Choir Breviary (Franciscan use) and other texts, including the Ordinationes (Franciscan Ceremonial); Indutus planeta (Order of the Private Mass); Franciscan Liturgical Statutes from Metz, 1254; Benedictions; decorated medieval manuscript on parchment with musical notation

DECORATED MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT IN LATIN ON PARCHMENT WITH MUSICAL NOTATION, Central or Northern Italy (Umbria?), c. 1260-1300, with later additions including a calendar of c. 1350. 265 x 185 mm. 225 folios on parchment, missing five leaves (collation, i8 ii2 [original structure uncertain; missing text after 1] iii11 [out of 12, missing 2, with loss of text] iv-vi12 vii10 [out of 12, missing 3 and 11, both with loss of text] viii-xi12 xii7 [out of 8, 8 cancelled with no loss of text] xiii11 [out of 12, missing 2, with loss of text] xiv8 xv-xx12), catchwords and quire signatures, written in a rounded southern Gothic bookhand in two columns of 22 lines (justification, 189-192 x 127-130 mm.), musical notation copied in two columns of 36 lines in square notation on red 4-line staves (justification, 203 x 120 mm.), ruled in lead with the top two, middle two, and bottom two horizontal rules full across and single full-length vertical bounding lines inside, outside, and between the columns, additional rules in lower and outer margins, red rubrics, red or blue paraphs, large "KL" monograms in red and blue in the calendar, 2- to 3-line red or blue initials with contrasting pen decoration, numerous signs of centuries of use throughout. BINDING: Bound in Italy in the fifteenth century brown leather, blind-stamped with palmettes, rope-interlace, fleur-de-lis, and foliage, over substantial beveled wooden boards, rounded spine with four raised bads, four corner bosses on upper and lower boards, two clasp and catch fasteners, back to front (restored), edges once dyed green(?), rebacked with the spine laid down, resewn, with reinforcement strips added in the middle of quires, new head and tail bands, pastedowns comprise two fragments from another manuscript, copied in thirteenth-century Italy. TEXT: This volume is a Breviary, a liturgical manuscript that contains all the texts require for the celebration of the Divine Office. Beyond that, however, this large-format manuscript is a marvelous artifact of Franciscan life and worship. Used for singing by the Choir, it is notable for its content, including other texts not commonly found in more portable Franciscan Breviaries: the Franciscan Ceremonial (known to its editor in only 35 manuscripts), the Indutus planeta(Haymo of Faversham's description of the private Mass), the Franciscan liturgical statutes of 1254, and others. It is accompanied by additions over at least two centuries and other plentiful signs of early use. PROVENANCE: Copied in Italy for Franciscan use, as suggested by the evidence of the text, as well as the style of the script and decoration. Textual evidence shows that this must date after 1260, since it includes the Ritual for the Last Sacraments and other texts promulgated around then. The texts on ff. 1-10v, the calendar and the two following folios, are likely later additions, given differences in the script and decoration, but also Franciscan. Numerous additions to the calendar in many different hands, some of which added saints particular to central and Northern Italy. Belonged to Thomas Rodd (1796-1849), London; sold by Sotheby's, 2 February 1850, lot 120. Belonged to James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps (1820-1889). Halliwell-Phillips presented the book to Plymouth Proprietary Library (see bookplate on inside front cover); sold by the library, 12 December 1977, lot 62. CONDITION: Parchment cut away from the lower edges of about 10 leaves, sometimes patched with parchment or paper from other manuscripts, loss of text copied in black on f. 104 (powdered/rubbed away), bottom corners of ff. 166-177v very worn, outer corners soiled, ink has faded on some folios, some worming on the opening and closing folios, but otherwise in fairly good condition. Full description and photographs available (TM 785).

The Rural Economy of the West of England: including Devonshire; and Parts of Somersetshire, Dorsetshire, and Cornwall. Together with Minutes in Practice

      - Double-page frontis. map. 1 p.l., xxxiv, 332 pp.; xxiv, 358, [3] pp. Two vols. 8vo, cont. mottled calf, floral fillet round sides, flat spines gilt, red & green morocco lettering pieces on spines. London: G. Nicol et al., 1796. First edition and a lovely set of the penultimate survey undertaken by Marshall of the farming practices of six different regions of England. "Modern agricultural historians have generally held that Marshall's works on English farming are superior to those of his rival, Arthur Young, as they are more systematically arranged and based on a more thorough knowledge of a district by personal residence there. Unlike Young, Marshall was cautious about experimentation, preferring rather to advocate the best practices approved by experienced farmers. On the other hand, he lacked Young's pithy and more readable style, and acquired fewer close contacts with the leading farming figures of the time. Marshall's career, indeed, suffered in some degree from his native bluntness and acid tongue, his pride, and his sensibility to slights. Nevertheless, from the independence of his views arose his remarkably early support for agricultural education, and his belief in the necessity of studying agriculture on a regional basis, both of which were ideas well before their time."-ODNB.         The Shaver's New Sermon for the Fast Day. Respectfully inscribed to the Rev. and laborious clergy of the Church of England, by their humble servant, Pasquin Shaveblock, Esq. Shaver extraordinary

New York: S. Hand and H. Garson, 1796. 12mo. 23, [1] pp. Crude title-page woodcut vignette, with caption: "I'll shave 'em like a punish'd soldier, DRY. No killing Swine shall make a sweeter cry." Collation: [A]6 B6. Complete. Modern sympathetic wrappers. Lightly toned, but the paper stock strong. Evidence of tape stain in two gutter margins. Early American imprint of a fake "Sermon for the Fast" which ridicules clerical, legal, political, and military "shavers." The text was attributed by Evans to John Macgowan, author of several works issued under the pseudonyms of "The Shaver" and "Pasquin Shaveblock." But Macgowan could not have written the present work as he had died in 1780, and the pamphlet first appeared in London in 1795. Furthermore, on the verso of the title-page are two "Testimonies in Favor of this Sermon," both of which were published fifteen years after Magowan's death. The one from the "Monthly Review" (1795, vol. XVI, no. 7, p. 357) reads in part: "This title-page needs little comment. The dullest reader will instantly perceive that this barber lathers with irony, and means to shave off all public fast-days with the razor of ridicule. The war, the administration, the clergy, -- all come in for a close-trimming; and the operation will be pronounced good-fun at the Goose and Grid-iron in St. Paul?s Church-yard, the Crown in Bow-lane, and the Bear in Bow-street. -- The text is: 'Take unto thee a Barber?s razor' (Ezek. V,1)." This is the very copy that first appeared in the 1978 MS Rare Books Catalogue 20 (item 413). Since that time only one other has been on the market (Sotheby's London, 28 January 1986, lot 60).         A TREATISE ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF CANAL NAVIGATION; EXHIBITING THE NUMEROUS ADVANTAGES TO BE DERIVED FROM SMALL CANALS...WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE MACHINERY FOR FACILITATING CONVEYANCE BY WATER THROUGH THE MOST MOUNTAINOUS COUNTRIES, INDEPENDENT OF LOCKS AND AQUEDUCTS...

London, 1796. xvi,144pp. plus seventeen plates (without the leaves of advertisements called for by Howes). Quarto. Original boards. Spine chipped. Hinges cracked, with old glue repairs. Internally quite clean. Overall just about very good. In a half green morocco clamshell box. First edition, the state with text ("Addition") on p.144. Fulton was a skilled artist, inventor, and civil engineer. A native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he spent twenty years in England developing his talents and inventions. His chief work was in the design of canal systems, so important to commercial activity in 19th- century America, and in the development of steamboats. The engraved plates for Fulton's ...TREATISE... are after original drawings executed by the author himself. They represent mechanical designs and boats to show "the numerous advantages to be derived from small canals." "He signed himself [on the titlepage of this work] 'Robert Fulton, Civil Engineer,' which was the first formal announcement of his new occupation. Copies of this treatise were sent to Gen. Washington and the governor of Pennsylvania. It not only dealt with the practical contrivances for canals and the technicalities of his own inventions, but also contained complete and accurate computations of all construction and operating costs. It contained, too, much prophecy in regard to the economic and political advantages which would accrue to nations adopting great inland systems of canals" - DAB. HOWES F418. SABIN 26201. Z. mit Rückenvergoldung und 2 farb. Rückenschildern

Amsterdam (d. i. Hamburg, Villaume), 1796. "Man will meinen Kopf. – Goed.         Usus Logarithmorum Infinitomii in Theoria aequationum

      - One folding printed table. 1 p.l., 46 pp., one leaf of errata. Large 4to, orig. semi-stiff drab boards (extremities a bit rubbed). Leipzig: C.T. Rabenhorst, 1796. A remarkable discovery: this is essentially a workbook of the young and precocious Carl Friedrich Gauss, signed and dated by him "C. F. Gauss Sept. 7, 1796" on the inner front cover, at which time he was a 19-year old student in Göttingen. Gauss has not only studied the text carefully, making several corrections to the text, but has also made use of two blank pages at the end to carry out exercises (described in detail below). Mathematical manuscripts of Gauss are of the greatest rarity on the market, especially from his early formative years. Moritz von Prasse (1769-1814), was the son of Johann Moritz Prasse, who worked as a mediator in the Seven Years' War at the Court of Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg (and according to some sources may have been her lover). His service led to his family's elevation to the nobility on 31 July 1790. Prasse studied mathematics at the University of Leipzig, graduating in 1795, and rising to become professor there in 1799. He became a member of the Jablonowski Society in 1807 and maintained a correspondence on mathematical topics with Goethe. The great geometer August Ferdinand Möbius was among his students. Apart from the present work, his first, he also published De Reticules Cryptographicis (1799), a method of encrypting messages using rotating dials, and a set of Logarithmischen Tafeln in 1810. His extensive library of works on mathematics was bequeathed to his university on his death in 1814. The present work by Prasse is concerned with the "polynomial theorem," a generalization of the binomial theorem: whereas the binomial theorem gives a series expansion for powers of the sum of two terms, the polynomial theorem treats the sum of any finite (or even an infinite) number of terms. The formula was first proved by Carl Hindenburg (1741-1808), the founder of the modern theory of combinatorics. It has been known at least since the work of Pascal that the coefficients in the binomial expansion can be interpreted as numbers of combinations, and Hindenburg showed that the coefficients occurring in the polynomial theorem also had a combinatorial interpretation. He believed that this result could be used to provide a combinatorial basis for the whole of the theory of functions, and gathered around him a group of disciples, which became known as the "Combinatorial School," to develop and propagate this idea. This School included Prasse, as well as Johann Friedrich Pfaff, who became Gauss's teacher after he moved to Helmstedt in 1798. Although the Combinatorial School did not produce the significant advances Hindenburg had hoped for, it "was influential in Germany at the turn of the 19th century and became the basis of the mathematical syllabus of the Prussian gymnasium in the Humboldt educational system."-Jahnke, p. 265 (see below for citation). In this atmosphere it would have been natural for the young Gauss to have been required to study Prasse's work, one of the most recently published products of the Combinatorial School. Both of the exercises worked out by Gauss deal, like Prasse's work, with series expansions. The first exercise develops a series expansion of the indefinite integral of (1 - xn)-½ over the interval from 0 to 1, in increasing powers of 1/n (Gauss does not specify the range of integration but this is evident from the context). Gauss writes down the answer without explanation, presumably because the intermediate steps were so straightforward for him that he was able to carry them out mentally. His answer can be obtained by first expanding (1 - xn)-½ in increasing powers of xn and then integrating term by term. This yields terms involving 1/n + 1, 1/2n + 1, etc, which are then expanded in increasing powers of 1/n using the binomial theorem. Collecting powers of 1/n gives Gauss's series expansion of the integral. Th [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Sermons to young women

Printed at Boston : By Thomas Hall ; For S. Hall, Thomas and Andrews, J. White, D. West, E. Larkin, W.P. Blake, J. West, and J. Nancrede, 1796-01-01. Hardcover. Acceptable. First Boston Edition. 276 pages. 12mo. Bound in contemporary sheep. Red Moroccan spine label. Front joint cracked. Foxing browning. Contemporary signature of James Hyde. Evans 30435. First published 1766, Fordyce's sermons was a collection of instructions on how a woman should behave. The book was widely reprinted throughout the 18th century, with this copy being the first Boston edition. To Fordyce, women were to be attentive to men, attractive, and illustrate Christian ideals of womanhood and modesty. Sermons to Young Woman came under heavy criticism in Mary Wollstonecraft's "Vindication of the Rights of Women," published 1792. In Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," Mr. Collins reads aloud from Sermons to the Bennet sisters. "Lydia gaped as he opened the volume, and before he had, with very monotonous solemnity, read three pages, she interrupted him". (Austen, Pride and Prejudice, Bentley, 1853. 60 p.) Austen's portrayal of Mr. Collins' reading of Sermons gives an intertextual criticism of the stifling patriarchalism and subservience promoted by Fordyce's outmoded Sermons. The value of this book isn't in its precepts, rather in illustrating the history of the struggle for women's equality. The perceptions about women promoted in this book kept women from being full members of society and colored the views of 18th and early 19th century American and British society.

Miscellaneous Works of Edward Gibbon, Esquire

1796 - GIBBON, Edward. Miscellaneous Works of Edward Gibbon, Esquire. With Memoirs of His Life and Writings, Composed by Himself: Illustrated from His Letters, with Occasional Notes and Narrative by John Lord Sheffield. London: Printed for A. Strahan, and T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, 1796. Two volumes. Quarto, contemporary full speckled calf rebacked with original elaborately gilt-decorated spines laid down, red and green morocco spine labels, original marbled endpapers. $2000.First edition of Gibbon's memoirs, letters, and additional works, posthumously collected and published by his closest friend, Lord Sheffield. When Gibbon died in 1794, he left his personal papers to Lord Sheffield, who carefully selected and edited them to ensure that his friend would not be unflatteringly exposed to public scrutiny. While Sheffield later published an expanded edition of Gibbon's letters and memoirs, his concern for his friend's privacy persisted throughout his life and he forbid, in his will, the publication of any additional papers. He writes in his preface to the Miscellaneous Works, "Few men, I believe, have ever so fully unveiled their own character, by a minute narrative of their sentiments and pursuits, as Mr. Gibbon will here be found to have done; not with study and labour-not with an affected frankness-but with a genuine confession of his little foibles and peculiarities, and a good-humoured and natural display of his own conduct and opinions." Norton, 131.         Bibliothecae Josephi Garampii Cardinalis. Materiarum Ordine digestus et Notis Bibliographicis Instructus a Mariano de Romanis

Five vols. 8vo, cont. half-vellum & decorated boards, contrasting leather lettering pieces on spines. Rome: de Romanis, 1796. One of the most important of all private library catalogues as well as one of the rarest; this catalogue was compiled for an inventory sale at the fixed prices marked. "This catalogue deserves a place among the best classified polymathic catalogues for its own sake and as a complement to the contemporary Firmiana and Pinelliana. Prefect of the Vatican archives from 1749 to 1772 and entrusted with the duty of buying books for the Vatican library, Cardinal Garampi (1725-92), was later nuncio in Warsaw and Vienna. His official life explains the nature and quality of his library and the opportunities he had to acquire books… "This well-printed catalogue compiled by Mariano de Romanis…has good tables of contents and excellent indexes of authors (with the titles of books) in each of the four volumes. The prices are printed in the catalogue. The Garampi catalogue with 16,630 items considerably exceeds both the Pinelli catalogue with 12,563 items (12,859 items in the London sale catalogue) and the Firmian catalogue with about 13,000 items… "The figures give no complete idea of the library, but no one can reconstruct it because De Romanis buried thousands of pamphlets in single lots. There are, for example, about 4600 Biblical tracts in Lot No. 8751 and 700 more in the next two lots. With 587 and 580 items, respectively, Lot Nos. 8810 and 8811 devoted to literary history and bibliography would have been sufficient to make any library fortunate enough to acquire them an important center for bibliographical studies. Had De Romanis listed these tracts individually, the Garampi catalogue would be an invaluable guide to eighteenth-century bibliography. But to expect this is to ask for more than he thought of doing and more than the circumstances permitted. The detailed classification, which is reliable as far as I have tested it, the indexes, and the good bibliographical and critical notes make this catalogue a joy to read."-Taylor, Book Catalogues, pp. 242-43. The collection was particularly strong in history (lots 8818-16,630). Vol. I contains a life of Garampi by Girolamo Amati. Fine set. ❧ Nicolini 66. Pollard & Ehrman, p. 204 & Table XXV.

Bibliothecae Samuelis S.R.I. Com. Teleki de Szék. Pars Prima [-Tertia]

Finely engraved port. of the collector & engraved title in Vol. I. xxxvii, [11], 313, [25] pp.; xxxvi, [14], 436, [41] pp.; 1 p.l., iv, [4], 285, [25] pp., [3], 290-672, [30] pp. Three vols. (Vol. III in two parts). 8vo, modern paste-paper boards, uncut. Vienna: M. Pulio, 1796 [Vol. I]; M.A. Schmidt, 1800 [Vol. II]; A. Pichler, 1811 [Vol. III]. First edition of one of the rarest of all private library catalogues; this copy lacks, as usual, the fourth volume published in 1819. WorldCat locates only one possibly complete set (and the bibliographical details of that set, in Hungary, are sketchy); in the U.S., the only three sets located by WorldCat - Newberry, Columbia, and Harvard - all lack the fourth volume (Harvard lacks the third volume as well). The Oxford copy also lacks the fourth volume. Teleki (1739-1822), formed his collection over a long period and his books relating to Hungarian and Transylvanian history were only rivaled by the Szechenyi library. After Teleki's death, the family donated in 1826 a large part of the library - about 30,000 volumes - to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and this was the beginning of the Academy's library. The Teleki catalogue, along with that of Szechenyi, are the basis for all bibliographical information relating to Hungarian authors, history, and literature. They have never been rendered obsolete by subsequent publications. Fine set and of great rarity. Our copy has the very rare and attractive frontispiece portrait of Teleki which is usually missing. ?         Group of three Autograph Letters Signed, two to fellow painters, David Roberts and Edward William Cooke and one to engineer, inventor and artist, James Nasmyth, each on blind embossed "Royal Scottish Academy of Painting & Sculptor" folded stationery, 8vo, Edinburgh, each dated July 17, 1862, and each with Royal Scottish Academy envelope bearing the Academy's embossed emblem

      - Hill writes to painters David Roberts and Edward William Cooke, and engineer, inventor and artist, James Nasmyth. Each is a letter of introduction for James Lorimer Graham, an American diplomat and book collector. Lorimer had also amassed a large collection of letters by contemporary luminaries with whom he corresponded. Hill refers to Grahams' acquaintance with notables in art and literature of his time. Graham had the letters bound in several volumes all of which were lost in a shipwreck. After his death, Graham's book collection was donated to his club in New York, The Century Association. Hill introduces Graham to fellow artist, David Roberts (1796-1864) in a two page letter written on first and second sides. "I had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of Mr. Graham and his lady during their [?] residence in Edinburgh. He is [?] interested in art & artists - in literary men and their works." Hill refers to an "Exhibition" which he describes as "excellent." He signs, "D. O Hill." Hill writes to Edward William Cooke, (1811-1880), English landscape and marine painter, offering a similar explanation of who Graham is and signs, "D. O Hill." Hill writes the third letter to Scottish engineer and artist, James Nasmyth ((1808-90), best remembered for his invention of the steam hammer. Nasmyth shared with Hill an interest in photography. Hill opens his letter with humorous reference to Nasmyth's hammer, "My Dear Hamish of the Hammer." Hill mentions that Graham is a friend of Nasmyth's, "favorite author Washington Irving. - and one who knows.all the good authors & artists of America." Hill signs, "D O Hill." Hill's tight handwriting gets smaller as he seems to squeeze his words into one page. The last lines and signature are compressed. Hill has written, "presented by J. Lorimer Graham." in the lower left corner of each envelope. Condition: horizontal and vertical folds visible in each letter, some soiling to the three envelopes along with slight wear to the black borders.

Original unbound parts (as issued). $3600.First edition of the instrumental parts of this 18th-century Beethoven score, fully engraved.Beethoven's first String Quintet is an adaptation of an earlier octet for wind instruments. The changes introduced between the octet and quintet versions are significant and relate to Haydn's influence on Beethoven. "In the short space of years between the octet (1792) and the quintet (1796) the great London symphonies of Haydn had appeared and". Beethoven felt this change of emphasis in his larger forms. Whereas the octet looks backward to the divertimenti and serenades of the past, the quintet expresses the more serious expression and intent of the great Viennese symphonic works. That Beethoven [saw the need for] this major revision, while still keeping the essential thematic structure intact, shows how far the court composer at Bonn had developed into the great symphonist of the future" (Scherman and Biancolli, 204-206). Eighteenth-century Beethoven scores are increasingly scarce. Faint owner ink-stamps to each part, contemporary ownership signature of W. Brand to outer wrapper.Light soiling to outer wrapper.         Usus Logarithmorum Infinitomii in Theoria aequationum

One folding printed table. The coefficients of the powers of 1/n in this expansion are themselves infinite series, which Gauss sums by cleverly expressing them as definite integrals, which he then evaluates directly (again Gauss gives no explanation or working, but the integrals can be evaluated by standard methods with which Gauss was obviously very familiar). In the second exercise Gauss obtains a series expansion of ?(t + U), where U is a function of another variable u, in increasing powers of u. This can be done using Taylor's theorem, although this is not quite straightforward as the derivatives of ?(t + U) with respect to u have to be evaluated using the chain rule. Again it is evident that the exercise was nevertheless a simple matter for Gauss as the (correct) answer is written down without explanation or any intermediate steps (although there is one correction!). In fact, Gauss is actually treating a multi-variable case: the presence of multiple Σs indicates that he is treating a case in which ? is a function of several variables x1, x2,...,xn, but this does not cause him any difficulty. Gauss has also made, as mentioned above, corrections on the following pages: 1, 3, 4, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, 16, 20, and 21. Fine and fresh condition. Preserved in a handsome black morocco-backed box. With the stamps of the "Gauss-Bibliothek" and the Royal Observatory at Göttingen on title with release stamp date 15 October 1951 on facing endpaper. ? Poggendorff II, 518. Tomash Library P108. See H. N. Jahnke, "Algebraic Analysis in Germany 1780-1840" in Historia Mathematica 20, pp. 265-284 for a detailed account of the work of the Combinatorial School.
