once he witnessed the emerging negative side of the Revolution, he left France and proclaimed "I meddle with no more politics." The frontis portrait engraved by Elkanah Tisdale is an unusual early image of Barlow.

Kodera Osai
Japan: ca. 1796. Large 8vo, pp. [108]; old Japanese "grass" script with Chinese elements, 18 extraordinary double-page watercolor illustrations; sewn and bound in the oriental style (fukurotoji) in original speckled beige wrappers; very slightly worn, preserving the original manuscript label label; a very good, attractive example, beautifully illustrated. An account of a voyage through the Izu Islands, a chain of islands south of Tokyo Bay, including Hachijojima, Hidojima, Arajima, Ooshima, and Miyakejima. Apparently one of three volumes, but this trip is complete unto itself. Apparently this voyage came as the result of an order from the Kansei Shogunate. During this period there were a number of people who traveled at the government's request to record geographical and cultural observations all over Japan, including Ino Tadataka who is known for completing the first map of Japan. Among these travelers was a local magistrate by the name of "Ochu" ("Taichu") who lead an expedition in 1796 to the Izu Islands. With him was the artist Kodera Osai, and it is his art work that graces this spectacular manuscript. The textual account of the voyage, dated April to December, 1796, is also likely his. In it he records excursions to temples (on the island of Hachijo he used the Soufukuji Temple as lodging), recounts his experiences with the local cuisines (he's a fan of sake), takes note of the silk and weaving industry, and records incidents of family life (in one particular household he notes that there were 14 to 15 children, all of whom were hungry). He describes the flora and fau … [Click Below for Full Description]

MILLER, John Frederick
London: Benjamin and John White, Horace's Head, Fleet Street and John Sewell, Cornhill, 1796. London: Benjamin and John White, Horace's Head, Fleet Street and John Sewell, Cornhill, 1796. Folio, two works bound together, with a total of 67 hand-coloured engraved plates (see note), several with manuscript captions and small annotations, bookplates; a magnificent tall copy in contemporary full calf, original gilt-decorated spine laid down, red morocco label. A rare and extremely attractive work of natural history with magnificent ornithological, zoological and botanical plates, several depicting specimens collected on Cook's voyages for the first time. Unlike many contemporary works which included illustrations of the natural history of the Pacific, Miller's book is both folio-format and hand-coloured, to dazzling effect. This fine copy offered here is the early issue without later watermarks unlike others recorded. All of the plates are by the artist John Frederick Miller (1759-1796), who cut his teeth engraving the plates for the official account of the Endeavour voyage (1773). Miller had planned to sail on Cook's second voyage with his patron, Sir Joseph Banks, but when Banks withdrew so did he, travelling instead as part of the Banks entourage to Iceland in 1772. Starting in 1776, Miller began to publish these beautiful plates depicting the very latest and most striking discoveries: gulls and cassowaries, jerboas and falcons, as well as Cook specimens such as the two beautiful Tahitian Rails and the penguins from different regions of the southern oceans. WHITE, James, & Charles Lamb.]
London: printed for the author; and published by Messrs. G. G. and J. Robinsons; J. Debrett; and Murray and Highley, 1796. Duodecimo pp. [2], v-xxiv, 123, [1]. Early 19th-century half calf, spine gilt in compartments, black morocco labels, marbled sides, drab endpapers, top edge gilt. Joints cracked at head but holding, a few scattered spots, a very good copy. Engraved frontispiece by W. Leney. Without the blank A1. First edition. The author James White (1775-1820) was a friend of Charles Lamb from their schooldays at Christ's Hospital. He so enjoyed Shakespeare's Henry IV, to which he was introduced by Lamb, that he developed an impersonation of Falstaff good enough to rouse the jealousy of professional actors and for which, according to another schoolfellow John Mathew Gutch, he was usually addressed by his friends as "Sir John". Original Letters was published the same year as the production at Drury Lane of William Ireland's Shakespeare forgery, Vortigern, and the preface to White's book has a dedication in black letter to "Master Samuel Irelaunde", the forger's father, which was probably written by Lamb. Lamb puffed the book whenever he could, inducing Coleridge to notice it in the Critical Review for June 1797, and writing his own appreciation to the Examiner for 5 Sept. 1819. He is also said to have purchased every available second-hand copy to present to his friends. The book was reissued the following year with a cancel title. ESTC T71574. [Attributes: First Edition]

One of the owners has added text to the initials in order to complete the surnames in this copy. The woodcuts are by John and Thomas Bewick. The work was originally issued in two volumes, with Bulmer printing 750 copies of the first volume and 1000 of the second volume; the first volume was re-issued, as above, in a printing of 250 copies to correct the discrepancy. The notice in the British Critic described it as "beautiful in its form, as well as pleasing in its contents.the typography belongs to the first class of Bulmerian work and the vignette ornaments are.executed on wood by the Bewicks." Huddersfield: Printed for the Author, By Sikes and Smart; and sold by Vernor and Hood London..., [no ]date] [1796]. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo (in 4s), pp. 96, engraved plate of axes as frontispiece, uncut, original wrappers, with title in ink on front cover; some minor wear to extremities, but a very good copy. The Critical Review noticed the work in 1800: "The author's great objects are to show, that the English firs, in suitable soils, with proper management, are as useful as those of Norway, and will produced timber of very considerable scantlings; and also that larch is highly valuable as a timber tree, adapted not only to useful but ornamental purposes. The specimen of larch timber, transmitted with the work, is indeed beautiful and seems to possess the smoothness and toughness of beech, with a better hue and more varied veins...." ESTC locates 8 copies in UK libraries (4 in Oxford libraries) and six in United State libraries. None of these seem to have the "specimen of larch timber" alluded to in the review. ESTC dates the work as 1800 (based on the engraved plate), but the paper is watermarked 1796 and 1797.

Benoit Dandre, Garnery et Obre, Paris, 1796. First edition. Octavo. Hardcover. Good: signs of wear as can be expected. Hinges a bit weekend. lxiv, 417, Portrait frontis, plate; viii, [2], 430, 4 plates; viii, 445, 4 plates; xii, 462, 18 plates, several folding. Text in French. Thunberg (11 November 1743 ? 8 August 1828), was a Swedish naturalist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. With the help of Burman and Gronovius, Thunberg entered the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, V.O.C.) as a surgeon on board of the Schoonzicht. As the East Indies where under Dutch control, the only way to enter the colonies was via the V.O.C. Hence, Thunberg debarked in December 1771. In March 1772, he reached Cape Town in South Africa. During his three-year stay, the Swede managed to perfect his Dutch and delve deeper into the scientific knowledge, culture and societal structure of the "Hottentotten", the Dutch name for the Khoikhoi, the native people of Western South Africa. Thunberg's travel to Africa is described in the second volume of his travelogue. During his three expeditions into the interior, Thunberg collected a significant number of specimens of both flora and fauna. At the initiative of Linnaeus, he graduated at Uppsala as Doctor of Medicine in absentia, while he was at the Cape in 1772. Thunberg left the Cape for Batavia on 2 March 1775. He arrived in Batavia on 18 May 1775, and left for Japan on 20 June. Shortly after the Schoonzicht's arrival on Deshima, Thunberg was appointed head surgeon of the trading post. William Faden (1750-1836)
1796. Faden's important map, showing the newly recognised boundaries of the United States and the short lived state of Franklinia. Faden first issued this map in 1777 and published thirteen further updated editions, the last being in 1843. This series of maps represent one of the most historically important cartographic depictions of the newly recognised independent republic. This edition, published 11 February 1796, states in the title that the map depicts the United States's boundaries according to the Treaty of 1784. The Treaty of Paris was originally signed on 3 September 1783, but wasn't ratified by the Congress of the Confederation and the King of Great Britain until 1784. The parties exchanged the ratified documents in Paris on 12 May 1784, which formally ended the American Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the United States of America. The map is partly based on John Mitchell's A Map of the British and French Dominions in North America, used by delegates during the treaty's negotiations that made the former Thirteen Colonies independent from the British Crown. Inaccuracies in Mitchell's map were later to cause problems in clearly defining the agreed borders. One such example stated that the boundary between U.S. territory and the British possessions to the north, would run 'through the Lake of the Woods to the northwestern most point thereof, and from thence on a due west course to the river Mississippi'. A note at the top left states 'Due West Course to the Missisipi', based on the wording of the Treaty. It was not known at the time that the source of the … [Click Below for Full Description]
