The Compact Edition of Condillacís WorksCONDILLAC, [Etienne Bonnot de]. Oeuvres choisies. Tome premier. Grammaire. Art dí??crire. Dissertation sur líharmonie du style. [Tome second. Art de raisonner. Art de penser. Logique, ou premiers d??velopemens de líart de penser. Trait?? des animaux]. Paris: 1796.Two quarto volumes. [6], 539, [1, blank]; [4], 559, [1, blank] pp. Nine folding engraved plates of diagrams.Contemporary mottled calf. Spines decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments with brown and black morocco gilt lettering labels, board edges decoratively tooled in gilt, edges stained red, marbled endpapers. Small hole (paper flaw) in 492 (pp. 387/388) in Volume I, just touching a few letters, a few minor marginal paper flaws, not affecting text. Occasional minor browning and spotting in Volume II. Early ink annotations on front flyleaf of Volume I. An excellent copy.ìCondillac [1714-1780] entered into intellectual life at just the juncture when...French thought was, with some little affectation, disowning the legacy of Descartes and adopting that of Newton and Locke. In consequence of the junction between physics and the empiricist account of the mind, epistemology and psychology became virtually the same subject in the French Enlightenment. Condillac contributed to the synthesis more decisively than did any other writer. The development of Condillacís thought is recorded in a very coherent way in his main works: Líessai sur líorigine des connaisances humaines (1746); Trait?? des syst??mes (1749); Trait?? des sensations (1754); Trait?? des animaux (1755); La logique (1780); and La langue des calculs, which was left incomplete and published posthumouslyî (D.S.B.).This compact edition of selected works contains Grammaire, Art dí??crire, Dissertation sur líharmonie du style, Art de raisonner, and Art de penser, which had formed part of the Cours díetude. The second volume ends with works not included in the Cours díetude: Logique and Trait?? des animaux, which the anonymous writer of the preface says have been edited with great care, while the orthography adopted in this edition is that of Condillac himself.HBS 66819.$2,500

Outer margin of leaf D2 torn, with a few words affected in the printed side notes on the verso. Good overall. A rare variant printing of the 1795 session laws of North Carolina, this being twenty pages compared with the more common thirty-one-page version. McMurtrie cites each version, but does not define the differences other than page length. "A supplement to Iredell's revision" - McMurtrie. The celebrated "Iredell edition" of the laws of the state of North Carolina was compiled and revised in 1791 by noted jurist James Iredell, who was named a justice of the Supreme Court before he turned forty. Iredell collected in chronological order all the laws then in force in the state, dating back to the early 18th century, and also provided an extensive subject index. This volume provides the laws and amendments to previous laws passed by the state assembly in 1795- 96. Among these are several laws emancipating slaves, including a law entitled: "An Act to emancipate Frank, a person of color." McMURTRIE 224.

        Rustic Sympathy

Published by John Jefferys, London 1796 - Mezzotint. Open lettered proof. A stunning impression of this rare open letter proof of Wheatley's charming picture illustrating the rural life in England. Wheatley was born and trained in London, and in 1769 was one of the first students admitted to the newly founded Royal Academy. Although he initially practiced as a landscape painter, by the mid 1770s he had become a popular painter of small-scale portraits and informal 'conversation-pieces'. From the 1780s onwards, Wheatley turned increasingly to sentimental domestic scenes that were perfectly attuned to the genteel sensibilities of the period. Today he is generally remembered for his Cries of London, which depicted street vendor such as milkmaids, and fruit sellers engaged in their trade on the street sides. This series was a great success, and inspired a myriad of different engravings and copies by celebrated artists such as Johan Zoffany and J. G. Huck. Wheatley's pretty genre paintings of rural and domestic life were a great source of inspiration for contemporary engravers who reproduced his work with industrious vigor. The popularity of these engravings greatly enhanced Wheatley's reputation, and made him one of the most celebrated painters of his day. There is nothing in modern art like the genre paintings and prints of late 18th and early 19th century Great Britain, in which "generic" types illustrate common and uncommon events of, usually, rural life. The Dutch had looked at social life in Holland but in quite a different, frequently critical, way. In the great rural, genre scenes of this period of British art there were no villains depicted, no bizarre events, no crimes or tragedies. The artists sought to evoke warm feelings, a sense of our shared humanity. Since there are not individuals shown in these genre scenes, the body language of the participants needed to be noted with precision, for the whole story is told in the postures, tensions, frowns and furtive glances. Here, a homeless young man, possibly selling a raffle ticket of some kind, stoops submissively at an appropriate distance from two sisters who listen with a mixture of fear and sympathy. Roberts, F. Wheatley, R.A. His Life and Works p.43. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Anatomie du cheval. Ostéologie et myologie . . .Paris, Mme. Huzard; Lyon, the author, 1825. Large folio (51×34 cm). With a small woodcut crowned coat of arms of The Dauphin on the title-page, a lithographed "frontispiece" and 17 numbered anatomical plates lithographed by H. Brunet and printed by Durand & Perrin, many with multiple illustrations on 1 plate. Most anatomical plates with the muscles hand-coloured and subtly shaded in pink. 20th-century dark half brown sheepskin, marbled sides.

Huth, p. 103; Menessier de La Lance II, p. 414; Nissen, ZBI 3380. First edition of a rare anatomical plate book with fine lithographed plates illustrating the proportions, bones and muscles of all parts of the horse. The muscles in the anatomical plates are subtly coloured and shaded in pink. The book was written by the French painter Jean Claude Reverchon (1796-1851), who taught art at the veterinary college in Lyon from 1839 to 1836.Mennessier de la Lance notes that some copies have the plates in black and white, while some have them coloured. Our copy matches the collation given by Mennessier de la Lance and Nissen, with (as usual) no descriptive text for plate 9 (showing only the horse's skeleton, from front and back) and without plate 18, printed by Lefevre without accompanying descriptive text, noted in a few copies by KVK/WorldCat.The edition therefore includes 19 letterpress leaves, all printed on one side only: title-page, avant-propos, explanatory text for the frontispiece and explanatory text for plates 1-8 and 10-17. The book has been treated for mildew, leaving some spotting, marginal soiling and one plate wrinkled. Pictorial horse book in good condition with stunning anatomical plates.

A Select Collection of Views and Ruins in Rome, and Its Vicinity; Executed from Drawings Made Upon the Spot in the Year 1791

London: R. Edwards. W. Lewis, printer. J. Hearne (frontis), 1796-8. First Edition. Half Calf. Fine. Spectacular, and scarce, color plate collection of Roman ruins as they appeared in the late eighteenth century. 62 hand-colored plates in all. Folio sized, large paper edition, measuring 40 by 34 cm, 15.5 by 13 inches. The pictures, both of familiar and less familiar ruins in and around Rome, capture the overgrowth through the cracks and faults of the ruins; the overall effect is to capture the bucolic , poetic beauty of these landmarks. Often a few people are milling about by the ruins to provide a sense of scale. When the ruin is located in a more urban area, one discerns how the living city of Rome was built integrating the ruins, and one has a great snapshot of Rome as it was then. Occasional light finger smudges in the margins. A corner dampstain on rear blank, with very minor bleeding into two or three leaves in front of it. Otherwise, plates and text are clean and might almost be considered pristine.

Important Samuel Adams archive of three items concerning lawlessness in Massachusetts and in the wake of the Constitutional tests required by the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion

Document signed "Samuel Adams" plus two testimonies signed by the secretary John Avery, 7 pages total, 12.625" x 7.75", dated February 29, 1796, in a red half-morocco clamshell box. Samuel Adams served four terms as governor of Massachusetts and as leader of his state's Jeffersonian Republicans, but he strayed from his party by supporting the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794. The present document was written one year before his retirement, and his signature shows signs of the tremor that made him, in the last decade of his life, unable to write.Lawlessness had again reared up in Massachusetts when Ephraim Ballard was, while surveying the boundaries between the state's land, the Plymouth claim, and the Waldo patent in Lincoln County [now Maine], attacked and insulted. Testimonies to this incident are provided by Ballard, and by member of the Jones family in a separate affidavit. The local magistrates had so far neglected to redress this injustice. These

Essais en vers et en prose

Paris: Didot l'aîné, 1796 - First edition, containing the first authorized appearance in book form of "La Marseillaise." The famous poem by Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836) appears at pp. 57-59 as "Le Chant des Combats, vulgairement L'Hyme des Marseillois. Aux Mânes de Sylvain Bailly. Premier Maire de Paris." La Marseillaise, now the French national anthem, and recognized worldwide as the quintessential call to revolution, "was originally written by a royalist officer as a patriotic song in support of the then French royal government which had declared war on April 20, 1792, against the Emperor Francis of Austria and King William II of Prussia. Subsequently, volunteers from Marseilles heard the song and joined in the storming in the Tuileries on Aug. 10, 1792. The song was thereafter quickly reprinted a great many times, usually under the title Marches des Marseillais or variant thereof" (Fuld). "La Marseillaise est un hymne d'éveil et de résistance qui a valu pour les résistances qui ont suivi, qui vaut pour celles que nécessite notre temps, et qui vaudra pour les résistances futures." - Edgar Morin Fuld notes that the earliest printings of the famous anthem appeared either in broadside form or in periodicals, and all are extremely rare; this printing, its first appearance in a book, was officially authorized by the author and is highly desirable. The copy, in a Simier binding, is particularly so: tipped-in is an Autograph Note signed by Rouget de Lisle, authorizing the payment of a debt "au citoyen de Buehr" (?), dated "le cinq thermidor, l'an 6" (i.e., July 24, 1797) First edition. 8vo. [iv], 157, [1] + 5 pp engraved music. Full crimson morocco, raised bands, gilt spine, marbled endpapers, gilt turn-ins, a.e.g., by Simier. Upper joint a little rubbed, else fine. Shakespeare. Second Part of King Henry the Sixth. Act I, Scene IV. Mother Jourdain, Hume, Southwell, Bolingbroke & Eleanor

John & Josiah Boydell, London 1796 - A very fine copy of one of the greatest images from Boydell's magnum opus, illustrating the works of England's greatest dramatist. "This is Shakespeare on a grand scale, the Shakespeare of titanic emotion, of compelling gesture and vivid gaze. the greatest of the engravings. are by any standard powerful works with an inescapable emotional force behind them. They speak directly to us." (A.E.Santaniello. The Boydell Shakespeare Prints New York, 1979). Opie, a Cornish-born painter of great natural talent, was first brought to wide public attention by William Walcot ('Peter Pindar') and worked for a while in partnership with him. However, by the time the original for the present work was painted he was established in his own right and 'he was largely employed in painting pictures for the important illustrated works of the day. For Boydell's Shakespeare (1786-9) he painted Arthur supplicating Hubert, Juliet on her Bed surrounded by the Capulets, Antigonus sworn to destroy Perdita' (DNB), and this famous scene from Henry the Sixth, part Two, "The Conjuration". In 1786, the printseller John Boydell (1719-1804) 'embarked upon the most important enterprise of his life, viz. the publication, by subscription, of a series of prints illustrative of [the works of] Shakespeare, after pictures painted expressly for the work by English artists. For this purpose he gave commissions to all the most celebrated painters of this country for pictures, and built a gallery in Pall Mall for their exhibition. The execution of this project extended over several years. In 1789 the Shakespeare Gallery contained thirty-four pictures, in 1791 sixty-five, in 1802 one hundred and sixty-two, of which eighty-four were of large size. The total number of works executed was 170, three of which were pieces of sculpture, and the artists employed were thirty-three painters and two sculptors, Thomas Banks and the Hon. Mrs. Damer. It appears from the preface to the catalogue of 1789, and from other recorded statements of Boydell, that he wished to do for English painting what he had done for English engraving, to make it respected by foreigners.' ( DNB ). Cf. Santaniello, The Boydell Shakespeare Prints ; Dictionary of National Biography. Stipple engraving, by C.G. Playter, finished by R. Thew.

The Gamester... The Story of Poor Tricket the Gamester

London and Bath: J. Marshall, R. White, S. Hazard, 1796. Octavo chapbook, 16 pp., with a woodcut on the title; a very good copy stitched as issued. The cautionary tale. A rare transportation chapbook in particularly good condition. This moral tale shows how a life of gambling and dissipation ends in transportation: 'The fear of death at first made even Botany Bay appear a deliverance, but when he was to depart thither, bitter indeed, was the affliction of his faithful wife…' One of the so-called "Cheap Repository" of moral tales, a series begun by Hannah More in March 1795. More contributed some fifty tales in all, but many others were written by friends and colleagues from her circle. Although some titles had overtly political overtones, most were simpler morality tales, encouraging sobriety and piety. As Susan Pedersen has pointed out, the tales were issued to combat the more lurid fare traditionally sold by hawkers (see, for example, catalogue no. XXXX). In The Gamester, 'Gambling leads to poverty, family tragedy, crime and death, and the author of "The story of Poor Tricket, The Gamester" moralizes, "Let every reader lay to heart the dreadful consequences of gambling; for, by first bringing a man to want, it will harden his heart even against his most beloved wife and children…' (Susan Pedersen, 'Hannah More Meets Simple Simon: Tracts, Chapbooks, and Popular Culture in Late Eighteenth-Century England,' The Journal of British Studies, January, 1986). This particular tale is unusual in having the protagonist transported: most ne'er-do-wells in the Moral Repository universe end in prison or on the gallows, although they are occasionally struck down by lightning. Eighteenth-century accounts of transportation to Botany Bay printed in such an ephemeral form are particularly elusive.

The Gamester... The Story of Poor Tricket the Gamester

London and Bath: J. Marshall, 1796. Octavo chapbook, 16 pp., with a woodcut on the title; a very good copy, disbound. A cautionary tale. A very rare transportation chapbook in particularly good condition. Eighteenth-century accounts of transportation to Botany Bay printed in such an ephemeral form are particularly elusive. Chapbooks were printed on cheap paper and sold at less than a penny each by chapmen or peddlers. Often illustrated with a crude woodcut on the title-page, they frequently had a moralising tone, as with this tale of a life of gaming and crime and subsequent transportation to Botany Bay. This work was issued by the Cheap Repository of Moral and Religious Tracts, which began publication in March 1795. Initiated by the zeal of Hannah More and Horace Walpole, the works were designed to be distributed among the poor and worthy. More's idea in publishing the works was, in large part, to combat the explosion in popular chapbooks of a less wholesome tone. Although all works in the series are now more famous for their reputedly anti-Jacobin stance, taken together they are evidently more concerned with more traditional vices like gambling and drinking (Susan Pedersen, "Hannah More meets Simple Simon", Journal of British Studies, 1986). It was later collected in the Cheap Repository Shorter Tracts of 1798. No author has ever been ascribed.

A Voyage to New South Wales ; with a Description of the Country; The Manners, Customs, Religion, &c. of the Natives, in the Vicinity of Botany Bay. By George Barrington, now Superintendent of the Convicts at Paramatta [sic]

Philadelphia: Printed by Thomas Dobson, 1796. Duodecimo, with 2-pp. publisher's advertisements; the text embrowned and some scattered staining but a very good unsophisticated copy, with the half-title, in original American mottled sheep, unlettered spine ruled in gilt; front hinge starting, head of spine restored. The rare American Barrington. Only the second work on Australia to be published in America. This first American edition of Barrington's Voyage, in appealing and characteristic contemporary condition, is very rare; two copies are recorded at the State Library of New South Wales (Mitchell and Dixson), while the National Library has Ferguson's copy and a fourth is to be found at Monash University. It is ironic that an essentially fraudulent work should prove to be a fundamental source for eighteenth-century American knowledge of the new settlement at Port Jackson. Eighteenth-century American voyage publications are generally acknowledged as rare: this is particularly interesting as one of only two accounts of New South Wales printed in the United States by 1800. The Philadelphia Barrington was preceded only by the exceptionally rare 1789 New York edition of Tench, of which only two copies are known, at the Mitchell and the National Library.

Man As He Is: A Novel in Four Volumes

London: Printed for William Lane, 1796. 2nd Edition. Cloth Bound. Ex-Library/No Jacket. 4 vols. vi, 252, 210, 242, 240 p. 16 cm. Second edition. Rebound in navy cloth. Discreet library markings from Harvard University Library. Harvard crest on spine. Donation bookplate stamped released, with original spine labels. Vol. 2: small hole p. 149, tear in edge of p. 155, 169. Minor spots. Bage's novels may not interest strongly by their plot, but there is a distinct originality about them. They were chiefly intended to inculcate certain political and philosophical opinions. He was deeply impressed by the French revolution, and the effects of the new principles are clearly traceable in his works. Considered altogether apart from their moral and social bearings, the novels of Bage display an unquestionable power in drawing and developing character, while their style is always entertaining and frequently incisive. This title is considered his best work.

        Catalogus Bibliothecae Historico-Naturalis Josephi Banks

London: W. Bulmer, 1796-, 1800. Five volumes bound in four, octavo, extra-illustrated with two portraits of Banks, manuscript dedication to Baron Cobres on front endpaper of volume IV; a good set in old half calf with marbled boards, volume II not quite matching but with similarly marbled boards, sympathetically rebacked. Privately issued catalogue of Banks' library. Rare: the complete private library catalogue of Sir Joseph Banks, with a fascinating provenance. Only 250 copies were printed of this wonderful work, and sets are not often seen for sale, while complete sets are distinctly rare since the fifth volume is more often absent. The few examples that have come onto the market seem almost without exception to have had interesting associations, tending to confirm the supposition that the book was never really published for conventional public sale, being intended rather for presentation among Banks' wide and influential coterie. This set is no exception, with a manuscript note in a secretarial hand to the front endpaper of volume IV noting "Baron Cobres from Sir Joseph Banks". This is particularly appealing, as the natural history collection of the Baron Joseph Paul von Cobres was one of the most significant of its time. Indeed, the annotated catalogue of his collection, the Deliciae Cobresianae of 1782, is considered to be one of the three great private collection catalogues of the eighteenth century, together with the Bibliotheca Riviniana (1727) of the German botanist August Quirinus Rivinus, and this catalogue of Banks' library. It comes as no surprise to find that the Deliciae Cobresianae is listed in Banks' library. Just as intriguingly, a more recent note to the endpaper of the first volume also explains this set's unusual provenance, commenting that four of the volumes present here (I, III, IV, & V) were purchased from a descendant of James Sowerby; volume II, later added, bears the ownership inscription of the chemist W.T. Brande and the stamp of the Glasgow Philosophical Society. Sowerby was an influential natural history artist, perhaps best known to an Australian audience for his collaboration with James Edward Smith on A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland of 1793, the first separately published book on Australian botany. Sowerby also became heavily involved with Sir Joseph Banks. Banks' superb library was ultimately bequeathed to the British Museum. Many voyage writers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Dalrymple and Burney among them, acknowledged the debt that they owed to Banks' library and to his generosity in making his books and manuscripts available to them. The catalogue was compiled by Jonas Dryander, the Swedish botanist who succeeded Solander as Banks' librarian in 1782 and later became librarian to the Royal Society and a founder fellow and first librarian of the Linnean Society. Taylor notes that it approaches a 'virtually complete bibliography of eighteenth-century writings on natural history'. The first volume (1798) describes Banks' general books, including voyages and travels, the second (1796) his zoological books, the third (1797) his botanical books, and the fourth (1799) those relating to mineralogy. The fifth volume (1800), which is lacking in three of the nine sets located by Taylor, comprises a supplement and an author index.

Viaggi dalla China alla costa Nord-Ovest d'America fatti negli anni 1788 e 1789

Florence: Giovacchino Pagani, 1796. Four volumes octavo, with 18 plates, maps and charts, some of them folding; original Italian half blue-green roan and glazed boards, flat spines banded and lettered in gilt; a very attractive set. Italian version. First Italian version, one of two editions published in the same year (the other was published in Naples). This attractive copy, once in the library of the Pacific Union Club in San Francisco, was sold by Warren Howell in the 1970s. The charming engravings here, redone for this edition by a Florentine artist, include two of Hawaiian subjects and the text describes two important, early visits to the islands in 1787 and 1788. 'This is one of the early and fundamental books on the Northwest coast of America in general and on Alaska in particular. In addition to his voyages from China to America in 1788 and 1789, which form the principal part of this work, Captain Meares describes his earlier voyage to the Northwest coast from Bengal, which took place in 1786 and 1787… This work, profusely illustrated and with many valuable historical documents appended to the main narrative, is of great importance in the study of early trading in furs originating on the Northwest coast and of a serious conflict between the English and the Spaniards in this connection…' (Lada-Mocarski, of the English edition). 'John Meares was sent out in 1796 from Calcutta, by a group of merchants, to enter into the fur trade of the Northwest coast of America. Establishing himself at Nootka Sound and flying the British flag, he built the first vessel to be launched in northern waters, made important discoveries, and explored the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The discoveries by Meares were part of the basis for the claim of Great Britain to Oregon. Competition with the Spanish almost caused war between the two countries and the struggle became known as the Nootka controversy. The Spanish seizure of his ships led to the convention by which the Spanish claims to any northern territory were finally disallowed. This important narrative gives a very full account of the Indian nations of Northwest America, describing their villages, languages, manners and customs. It also contains a separate account of the voyage of the Iphigenia, commanded by Captain William Douglas, which visited the Sandwich Islands and Nootka Sound…' (Hill).
