Arte de la lengua Tacala y manual Tagalog [bound with, as issued] Manual Tagalog

1796 - Printed in Manila on rice paper, a cornerstone Tagalog language manual. 1796. Sampaloc, Manila. Imprenta de Nuestra Senora de Loreto, por Pedro Arguelles de la Concepcion. 4to (205 x 155 mm). [16], 148, [6]; [2], 247, [3] pp. Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in ink, minor wear and soiling, but an untouched binding. Light browning throughout, coming disbound in spots, closed tears to leaves T4-5. 12,000 $ A fine copy, in its absolutely genuine condition, of the second edition of this guide to Tagalog, to-date a national language of the Philippines. Totanes (1688 – 1748) was a Spanish Franciscan Friar and missionary to Mexico and the Philippines; when 17 years old, Totanes entered the Franciscan Order, which would eventually take him to the Philippines, at age 26. That he did on board the Virgen de Atocha, first arriving to Mexico, and a year later –after teaching philosophy and theology at the Convento de San Agustin- sailed from Acapulco towards Manila. He resided in the Philippines for c. 30 years, working with natives and eventually appointed Prior to the Convent of Manila. “This Arte by Father Totanes is considered the best of all the writings by whose help the Spaniards learnt the Tagala language. Taking it is a whole it is based on the work of father San José, whose first edition was published in 1610; but as it was published so many years later it also combines the various improvements introduced by the Dominican and other writers Being printed entirely on rice paper, copies of this work are usually damaged or very badly wormed” (Maggs Bros, Spanish Books, 1927). According to Retana, this is the best of all manuals on the Tagalog language. It is today spoken by almost 25 million people in the Philippines –mostly-, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia; nowadays, it is discussed if the Filipino language is nothing other than the Tagalog, with influence of English. The Arte is a primary source to the language, and one of the most significant Asian printings of the 18th century in the field of linguistics.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Cimelia Physica. Figures of rare and curious Quadrupeds, Birds, etc. With descriptions by George Shaw.

London, 1796. .  Bird Books p. 94; Nissen IVB 638; Stafleu and Cowan 6033; Wood p. 465; Zimmer p. 585. .

        The Fables …

London: by T. Bensley for J. Edwards and E. & S. Harding,, 1796. ornamented with engravings from the pencil of the Right Hon. Lady Diana Beauclerc. London, by T. Bensley for J. Edwards and E. Harding, 1797; [bound with:] BÜRGER, Gottfried Augustus. Leonora. Translated from the German … by W. R. Spencer. With designs by the Right Honourable Lady Diana Beauclerc. 2 works bound in 1, folio (365 × 255 mm). Fine contemporary binding of green straight-grain morocco, spine attractively gilt in compartments with interlocking wave tools, gilt lettered in second panel, sides with thick-and-thin rule enclosing a floral scroll border in gilt, gilt inner dentelles, pink endpapers, gilt edges, fore-edge gauffered. Fables: 9 engraved plates, 15 engraved vignettes; Leonora: engraved frontispiece, 4 engraved plates, 4 engraved vignettes, most signed by Bartolozzi after Beauclerc. Leonora with parallel text, German and English. A little rubbing, some offsetting and faint browning, a most attractive pair. First editions with these Bartolozzi engravings, the only two works illustrated by Lady Diana Beauclerc, here together in handsome contemporary full morocco. Dryden's adaptations of Chaucer and Boccaccio were among the chief reasons for his perhaps surprisingly high place in the esteem of the Romantic poets, especially Coleridge, Keats, Byron and Scott, while Bürger's Leonora inspired a frenzy of competing English versions around this time. Ironically Bürger had found his ballad form not in German literature, but largely through the medium of Percy's Reliques; from Leonora it was reabsorbed into English through the Lyrical Ballads, most directly Wordsworth's "The Idiot Boy".

SCHEDULE of Papers. [41 papers]. [Collection of Printed Internal Communications in the Royal Navy, October 1796 - January 1797, Pertaining to the French Expedition to Ireland]. (No title page, apparently as issued; completed from internal information).

N.p., British Admiralty. 1796 -1797.. Soft cover. 4to, 29cm, un-paginated, c.55pp., including several folding tables, in the original plain blue wraps, frayed along the spine, wraps a bit wrinkled, very good condition, very rare. French intended to land a large expeditionary force in Ireland during the winter of 1796 1797 which would join with the United Irishmen and drive the British out of Ireland. These documents concern the state and condition of His Majesty's ships, and orders and letters concerning their sailing and deployment. This is all in reaction to the French expedition to Ireland, which was monitored by the British Fleet under Colpoys. Despite all the bustle reported in these communications, the British fleet was ineffective and Colpoys was replaced. Fortunately for the British, though not so fortunate for Irish patriots, the weather accomplished what the Royal Navy could not, sending the French fleet home in tatters. This is a fascinating document from the Napoleonic Wars, pertaining to one of the more colorful incidents of that troubled period. - With the bookplate of well known collector and bibliographer, Mario Witt. .

Arte de la lengua Tacala y manual Tagalog [bound with, as issued] Manual Tagalog

A fine copy, in its absolutely genuine condition, of the second edition of this guide to Tagalog, to-date a national language of the Philippines. Totanes (1688 - 1748) was a Spanish Franciscan Friar and missionary to Mexico and the Philippines; when 17 years old, Totanes entered the Franciscan Order, which would eventually take him to the Philippines, at age 26. That he did on board the Virgen de Atocha, first arriving to Mexico, and a year later -after teaching philosophy and theology at the Convento de San Agustin- sailed from Acapulco towards Manila. He resided in the Philippines for c. 30 years, working with natives and eventually appointed Prior to the Convent of Manila. "This Arte by Father Totanes is considered the best of all the writings by whose help the Spaniards learnt the Tagala language. Taking it is a whole it is based on the work of father San José, whose first edition was published in 1610; but as it was published so many years later it also combines the various improvements introduced by the Dominican and other writers... Being printed entirely on rice paper, copies of this work are usually damaged or very badly wormed" (Maggs Bros, Spanish Books, 1927). According to Retana, this is the best of all manuals on the Tagalog language. It is today spoken by almost 25 million people in the Philippines -mostly-, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia; nowadays, it is discussed if the Filipino language is nothing other than the Tagalog, with influence of English. The Arte is a primary source to the language, and one of the most significant Asian printings of the 18th century in the field of linguistics.

First edition of this hand-colored encyclopedia of the peoples of five continents, an ambitious Enlightenment-era survey of the known world. The diplomat Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was born in Montreal in 1757 and died in Paris in 1810. In that brief span he produced a series of illustrated works devoted to ethnography, the Encyclopédie being the most extensive. Issued in parts, the work spans five volumes: Europe (divided into two sections), Asia, Africa, and America. Grasset de Saint-Sauveur records the customs and costumes of each local population, from his own countrymen through increasingly remote civilizations, concluding with the latest discoveries in the New World. The lasting appeal of the work lies in the hundreds of vividly hand-colored plates that represent the peoples of the world, framed as glimpses into everyday life: a Neapolitan fruit vendor with his basket of grapes, a Senegalese warrior carrying both spear and gun, an Indian nabab with parasol and hookah, a West Indian drummer and dancers, a Tahitian girl in full court dress, an Indonesian astride an elephant, a Chinese Buddhist monk, Turkish women enjoying the baths, Bohemian peasants toasting in a tavern, a group of young Russians sledding. Like other French artists of the period, Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was particularly captivated by the recent Pacific exploration of Cook and La Perouse, and the final America volume is filled with images inspired by those voyages: portraits of the natives of Nootka Sound, Hawaii, Tahiti, New Zealand, and more. Shortly after the publication of the Encyclopédie, Grasset de Saint-Sauveur would publish a rare composite image of many of these figures on a single plate dedicated to the New World, titled "Tableau des Decouvertes du Cap. Cook & de la Perouse." The title pages, as well as the advertisement in the first volume, describe the Encyclopédie as complete with 432 plates, a number echoed by bibliographers Brunet, Colas and others. However, the present example includes 438 plates, inclusive of the four frontispieces, more plates than any other recorded copy. The six additional plates, supplied from one of Grasset de Saint-Sauveur's later works in this vein, are "Russien" and "Russienne" in Volume II, "Habitants de la Carie" in Volume III, and "Sauvage de la Guiane," "Sauvagesse de la Guiane," and "Piaye-Medecin de la Guiane" in Volume V. The set features gilt borders around each plate and delicate hand coloring; most extant sets do not include the gold border, suggesting that this example may have been part of a deluxe issue. Text in French. Brunet II: 1711 (calling for 432 plates); Colas 1292 (calling for 428 plates and 4 frontispieces); Forbes I:249 and I:264; Lipperheide Ac 11 (calling for 428 plates and 4 frontispieces). A spectacular copy, in a handsome early binding. Seventy-two parts divided into five quarto volumes, bound in four, early nineteenth-century full vellum with central arabesques tooled in blind to center of boards, raised bands, manuscript titles to spines, green silk ribbon ties. Four hand-colored engraved frontispieces and 434 hand-colored engraved plates depicting the peoples of the world, borders heightened in gold, tissue guards. Many text leaves and plates printed on blue paper. Four pages of publisher's advertisements in volume I; volumes I and III-V bound without lists of plates. Ink shelfmarks and bookplates of the Earl of Dalhousie, Austin Smith, K.K. Wood, and J.R.P. to front pastedowns.

Frontispiece, "Lenore, clasping her spectral bridegroom," to Leonora. A Tale, Translated and altered from the German of Gottfried Augustus Burger.

Frontispiece only. London: by S. Gosnell for William Miller, 1796. Frontispiece only, 8 x 6.5 in. Trimmed to the image so losing the text below, but retaining the imprint at the foot "Blake inv. Perry sc." One or two light spots of foxing, generally very good. Frontispiece only. Blake's illustrations to Leonora were ridiculed in the press upon publication, which might account for it being one of the rarest letterpress books to contain illustrations designed by Blake. Five copies have sold in the last 30 years; one has appeared at auction. The year 1796 saw three translations of Burger's Lenore, one by J. T. Stanley, one by H. J. Pye, the Poet Laureate, and a third by W. R. Spencer, with designs by Lady Diana Beauclerk. Blake was commissioned to create three illustrations for the Stanley translation, including the frontispiece, "Lenore, clasping her spectral bridegroom," which is famous for supposedly having hung as a separate print in C.G. Jung's office. The British Critic for September, 1796, spitefully compared Lady Diana's pictures with those of Blake's: "We are highly impressed by the propriety, decorum and grace which characterizes all the figures of this elegant artist [Lady Beauclerk], even those of a preternatural kind; forming a most striking contrast to the distorted, absurd and impossible monsters exhibited in the frontispiece to Mr. Stanley's last edition [i.e. Blake's design]. Nor can we pass by this opportunity of execrating that detestable taste, founded on the depraved fancy of one man of genius, which substitutes deformity and extravagance for force and expression, and draws men and women without skin, with their joints all dislocated; or imaginary beings which neither can nor ought to exist." The Analytical Review chimed in with comments including "perfectly ludicrous, instead of terrific." Bentley, Blake Books, 440. Easson and Essick, William Blake Book Illustrator, vol. 2, XLVI. Bindman, Complete Graphic Works of Blake, 380-382.

        Poems and Fugitive Pieces

London; Edinburgh: Cadell and Davies; Bell and Bradfute, 1796. Sole edition. Leatherbound. Good +. xii, 172 p. 16 cm. Engraved frontispiece. Full leather with gold trim on boards. Respined, edges repaired, corners rebuilt. Hinges repaired internally. Ink inscription on title page. Some dampstains, becoming darker towards rear. Pages wrinkled. These verses are often attributed to Esther Milnes Day (1753-1792), wife of the poet Thomas Day. However, "Eliza" seems to have been a common signature for women poets of the 18th century and the author may also be the poet Elizabeth Ryves (1750-97) or the poet Eliza Day (ca. 1734-1814). When this scarce volume was first published, a review in British Critic stated: "Judicious friends would have advised the fair writer to omit the complimentary poems to herself, and perhaps the portion which is denominated comic poetry. Eliza most excels in the pathetic, and the lines on the death of a tender mother have very consideralbe merit." Besides the aforementioned poem, anyone who has ever feared for the life of a sick pet will sympathize with "Lines on a favourite Squirrel." Note the notation to Fitzroy Teetotal Library on the title page; the Fitzroy Teetotal Association was founded in London in 1839 and its hall was located at 21 Little Portland Street.
