Group of three Autograph Letters Signed, two to fellow painters, David Roberts and Edward William Cooke and one to engineer, inventor and artist, James Nasmyth, each on blind embossed "Royal Scottish Academy of Painting & Sculptor" folded stationery, 8vo, Edinburgh, each dated July 17, 1862, and each with Royal Scottish Academy envelope bearing the Academy's embossed emblem

      - Hill writes to painters David Roberts and Edward William Cooke, and engineer, inventor and artist, James Nasmyth. Each is a letter of introduction for James Lorimer Graham, an American diplomat and book collector. Lorimer had also amassed a large collection of letters by contemporary luminaries with whom he corresponded. Hill refers to Grahams' acquaintance with notables in art and literature of his time. Graham had the letters bound in several volumes all of which were lost in a shipwreck. After his death, Graham's book collection was donated to his club in New York, The Century Association. Hill introduces Graham to fellow artist, David Roberts (1796-1864) in a two page letter written on first and second sides. "I had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of Mr. Graham and his lady during their [?] residence in Edinburgh. He is [?] interested in art & artists - in literary men and their works." Hill refers to an "Exhibition" which he describes as "excellent." He signs, "D. O Hill." Hill writes to Edward William Cooke, (1811-1880), English landscape and marine painter, offering a similar explanation of who Graham is and signs, "D. O Hill." Hill writes the third letter to Scottish engineer and artist, James Nasmyth ((1808-90), best remembered for his invention of the steam hammer. Nasmyth shared with Hill an interest in photography. Hill opens his letter with humorous reference to Nasmyth's hammer, "My Dear Hamish of the Hammer." Hill mentions that Graham is a friend of Nasmyth's, "favorite author Washington Irving. - and one who knows.all the good authors & artists of America." Hill signs, "D O Hill." Hill's tight handwriting gets smaller as he seems to squeeze his words into one page. The last lines and signature are compressed. Hill has written, "presented by J. Lorimer Graham." in the lower left corner of each envelope. Condition: horizontal and vertical folds visible in each letter, some soiling to the three envelopes along with slight wear to the black borders.

        String Quintet (op. 4)

1796 - BEETHOVEN, Ludwig van. Grand Quintetto per due Violini, due Viole, e Violoncello, dal Sigr. Luigi van Beethoven. Opera IV. Vienna: Artaria, [1796]. Original unbound parts (as issued). $3600.First edition of the instrumental parts of this 18th-century Beethoven score, fully engraved.Beethoven's first String Quintet is an adaptation of an earlier octet for wind instruments. The changes introduced between the octet and quintet versions are significant and relate to Haydn's influence on Beethoven. "In the short space of years between the octet (1792) and the quintet (1796) the great London symphonies of Haydn had appeared and". Beethoven felt this change of emphasis in his larger forms. Whereas the octet looks backward to the divertimenti and serenades of the past, the quintet expresses the more serious expression and intent of the great Viennese symphonic works. That Beethoven [saw the need for] this major revision, while still keeping the essential thematic structure intact, shows how far the court composer at Bonn had developed into the great symphonist of the future" (Scherman and Biancolli, 204-206). Eighteenth-century Beethoven scores are increasingly scarce. Faint owner ink-stamps to each part, contemporary ownership signature of W. Brand to outer wrapper.Light soiling to outer wrapper. An extremely good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Usus Logarithmorum Infinitomii in Theoria aequationum

One folding printed table. 1 p.l., 46 pp., one leaf of errata. Large 4to, orig. semi-stiff drab boards (extremities a bit rubbed). Leipzig: C.T. Rabenhorst, 1796. A remarkable discovery: this is essentially a workbook of the young and precocious Carl Friedrich Gauss, signed and dated by him "C. F. Gauss Sept. 7, 1796" on the inner front cover, at which time he was a 19-year old student in Göttingen. Gauss has not only studied the text carefully, making several corrections to the text, but has also made use of two blank pages at the end to carry out exercises (described in detail below). Mathematical manuscripts of Gauss are of the greatest rarity on the market, especially from his early formative years. Moritz von Prasse (1769-1814), was the son of Johann Moritz Prasse, who worked as a mediator in the Seven Years' War at the Court of Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg (and according to some sources may have been her lover). His service led to his family's elevation to the nobility on 31 July 1790. Prasse studied mathematics at the University of Leipzig, graduating in 1795, and rising to become professor there in 1799. He became a member of the Jablonowski Society in 1807 and maintained a correspondence on mathematical topics with Goethe. The great geometer August Ferdinand Möbius was among his students. Apart from the present work, his first, he also published De Reticules Cryptographicis (1799), a method of encrypting messages using rotating dials, and a set of Logarithmischen Tafeln in 1810. His extensive library of works on mathematics was bequeathed to his university on his death in 1814. The present work by Prasse is concerned with the "polynomial theorem," a generalization of the binomial theorem: whereas the binomial theorem gives a series expansion for powers of the sum of two terms, the polynomial theorem treats the sum of any finite (or even an infinite) number of terms. The formula was first proved by Carl Hindenburg (1741-1808), the founder of the modern theory of combinatorics. It has been known at least since the work of Pascal that the coefficients in the binomial expansion can be interpreted as numbers of combinations, and Hindenburg showed that the coefficients occurring in the polynomial theorem also had a combinatorial interpretation. He believed that this result could be used to provide a combinatorial basis for the whole of the theory of functions, and gathered around him a group of disciples, which became known as the "Combinatorial School," to develop and propagate this idea. This School included Prasse, as well as Johann Friedrich Pfaff, who became Gauss's teacher after he moved to Helmstedt in 1798. Although the Combinatorial School did not produce the significant advances Hindenburg had hoped for, it "was influential in Germany at the turn of the 19th century and became the basis of the mathematical syllabus of the Prussian gymnasium in the Humboldt educational system."-Jahnke, p. 265 (see below for citation). In this atmosphere it would have been natural for the young Gauss to have been required to study Prasse's work, one of the most recently published products of the Combinatorial School. Both of the exercises worked out by Gauss deal, like Prasse's work, with series expansions. The first exercise develops a series expansion of the indefinite integral of (1 - xn)-½ over the interval from 0 to 1, in increasing powers of 1/n (Gauss does not specify the range of integration but this is evident from the context). Gauss writes down the answer without explanation, presumably because the intermediate steps were so straightforward for him that he was able to carry them out mentally. His answer can be obtained by first expanding (1 - xn)-½ in increasing powers of xn and then integrating term by term. This yields terms involving 1/n + 1, 1/2n + 1, etc, which are then expanded in increasing powers of 1/n using the binomial theorem. Collecting powers of 1/n gives Gauss's series expansion of the integral. The coefficients of the powers of 1/n in this expansion are themselves infinite series, which Gauss sums by cleverly expressing them as definite integrals, which he then evaluates directly (again Gauss gives no explanation or working, but the integrals can be evaluated by standard methods with which Gauss was obviously very familiar). In the second exercise Gauss obtains a series expansion of ?(t + U), where U is a function of another variable u, in increasing powers of u. This can be done using Taylor's theorem, although this is not quite straightforward as the derivatives of ?(t + U) with respect to u have to be evaluated using the chain rule. Again it is evident that the exercise was nevertheless a simple matter for Gauss as the (correct) answer is written down without explanation or any intermediate steps (although there is one correction!). In fact, Gauss is actually treating a multi-variable case: the presence of multiple Σs indicates that he is treating a case in which ? is a function of several variables x1, x2,...,xn, but this does not cause him any difficulty. Gauss has also made, as mentioned above, corrections on the following pages: 1, 3, 4, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 16, 20, and 21. Fine and fresh condition. Preserved in a handsome black morocco-backed box. With the stamps of the "Gauss-Bibliothek" and the Royal Observatory at Göttingen on title with release stamp date 15 October 1951 on facing endpaper. ? Poggendorff II, 518. Tomash Library P108. See H. N. Jahnke, "Algebraic Analysis in Germany 1780-1840" in Historia Mathematica 20, pp. 265-284 for a detailed account of the work of the Combinatorial School.

[PARTIALLY-PRINTED BILL OF EXCHANGE FOR SUPPLIES, SIGNED BY JOHN WIGGLESWORTH, AGENT TO THE COMMANDER OF THE 1796 BRITISH OCCUPATION FORCE IN HAITI]

Port-au-Prince, 1796. Broadside, 3 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches, docketed on verso. Minor toning. Very good. A rare pay order for supplies intended for the British occupation force in Haiti, made out to M. Jure aine. The document is signed by John Wigglesworth, agent to the Commander of the British forces in Haiti and later Britain's envoy to the leader of the Haitian Revolution, Touissant Louverture. By early the next century, Louverture would become, ever so briefly, chief of the first free Black Republic in Haiti. The payee, Jure, has docketed the verso in French, with an additional docket in French transferring payment to Dutilh & Wachsmuth, a Philadelphia mercantile house. St. Domingo, the French part of Haiti, was a highly prosperous sugar, coffee, and cotton slave-estate island whose produce was described as exceeding that of the whole of the British Leeward and surrounding islands. In 1789 it was said to consist of 10,000 white people, 24,000 free mixed-race people, and 455,000 negro slaves. Although free, local laws decreed that mixed-race individuals could not accept any office or employment other than as planters. As news spread of the revolution, this group revolted but were roundly defeated. Part of the white response to the uprising was to create their own local assembly which excluded those of mixed race and resolved to transfer the island's allegiance to Great Britain, whereupon France sent Commissioners who according to some reports recruited negroes to fight the whites. Starting in August 1791, the slaves revolted in many towns, implementing major massacres and destruction of estates and establishing free communities of their own. They were led by Touissant Louverture, an ex-slave who later joined the French army after the country abolished slavery in 1793. Louverture swiftly rose to the rank of Commander in Chief of the French forces in Haiti, and proved to be an effective leader. In 1794, the British army, under the pretense of the Napoleonic war, sent a force from Jamaica that occupied Port-au-Prince and some other towns, a welcome development for the remaining white population on the island. This British force was commanded by General Sir Thomas Maitland of the 62 Foot Regiment, for whom Wigglesworth was the army agent. In the end, the British were not successful. By 1798, the British army had been virtually wiped out by yellow fever, and in April of that year, Maitland withdrew the British forces from Haiti under a guarantee from Louverture that the remaining pro-British whites would be protected. In May 1801, Touissant established St. Domingo as an independent republic. This alarmed the French so badly that they subsequently sent an army of 25,000 that recaptured the island within a year, and by a ruse conveyed Louverture to France where he soon after died in prison.

        Leonora (Lenore)

      T. Bensley pour J. Edwards, E. et S. HardingLondon [Londres] Ed. originale 1796 Grand in-folio (37,5 x 27 cm), [4 ff.]-35 pages, planches.

        Carey's General Atlas

Philadelphia: Published by Mathew Carey, 1796. Folio. (14 1/2 x 9 1/8 inches). Letterpress title, 44 (of 45) engraved maps, lacking the large-scale map of the United States by Samuel Lewis, as usual. (Some foxing and staining, a few separations at folds). Contemporary sheep-backed marbled paper covered boards (worn, spine split)An important early American atlas."Following the Revolution, there was considerable activity in the United States by American mapmakers and publishers. One of them, Mathew Carey, was a pioneer in producing cartographic works ... In 1795 Carey published The General Atlas for Carey's Edition of Guthrie's Geography Improved . William Guthrie's popular textbook was originally issued in London in 1770 ... The sixteen maps of American states included ... were reprinted with five others in his American Atlas , which was also published in 1795 ... The engravers of the maps in both atlases were Barker, Scott, James Thackara, and John Vallance, all of Philadelphia, Samuel Hill of Boston, Amos Doolittle of New Haven, and Benjamin Tanner of New York" (Ristow).Carey's 1796 General Atlas which followed, i.e. the present atlas, contained the same maps as the 1795 Guthrie Atlas, but without mention of Guthrie on the title and with the significant addition of Samuel Lewis's large map of the United States which had not been completed in time for the Guthrie Atlas. However, that map is nearly always lacking from the atlas, as here. The maps comprise 2 world maps (one double-hemispheric, one Mercator projection), 20 maps of Europe, Africa and Asia, 20 maps of American interest (18 of North America, plus a map of South America and a map of West Indies), a polar projection of the Arctic and a map of the Northern Pacific.Evans 30162; Phillips Atlases 683; Sabin 10858.

1796. Hill writes to painters David Roberts and Edward William Cooke, and engineer, inventor and artist, James Nasmyth. He is [?] interested in art & artists - in literary men and their works...." Hill refers to an "Exhibition" which he describes as "excellent." He signs, "D. - and one who knows...all the good authors & artists of America...." Hill signs, "D O Hill." Hill's tight handwriting gets smaller as he seems to squeeze his words into one page. The last lines and signature are compressed. Hill has written, "presented by J. Lorimer Graham...." in the lower left corner of each envelope. Condition: horizontal and vertical folds visible in each letter, some soiling to the three envelopes along with slight wear to the black borders.

The Shaver's New Sermon for the Fast Day. Respectfully inscribed to the Rev. and laborious clergy of the Church of England, by their humble servant, Pasquin Shaveblock, Esq. Shaver extraordinary

      S. Hand and H. Garson, New York 1796 - 12mo. 23, [1] pp. Crude title-page woodcut vignette, with caption: "I'll shave 'em like a punish'd soldier, DRY. No killing Swine shall make a sweeter cry." Collation: [A]6 B6. Complete. Modern sympathetic wrappers. Lightly toned, but the paper stock strong. Evidence of tape stain in two gutter margins. Early American imprint of a fake "Sermon for the Fast" which ridicules clerical, legal, political, and military "shavers." The text was attributed by Evans to John Macgowan, author of several works issued under the pseudonyms of "The Shaver" and "Pasquin Shaveblock." But Macgowan could not have written the present work as he had died in 1780, and the pamphlet first appeared in London in 1795. Furthermore, on the verso of the title-page are two "Testimonies in Favor of this Sermon," both of which were published fifteen years after Magowan's death. The one from the "Monthly Review" (1795, vol. XVI, no. 7, p. 357) reads in part: "This title-page needs little comment. The dullest reader will instantly perceive that this barber lathers with irony, and means to shave off all public fast-days with the razor of ridicule. The war, the administration, the clergy, -- all come in for a close-trimming; and the operation will be pronounced good-fun at the Goose and Grid-iron in St. Paul’s Church-yard, the Crown in Bow-lane, and the Bear in Bow-street. -- The text is: 'Take unto thee a Barber’s razor' (Ezek. V,1)." This is the very copy that first appeared in the 1978 MS Rare Books Catalogue 20 (item 413). Since that time only one other has been on the market (Sotheby's London, 28 January 1986, lot 60). When the operas of Christoph Willibald Gluck and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart-focusing more on psychology and less on virtuoso singing-came into vogue, a new style of libretto was needed. (However, Mozart did use an old Metastasio libretto for his renowned opera La clemenza di Tito.) The demise of castrato singing meant that Metastasio's operas dropped out of the repertory. - - Metastasio is known as an emotional, lyrical, and romantic poet. The chief dramatic situations are expressed by lyrics for two or three voices, embodying the several contending passions of the agents brought into conflict by the circumstances of the plot. The total result is not pure literature, but literature fit for musical effect. Language in Metastasio's hands is pure and limpid, perhaps due to his history as an improvisatory poet. He is said to have admired Torquato Tasso, Giambattista Marino, and Ovid." Wiki - - Charles Burney (1726 -1814) English music historian, composer and musician. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

First edition of this hand-colored encyclopedia of the peoples of five continents, an ambitious Enlightenment-era survey of the known world. The diplomat Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was born in Montreal in 1757 and died in Paris in 1810. In that brief span he produced a series of illustrated works devoted to ethnography, the Encyclopédie being the most extensive. Issued in parts, the work spans five volumes: Europe (divided into two sections), Asia, Africa, and America. Grasset de Saint-Sauveur records the customs and costumes of each local population, from his own countrymen through increasingly remote civilizations, concluding with the latest discoveries in the New World. The lasting appeal of the work lies in the hundreds of vividly hand-colored plates that represent the peoples of the world, framed as glimpses into everyday life: a Neapolitan fruit vendor with his basket of grapes, a Senegalese warrior carrying both spear and gun, an Indian nabab with parasol and hookah, a West Indian drummer and dancers, a Tahitian girl in full court dress, an Indonesian astride an elephant, a Chinese Buddhist monk, Turkish women enjoying the baths, Bohemian peasants toasting in a tavern, a group of young Russians sledding. Like other French artists of the period, Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was particularly captivated by the recent Pacific exploration of Cook and La Perouse, and the final America volume is filled with images inspired by those voyages: portraits of the natives of Nootka Sound, Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand, and more. Shortly after the publication of the Encyclopédie, Grasset de Saint-Sauveur would publish a rare composite image of many of these figures on a single plate dedicated to the New World, titled "Tableau des Decouvertes du Cap. Cook & de la Perouse." The title pages, as well as the advertisement in the first volume, describe the Encyclopédie as complete with 432 plates, a number echoed by bibliographers Brunet, Colas and others. However, the present example includes 438 plates, inclusive of the four frontispieces, more plates than any other recorded copy. The six additional plates, supplied from one of Grasset de Saint-Sauveur's later works in this vein, are "Russien" and "Russienne" in Volume II, "Habitants de la Carie" in Volume III, and "Sauvage de la Guiane," "Sauvagesse de la Guiane," and "Piaye-Medecin de la Guiane" in Volume V. The set features gilt borders around each plate and delicate hand coloring; most extant sets do not include the gold border, suggesting that this example may have been part of a deluxe issue. Text in French. Brunet II: 1711 (calling for 432 plates); Colas 1292 (calling for 428 plates and 4 frontispieces); Forbes I:249 and I:264; Lipperheide Ac 11 (calling for 428 plates and 4 frontispieces). A spectacular copy, in a handsome early binding. Seventy-two parts divided into five quarto volumes, bound in four, early nineteenth-century full vellum with central arabesques tooled in blind to center of boards, raised bands, manuscript titles to spines, green silk ribbon ties. Four hand-colored engraved frontispieces and 434 hand-colored engraved plates depicting the peoples of the world, borders heightened in gold, tissue guards. Many text leaves and plates printed on blue paper. Four pages of publisher's advertisements in volume I; volumes I and III-V bound without lists of plates. Ink shelfmarks and bookplates of the Earl of Dalhousie, Austin Smith, K.K. Wood, and J.R.P. to front pastedowns.

Ittiolitologia Veronese del Museo Bozziano ora annesso a quello del conte Giovambattista Gazola e di altri gabinetti di fossili Veronesi con la versione Latina.

Verona, Giuliari, 1796-1809. Folio (54.7 x 38.6 cm), lii, cccxxiii pp., 76 plates (19 double-sized, five multiple folded). Contemporary style half calf over marbled boards; spine with gilt ornaments and title.= Only edition of the important precursor to the ichthyological works of Louis Agassiz, written by the Roman catholic priest Giovanni Serafino Volta (1764-1842), using material from the Museum of Count Gazola. Volta also worked for the famous natural history museum Museo di Lazzaro Spallanzani. It took 13 years to complete the work and therefore complete copies, like this one, are rare. It includes the important text and the Carta Topografica di Bolca e Vestena Nuova. The fish specimens figured are from the famous Monta Bolca site near Verona. The illustrations of the specimens are true-size, resulting in some spectacularly large plates, up to 150 cm wide. The last auction record, and the only one this century, was at the Berès sale in Paris (2006) at Euro 18,000 hammer, thus for over Euro 21,500 (then approximately GBP 19,000) in total. Title-page a bit soiled, Some marginal dampstaining to a few leaves, otherwise a very good, clean copy with the widest possible margins. Dean, p. 590; Nissen ZBI, 4289; Ward and Carozzi, 2260.
