Newburyport, Ma.: Blunt and March, 1796. - [8],125pp. plus [8]pp. of contemporary manuscript notes on endpapers (see below). Original plain front wrapper, rear wrapper lacking, as is much of the spine paper. Wrapper soiled and edgeworn. Lightly age-toned, an occasional fox mark, some light staining in lower margin of half the text. Many corners folded. In all, a very good copy, in untouched original condition. In a blue half morocco and cloth box, spine gilt. First edition of the primary American navigational guide, the first such book to be compiled and printed in the United States. This copy bears an exceptional early provenance, having belonged to Portland, Maine ship's captain Lemuel Moody. Furlong's work includes detailed sailing directions to many of the east coast harbors and ports, listing courses and distances from Cape Cod and Cape Ann to the mid-Atlantic and all the way south to the Florida Keys. A section at the conclusion gives courses and distances between Passamaquoddy Bay and the Mississippi River. Not only a path-breaking American book, it was also crucially important in facilitating trade and commerce in the early years of the Republic. Publisher Edmund Blunt was the moving force behind the publication of Furlong's work, and he also published Nathaniel Bowditch's NEW AMERICAN PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR in 1802 and the first American edition of John H. Moore's NEW PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR in 1799. Furlong's work takes pride of place as the earliest and rarest of native American navigational guides. There are many who have proposed that Lawrence Furlong did not exist, but was instead a pseudonym for Blunt himself. Lawrence Wroth, however, showed that Captain Furlong (1734-1806) was known as a sailor as early as 1758. Others have asserted that Blunt wrote the majority of the work, and only used Furlong's name for credibility. John Campbell lays all questions to rest in his extensive study of Furlong's and Bowditch's works. Campbell writes that Furlong prepared the manuscript for Blunt in 1795, and in February, 1796 deposited the work with the Newburyport Marine Society for the approbation of respected navigators. "Whatever may have been the origin of the Furlong book, there is no question as to the degree of success with which it met, from the beginning, in its busy maritime world" - Wroth. This copy bears the ownership signature on the front free endpaper of "Lemuel Moody 1796 Portland." Moody (1767-1846) came from a prominent Portland family. As a young boy during the Revolution he carried water to American troops, and later began a career as a ship's captain. In 1799 he and his crew aboard the "Betsey" were captured by French privateers during the "Quasi-War" between the United States and France. Shortly thereafter Moody retired from the profession of sailing, and put his energies into the construction and operation of the Portland Observatory, an important maritime signal tower, which served the merchant community of Portland for decades and which helped identify British ships in the area during the War of 1812. In 1825 Lemuel Moody published a detailed and significant map of Casco Bay, and he was also instrumental in the construction of Portland's Mt. Joy Hospital, and in the Portland Marine Society. Moody has corrected the text in several places, following the instructions in the errata. More significantly, this copy contains eight pages of manuscript notes in Moody's hand giving directions, for example, for anchoring in Cape Cod, for negotiating Sail Rock Passage in Maine, for Sombrero Passage near Anguilla, and for the leeward passage of Antigua. Other manuscript entries give "soundings on Georges Marsh," as well as "Latitudes of Sundries Places observed near to by L.M. corrected." "The first edition of the first book of sailing directions to be compiled and printed in the United States" - JCB. "A work whose influence upon American shipping is inestimable" - Rosenbach. All early editions of THE AMERICAN COAST PILOT are quite rare, and this first edition is s

India, 1796. A SPLENDID EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY PAINTING FROM THE CALCUTTA SCHOOL With inscription 'Phasianus impejanus Indian? 632- Illus/Emperor Pheasant, gen. lynn. sup 14...No. 68' (lower center) Paper size: 25 1/2" x 18 1/8" Pen and Ink with watercolor Provenance: George Annesley, 9th Viscount Valentia (1770-1844); Stuart Cary Welch By the late 18th century, many Mughal-trained painters in India were looking to the emerging British ruling class for patronage. The products of the Calcutta School in India were often albums of flora, fauna, and other exotic sights of India, made to be taken back to Britain. Of the varied subjects, bird studies such as this depiction of a Himalayan Monal, may be deemed a classic type. Paintings of birds, animals, and flowers had been an important genre in Indian art since the time of the Mughal emperor Jahangir (1605-27), and the continuation of such subjects under British patronage was a natural extension of that established tradition, although the results were often quite different stylistically. .         Selling Rabbits

Published by William Ward, London 1796 - A beautiful colour mezzotint by William Ward after his brother James's painting James Ward was one of the most noted artists of his day, his individual style and superior skill distinguished him from his contemporaries, and his outstanding work influenced the development of British art. Considered to be one of the most important animal painters of his generation, Ward also produced portraits, landscapes, genre and history paintings. He began his career as an engraver, studying under his brother William, who later went on to engrave many of his paintings. The images produced from the pairing of William and James Ward epitomize the best of English art, their fine technical skill and inspired artistic imagination combine to create enduring pictures that speak of the taste and beauty of the age. The work of James Ward is worthy of history's praise; it influenced the art of Delacroix and Géricault, and changed the face of British painting. C.R. Grundy James Ward p.72, no.108; Beckett, The Life and Work of James Ward p. 211. Colour printed mezzotint with added hand colour. In good condition with the exception of some expert repairs to plate mark.

A Letter to George Washington, President of the United States: Containing Strictures of his Address of the Seventeenth of September 1796, Notifying His Relinquishment of the Presidential Office. By Jasper Dwight of Vermont.

Philadelphia: Printed for the Author, 1796. Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, 48 pp. Spine wrapped in cloth tape serving as a spine, some soiling and aging, title chipped in lower corner, but not affecting text, a couple of minor chips and folds to other pages, William Duane's name is written on title along with a few other notes; else very good. William Duane (1760-1835) is generally considered the author of this tract. He was born near Lake Champlain, New York, and would become one of the most prominent journalists of his time. After living aboard for a number of years he returned to Philadelphia, and would eventually become the editor of the Aurora. He was a gifted journalist with some very strong views, which sometimes got him into trouble. His politics actually got him indicted under the Sedition Law in 1799. Duane was very much pro Jefferson, but he didn't seem to have much use for other politicians of his day. The present work is strongly anti Washington. According to Sabin this pamphlet is "one of the most violent invectives against Washington, and is far more abusive than the famous letter of Thomas Paine." Sabin 20989. Howes D515. Evans 31315.         Letters Written During A Short Residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark

First Edition of Wollstonecraft\'s Scandinavian LettersWOLLSTONECRAFT, Mary. Letters Written During A Short Residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. London: Printed for J. Johnson, 1796.First edition. Octavo (7 15/16 x 4 7/8 inches; 201 x 124 mm.). [4], 262, [4] pp.Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. Edges dyed brown. Corners rubbed. Front outer hinge, cracked but firm. Head of the tail a bit chipped. Previous owner\'s old ink signature on front free endpaper and lightly on title-page. Some light browning to leaves. Overall a very good copy. This is the original edition of narratives that comprise the first published account in English of a woman travelling on business. The work also had a profound affect on the personal life of its author, and it was well received by its contemporary reading audience. Tomalin reports that \"when Johnson published the Letters, they found an enthusiastic public, not least among young poets.\" The book describes a journey taken through Scandinavia by Wollstonecraft (1759-97) accompanied by her infant daughter Fanny and a nurse. The landscapes, towns, and inns generally made a pleasant impression on the author, as did the people, particularly the humble classes, and she is skilled at paining a picture of the scenes through which she passed. As one who promoted social reforms in England, Wollstonecraft describes the society and customs of the Scandinavians as in general more progressive than in her homeland. She also touches on government and the military, which she finds a somewhat oppressive presence. She was travelling to promote the business interests of the American lover she had met in Paris, Fanny\'s, Filbert Imlay. Wollstonecraft was shattered by the collapse of the relationship, but this book helped her find a new love, for the radical William Godwin declared that \"if ever there was a book calculated to make a man in love with its author, this appears to be the book.\" Wollstonecraft and Godwin married in 1797.Windle A7a.HBS 66291.$1,250

An excellent copy.ìCondillac [1714-1780] entered into intellectual life at just the juncture when...French thought was, with some little affectation, disowning the legacy of Descartes and adopting that of Newton and Locke. In consequence of the junction between physics and the empiricist account of the mind, epistemology and psychology became virtually the same subject in the French Enlightenment. Condillac contributed to the synthesis more decisively than did any other writer. The development of Condillacís thought is recorded in a very coherent way in his main works: Líessai sur líorigine des connaisances humaines (1746); Trait?? des syst??mes (1749); Trait?? des sensations (1754); Trait?? des animaux (1755); La logique (1780); and La langue des calculs, which was left incomplete and published posthumouslyî (D.S.B.).This compact edition of selected works contains Grammaire, Art dí??crire, Dissertation sur líharmonie du style, Art de raisonner, and Art de penser, which had formed part of the Cours díetude. The second volume ends with works not included in the Cours díetude: Logique and Trait?? des animaux, which the anonymous writer of the preface says have been edited with great care, while the orthography adopted in this edition is that of Condillac himself.HBS 66819.$2,500

Outer margin of leaf D2 torn, with a few words affected in the printed side notes on the verso. Good overall. A rare variant printing of the 1795 session laws of North Carolina, this being twenty pages compared with the more common thirty-one-page version. McMurtrie cites each version, but does not define the differences other than page length. "A supplement to Iredell's revision" - McMurtrie. The celebrated "Iredell edition" of the laws of the state of North Carolina was compiled and revised in 1791 by noted jurist James Iredell, who was named a justice of the Supreme Court before he turned forty. Iredell collected in chronological order all the laws then in force in the state, dating back to the early 18th century, and also provided an extensive subject index. This volume provides the laws and amendments to previous laws passed by the state assembly in 1795- 96. Among these are several laws emancipating slaves, including a law entitled: "An Act to emancipate Frank, a person of color." McMURTRIE 224.

        Rustic Sympathy

Published by John Jefferys, London 1796 - Mezzotint. Open lettered proof. A stunning impression of this rare open letter proof of Wheatley's charming picture illustrating the rural life in England. Wheatley was born and trained in London, and in 1769 was one of the first students admitted to the newly founded Royal Academy. Although he initially practiced as a landscape painter, by the mid 1770s he had become a popular painter of small-scale portraits and informal 'conversation-pieces'. From the 1780s onwards, Wheatley turned increasingly to sentimental domestic scenes that were perfectly attuned to the genteel sensibilities of the period. Today he is generally remembered for his Cries of London, which depicted street vendor such as milkmaids, and fruit sellers engaged in their trade on the street sides. This series was a great success, and inspired a myriad of different engravings and copies by celebrated artists such as Johan Zoffany and J. G. Huck. Wheatley's pretty genre paintings of rural and domestic life were a great source of inspiration for contemporary engravers who reproduced his work with industrious vigor. The popularity of these engravings greatly enhanced Wheatley's reputation, and made him one of the most celebrated painters of his day. There is nothing in modern art like the genre paintings and prints of late 18th and early 19th century Great Britain, in which "generic" types illustrate common and uncommon events of, usually, rural life. The Dutch had looked at social life in Holland but in quite a different, frequently critical, way. In the great rural, genre scenes of this period of British art there were no villains depicted, no bizarre events, no crimes or tragedies. The artists sought to evoke warm feelings, a sense of our shared humanity. Since there are not individuals shown in these genre scenes, the body language of the participants needed to be noted with precision, for the whole story is told in the postures, tensions, frowns and furtive glances. Here, a homeless young man, possibly selling a raffle ticket of some kind, stoops submissively at an appropriate distance from two sisters who listen with a mixture of fear and sympathy. Roberts, F. Wheatley, R.A. His Life and Works p.43. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Anatomie du cheval. Ostéologie et myologie . . .Paris, Mme. Huzard; Lyon, the author, 1825. Large folio (51×34 cm). With a small woodcut crowned coat of arms of The Dauphin on the title-page, a lithographed "frontispiece" and 17 numbered anatomical plates lithographed by H. Brunet and printed by Durand & Perrin, many with multiple illustrations on 1 plate. Most anatomical plates with the muscles hand-coloured and subtly shaded in pink. 20th-century dark half brown sheepskin, marbled sides.

Huth, p. 103; Menessier de La Lance II, p. 414; Nissen, ZBI 3380. First edition of a rare anatomical plate book with fine lithographed plates illustrating the proportions, bones and muscles of all parts of the horse. The muscles in the anatomical plates are subtly coloured and shaded in pink. The book was written by the French painter Jean Claude Reverchon (1796-1851), who taught art at the veterinary college in Lyon from 1839 to 1836.Mennessier de la Lance notes that some copies have the plates in black and white, while some have them coloured. Our copy matches the collation given by Mennessier de la Lance and Nissen, with (as usual) no descriptive text for plate 9 (showing only the horse's skeleton, from front and back) and without plate 18, printed by Lefevre without accompanying descriptive text, noted in a few copies by KVK/WorldCat.The edition therefore includes 19 letterpress leaves, all printed on one side only: title-page, avant-propos, explanatory text for the frontispiece and explanatory text for plates 1-8 and 10-17. The book has been treated for mildew, leaving some spotting, marginal soiling and one plate wrinkled. Pictorial horse book in good condition with stunning anatomical plates.

A Select Collection of Views and Ruins in Rome, and Its Vicinity; Executed from Drawings Made Upon the Spot in the Year 1791

London: R. Edwards. W. Lewis, printer. J. Hearne (frontis), 1796-8. First Edition. Half Calf. Fine. Spectacular, and scarce, color plate collection of Roman ruins as they appeared in the late eighteenth century. 62 hand-colored plates in all. Folio sized, large paper edition, measuring 40 by 34 cm, 15.5 by 13 inches. The pictures, both of familiar and less familiar ruins in and around Rome, capture the overgrowth through the cracks and faults of the ruins; the overall effect is to capture the bucolic , poetic beauty of these landmarks. Often a few people are milling about by the ruins to provide a sense of scale. When the ruin is located in a more urban area, one discerns how the living city of Rome was built integrating the ruins, and one has a great snapshot of Rome as it was then. Occasional light finger smudges in the margins. A corner dampstain on rear blank, with very minor bleeding into two or three leaves in front of it. Otherwise, plates and text are clean and might almost be considered pristine.

Important Samuel Adams archive of three items concerning lawlessness in Massachusetts and in the wake of the Constitutional tests required by the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion

Document signed "Samuel Adams" plus two testimonies signed by the secretary John Avery, 7 pages total, 12.625" x 7.75", dated February 29, 1796, in a red half-morocco clamshell box. Samuel Adams served four terms as governor of Massachusetts and as leader of his state's Jeffersonian Republicans, but he strayed from his party by supporting the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. The present document was written one year before his retirement, and his signature shows signs of the tremor that made him, in the last decade of his life, unable to write.Lawlessness had again reared up in Massachusetts when Ephraim Ballard was, while surveying the boundaries between the state's land, the Plymouth claim, and the Waldo patent in Lincoln County [now Maine], attacked and insulted. Testimonies to this incident are provided by Ballard, and by member of the Jones family in a separate affidavit. The local magistrates had so far neglected to redress this injustice. These
