        The Fables …

London, by T. Bensley for J. Edwards and E. & S. Harding,, 1796. ornamented with engravings from the pencil of the Right Hon. Lady Diana Beauclerc. London, by T. Bensley for J. Edwards and E. Harding, 1797; [bound with:] BÃœRGER, Gottfried Augustus. Lenora. Translated from the German … by W. R. Spencer. With designs by the Right Honourable Lady Diana Beauclerc. Two works bound in one volume, folio (365 × 255 mm). Fine contemporary binding of green straight-grain morocco, spine attractively gilt in compartments with interlocking wave tools, gilt lettered in second panel, sides with thick-and-thin rule enclosing a floral scroll border in gilt, gilt inner dentelles, pink endpapers, gilt edges, the fore-edge gauffered. Fables: 9 engraved plates, 15 engraved vignettes; Leonora: engraved frontispiece, 4 engraved plates, 4 engraved vignettes, most signed by Bartolozzi after Beauclerc. Leonora with parallel text, German and English. A little rubbing, some offsetting and faint browning, a most attractive pair. First editions with these Bartolozzi engravings, the only two works illustrated by Lady Diana Beauclerc, here together in handsome contemporary full morocco. Dryden's adaptations of Chaucer and Boccaccio were among the chief reasons for his perhaps surprisingly high place in the esteem of the Romantic poets, especially Coleridge, Keats, Byron and Scott, while Bürger's Leonora inspired a frenzy of competing English versions around this time. Ironically Bürger had found his ballad form not in German literature, but largely through the medium of Percy's Reliques; from Leonora it was reabsorbed into English through the Lyrical Ballads, most directly Wordsworth's The Idiot Boy.

(S.9). Deshalb, so der Autor, sind Zweifel an dem was wir für wahr halten immer angebracht; allerdings darf der Zweifel nie die Grundlagen der Religion erfassen, denn "c'est précisement cette manie de tout soumettre aux calculs de son petit genie qui a produit tous les incredules qui deshonorent aujourd'hui l'Europe entière." (S. 14).

L'Art d'Ecrire (The Art of Writing) reduit a des demonstrations vraies et Sacilar avec des Explications claires, L'Encyclopedie Methodique (Complete set of 16 plates)

(not indicated): Alessandri et Scattaglia, Directeurs. [1796]. First Italian edition [1796]. Sixteen copper plate engravings on fifteen folio sheets. Folded as issued, 31 cm, and measuring approximately 45 cm. (when unfolded). Untrimmed. Paillasson's celebrated calligraphy and handwriting manual was originally published in Diderot's Encyclopedie (1760), and republished by Charles-Joseph Pankoucke in his new Encyclopedie Methodique (1782-1832). Engraved by Pasquali and published by the Venetian engravers Innocente Alessandri and Pietro Scattaglia, this set of plates was issued separately in the first Italian edition (1796) of the section on handwriting from the Encyclopedie Methodique. The detailed calligraphic plates illustrate the geometric proportions of the three scripts (ronde, coulee, and batarde) and writing techniques. Also included are illustrations of the correct writing posture and various writing implements. Very good and better, with moderate soiling mostly to the margins. A very scarce, handsome set of perfectly designed and engraved plates. .

        Marchmont: a Novel

London, by and for Sampson Low,, 1796. 4 volumes, 12mo. Contemporary polished half calf, blue marbled boards, spines simply gilt. Without half-titles, but with terminal advert leaf in vol. IV. Booklabel of Thomas Hammond Foxcroft [of Halsteads, Yorkshire], with his ownership inscription on titles. Light rubbing, lower joint of vol. III just splitting at head, still an excellent copy. First edition of one of Mrs Smith's less common and less well-known novels, published at the height of her popularity, and full of the gothic and picaresque incident that was the hallmark of her success, "much movement," as W. Scott said of her novels that she "preserves in her landscapes the truth and precision of a painter" (Dorset, 64), and Barbauld credits Smith with pioneering sustained natural description in novels.

        Carey's General Atlas

Published by Mathew Carey, Philadelphia 1796 - Contemporary brown sheep-backed marbled paper-covered boards, the whole covered with a contemporary sail cloth chemise. Housed in a black chemise and black morocco backed folding box. Provenance: Elizabeth White Carlton (1799-1818, early book label) An unsophisticated copy of this important American atlas, including the first appearance of the very rare, large-scale map of the United States by Samuel Lewis. "Following the Revolution, there was considerable activity in the United States by American mapmakers and publishers. One of them, Mathew Carey, was a pioneer in producing cartographic works . In 1795 Carey published The General Atlas for Carey's Edition of Guthrie's Geography Improved . William Guthrie's popular textbook was originally issued in London in 1770 . The sixteen maps of American states included . were reprinted with five others in his American Atlas , which was also published in 1795 . The engravers of the maps in both atlases were Barker, Scott, James Thackara, and John Vallance, all of Philadelphia, Samuel Hill of Boston, Amos Doolittle of New Haven, and Benjamin Tanner of New York" (Ristow). Carey's 1796 General Atlas which followed, i.e. the present atlas, contained the same maps as the 1795 Guthrie Atlas, but without mention of Guthrie on the title and with the significant addition of Samuel Lewis's large map of the United States which had not been completed in time for the Guthrie Atlas. The important and highly detailed map, titled "A Map of the United States: compiled chiefly from the State Maps, and other Authentic Information," depicts the young nation as far west as the far side of the Mississippi River, with a large Louisiana Terrritory identified as "Spanish Territory"; an inset shows Florida and the Gulf coast. That map is nearly always lacking from the atlas, although is present in this copy. An idea of its rarity may be gained from the fact that the Siebert copy of this atlas was missing this map, as was one of the only two other copies to sell at auction in the past thirty one years. The last example which did include this map was sold by Sotheby's in 1976 (lot 38, sale 24 February 1976). Wheat and Brun identify two states of the map, this copy an example of the second state with the addition of Carey's tag line above the inset. Evans 30162; Phillips Atlases 683; Sabin 10858. Total leaves: 232. = 464 pages. Spine says [volume] II but Vinograd does not list the other volumes as having been printed that year. There was a set printed that same year but the title is different: Minhag Ashkenaz. The missing Volume I may have been a High Holidays volume. Each section has its own separate title page. Shminit Atzeret leaves 64-66 and Passover leaves 28-30 each have small engravings of the 12 zodiac which differ from the regular ones used in Ashkenazic mahzorim. Front paste down endpaper has inscription in pen: Mr. Asher Goldsmid Taf kuf ayin bet [=1812] GOLDSMID: A family of English financiers, who trace descent from a certain Uri ha-Levi of Emden. The following were some of the prominent members of the family: Aaron F. Goldsmid: London merchant and founder of the Goldsmid family of England; born at Amsterdam; died June 3, 1782. He was the son of Benedict Goldsmid, a Hamburg merchant. In 1765 he left Holland with his family to settle in London, where he founded the firm of Aaron Goldsmid & Son, subsequently Goldsmid & Eliason. The firm of Aaron Goldsmid & Son experienced serious reverses through the failure of Clifford & Sayer, one of the principal houses in Holland. Hence only George, the eldest son, entered into partnership with his father. The other sons founded new businesses for themselves in which they amassed large fortunes. Goldsmid left four sons and four daughters. The second son, ASHER, was one of the founders of the firm Mocatta & Goldsmid, bullion-brokers to the Bank of England. Benjamin and Abraham were famous as financiers and philanthropists. Bibliography: Levy Alexander, Memoirs of Benjamin Goldsmid of Roehampton, 1808; James Picciotto, Sketches of Anglo-Jewish History.         Correspondance amoureuse

Rousel d'Epinal, Paris 1796 - Fabre d¿Eglantine Philippe François Nazaire (21 juillet 1750 ¿1 7 Germinal an II) ~ Correspondance amoureuse ~A Paris, Rousel d'Epinal, 1796. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Poems by Goldsmith and Parnell; together with The Chase. A Poem. By William Somerville.

London W. Bulmer 1795; 1796 - Quarto. Two books bound together in one volume: xx, 76; xv, vii, 126pp. First editions thus. With a fore-edge painting by the "double-line" painter depicting the pastoral village of Lissoy where Oliver Goldsmith spent his youth, standing in for the pseudonymous town of Auburn in Goldsmith's poem, "The Deserted Village." The artist has written the title, "Lissoy ('Auburn' of 'The Deserted Village')," on the flyleaf in pen. The first book in the volume, Poems by Goldsmith and Parnell, is illustrated with four full-page, wood-engraved plates, by Thomas Bewick and one by John Bewick, and eight wood-engraved vignettes drawn by Robert Johnson or John Bewick, and engraved by Thomas Bewick. The second book, The Chase by William Somerville, has thirteen wood-engraved vignettes, including title pages, engraved by Thomas Bewick after designs by John Bewick. The Bewick brothers were the leaders of the development of the art of wood engraving at the end of the eighteenth century. In particular, Thomas Bewick extended the range of the art by creating "a new conception of the black and white picture." These books were splendidly printed by Bulmer at his Shakespeare Printing Office. In The Bewick Collector, Thomas Hugo describes Poems by Goldsmith and Parnell as "A magnificent result of the efforts of the wood engraver, type-founder, papermaker, and printer" and writes that The Chase "contains the best specimens of John Bewick's abilities as a designer." Bound in contemporary red straight-grain morocco with double-fillet border and a wide double-fillet frame with semi-circle insertions. This special presentation of the two books was done for Baronet Sir John James Smith, whose gilt armorial coat-of-arms is stamped in the center of the covers. With marbled endpapers and gilt dentelles to the inside edges of the covers. Housed in a matching chemise and slipcase. Binding shows some light rubbing and wear, slight bump to bottom edge of front cover, else a fine copy with a bright fore-edge painting. The bookplate of Sir John James Smith has been covered over by the armorial bookplate of Frederick S. Deck. (Tattersfield JB50 & JB8; Weber, pp. 95-96; Hugo 78 & 94; Ray, England, 50, [Goldsmith only]). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Lives of Dr John Donne; Sir Henry Wotton; Mr Richard Hooker; Mr George Herbert; and Dr Robert Sanderson

York - J. Robson et al. 1796 - A first edition of this collection of biographies by Isaac Walton. Illustrated throughout with numerous plates. Including biographies of Dr John Donne, Sir Henry Wotton, Mr Richard Hooker, Mr George Herbert, and Dr Robert Sanderson. It was probably as an angler that Walton made the acquaintance of Sir Henry Wotton. Sir Henry Wotton dying in 1639, Walton undertook his life also; it was finished in 1642 and published in 1651. His life of Hooker was published in 1662, that of George Herbert in 1670 and that of Bishop Robert Sanderson in 1678. All these subjects were endeared to the biographer by a certain gentleness of disposition and cheerful piety; three of them at leastDonne, Wotton and Herbertwere anglers. Their lives were evidently written with loving pains, in the same leisurely fashion as his Angler, and like it are of value less as exact knowledge than as harmonious and complete pictures of character. An edition of Walton's Lives, by G Sampson, appeared in 1903. Condition: Rebound in half-morocco. Externally, very smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with just some scattered light spotting and marginal tidemarks to the frontispiece. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The fore & lower page edges are untrimmed, keeping the orginal wide margins. The front outer hinge is slightly tender, and the outer hinges show some wear to the leather surface, rubbing to cover corners. A few, small, scattered brown spots are present, light age-related tanning to the title-page, but generally, a clean and very well-prerserved copy of Scott's first book.       Alessandri et Scattaglia, Directeurs, (not indicated) 1796 - First Italian edition [1796]. Sixteen copper plate engravings on fifteen folio sheets. Folded as issued, 31 cm, and measuring approximately 45 cm. (when unfolded). Untrimmed. Also included are illustrations of the correct writing posture and various writing implements. Very good and better, with moderate soiling mostly to the margins. A very scarce, handsome set of perfectly designed and engraved plates.

[Np. ] 1796 - [4]pp. One bifolium sheet, each page measuring 9 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches. Old fold lines, some tanning and tearing to one interior fold. Else clean. Very good. John Trumbull's undated account of the British detention of the ship Holland of Philadelphia, captained by Joseph Dawson. Trumbull, during a period when he engaged in commercial trading in Europe, was travelling with his cargo of brandy from Rochefort, France to Gothenburg, Sweden aboard the Holland when she was stopped and boarded by the British fourteen-gun brig-sloop Suffisante, under the command of Captain Nicholas Tomlinson. Captain Tomlinson demanded to see the Holland's papers and then went about detaining most of the ship's crew aboard his own vessel. Trumbull, highly outraged at the delay of his cargo and the imposition upon his fellow countrymen, wrote the following note, included in the memorandum, to Captain Tomlinson: "To Captain Tomlinson of the Armed Brig the Suffisante in the Service of his Britannic Majesty. Colonel Trumbull, late Secretary to Mr. Jay, who negotiated the present Treaty between Great Britain and America, and Owner of the Cargo of the Ship Holland, presents his Compliments to Captn Tomlinson; has the Pleasure to send him a Copy of the Treaty abovenamed; and begs Captain Tomlinson to Reflect whether consitantly [sic] with the Articles which Mr. T has marked, it is Justifiable to divert the Holland from her Course, the ship being American built, the Property of Mr. Johnson, the American Consul in London, and the Cargo the property of Col. Trumbull, who also is a well-known American. If Captn. Tomlinson persists in taking the ship out out of her Course, Col. Trumbull particularly protests against his removing either Capt. Dawson or any of the People from on board. But, Captain Tomlinson should be very secure that He is Justified by his Instructions on this occasion, as either He or his Instructors must answer for the consequences of an Act against which Colonel Trumbull hereby formally protests, as a direct violation of the Treaty, & good Harmony which subsist between the United States of America and Great Britain." Shortly thereafter, Captain Dawson and his crew were returned to the Holland and Captain Tomlinson even came aboard and "behaved very civilly, drank a glass of claret with us, and returned on board his Brig." There is no indication of the intended audience for this document. It has the appearance of a draft, as there are several bits crossed out or amended. It is possible that this episode was recorded for inclusion in Trumbull's autobiography, though it does not appear in that volume, or for possible diplomatic use later. Hailed as the official painter of the Revolution, Trumbull studied painting and art in England and France. The youngest son of the governor of Connecticut, the elder John Trumbull very much wanted his son to go into law. Trumbull did study the law, but gladly joined the fight against the British when the Revolution broke out. He eventually served as Washington's second aide-de- campe, having been brought to the General's attention through some very accurate drawings he had made of British gun emplacements. He rose to the rank of colonel as a deputy adjutant- general, but resigned the commission he finally received because it was dated three months late, a slight his honor could not tolerate. He refused to return to the law, finding it quite distasteful, and chose instead to pursue his true passion, art, against his family's wishes. Though he was never particularly wealthy in this pursuit, he did achieve a certain amount of success in his own lifetime. Among his most famous works are those commissioned in 1817 by Congress to adorn the Capitol building: "The Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga," "The Surrender of General Cornwallis at Yorktown," "The Declaration of Independence," and "The Resignation of General Washington."         Op. 4]. Grand Quintetto per due Violini, due Viole, e Violoncello. [Set of parts]

[Artaria e] Comp. [PN] 627 [after 1796], Vienne - First Edition, later issue. Kinsky-Halm p. 12 (first issue). Weinhold/Dorfmüller p. 256. Hirsch IV, 241. For other issues see Hoboken 2, 27-30. In the first issue the opus number is printed as "IV" and the price "f2." In the present issue "4" appears in manuscript and there is no printed price. In addition, the number "11-1/2B" is printed at the foot of the first page of music in the "Violino Primo" part, most probably a printer's notation referring to the number of sheets required to print the part. Opus 4 is an original work, drawing on material from Beethoven's then-unpublished Octet for Winds (op. 103), ". with revisions sufficient to warrant calling it a new composition." Solomon: Beethoven, p. 102. "At some time before February 1791, probably when he was composing the C major Piano Sonata, Op. 2, no. 3, with its closely related opening theme, Beethoven re-cast the Octet (op. 103) as a String Quintet, Op. 4, and comparison of the two versions shows considerable light on his development as an instrumental composer during those four important formative years. The Quintet is by no means an arrangement of the Octet; unlike Mozart's parallel recasting of his Octet for the same combination of instruments (K.388) as a String Quintet (K.406), it is in many respects a new work. Everything has become more plastic; stiff formulae are softened; the texture is lightened in weight but enriched by polyphony and the devices of 'obbligato accompaniment'. The harmony, too, has become richer. Structurally everything is worked out in the Quintet on lines that are at the same time broader and subtler: the exposition of the first movement of the Quintet is 88 bars long as compared with the 69 of the Octet, the development 77 as compared with 56. The sixteen-bar periods that open minuet and trio of the Octet are expanded to 22 and 24 bars respectively in the Quintet, and the structure becomes much clearer, less fussy. All in all, it is hardly an exaggeration to say that the difference between Octet and Quintet represents the whole difference between the "al fresco," serenade music that was just going out of fashion and the new finely wrought quartet style of late Haydn with its 'openwork texture,' its so called 'durchbrochene Arbeit' ". Gerald Abraham in The New Oxford History of Music Vol. VIII: The Age of Beethoven 1790-1830, p. 260. The autograph of the work is untraced. Folio. Sewn. [1] (title), 2-11, [i] (blank); 8, [ii] (blank); 7, [i] (blank); 7, [i] (blank), 7, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Watermark incorporating a star within a shield.
