1795 OFFICIAL HANDWRITTEN DOCUMENT SIGNED by KING OF SPAIN to the GOVERNOR of CUBA

1795 - OFFICIAL MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT on laid paper, in Spanish. SIGNED BY THE KING OF SPAIN with "YO EL REY". Appears to be the SIGNATURE of KING CHARLES IV / KING CARLOS IV. It is an actual hand signature, not the woodblock YO EL REY signature that is so often seen on his "signed" documents. I have confidence that this hand signature is that of the KING, though it could have been hand signed in his name by one of his officials, I have no way of knowing with absolute certainty. Written on both sides of an 8.25x11.75" sheet of laid, watermarked paper. The document is headed with a manuscript EL REY at the top of the front page, and is SIGNED on the back page, at the end of the written text, with YO EL REY. Undated (insofar as I can decipher), circa 1790s (1795?) The document begins with: "Intendente de Exército, y Real Hacienda de la Isla de Cuba" (i.e. addressed to the Governing Official of Cuba). I have not completely translated this document because the handwriting combined with the oxidation of the iron gall ink (causing offsetting from one side of the page to the other) makes it difficult. I do note that it discusses travel from Cadiz to New Spain, and from Veracruz to Guiana and Caracas. The paper has an interesting WATERMARK with the letters A and T inside circles, one on top of the other, with a cross at the very top. Also interesting is that at the bottom margin of the back page, about 5" below the King's "Yo El Rey" signature, is another signature (that I cannot make out) just below which are three additional handwritten lines. This brief text also mentions Cuba and Havana. Why these few lines are present at the bottom of the back page I have no idea. The document is in generally GOOD condition with a horizontal fold across the middle, quite a number of small holes in the writing where the pen point penetrated the paper, and some typical signs of age and use including oxidation of the iron gall ink, some edge wear and age toning. Still a solid and well-kept historic document relating to Cuba, South America, New Spain, and the King of Spain. I have tried to provide some high quality photos for your examination. I welcome questions and informative comments. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Dissertation on First-Principles of Government

Paris: Printed at the English Press,, 1795. [Together with:] The Age of Reason; being an investigation of true and of fabulous theology. Part the Second. London, printed, New-York, re-printed by Mott & Lyon, for Fellows & Adam and J. Reid, 1796. 2 works bound as one, octavo (161 x 98 mm). Contemporary tree sheep skilfully rebacked with the original gilt banded spine laid down, red and green morocco twin labels (lettered "Part II"), gilt roll tool border on sides. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Paine by Scoles. General light foxing, a couple of leaves in the Dissertation shaved at the fore-edge by the binder (but without loss of legibility) otherwise a very good copy. First edition of the Dissertation, first US edition of The Age of Reason (Part Two only). "Dissertation on the First Principles of Government (1795) is essentially an epitome of his case in Rights of Man and provides an extremely clear and uncluttered statement of his mature views on government. The case for universal manhood suffrage was not, however, obvious to a convention which had been driven by the fury of the Parisian mob over much of the preceding two years, and the new constitution survived Paine's prose to be inaugurated in October 1795. Paine was not elected to it and his official role in France now ended" (ODNB). Included here is Paine's speech to the Convention of 7 July 1995. The Age of Reason is "a trenchant and uncompromising attack on Christianity and all formal religions together with a brief statement of Paine's religious beliefs" (ibid). Of the Dissertation Copac locates copies with this imprint at only four British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Oxford, Manchester, Scotland), otherwise well-represented in US libraries (some impressions have the Speech separately paginated, not the case here).

        Southwark Fair

Invented Painted & Engrav'd by Wm. Hogarth 1733. [J & J Boydell c.1795] - Copper engraving and etching Image 342 x 454 mm, Plate 364 mm, Sheet 434 x 588 mm A very lively and complex engraving of Southwark Fair, which was held around Borough High St each year in September, until its abolition in 1762 by the Court of Common Council. The fair gathered a reputation for all manner of violence and vice, and these various circumstances of criminality and tumult are depicted expertly by Hogarth in this scene. In the heaving square between near St George's Church are numerous amusements, theatrical booths, and street performances. Banners slung from the surrounding buildings advertise such diverse theatrical performances as the Drury Lane 'Stage Mutiny,' the 'Seige of Troy,' 'Punches Opera,' the Fall of Man from Eden, and even a Royal Waxworks of the Court of France. To the left, a performance of the 'Fall of Bajazet' experiences an appropriately ironic fall of its own, as the stage collapses onto a booth selling ceramics. Between two of the buildings, a tightrope walker hangs suspended from a line, while a rope-flyer dives from the church tower in the distance. The crowd at centre is a motley collection of caricatures. A dwarf playing bagpipes stands alongside a trained dog, walking on its back legs and dressed in the habit of a gentleman. A black trumpeter and a drummer-girl lead a band through the crowd, while one of their number, in Roman dress, is accosted by the bailiffs. To the right, a wastrel chats up two country girls, one of whom closely resembles Moll from Hogarth's celebrated 'Harlot's Progress.' In the extreme right, the broadsword fighter James Figg sits atop his blind horse, brandishing his weapon, while two figures sit observing a peepshow in a small hutch. Hogarth's advertisements for the Southwark Fair suggest that it was originally intended as a coda for his 'Rake's Progress,' though owing to delays in finishing the series, the Southwark Fair was actually published before the Rake. William Hogarth (1697 - 1764) was born in London, the son of an unsuccessful schoolmaster and writer from Westmoreland. After apprenticeship to a goldsmith, he began to produce his own engraved designs in about 1710. He later took up oil painting, starting with small portrait groups called conversation pieces. He went on to create a series of paintings satirising contemporary customs, but based on earlier Italian prints, of which the first was The Harlot's Progress (1731), and perhaps the most famous The Rake's Progress. His engravings were so plagiarised that he lobbied for the Copyright Act of 1735, commonly referred to as 'Hogarth's Act,' as a protection for writers and artists. During the 1730s Hogarth also developed into an original painter of life-sized portraits, and created the first of several history paintings in the grand manner. Paulson 131 i/i, BM Satires 1960 Condition: Excellent impression with full margins. Light foxing and manuscript number to margin, not affecting image or plate.

THE WAY TO WEALTH OR POOR RICHARD IMPROVED. LA SCIENCE DE BONHOMME RICHARD. LETTRES DE FRANKLIN. DIALOGUE ENTRE LA GOUTTE ET FRANKLIN. QUELQUES MOTS SUR L'AMERIQUE. AVIS A CEUX QUI VOUDROIENT ALLER S'ETABLIR DANS CETTE CONTREE

Paris: [Printed at Dijon by P. Causse for] Ant. Aug. Renouard, 1795. ONE OF SIX LARGE PAPER COPIES n. First published in 1768 as the follow-up to "Poor Richard's Almanac," "The Way to Wealth" became one of the most widely printed and translated works by an American author, and the present luxury copy is the most desirable form of what Ford says is "the prettiest edition yet printed." Our volume contains both the original English text and then the French translation of "Wealth," as well as three other important sections: the French versions of Franklin's "Letters," "The Dialogue between Franklin and the Gout," and "Some Words on America. Advice for those who wish to establish themselves in that Country." The vast margins here identify this as one of the six Large Paper Copies of the Renouard edition recorded by Ford. Printer, polymath, and Founding Father Benjamin Franklin (1706-90) was one of the most fascinating men of the 18th century. The present work no doubt found an appreciative audience in France, where Franklin was especially revered. He had served as the minister plenipotentiary to France for the United States from 1777 to 1785, establishing himself as "the most essential and successful American diplomat of all time." (ANB) His (rather jealous) compatriot John Adams noted that in France, "his name was familiar to government and people, to kings, courtiers, nobility, clergy, and philosophers, as well as plebeians, to such a degree that there was scarcely a peasant or a citizen, a valet de chambre, coachman or footman, a lady's chambermaid or a scullion in a kitchen, who was not familiar with it, and who did not consider him as a friend to human kind." Described by Furstenberg as "the father of the modern luxury edition," Renouard (1765-1853) set the standard for the period of the Empire as publisher, bookseller, bibliographer, and collector. At the time this item was published, he was among the leading Paris booksellers who were bringing out handsome printings of the best writers. Although Furstenberg says that "the significance of Renouard for the development of the modern book is . . . many sided," it seems that during his lifetime, he was best known as the person "to whom his age owed a number of the most beautiful editions." Of special note here is the luxurious paper used, which is as fine as the best employed by Bodoni.. 185 x 111 mm. Contemporary rose speckled boards, flat spine with remnants of paper label. With engraved frontispiece portrait. Front pastedown with bookseller's ticket of Theophile Barrois, Paris. Ford 135; Sabin 25596. Spine somewhat darkened, paper a bit chafed and lightly soiled, but the insubstantial binding generally and surprisingly well preserved. A little thumbing to opening leaves, isolated spots of foxing, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, the leaves clean, fresh, and bright, with margins that occupy more of the page than the text. The engraved image differs from the original oil in some aspects of Franklin's dress, but it is undoubtedly based on the painting by Vanloo. The engraving was part of a series of images of prominent statesmen and scientists by Alix begun in 1790 and concluded in 1797. The Franklin was exhibited at the Salon of 1795. The original portrait by Vanloo now resides at the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. The imprint was trimmed from the bottom margin of the engraving when it was framed.

Mehrf. alt gestempelt.         Memoirs of the First Forty-Five Years of the Life of James Lackington, the present Bookseller in Chiswell-street, Moorfields, London. Written by Himself. In Forty-Six Letters to a Friend. With a Triple Dedication. 1. To the Public. 2. To Respectable Booksellers. 3. To Sordid Booksellers. A New Edition, corrected, and much enlarged; interspersed with many original humourous Stories, and droll Anecdotes.

Engraved frontis. port. of the author. 540 pp. 8vo, cont. red straight-grained morocco (slightly darkened), flat spine gilt, a.e.g. London: Printed for the Author, 1795. "A New Edition, Corrected and much enlarged; interspersed with many original humourous Stories, and droll Anecdotes, not in former Editions; to which is also added, an Index." Lackington (1746-1815), who started his business career at the age of ten as an itinerant meat pieman, became an apprentice shoemaker four years later. In 1773 he went to London and opened up a bookstall and shoemaker's shop in Featherstone Street, St. Luke's. His exceptional industry and frugality enabled him to become one of the leading booksellers of his time. In 1791 he calculated that he was selling about 100,000 volumes each year. His legendary shop at Finsbury Square in London was named "The Temple of the Muses." Lackington revolutionized the book trade by becoming the first bookseller to refuse to sell books on credit. His cash only approach allowed him to offer books less expensively. Lackington also refused to destroy or discard remaindered books and instead sold them at bargain prices. His memoirs are "the principal source of information about him; in addition to the particulars of his life, the work is full of curious anecdotes and many quotations from a wide range of authors."-ODNB. He retired in 1798 and engaged in a number of charitable activities. I believe this is the final edition to be revised by him. Fine copy, most attractively bound. Faint embossed stamp of a library on frontispiece and title with a small rubberstamp number on verso of title. Half-title lacking. .
