TRATADO DE TRIGONOMETRÍA ESFÉRICA PARA LA INSTRUCCION DE LOS GUARDIAS MARINAS. [bound with:] TRATADO DE COSMOGRAFÍA PARA LA INSTRUCCION DE LOS GUARDIAS MARINAS

Cartagena: En la Oficina de Marina de este Departamento, 1796.. Two volumes bound in one. [4],84pp. plus two folding engraved plates; [8],159pp. plus four folding engraved plates. Folio. Contemporary calf, mottled and stained, spine gilt. Spine slightly worn. Titlepages slightly soiled. Occasional minor dampstaining and age-toning, otherwise internally fresh and clean. A very good copy. A sammelband of two very rare late 18th- century Spanish illustrated technical treatises, both written expressly for the Marine-Guards. Instructions for the binder on page [4] of the first title regarding the placement of the engraved plates for the two treatises indicate that it was expected that the two titles would often be bound together. The two scientific texts, concerned with spherical trigonometry and cosmography, are detailed, highly technical, and intended for students with a strong background in mathematics, astronomy, and geography. Printed by the Office of the Navy in Cartagena, the texts were to provide mariners the solid theoretical grounding needed for successful navigation. Ciscar, the Director of Studies of the Academy for Marine- Guards in the Department of Cartagena, was the author of several other works on mathematics, astronomy, and navigation. Extremely rare, neither title in OCLC, NUC, or the pre- 1955 BRITISH MUSEUM CATALOGUE. PALAU 54961, 54960. NAVARRETE, p.527 (both titles). ENSAYO DE BIBLIOGRAFÍA MARÍTIMA ESPA?'OLA 1253 (TRATADO DE TRIGONOMETRÍA... only).

Guadalaxara: Impreso ... por D. Marinano Valdez Tellez Giron Small 4to (20.5 cm; 8"). [6] ff., 25, [1] pp.. 1796 Our sermonizer was "tesorero de la santa iglesia" of Guadalajara. The Carmelite nuns of the Convento de Religiosas Teresas are celebrating their centenary and are paying to have the the celebratory sermon printed, dedicating it to "la Virgen Madre, venerada con el título de la expectacion en la sagrada imágen de Zapopán," and providing a four-page introduction to the publication. Moreno uses Matthew 28:20 as the starting point for a homily on the monastery's founding. This is one of the first publications printed in Guadalajara, which did not get its first press until 1793. Searches of NUC and WorldCat locate only six copies in U.S. libraries. No copies are located via the OPACs of the Mexican or Spanish national libraries, of the Universidad de Guadalajara, or via CCPB or COPAC.         SCHEDULE of Papers. [41papers]. [Collection of Printed Internal Communications in the RoyalNavy, October 1796 - January 1797, Pertaining to the French Expeditionto Ireland]. (No title page, apparently as issued; completed frominternal information)

N.p., British Admiralty. 1796 - 1797.. Soft cover. 4to, 29cm,un-paginated. About 55 pp., including several folding tables, stab sewn,in the original plain blue wraps, frayed along the spine, wraps a bitwrinkled, very good condition, very rare. (ids) The documents concernthe state and condition of His Majesty's ships, and orders and lettersconcerning their sailing and deployment. This is all in reaction to theFrench expedition to Ireland, which was monitored by the British Fleetunder Colpoys. Despite all the bustle reported in these communications, the British fleet was ineffective and Colpoys was replaced. Fortunatelyfor the British, though maybe not so fortunate for Irish patriots, theweather accomplished what the Royal Navy could not, sending the Frenchfleet home in tatters. This is a fascinating document from the NapoleonicWars, pertaining to one of the more colorful incidents of that troubledperiod. - With the bookplate of well known collector and bibliographer,Mario Witt. .

REAL CEDULA DE S.M. Y SEÑORES DEL CONSEJO EN QUE SE MANDA OBSERVAR, Y GUARDAR EL TRATADO DE AMISTAD, LIMITES Y NAVEGACION CONCLUIDO Y RATIFICADO ENTRE SU REAL PERSONA Y LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DE AMÈRICA

Huesca: Por la Viuda de Miguel de Larumbe, 1796.. [2],21pp. on folded sheets. Folio. Old stain on final leaf, affecting a few lines of text; light marginal stain on two leaves. Else near fine. In a half morocco box. A rare regional printing of this far-reaching treaty. The treaty, comprising twenty-three articles, was signed on Sept. 4, 1796. Senator Thomas Pinckney represented the United States in the difficult negotiations. Various clauses of the treaty define the boundaries of Florida, establish the Mississippi as the definite boundary between Spanish Louisiana and the settlements of the United States and, most significantly, secure common navigation of the Mississippi for Americans and Spaniards. After 1783, Spain had asserted her absolute right to the navigation of the Mississippi. To the western settler, the Alleghenies and the bad roads were enough to cut off any route to market other than down the river, and it was not easy to restrain acts of forcible defiance of the Spanish claim. The northern states were willing to allow the Spanish claim in return for a commercial treaty, but the southern states protested angrily, and the question threatened the stability of the United States. The specter was not laid to rest until the negotiation and ratification of this treaty, which had wide-reaching ramifications for American expansion. This printing is not in Palau, Medina, Servies, nor on OCLC. Rare.

Paris: Chez Deroy, 1796. Quarter Calf, Speckled Boards. Very Good. 4to. 25.5 by 20 cm. Two frontises (one with engraving, other hand-colored plate), title, [2], 221, [3] pp. With 50 hand-colored aquatint plates, the most exciting not merely costume but showing military and equestrians on move or in action. (And first frontis is B/W.) Colas 1298. The timing of the publication was significant -- it was the fourth year of the Directoire, and so noted on the title. Revolutionary France drew inspiration from Ancient Rome in terms of its republicanism, its muscular outlook, and its aesthetics (although this was a trend that certainly predated the Revolution). Note that this work is encountered without coloring most often. Moderate wear to the binding, and scattered light foxing and soiling within.

The Holy Land in Three Divisions: Jerusalem and Galilee; Jordan and Bethlehem; Idumea and Petra

Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co, London - All parts bound in one volume Half folio (approximately 10 x 14 inches exclusive of margins). original scarlet padded morocco, heavey gilt decorations, spine with raised bands, extra gilt, lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 42 tinted lithographs by Louis Haghe from original drawings by David Roberts. (all present.) Plates slightly larger (32 x 24 cm) than in the earlier quarto edition and are also identified outside the image. David Roberts, R.A. (24 October 1796 Ð 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838Ð1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.In 1838, Roberts embarked on a journey that would shape Europe's perception of the Middle East and then Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce the lavishly illustrated plates of the Sketches in the Holy Land and Syria, 1842Ð1849 and Egypt & Nubia series. He funded the work through advance subscriptions which he solicited directly. The scenery and monuments of Egypt and Holy Land were fashionable but had hitherto been hardly touched by British artists, and so Roberts quickly accumulated 400 subscription commitments, with Queen Victoria being subscriber No. 1. Her complete set is still in the Royal Collection. The timing of publication just before photographs of the sites became available proved fortuitous. Spine ends, edges and corner a little rubbed, spine a tad darkened (gilt very bright), preliminary and terminal leaves with some brown spotting rarely affecting the image area [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Fantin-Desodoards assured, initially accompanied by Mirabeau, translation and formatting for editing. The book contains a lot of valuable information, it is cut into thin varied chapters, including the Dutch counters, Portuguese, and jeopardizes the English in Hindustan. These memories should have appeared in 1784, as they were led by a delegation in order to inform the French about the situation of this country, but the Revolution and events in France delayed the publication. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

(iv), 262, (2, appendix), (2, notes), (2, ads) pp. Modern calf antique, early ink signature on title-page, first and last leaves browned, overall, a very good copy. First edition of these eloquent travel narratives, comprising the first published account in English of a woman travelling on business. "When Johnson published the Letters they found an enthusiastic public, not least among young poets. The wording of her description of the waterfalls she visited . . . appears to have played a part in inspiring Coleridge's description of the sacred river Alph in Xanadu; and the theme of the book . . . set a fashion for questing romantic journeys. Byron, Wordsworth, Shelley, and Mary's as yet unborn daughter Mary, who sends her Frankenstein north at the end of his story, all read and followed in Mary Wollstonecraft's footsteps." (Tomalin, The Life and Death of Mary Wollstonecraft, Penguin 1992, p. 228.) Godwin noted in his memoirs (1798): "If ever there was a book calculated to make a man in love with its author, this appears to me to be the book." With the final advertisement leaf listing all of Mary Wollstonecraft's books from Johnson to that date, the first "bibliography" of her work. Rothschild 2598. Windle A7a.

The Holy Land in Three Divisions: Jerusalem and Galilee; Jordan and Bethlehem; Idumea and Petra

London: Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co. original scarlet padded morocco, heavey gilt decorations, spine with raised bands, extra gilt, lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Spine ends, edges and corner a little rubbed, spine a tad darkened (gilt very bright), preliminary and terminal leaves with some brown spotting rarely affecting the image area. Half folio (approximately 10 x 14 inches exclusive of margins). All parts bound in one volume Illustrated with 42 tinted lithographs by Louis Haghe from original drawings by David Roberts. (all present.) Plates slightly larger (32 x 24 cm) than in the earlier quarto edition and are also identified outside the image David Roberts, R.A. (24 October 1796 – 25 November 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841. In 1838, Roberts embarked on a journey that would shape Europe's perception of the Middle East and then Roberts worked with lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce the lavishly illustrated plates of the Sketches in the Holy Land and Syria, 1842–1849 and Egypt & Nubia series. The timing of publication just before photographs of the sites became available proved fortuitous .

A Select Collection of Epigrams. Many of them Original.

Printed for Thomas Clio Rickman and John Walker 1796 - FIRST EDITION, some scattered foxing, occasionally a poor impression of the type, pp. vi, [1], 112, 12mo, contemporary calf, single gilt fillet border on sides, spine gilt, red lettering piece, rebacked preserving the original spine, good. Rare; ESTC records just BL, 2 in the Bodleian, Folger, LoC, and Wayne State. Rickman defines an Epigram as 'a few lines on a given subject, either humourous or grave; having an unexpected and happy turn to work up its climax.' As such, there aren't very many, and the smallness of the volume is thus doubly appropriate. His own contributions are not numerous, but include an Impromptu on Thomas Paine's Work - Rights of Man, being prohibited Sale. Most of the epigrams are of the humourous kind, on cuckoldry, scolding wives, &c, but fun is also poked at monarchs and the Church. 'Rickman's name will be forever linked with Paine, for he "was to Paine what Boswell was to Johnson" . Paine stayed as a lodger at the Rickmans' home in 1791 and 1792 and while there completed the second part of The Rights of Man . Rickman faced constant suspicion for selling Paine's books. He did not make matters easy for himself by composing and publishing songs in praise of political liberty and the French Revolution' (ODNB). (ESTC T115750)

The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne. A Highland Story

Philadelphia: Published by Thomas Bradford, 1796. First American edition. 12mo. Contemporary sheep, red morocco label. Some chipping of spine, rubbing, some browning and spotting of text, tears, mostly marginal though that on I6 with loss of four lines of text. First American edition. 12mo. Her first book, published in 1789. Described by Baker as a "sham historical novel mixing up baronial and highland life on the north-east coast of Scotland with the courtly and chivalrous society of Gothic romance" (p. 21). Radcliffe is known best for her Gothic novels where acts of the supernatural and the mysterious are used to draw horror and terror from the reader and are ultimately given some commonplace explanation. The Gothic novels of Radcliffe, Walpole, Godwin and others greatly influenced American novelists, especially Charles Brockden Brown who adapted the Gothic elements to the American climate and audience. Pietro Trapassi (1698-1782), better known as Metastasio, was regarded as one of the greatest poets of the 18th century; his libretti were set to music by numerous prominent composers. Although his works had been translated into English by John Hoole in 1767, Burney's treatment of him is still the most extensive in English. "Although his fame rests chiefly on his 27 opera seria librettos, his works intended for musical setting also include a comic intermezzo, close to 40 occasional pieces (ranging from elaborately staged feste teatrale to simple complimenti for two participants), 8 oratorios, 37 cantatas, 8 solo complimenti, 7 canzonettas, 33 strofe per musica and other lyrical stanzas. This broad spectrum, widened further by settings of some of the 32 sonnets, has brought over 400 composers in contact with Metastasian texts." Don Neville in Grove Music Online.

The GROUP; or, An Elegant Representation. Illustrated.

Philadelphia: Printed for Thomas Stephens, By Lang and Ustick, 1796. 35, [1 (Errata)]. A verse satire in support of George Washington's administration and the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation Between His Britannic Majesty and The United States of America, commonly known as the Jay Treaty after its chief American negotiator, John Jay. Much of the poem is in the form of a dialogue "in which various mechanics and tradesmen, Solon Verges a carpenter [the subject of the frontispiece], Nat Futtock a shipwright, Gobbo Finis a coffin-maker, John Stripe a schoolmaster, with others, are represented as meeting for discussion on topics beyond their reach, respecting politics and the state. The coarse and vulgar material of low Jacobinism, which is not at all disguised in the poem, is occasionally elevated by the polish of the author's verses" (Cyclopaedia of American Literature, 1875). Authorship is usually attributed to William Cliffton, son of a wealthy Quaker, whose ill health allowed him the time for literary pursuits. His works are noted for their "vituperations of the French revolutionists and the party enemies of the writer" [i.e., Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans] (Kettel, Specimens of American Poetry). Marbled paper spine perished. Bookseller slips to ffep. Light offset to t.p. from frontis. Otherwise, a respectable VG - VG copy.
