Essais en vers et en prose

Paris: Didot l'aîné, 1796. First edition. [iv], 157, [1] + 5 pp engraved music. 1 vols. 8vo. Full crimson morocco, raised bands, gilt spine, marbled endpapers, gilt turn-ins, a.e.g., by Simier. Upper joint a little rubbed, else fine. First edition. [iv], 157, [1] + 5 pp engraved music. 1 vols. 8vo. "Aux armes, citoyens" - the first Printing of 'La Marseillaise' in a Book. First edition, containing the first authorized appearance in book form of "La Marseillaise." The famous poem by Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836) appears at pp. 57-59 as "Le Chant des Combats, vulgairement L'Hyme des Marseillois. Aux Mânes de Sylvain Bailly. Premier Maire de Paris." La Marseillaise, now the French national anthem, and recognized worldwide as the quintessential call to revolution, "was originally written by a royalist officer as a patriotic song in support of the then French royal government which had declared war on April 20, 1792, against the Emperor Francis of Austria and King William II of Prussia. Subsequently, volunteers from Marseilles heard the song and joined in the storming in the Tuileries on Aug. 10, 1792. The song was thereafter quickly reprinted a great many times, usually under the title Marches des Marseillais or variant thereof" (Fuld). "La Marseillaise est un hymne d'éveil et de résistance qui a valu pour les résistances qui ont suivi, qui vaut pour celles que nécessite notre temps, et qui vaudra pour les résistances futures." - Edgar Morin Fuld notes that the earliest printings of the famous anthem appeared either in broadside form or in periodicals, and all are extremely rare; this printing, its first appearance in a book, was officially authorized by the author and is highly desirable. The copy, in a Simier binding, is particularly so: tipped-in is an Autograph Note signed by Rouget de Lisle, authorizing the payment of a debt "au citoyen de Buehr" (?), dated "le cinq thermidor, l'an 6" (i.e., July 24, 1797).

FOURTH CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES: AT THE FIRST SESSION...AN ACT FOR ESTABLISHING TRADING HOUSES WITH THE INDIAN TRIBES [caption title]

Philadelphia. 1796.. [4]pp. on folded folio sheet. Signed by Secretary of State Timothy Pickering at the end of text. Manuscript docket in an unknown hand on the blank fourth page. Fine. In a half morocco box. This act, known as the Trading House Act, was passed by the first session of the Fourth United States Congress on April 18, 1796. It sought to bring commerce with Indian tribes under the control of the U.S. government by licensing and restricting trade through a small group of authorized agents operating trading houses beyond the designated frontier of settlement. The act made purely private trade illegal, a step taken to control exploitation of the Indian populace, regulate border tensions, attempt to influence the Indians in their British and Spanish contacts to the North and South, and bring fees to the government. The assertion of government control over the Indian trade was a direct outgrowth of the American victory over the Indian tribes of the Old Northwest at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794 and the Treaty of Greenville in August 1795, but it sought to address an endemic problem of illicit trade. As part of the peace, a boundary line known as "the Greenville line" was established, beyond which the U.S. government agreed to prevent settlement. By this act only licensed traders would be allowed into the Indian territories west of the line, working through agents in settled trading houses. The President would appoint agents to head the trading houses, and all trade had to be accounted for to the Executive branch. The price of trade goods would be regulated, and any private trade was strictly forbidden. Although the terms of the Greenville Treaty were soon abrogated, this act set the pattern for regulating the Indian trade until 1822, when the system was abolished. The act ends with the printed signatures of George Washington and John Adams, and the autograph signature of Timothy Pickering as Secretary of State. A Revolutionary soldier and key figure in Federal politics, Pickering served as Secretary of State from 1795 to 1800, first under Washington and then Adams. This would appear to be an official copy, actually signed by Pickering. All official copies of acts in the first three Congresses were signed by the Secretary of State, but the practice was then (supposedly) dropped; this is the first time we have seen a Fourth Congress act so signed. Rare: NAIP locates only five copies, evidently none signed. BRISTOL B9756. SHIPTON & MOONEY 47959. ESTC W14649.

Conversationslexikon mit vorzüglicher Rücksicht auf die gegenwärtigen Zeiten - Zweiter Theil

Friedrich August Leupold, Leipzig 1796. Zweiter Theil, Leipzig 1796. 460 S. Fraktur. Kein Schutzumschlag Pappband 8°. Gut

Supplément au Voyage de Bougainville [in:] SUARD, J.B.A. and S.J. BOURLET DE VAUXCELLES. Opuscules philosophiques et littéraires, la plupart posthumes ou inédites

Paris: Chevet, 1796. Octavo in fours, an excellent uncut copy with ample margins, contemporary mottled pink paper boards with manuscript paper labels to spine, some wear to joints and spine, from the Talleyrand-Périgord library with armorial bookplate. Diderot takes on the noble savage. First edition, a fine large paper copy, with the philosophe Diderot's important essay on Bougainville and Tahiti as the highlight of this collection, which includes moral and philosophical essays by authors such as the Marquise du Châtelet, Necker, Dumarsais, and the Abbé Galiani.Bougainville, unaware of Wallis's stop at Tahiti the preceding year, had believed himself to have been the discoverer of a South Sea paradise, and his official account included a lengthy and idyllic section on the island group which was vastly influential in the development of the European ideal of the noble savage.Diderot's essay is his response to the notion of the "noble savage", particularly in light of the fate of Ahu-Toru (Aotourou), the Tahitian who caused a sensation in fashionable Paris when he returned with Bougainville. The essay was first written as early as 1772 or 1773, and circulated in manuscript for more than twenty years before being published here. In this fictional appendix to Bougainville, Diderot expressed his pessimism about the likely European influence on the new discoveries in the South Seas, in the process developing a vigorous satire on European civilisation. At stake are French claims to ownership of Tahiti: Bougainville "took possession" of the islands, but in a supposed response to this act, one of the chiefs here asks rhetorically how the Europeans would react if a Tahitian landed in France and claimed it ('Si un Otaïtien débarquoit un nour sur vos côtes, et qu'il gravât sur une de vos pierres ou sur l'écorce d'un de vos arbres: Ce pays appartient aux habitans d'Otaïti, qu'en penserois-tu?').Uncut and on fine wove paper, this is undoubtedly the deluxe "Papier-vélin" edition, as noted in the colophon. This fine copy has the bookplate of the house of Talleyrand-Périgord, with the motto of the house "Re que Diou" emblazoned: given the close relationship between the great French diplomat Talleyrand himself and the philosophes, this copy is likely from his private library.

Letters from Mr Fletcher Christian, containing a Narrative of the Transactions on board His Majesty's Ship Bounty, Before and after the Mutiny, with his subsequent Voyages and Travels in South America

London: H.D. Symonds, 1796. Octavo; a very good copy in a good modern binding of grained antique style calf, banded spine gilt, red morocco label. Christian myths. The very rare first edition of this wonderful fantasy about the fate of the ringleader of the Bounty mutiny. What had happened to Christian was of immense interest in late-eighteenth-century England: the actual outcome would not be known until Captain Mayhew Folger came across the surviving Bounty mutineers on Pitcairn Island in 1808.This fascinating spurious production masquerades as a collection of seven letters from Fletcher Christian after his supposed "escape" from Pitcairn and subsequent adventures in South America. According to the letters printed here Christian mingled with Peruvian nobles, studied Indian languages at St Jago and left Buenos Aires on a voyage to Spain. It is interesting to note that despite the weight of evidence to the contrary, a tradition remains that Christian escaped from Pitcairn and returned to England via South America. Rather as the Lord Lucan story was later to have, the Christian reappearance had its reports of sightings and vocal adherents, including the poet Wordsworth as well as Captain Heywood, the latter being convinced he saw Christian in Plymouth, while Christian's relatives in Cumberland reported that he visited them in 1808.This is an extremely rare book: it is recorded by the NUC, but without any locations noted; it is not recorded in the catalogues of the Kroepelien or Hill collections. This first edition was issued exactly as it appears here, although a frontispiece was added for a second edition issued by the same publisher the following year. Although Ferguson calls for the frontispiece in the first edition, neither the Edge-Partington copy nor a copy catalogued by Maggs Bros. in 1946 contained one.

Specimens of Arabian Poetry, from the Earliest Time to the Extinction of the Khalifat,

Cambridge: Printed by John Burges Printer to the University, , 1796. with Some Account of the Authors. Parge octavo (226 × 182 mm) Early nineteenthy-century half calf, marbled boards, neatly rebacked to style with the original red morocco label laid down, gilt rolls forming compartments, edges sprinkled blue. Sheet of musical notation, text in Arabic types, engraved head- and tail-pieces. Lightly rubbed on the boards, corners professionally restored, internally a lightly browned and with occasional spotting, but overall a clean and carefully refurbished copy, presenting well. First edition, second issue with a cancel title page, copies noted dated 1795. Carlyle was educated at Carlisle Grammar School and Cambridge, and while at Queens "profited from the instructions of a native of Baghdad, who passed in Britain under the name David Zamio. As a result, Carlyle became so proficient in oriental languages that he was appointed professor of Arabic on the resignation of Dr Craven in 1795" (Stanley Lane-Poole in ODNB). In 1799 Carlyle was appointed chaplain to Lord Elgin's mission to Constantinople and made an extensive tour through Asia Minor, Palestine, Greece, and Italy, collecting Greek and Syriac manuscripts for a proposed new version of the New Testament, which he did not live to accomplish. On his return to England in 1801 he was presented to the living of Newcastle upon Tyne, but his health had been undermined by the exertions of his expedition, and he died in 1804. Lane-Poole describes the present translation as "well-respected".

        POEMS

York: Printed by W. Blanchard, 1796. n. Hardcover. 191 x 124 mm (7 1/2 x 4 7/8"). Two volumes. HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY TREE CALF, ELABORATELY GILT, BY KALTHOEBER (his ticket on verso of front endpaper), covers bordered with gilt Greek key roll, flat spines ornately gilt in compartments featuring various repeated tools (quatrefoil, Greek key, foliate, etc.), each spine with black morocco label, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Both volumes with the early signature of Elizabeth Hervey on verso of front endpaper. Lower compartment of second volume with abrasion and moderate loss of gilt, one corner a little rubbed, otherwise only trivial wear, the bindings handsome and well preserved. Blanks at the back of each volume a little soiled, otherwise A VERY FINE AND VERY PRETTY SET, VIRTUALLY PRISTINE INTERNALLY. This is an extremely pleasing set bound by Christian Kalthoeber, one of the finest binders of the late 18th century. Like Staggemeier & Welcher, he came to London from Germany in response to the need to produce handsome bindings for the libraries of English gentlemen. He worked for the well-respected Baumgarten and then succeeded him in 1781. He produced many fine bindings, one of which was priced so high--at the staggering sum of 30 guineas--that George III insisted on seeing the volume in person. Although his skills began to erode in the first decade of the 19th century, Kalthoeber "was considered during his day to be the finest binder in the world." (Maggs Catalogue 966) The first volume of the present set contains some 20 odes, elegies, epitaphs, and dramatic poems, while the second volume contains the author's well-known didactic poem "The English Garden," which, according to the preface, was revised specially for this extensively annotated edition. A third volume of miscellaneous works by Mason was issued by the same printer in 1797. Although his own work is of considerable merit, Mason (1724-97) is perhaps best known for his friendship with Thomas Gray. From the time the two were in college, they were devoted friends, and Gray named Mason his literary executor, a position in which he was aided by Horace Walpole. Mason also wrote a biography of Gray and edited his letters.

A Narrative of the Proceedings of His MajestyÂ’s Fleet, Under the Command of Earl Howe, from the Second of May to the Second of June MDCCXCIV

London: T. Burton and Co., 1796. Tall 4to. (1)-81, 82*-88*, 83-(92), (*93)-*100, (6), 97-118pp. Engraved b/w frontispiece and two terminal folding engraved plates First edition of a confusingly paginated work commemorating the so-called “Glorious First of June” in which Lord Howe and the British fleet defeated Villaret de Joyeuse and the French fleet in the north Atlantic. This was the first major sea battle of the Revolutionary War, and the occasion of much rejoicing in England, even though the victory was less than total. The folding battle plan at the back refers to the text and represents the disposition of French and British fleets. Tacked on to the end of the narrative, and accounting for the strange pagination, are a reproduction in French of Jean Bon Saint-AndreÂ’s journal entry on board the "Le Montagne", and a sales pitch for two prints by commemorating the event. BMM Catalog. Vol 5, #1798 calls for only one folding plan, as does Worldcat. The present copy has the folding plan and a second folding plan entitled "The British Line of Battle Published Mar 5, 1796, by A.C. de Poggi." An untrimmed copy, bound in original paper covered boards with paper spine label. Some offsetting of plans, and occasional very light foxing, but a splendid copy overall, in its original binding.

LAWS OF NORTH-CAROLINA AT A GENERAL ASSEMBLY, BEGUN AND HELD AT THE CITY OF RALEIGH, ON THE SECOND DAY OF NOVEMBER, IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND NINETY-FIVE [caption title]

[Edenton, N.C.: Hodge & Wills, 1796].. 20pp. Folio. Dbd., slightly later paper backstrip. Evenly toned. Outer margin of leaf D2 torn, with a few words affected in the printed side notes on the verso. Good overall. A rare variant printing of the 1795 session laws of North Carolina, this being twenty pages compared with the more common thirty-one-page version. McMurtrie cites each version, but does not define the differences other than page length. "A supplement to Iredell's revision" - McMurtrie. The celebrated "Iredell edition" of the laws of the state of North Carolina was compiled and revised in 1791 by noted jurist James Iredell, who was named a justice of the Supreme Court before he turned forty. Iredell collected in chronological order all the laws then in force in the state, dating back to the early 18th century, and also provided an extensive subject index. This volume provides the laws and amendments to previous laws passed by the state assembly in 1795- 96. Among these are several laws emancipating slaves, including a law entitled: "An Act to emancipate Frank, a person of color." McMURTRIE 224.
