[Boston]: S. Hall [imprint from colophon], [ca. , form completed and signed 1798]. 1795 - Broadsheet, 17 x 12 1/4 inches. Recto printed in three columns; blank form on verso completed in contemporary manuscript. Folio. One vertical and one horizontal fold. Light foxing, some discoloration along folds. Very good, untrimmed, floated between two panes of glass in a 21 x 15 1/2-inch wood frame. A very rare Massachusetts variant of a merchant marine-related broadsheet, printing the 1790 act regulating merchant seamen on the recto and a blank form of agreement between a ship's master and seamen on the verso. The ACT FOR THE GOVERNMENT AND REGULATION OF SEAMEN IN THE MERCHANTS' SERVICE. of 1790 was an early federal law requiring strict contracts to be signed and followed by a ship's master and his crew for interstate voyages. Between about 1795 and 1800, the law was printed with a blank agreement form on the verso in several American port cities. These broadsheets are all quite rare, with only one recorded copy of the present example, which is held by the American Antiquarian Society. The form in the present copy is filled out for the Schooner Theada, bound from Boston to Baltimore and back in 1798, and includes signatures and wage agreements for the master, his mate, four hands, a cook, and a boy. First Edition of a classic of North American travel. Hearne's journal holds an especially honoured place in the annals of Arctic exploration, and Hearne "will always be remembered as the first white man that ever gazed on the dreary expanse of the Arctic or Frozen Ocean from the northern shores of the Continent of America." (Rich) In 1769, he was sent by the Hudson's Bay Company to find a north-west passage from Hudson's Bay and to investigate Indian reports regarding the existence of copper deposits to the north. Hearne made two false starts, but on his third attempt, accompanied by the Chipewyan guide Matonabbie, he succeeded in crossing the Barren Lands and reached the Coppermine River, which he descended to the Arctic Coast. Hearne also discovered the Great Slave Lake and recorded valuable information regarding the natural history and Indian tribes of the region traversed. Shortly following his return, Hearne submitted his report to the Hudson's Bay Company, who kept it secret for some thirteen years. Its final publication, three years after his death, was due to the celebrated French navigator La Pérouse, who found Hearne's manuscript when he captured Fort Albany, Hudson's Bay, in 1781-82. When Fort Albany was subsequently surrendered to the British, La Pérouse stipulated, as one of the conditions of the surrender, that Hearne's manuscript be printed. Bell H94. Cox I p. 171.         Plate 7 from A Botanical Description of the British Marine Plants

Bath: S. Hazard, 1795 - John Stackhouse (1742-1819) Nereis Britannica; or A Botanical Description of the British Marine Plants Bath: S. Hazard, 1795 Hand-colored copperplate engraving 14 3/4” x 20 1/2” framed John Stackhouse was born at Trehane, Cornwall in 1742. He attended Oxford in 1758, eventually studying marine biology in the Mediterranean. He was particularly interested in seaweed and other marine plant life. He married Susanna Acton in 1773. Shortly thereafter the pair decided to build a house on the southern coast of England around Cuddon Point so that John could continue his study of seaweed. Later, he moved to the coastal area now known as Stackhouse Cove, and in honor of his wife, built Acton Castle. He was elected as one of the earliest members of the Linnean Society in 1795. In 1795 his studies and illustrations of seaweed of the Southern coast of England culminated in his publication of Nereis Brittanica or A Botanical Description of the British Marine Plants in Latin and English, Accompanied with Drawings from Nature. This unusual and rare work is the first English volume devoted marine plant life. It is also important in the field of marine biology for Stackhouse’s new approach to classifying the plants. The outstanding hand-colored copperplates were engraved from drawings by both Stackhouse and Thomas Velley.

        Valley of Glencoe

Published by Robert Andrew Riddell, London 1795 - A fine plate of the scenic mountains of Glencoe in the Highlands of western Scotland. This beautiful image is most likely part of a pair prints depicting Glencoe that Riddell published in 1795. Robert Andrew Riddell was a landscape painter, who primarily depicted the scenic topography of Scotland in watercolour. He exhibited one of his works at the Royal Academy in 1793 and gave several of his paintings to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Archibald Robertson (1765-1835) was a Scottish artist, very talented in both painting and printmaking, who immigrated to America around 1796 (soon after this print was published) where he had a successful career painting miniature portraits on ivory. He also produced a number of topographical prints of New York City places: "Collect Pond" of 1798 among others. A number of his miniature portraits are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. This early work of the Highland valley Glen Coe is an extraordinarily fine landscape print, aesthetically superior to Robertson's American prints, and a fine example of colour printed aquatint. Colour-printed aquatint. Full inscription at bottom of print reads: 'To the Most Noble George Marquis of Tweedale & this View of the Valley of Glencoe is respectfully Inscribed by His Lordships most obedient Humble Servant.' Very good condition apart from some light soiling, minor foxing, and several small losses in the margins.

A View of the Causes and Progress of the French Revolution

London - G. G. and J. Robinson 1795 - The very scarce first edition of this history of the French Revolution by John Moore. First edition. John Moore (1729-1802) was a physician, writer and Presbyterian minister. In 1795 Moore published A View of the Causes and Progress of the French Revolution (2 vols. ), which assesses the financial conditions that led to events in 1789. (ODNB)Ex-libris armorial bookplates of John Fowlesto front pastedown. John Robert Fowles (31 March 1926 5 November 2005) was an English novelist, much influenced by both Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, and critically positioned between modernism and postmodernism. After leaving Oxford, Fowles taught at a school on the Greek island of Spetsai, a sojourn that inspired The Magus, an instant bestseller that was directly in tune with 1960s hippie anarchism and experimental philosophy. This was followed by The French Lieutenant's Woman, a period romance set in Lyme Regis, Dorset, another location in which Fowles was deeply absorbed. Later fictional works include The Ebony Tower, Daniel Martin, Mantissa, and A Maggot. Complete in two volumes. Condition: Rebound in half-calf bindings with marbled boards. Externally, generally smart, with just some slight rubbing to the extremities. One hinge slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Institutional ink stamp to verso of title page. Pages have some light age-toning and scattered foxing, but are otherwise bright. Some pages have slight chipping to the margins, not affecting the text. Overall: VERY GOOD.         A journey from Prince of Wales's Fort in Hudson's Bay to the northern ocean: Undertaken by order of the Hudson's Bay Company for the discovery of copper mines, a north west passage, &c. in the years 1769, 1770, 1771, & 1772.

Printed for A Strahan and T Cadell, London 1795 - xliv+458 pages with two (of four) engraved plates after drawings by the author (both folding) and four (of five) folding engraved maps. Quarto (11 3/4" x 9 3/4") bound in full leather with raised spine bands and gilt lettering to spine. (HillI, page 141. Sabin 31181) First edition. Manuscript journal was found by La Pérouse when he captured Fort Albany; later one of his conditions of surrender was that it be published. Samuel Hearne (1745 – November 1792) was an explorer, fur-trader, author, and naturalist. He was the first European to make an overland excursion across northern Canada to the Arctic Ocean In 1774 Hearne built Cumberland House for the Hudson’s Bay Company, its first interior trading post and the first permanent settlement in present Saskatchewan. From 1769 to 1772, Hearne was employed in north-western discovery, searching especially for certain copper mines described by Indians as "Far-Away-Metal River". These copper mines were found in the Barren Lands where the ground is permanently frozen to within a few inches of the surface, creating, in many areas, vast stretches of mosquito- and fly-infested swamp during the summer thaw. For this reason it was decided that travel in winter was preferable. His first attempt began on 6 November 1769. The large size of the expedition and too much European equipment being carried led to the desertion of his Indian guides and the failure of the expedition. His second, commencing 23 February 1770, failed because his quadrant was broken and much of his equipment was stolen. Learning from the mistakes of the first two expeditions Hearne contrived to travel as the only European with a group of Indians led by the great chief Matonabbee. The group also included eight of Matonabbee's wives to act as beasts of burden in the sledge traces, camp servants, and cooks. This third expedition set out in December 1770, in order to reach the Coppermine River in summer, by which he could descend to the Arctic in canoes. Matonabbee kept a fast pace, so fast they reached the great caribou traverse before provisions dwindled and in time for the spring hunt. Here all the Indian hunters of the north gathered to hunt the vast herds of caribou migrating north for summer. A store of meat was laid up for Hearne's voyage and a band of warriors joined the expedition. Matonabbee ordered the women to wait for his return in the Athabasca country to the west. The Chipewyans were generally a mild and peaceful people, however they were in a state of conflict with the Inuit. A great number of Indians joined Hearne's party to accompany them to the Coppermine River with intent to murder Inuit, who were understood to frequent that river in considerable numbers.[2] On July 14, 1771, they reached the Coppermine River, a small stream flowing over a rocky bed in the "Barren Lands of the Little Sticks". A few miles down the river, just above a cataract, were the domed wigwams of an Eskimo camp. At 1am on July 17, 1771 Matonabbee and the other Indians fell upon the sleeping Eskimo in a ruthless massacre. Approximately twenty men, women and children were killed; this would be known as the Massacre at Bloody Falls. A few days later Hearne was the first European to reach the shore of the Arctic Ocean by an overland route. By tracing the Coppermine River to the Arctic Ocean he had established there was no northwest passage through the continent at lower latitudes. This expedition also proved successful in its primary goal by discovering copper in the Coppermine River basin. However an intensive search of the area yielded only one four-pound lump of copper and commercial mining was not considered viable. Matonabbee led Hearne back to Churchill by a wide westward circle past Bear Lake in Athabasca Country. In midwinter he became the first European to see and cross Great Slave Lake. Hearne returned to Fort Prince of Wales on 30 June 1772 having walked some 5,000 miles and explored more than 250,000 square miles. Condition: Rebo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"Très belle édition" Cohen - De Ricci. A mock- epic poem on the subject of St. Joan, LA PUCELLE proved itself one of Voltaire's most infamous and popular works.         Journal of a Residence and Tour in the Republic of Mexico in the Year 1826. With some Account of the Mines of that Country

2 Volumes: viii+323 pages; iv+304+[i ad] pages with glossary. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5") in original paper covered boards and spine title labels as originally issued. From the library of Professor George M Foster. (Sabin:42852; Hill page 186) 1st edition.G F Lyon was an English traveler, born in Chichester, England, in 1795; died at sea in October, 1832. He entered the British naval service in 1809, was present at the attack on Algiers by Lord Exmouth in 1816, and in 1818 was commissioned to accompany Joseph Ritchie on his tour of exploration into central Africa. Ritchie died in Fezzan, and Lyon returned to England, after encountering many dangers and privations, which he described in his Narrative of Travels in Northern Africa (London, 1821). In 1821, in command of the Hecla, he accompanied Captain William E. Parry on his arctic expedition, publishing on his return The Private Journal of Captain G. F. Lyon (1824). In 1824 he sailed in command of the Griper' with the mission of exploring Melville peninsula, and following its western shore as far as Turn-again, he found, after three months' searching, a passage through the group of islets called Southampton island, but was unable to enter Repulse bay through Sir Thomas Rowe's Welcome. On 13 September, a violent tempest compelled him to return to England. The story of the voyage was told in A Brief Narrative of an Unsuccessful Attempt (1825). He subsequently passed several years in Mexico, and died on his return from a second visit to America. His remaining works are The SketchBook of Captain G. F. Lyon during Eighteen Months' Residence in Mexico, No. 1 (London, 1827), and Journal of a Residence and Tour in Mexico in 1828 (London, 1828).George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in. Condition:Spines renewed with original chipped spine labels laid on, front end papers chipped and damaged at edges, corners bumped and rubbed, Foster's stamp on end papers, old owner's signature on covers, internally near fine else over all very good.

Meine Duellgeschichte.

MEMOIRS OF THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED ... Translated from the French, by W. Hooper, M.A

Philadelphia: Printed by Thomas Dobson,. 1795. 12mo, pp. [i-v] vi-vii [viii-ix] x-xi [xii] [1] 2-360,. eighteenth-century full calf, red leather title piece.. Some darkening to edges of text block and some scattered foxing to. margins, but text block generally clean overall, a very good copy in. a nicely restored early American binding. (#109543). First U.S. edition. A translation of L'AN DEUX MILLE QUATRE CENT QUARANTE, first published in Amsterdam in 1771. "This first utopia set in future time was one of the eighteenth century's most successful books. It was immediately banned in France, put on the Inquisition's list of forbidden books in 1773, and condemned in Madrid in 1778 as a blasphemous work whose distributors, if discovered, would be fined five hundred ducats and sentenced to six years in prison. The Year 2440 had eleven editions in French between 1771 and 1799, as well as two English translations and translations into Dutch, Italian, and German. Investigation of its printing history leads Everett Wilkie to conclude that 'there were 18,000 copies in print in three languages by the end of 1772 and 30,000 copies by the end of 1782, at which point it had spread thoroughly over Europe ... 63,000 copies had been printed by Mercier's death' in 1814. The book was less successful across the Atlantic, but a 1795 Philadelphia edition was 'nevertheless, the first utopian novel published in North America.' George Washington and Thomas Jefferson owned copies of The Year 2440." - Alkon, Origins of Futuristic Fiction, p. 117. "... although the earliest specimens of futuristic fiction were in English, the glory of discovering the true potentialities of the genre belongs to the French -- to Sebastien Mercier who established the first satisfactory model of the new fiction ... The utopian prophecy of L'AN 2440, the first influential story of the future in world literature, became one of the most widely read books in the last quarter of the eighteenth century. The translations into Dutch and German, the English and American editions, and the many imitations show how Mercier beguiled his readers in two continents with the vision of a dream come true." - Clarke, The Pattern of Expectation 1644-2001, p. 23.         A narrative of the British embassy to China, in the years 1792, 1793, and 1794; containing the various circumstances of the embassy, with accounts of customs and manners of the Chinese, and a description of the country, towns, cities &c. &c. Basil, printed and sold by J.J. Tourneisen.

1795 - A scarce Swiss-printed edition of the account made by Aeneas Anderson of Macartney’s British embassy to Peking in 1792-1794. Printed in 1795, the same year as the London first edition, the swift publication of this work in Basel shows that there was widespread interest in news of the embassy to China not only in Britain, but also in continental Europe. This was the first account of the embassy to be published and as Macartney’s personal servant Anderson was well-placed to record the course of events, which ended in disappointment for the British. In addition to a chronological description Anderson provides a “list of the gentlemen who composed the retinue of Earl Macartney”, an appendix containing “an account of the transactions of the squadron during the absence of the embassy, till their return on board his Majesty’s ship the Lion at Wampoa” and a short “glossary of Chinese words”. Anderson was assisted in preparing the work by the writer William Combe (1742-1823). ESTC lists 6 copies only of this edition (bE; eBINs; nCHS; nCSmH; nMiEM; nPU).         [Portrait of Angelica Kauffman and Family]

1795. An exceedingly rare self/family portrait by Raphael Morghen after a painting by Angelica Kauffman. Though the whereabouts of the original painting is not known, this is clearly a self-portrait of Angelica Kauffman (seated) with what appear to be two grown children and a son-in-law. She holds what is perhaps a portrait of her second husband, Francesco Zucchi, who died in 1795. Her children would have to have been from her unhappy first marriage. There is no title but rather a text in French about how virtue is instilled in children. This impressive portrait was painted by the celebrated artist Angelica Kauffman and engraved by the renowned Italian printmaker Raphael Morghen. Kauffman was a child prodigy, who executed her first commissioned work before the age of thirteen. As a child she traveled through Austria and Italy with her father, the painter Joseph Kauffman. She assisted him by painting the backgrounds of his works, but she quickly received her own commissions and established a reputation for herself as an accomplished painter. In 1766 she traveled to London, where she painted portraits and decorative paintings. She was a close friend of Reynolds and was one of the first female members of the British Royal Academy. Goethe called her "the most accomplished woman in Europe". Raphael Morghen received his first artistic training from his father, the accomplished engraver Filippo Morghen. Like Kauffman, Morghen was also a child prodigy, publishing his first engraving at the age of twelve. By the age of twenty he had established himself as one of the premiere engravers in Europe allowing him to garner countless commissions. He worked in Naples, Rome and Florence and produced over two hundred and fifty prints during his prolific career. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs. Engraving. Printed on laid paper. Collector mark bearing the initials E.O printed in blue ink on verso of sheet. In excellent condition. Image size: 22 x 15 1/16 inches.
