Journey overland in colonial Peru by a Chilean Jesuit. 1795. Lima. In folio (304 mm x 208 mm). 6 ff. Unbound. Inner marginal water stain into text; readable throughout.Important manuscript copy in perfectly legible calligraphy, with the itinerary of Eysaguirre and Pastoriza; containing vast news of the expeditions carried out by the Jesuits in the mountains of several Peruvian towns as Quimiri, La Sal, Metraro, Eneno, and others. The relation begins by informing the dispatching of Father Yrusta to Eneno and of being detained at Quimiri for four days, awaiting the response of the Inca ("estuvimos cuatro dias detenidos en dho pueblo esperando la respuesta del Ynga, al cavo de ellos, llegaron de Eneno los Curacas de Nijandares, y la Sal, acompañados de seis soldados, armados todos de sus arcos, y flechas"), after which soldiers armed with arrows and bows arrived and mentioned their father expected them. The relation continues in full detail, with the audiences with the tribal leaders, welcoming?s, farewells, and other details with the outstanding details observed during their journey overland.Miguel de Eysaguirre was son of Domingo de Eysaguirre and Maria Rosa de Arechavala y Alday y Azpee, thus a member of a prominent Chilean family; it seems that he was at some point Fiscal of the Real Audiencia de Lima.

        Vermont from actual Survey

Philadelphia: M. Carey, 1795. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 10.5 x 8.5". Sheet measures 16.5 x 10.75". This map depicts the new state of Vermont shortly after its admission to the Union in 1791. The boundaries of Lake Champlain and the Connecticut River set the state off from the surrounding land, which is left undefined as to isolate and highlight its detail. Original and coloring pleasantly defines district and county lines, showing the extent of the state's settlement. Dartmouth College, founded in 1769, is also labeled. In the bottom left of the map, a charming title cartouche features local landscape features such as pine trees and waterfalls. The map was published in Carey's "Atlas" as part of Guthrie's "Geography Improved." Has toning, foxing, and some folds, but they do not detract from the map's overall pleasing quality. Amos Doolittle (1754-1832) was an American engraver and silversmith based in Connecticut. His engravings after the Battles of Lexington and Concord earned him such renown that many referred to him as "The Revere of Connecticut," calling on his services as both an artist and teacher. He established a shop in New Haven where he sold portraits, maps, and bookplates. Raised in a family of publishers and book sellers, Mathew Carey (1760--1839) became one of the most important figures of early American cartography. Carey was based in Philadelphia, where he owned a publishing firm and oversaw a cottage system of independent artists and craftsmen. His important "Atlas" was the first American-published atlas of the United States. Furthermore, the maps his firm produced represent some of the best quality and most informative depictions of the United States in the early period after it gained independence. This map is a wonderful example of Doolittle and Carey's fine work.

        Esquisse d\'un tableau historique

ìCan Man Become Perfect?îCONDORCET, [Marie Jean Antoine Nicolas Caritat, Marquis de]. Paris: Chez Agasse, Lían III. de la RÃ?publique [1795].First edition of Condorcetís philosophical masterpiece. Octavo (7 7/8 x 4 13/16 inches; 201 x 123 mm). viii, 389, [1, blank] pp.Contemporary quarter calf over dark blue paste-paper boards, spine gilt with dotted bands and ornaments, gilt red morocco lettering piece. Old owner\'s signature on half-title. A quarter-inch marginal tear at the bottom of leaf M42 that does not affect the text. Light foxing throughout. A blue ink stain on top edge from signature Z to the end. Overall, a clean and attractive copy.ìIt was the gospel of the nineteenth century that mankind is destined for indefinite future progress. Condorcet [1743-1794], looking back and then forward, saw proof of this in the growing equality between classes and nations, the intellectual, physical and moral improvement of man; and he prophesied that popular education on correct principles would strengthen and assure this progress...In the Esquisse [ëAn Historical Outline of the Progress of the Human Mindí], published after his death, Condorcet traces the history of man through epochs, the first three covering his progress from savagery to pastoral community and thence to the agricultural state. The next five span the growth of civilizations and knowledge down to Descartes, and the ninth describes the revolution of Condorcetís own lifetime, from Newton to Rousseau. The prophetic view of the tenth epoch shows Condorcet at his most original. He forecasts the destruction of inequality between nations and classes, and the improvement, intellectual, moral and physical of human nature...it is as the most fully developed exposition of the progress of man that Condorcetís work is now remembered, and it is this which has given its lasting appealî (Printing and the Mind of Man).Printing and the Mind of Man 246.HBS 65358.$2,000

Presidential Document Signed, on parchment, folio, Washington, July 24, 1815

. This visually appealing document is a ship's passport with dual engraved maritime vignettes below the scalloped top margin and Presidential seal affixed at lower left corner. .President Madison and James Monroe as Secretary of State have signed this maritime document acknowledging that the ship Lucas of Salem, Nathaniel Sage, commander, belongs to the United States. Also signed by the Collector of the Port of Salem, Will R. Lee. Fading to manuscript portions, but President Madison' signature is strong, Monroe's signature is somewhat lighter. Ships' passports were used for US vessels sailing in the Mediterranean. The passports resulted from an agreement in 1795 to allow the passage of ships in return for payments to the Barbary pirates who required countries to pay tribute in exchange for not capturing that country's ships and crews. America was one of the countries who agreed to pay for safe passage. These passports identified ships which had safe passage. The scalloped edge of the passport shows that the top portion had been cut and sent ahead to be matched when, in this case the Schooner Weymouth, arrived. An historic document with great visual appeal.

[Madrid], widow of Joaquin Ibarra, 1796. Narrow 4to (20.5 x 14 cm). With a woodcut crowned cypher monogram (of a Spanish Duke?) on the title-page and 7 folding leaves containing 13 numbered letterpress tables. Early 19th-century gold-tooled tree calf, Stormont marbled endpapers.

Bibl. Mar. Española 265; Palau 5752 (noting only 6 folding leaves); Houzeau & Lancaster 10540 (1795 ed.); for Galiano: Howgego, to 1800, G6. Greatly expanded second edition of a treatise on the determination of latitude and longitude at sea, by Dionisio Alcalá Galiano (1760-1805), Spanish explorer, cartographer and captain in the Royal Spanish armada. His much shorter account (26 leaves instead of 45 and without the folding tables) was also printed by the widow Ibarra, in 1795. Galiano was a pioneer of the use of the chronometer in Spain, allowing him to produce far more accurate maps of the Spanish colonies in the Americas. Galiano enrolled in the Spanish naval school in 1775. After graduating in 1779 he participated in hydrographic surveys of the Spanish and South American coasts and other Spanish naval scientific explorations.Joaquin Ibarra (1725-1785) had been printer to the court of King Carlos III and Spain's greatest printer, vying with Bodoni and the Didots as a fine printer. His widow continued the tradition and upheld the quality of presswork and materials. The present book is well printed on fine Catalan laid paper by Joseph Llorens, who had supplied paper for Ibarra's famous 1780 Cervantes.A library stamp has been cut out of the title-page and the hole expertly restored, not affecting text or monogram. Otherwise in fine condition, with the paper still crisp. The binding is worn at the hinges but still good.

n.p., circa, 1795. Mid grey marbled cover with brown leather spine. Title embossed in gold on red leather insert on spine. Given to Hindmarsh on board HMS Victory. From the library of John Hindmarsh, later the first Governor of South Australia, given to him in 1803 while with Nelson on HMS Victory. The inscription reads: "Thos. Atkinson Master of His Majesty's Ship Theseus August the 12th 1798" and in a second hand has been added "given to J Hindmarsh on the HMS Victory 1803." Not only is the book an attractive relic of Hindmarsh, it also unites two veterans of the Battle of the Nile, the stunning British Naval victory which turned the tide of the war in the Mediterranean in 1798, a battle in which both Hindmarsh and Atkinson served with great distinction. Hindmarsh joined the Royal Navy in 1793 as a fourteen year old, sailing to the West Indies, seeing service on the "Glorious First of June" (1794), Cadiz and the Battle of the Nile. Nelson was much taken with the young officer, and personally gave him his lieutenant's commission on board HMS Victory in 1803, clearly around the time that the gallant young officer was given this book by Thomas Atkinson. Atkinson had first served with Nelson on the Theseus in 1797, but as the inscription implies, was still on board in August 1798 (after Nelson had relinquished command of the vessel), but later rejoined Nelson, who described him as 'one of the best Masters I have seen in the Royal Navy.' Given that in 1798 this was a newly published French book, and that it was acquired while the Theseus was on active service (Atkinson specifically says 12 August 1798), it is certain that it represents booty taken from a captured French man-of-war, possibly the frigate Artemise or either of the Heureux or Mercure, three ships which the Theseus is known to have forced to surrender. The volume would have been of immeasurable service to any young naval officer with an interest in navigation, as it prints the mathematical tables of the Frenchman François Callet, printing the calculation of logarithms to seven-places.

Graf Benjowsky oder die Verschwörung auf Kamtschatka . Ein Schauspiel in fünf Aufzügen. [Count Benyowsky:The Conspiracy of Kamchatka, a tragi-comedy in five acts]

Leipzig: Kummer, 1795. Octavo, engraved vignette on title, various annotated stage directions in red pencil; short tear to title, some wear to head of spine, a good copy in contemporary half calf, paper label on spine. Benyowsky exploits staged. Rare play based on the exploits of Hungarian adventurer Count Benyowsky in the Pacific Ocean, Benyowsky (actually Be?ovský) was a Hungarian noble who was captured and imprisoned by the Russians for his support of the Polish nationalists. In 1770 Benyowsky was exiled in Kamchatka in eastern Siberia, at a time when there had been few European incursions in the region beyond the visits of Russian fur-traders. With the help of some fellow prisoners he managed to escape and commandeer a Russian battleship for a voyage to California via the northern Pacific. He navigated through the Aleutian Islands, but had to change course to Japan, Formosa, and Macao, where he arrived in 1771. On his arrival in France the following year, he was empowered by King Louis XV to establish trading posts on Madagascar. As self-proclaimed Emperor of Madagascar, he was to become a rich source of inspiration for writers, poets, composers, and painters. This play loosely based on Benyowsky's life is by German playwright August von Kotzebue, father of the famous navigator Otto von Kotzebue. In part because of Benyowsky's pro-independence beliefs, when the play premiered in American it was part of a bill which included the first ever public performance of the Star Spangled Banner, in Baltimore on 19 October 1814.

A Voyage to Botany Bay with a description of the Country, manners, Customs, religion, &c. of the Natives... [and] A Sequel to Barrington's Voyage comprising an Interesting Narrative of the Transactions and Behaviour of the Convicts; the Progress of the Colony...[etc.]

London: C. Lowndes and... H.D. Symonds, n.d. [circa 1795] &, 1801. Octavo, engraved frontispiece and title vignette to the first work; a fine copy, completely uncut in original papered boards, spine partly defective, preserved in a folding cloth box. Complete with the sequel. A desirable copy of an early pairing of the first two Barrington Botany Bay works; entirely as issued, uncut in original papered boards. By the time Barrington was transported to Botany Bay on the Third Fleet of 1791, his name was legendary in England due to his daring criminal exploits. Chapbook accounts of his trial were bestsellers, and unscrupulous London publishers were quick to exploit his notoriety to market a string of books on transportation and the new colony. The first work to bear his name was A Voyage to Botany Bay, which first appeared in 1795. A number of editions were published in this form, some dated, some undated as here; all editions are scarce. So popular was this account that A Sequel to Barrington's Voyage was issued in 1800. It was quickly reprinted in 1801, at which time the publisher then released the two works together, of which the present copy is an unusually fine example. Although these titles were certainly not the work of Barrington, they nonetheless provided considerable detail on eighteenth-century New South Wales not available elsewhere. Their popularity points to an English public whose appetite for news of the new colony was not satisfied by the more prestigious and expensive journals of the First Fleet officers.

Capitainens vid Engelske Ammiralitetet, Wiliam Bligh's Resa i Söderhafvet Åren 1788, 1789, 1790

Nyköping: Joh. Pet. Hammarin, 1795. Small octavo, woodcut headpiece; a little mild foxing, bottom edge of title-page neatly repaired yet very good in understated contemporary half calf. First Swedish edition. First Swedish edition of Bligh's Voyage to the South Seas. Rolf du Rietz's excellent note in the catalogue of the Kroepelien catalogue explains that this very rare version was anonymously translated by Carl Fr. Landell from Georg Forster's German edition of the Bligh account, and includes Forster's introduction. As with the German edition on which it is based, this book only includes the new material from the 1792 Voyage: that is, none of the Narrative section is included here, and a footnote explains that Ödmann's Swedish translation of that part should be thought of as the "second volume", so-called. This explains, in passing, the otherwise rather cryptic "Förrste Delen" ("first part") noted on the title-page here. Such a publishing arrangement had been Bligh's original intention for the English edition, but he considered that some sections of the Narrative should be revised for republication. Ferguson noted only the Mitchell copy and another in the Kroepelien collection.

Saturday evening The Husbandman's return from labour

      J. Brydone, London 1795 - A fine stipple engraving depicting a rural idyll in 18th-century England. The image shows a family outside the door of their cottage. The father has just returned from the field. His wife hands him his youngest child, whom he kisses fondly. His other four children are gathered companionably to his left: the eldest daughter sits quietly darning some stockings, her younger sister washes a younger brother. A second brother watches attentively as a pair of piglets eat the scraps from a wicker basket. What became known as the "deserving poor" was an ever growing Romantic concern throughout the 19th century, as the industrialization of England took hold. The Romantic ideal of families living in a hard but harmonious relation to the soil was already in 1795 fading away, as the long process of enclosure deprived people like these of the land they worked, forcing them to seek jobs in towns. So this was, at the time of publication, an already somewhat nostaligc look a rural family life. William Bigg "was a pupil of Edward Penny, R.A., and by choice of his subjects at least a faithful follower of his master. In 1778 he entered the Academy schools. Bigg delighted in depicting. children. The first of many engaging works of this class was exhibited in 1778, 'Schoolboys giving Charity to a Blind Man.' It was followed a year later by one similar, 'A Lady and her Children relieving a Distressed Cottager.' Besides these his 'Palemon and Lavinia,' the 'Shipwrecked Sailor Boy,' and 'Youths relieving a Blind Man' were highly popular works, and were all engraved. Two good pictures from his easel are preserved in the Cottonian Museum at Plymouth. by choice of subjects and general manner of treatment he would rightly be classed with Wheatley and Morland. He was highly popular in his day, and the best engravers were employed upon his work." (DNB). Stipple-engraving, by William Nutter, after Bigg.
