        Essays on Philosophical Subjects

London: for T. Cadell Jun., W. Davies, and W. Creech in Edinburgh,, 1795. To which is prefixed, an Account of the Life and Writings of the Author; by Dugald Stewart, F.R.S.E. Quarto (300 × 230 mm). Uncut in the original publisher's boards, unlettered paper spine label. Ownership inscription "Spencer Boyd" at head of title page. Joints cracking but firm. An excellent, uncut copy. First edition, published five years after Smith's death, edited by Dugald Stewart with his "Account of the life and writings of Adam Smith", originally presented to the Royal Society of Edinburgh in two sessions during 1793. The editor states that the essays were intended as parts of "a connected history of the liberal sciences and elegant arts", but that Smith "long since... found it necessary to abandon that plan as far too extensive". The essays range over philosophy, aesthetics and the history of science. Most were probably written before the appearance of the Theory of Moral Sentiments in 1759, but were withheld from publication as part of Smith's "extensive plan".

Letters to a German Princess (On different subjects in physics and philosophy)

Henry Hunter & H. Murray, 1795, Hardcover, Book Condition: GoodFirst English translation of Euler's letters to the Princess of Anhalt-Dessau, niece to Frederick the Great of Prussia. The publication of these letters, over 200 in total, was well received and reached a audience beyond his mathematical works, becoming, perhaps, the first example of popularizing science for the layman. Euler tackles subjects physical and spiritual, revealing his own beliefs and predilections along the way. This translation is interesting for Hunter's footnote defence of Newton's theory of Light, which Euler had criticised. Contemporary half leather with marbled boards. Speckled edge design has kept contents clean and unsoiled. One or two brief penciled notes in margin. Binding is tight and square with very slight bowing to boards. Pleasing gilt to spine, slight rubbing and cracking to hinge. Overall a tight and attractive set, Book

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, TO BENJAMIN WEST].

Paris. April 12, . 1795 - One sheet, 9 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches. Old fold lines, though very faint. Chipped along left side of sheet, not affecting text. Minor tears along fold lines on right side; small tear along right side affecting, though without loss to, text. Bright and clean. Very good. Letter written by Trumbull to his friend and instructor, painter Benjamin West, regarding the purchase of several paintings. It was written during Trumbull's time as John Jay's secretary on the Jay Treaty Commission, after he had been sent to France to discuss the Treaty with James Monroe, the United States minister to France. Trumbull was delayed in France, awaiting orders, and filled his time by collecting art with the help of connoisseur Jean- Baptiste Pierre Lebrun. The letter, sent from Paris, reads: "Dear Sir, You recollect my asking your opinion with respect to the prudence of purchasing pictures at present. I have been tempted to purchase a number which are now packing up to be sent forward as soon as possible, and I hope soon to have the pleasure of shewing you several such as we seldom see. Among them is a large landscape by Berghem [probably the Dutch painter Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem], clear and beautiful as Claude. It is allowed here to have no equal among his works except one which is in the National Museum - a small picture by Nicholas Poussin, Christ in the Garden of Olives, the most beautiful thing I ever saw - a small picture a Religious Allegory by Guido - a St. John by Murillos - a Virgin, Child & Angels by Schidone - another by Augustin Carrache, a Magdalen by Carlo Dolci, another by LeSoeur - a Holy Family small & beautiful by Nicholas Poussin - Two capital Landscapes by Salvater - two capital pictures by Teniers, &c &c. They have been bought with the assistance of LeBrun's Judgment, and are most of them from celebrated collections. I have directed them to remain in the King's Warehouse until I arrive which I hope will be in five or six weeks." This letter provides an insight into Trumbull's own collecting interest and artistic influences. Hailed as the official painter of the Revolution, Trumbull studied painting and art in England and France. The youngest son of the governor of Connecticut, the elder John Trumbull very much wanted his son to go into law. Trumbull did study the law, but gladly joined the fight against the British when the Revolution broke out. He eventually served as Washington's second aide-de- campe, having been brought to the General's attention through some very accurate drawings he had made of British gun emplacements. He rose to the rank of colonel as a deputy adjutant- general, but resigned the commission he finally received because it was dated three months late, a slight his honor could not tolerate. He refused to return to the law, finding it quite distasteful, and chose instead to pursue his true passion, art, against his family's wishes. Though he was never particularly wealthy in this pursuit, he did achieve a certain amount of success in his own lifetime. Among his most famous works are those commissioned in 1817 by Congress to adorn the Capitol building: "The Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga," "The Surrender of General Cornwallis at Yorktown," "The Declaration of Independence," and "The Resignation of General Washington." DAB XIX, pp.11-15. Helen A. Cooper, JOHN TRUMBULL: THE HAND AND SPIRIT OF A PAINTER (Yale, 1982), pp.10-11.

Picturesque Views on the Uppper, or Warwickshire, Avon

sp; - London - Faulter; and Egerton9.5by 7; (xviii)248[32]pp. 1795 - A beautiful illustrated tour of the upper Avon by the somewhat notorious Samuel Ireland. Ireland (1744-1800) was a writer and engraver who is best remembered for his (initially unwitting) involvement in the Ireland Shakespeare Forgeries (so named for the principal perpetrator, his son William). It is unfortunate that this fatefulblemish overshadows his reputation insofar as his concerted dailyefforts led tothe publication ofhis celebrated'Picturesque Views' series. These editions were illustrated with engravings based on drawings done on site, and contextualised with descriptive text detailing Ireland's progress through the area in question. Here we have a lovely rebacked edition of Picturesque Views on the Upper Avon, retaining the original diced calf boards, and collated complete with 32 illustrations (including frontispiece) and map. Condition: Externally, rebacked in calf using old diced calf boards. Sound with slight rubbing. Lovely patina, with corniced borders and contrasting label. Some wear to extremities and rubbing to boards. Internally, hinges slightly strained but firm. Firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, with only some handling marks and marginal browning, and light foxing to preliminaries (protective sheet has taken the brunt of the damage for the frontispiece plate). Lovely marbled endpapers, with tidemarks and binder's stamp (Whitehead of Coventry) to top edges. Overall: VERY GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Deutschlands Insectenfaune oder entomologisches Taschenbuch für das Jahr 1795 (OR) Entomologia Germanica exhibens Insecta per Germaniam indigena secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, adiectis synonymis, locis, observationibus. I. Eleuterata. Cum tabulis aenis

Nürnberg, Felschecker, [1795]. Small 8vo. [viii], 372 pp. Engraved frontispiece, two title pages, 12 partly hand-coloured engraved plates with explanatory text leaves. Contemporary (original?) pictorial paper covered boards.* The first title of this early contribution by Panzer suggests an entirely different work, namely a yearly calendar of the occurrence of German insects, however, this remains restricted to a table for the month of January, each day given the name of an entomologist or naturalist writer. The rest of the book, including the fine, detailed, and partly coloured plates, deals with German (ground) beetles ["Eleuterata"], including many new species. The frontispiece, by A. W. Kützner, dated 1794, shows the god, Pan. None of the bibliographers mention the frontispiece and indeed we have seen copies without it. Boards rubbed, especially at joints, with some paper loss. A few light pencil notes in the margins, otherwise a very good copy. Rare. Hagen II, p. 27; Horn-Schenkling, 16729; Nissen ZBI, 3086.

        ODES

Paris: Chez Du Pont, 1795. n. Hardcover. 171 x 102 mm (6 3/4 x 4"). 1 p.l. (half title), 178, v pp. Translation and notes attributed to Pierre Hubert Anson. FINE CONTEMPORARY BLACK STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, GILT, BY BOZERIAN (stamp-signed at foot of spine), covers framed with undulating grape vine enclosed by double rules, starburst cornerpieces, raised bands, spine gilt in densely stippled compartments with gilt leaves and flowers emanating from central inlaid red morocco dot, turn-ins with gilt bead and star roll, pink watered silk endleaves embellished with their own cresting floral border, all edges gilt. A Large Paper Copy. Verso of front free endpaper with bookplate of Raoul Simonson (and faint dampstain under it, indicating the removal of a previous one). One faint scratch on back cover, but AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY, the text clean, smooth, and bright, and IN AN UNWORN, SPARKLING BINDING. Lavish and elegant, this lovely binding is a typical specimen from the Bozerian atelier, notable for both its technical precision and aesthetic feeling. The volume is wonderfully refined in the way it combines restraint and fancy, being at once animated, graceful, and polished. The beautiful grapevine frame seen on the present covers was often used by the Bozerians (see, for example, item #175 in the Schiff Collection of signed French bindings), and a special feature here is the gilt-embellished silk endleaves that the Parisian binders were among the first to introduce--a luxurious touch for their discriminating clientele. Active in Paris during the first quarter of the 19th century, the Bozerian binderies produced many fine books that are praised today especially for their technical achievement and elegance of design. François Bozerian, generally called Bozerian le jeune (1765-ca. 1818), was known to have worked from just after the turn of the century until his death, and for much of that time, he worked with his elder brother Jean-Claude (1762-1840). Among other distinguished work, the Bozerians did a considerable number of bindings for the Imperial Library at the instigation of Joseph Van Praet, the librarian responsible for building much of the original collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale. Their bindings very often are signed, but even when they are not, their trademark features are apparent, as here: the covers generally have a frame comprising one broad and elegant roll, and the spines typically have seven compartments (including a very narrow one at the bottom), with the majority containing densely massed tools and stippling around an open circle or other small central figure. Our volume comes from the collection of the eminent Belgian bibliophile Raoul Simonson (1896-1965), who was so particular when it came to condition that his fellow collectors began referring to exceedingly fine copies as "in Belgian state." Simonson's library was known for being impeccable in its appearance and substantial in its literary quality, and it is obvious how the present item would fit comfortably into his collection.

I. Hollandische Infanterie. - II. Hollandische Infanterie. Scheeper Rgt. - III. Hollandische Leib Garden. - IV.         Essays on Philosophical Subjects... To which is Prefixed, an Account of the Life and Writings of the Author; by Dugald Stewart

London: T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, and W. Creech, Edinburgh, 1795.. First edition. 4to. xcvi, 244 pp. Contemporary tan calf, sometime rebacked to style, gilt lettered black label, elegant ruled geometric design to both boards with small floral devices at the corners and intersections, slightly later prize inscription from James Pillans on behalf of James VI College (University of Edinburgh) to a Henrico (Henry) Davidson, endpapers and all edges marbled. A lovely copy. Published posthumously, Smith had instructed his executors to destroy 16 volumes of his manuscripts just before his demise so as to concentrate readers' attention on his most famous works "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" and the "Wealth Of Nations". Nonetheless his friends deemed that Smith's desire for them to be destroyed should be overridden as his concern with his posthumous reputation was an "excessive solicitude" and that the essays contained herein were of sufficient quality to be published. In the preface the editors Joseph Black and John Hutton conclude that "though it is difficult to add much to the great fame he most justly acquired by his other writings, these will be read with satisfaction and pleasure".

Summary: First published in 1770 and running to over one million words, Raynal's "Historie philosophique et politique des etablissements des Europeens dans les Deux Indes" was an immediate bestseller that was to go through numerous editions in various languages. Taking a radical anti-imperialistic stance, the nineteen books that comprised the original work covered the history of European colonisation of India, the East Indies, China, parts of Africa, and the Americas. Much of the success, and subsequent reputation, of the Histoire was based on its attacks on tyranny, slavery and colonial exploitation, and it quickly became one of the basic texts for the humanitarian movement.

The American Criterion of the English Language; Containing the Elements of Pronunciation; in Five Sections. For the Use of English Schools and Foreigners

New London, Connecticut: Samuel Green. 1795. 12mo (16 cm). F First Edition. H Hard Cover. Good. First edition. Early American imprint (1795) with emphasis on American pronunciation of the English language. The author, in the preface, recognizes distinct regional differences even within the American mode of speech - "The pronunciation of the southern states of English America is almost as different from that of the New-England states, even among the learned, as any two dialects of the language of any illiterate nation can be supposed to be : and yet both those parts of America abound with men of bright genius, large mental capacities and profound learning". The author also recognizes the diaparity between the written and spoken English language, and attempts to teach new English readers a consistent method of pronunciation based on a system of rules set forth in the book. Paper covered wooden boards with calf spine, ix, (2), 12-119, (1)p., with the final page citing errata. Free endpapers absent, otherwise a complete copy with age-toned pages free from chips or tears other than one page with a 3mm internal chip toward the bottom barely affecting the text on one page. Externally worn, with the paper covering quite chipped and exposing the wood, front hinge cracked. This is most likely its original, inexpensive binding, in unrestored condition. Text block sound with no loosened pages. Old stamp from what may have been an academic library (not identified) on front pastedown. Rare.

The Insects of Great Britain, systematically arranged, accurately engraved, and painted from nature, with the natural history of each species.

Les Insects de la Grande Brétagne rangés dans un ordre systématique, gravés avec soin, et peints d'après nature. London, J. Johnson, 1795. 4to (278 x 210mm). pp. 97, (3), with 46 handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary red half morocco, spine with gilt lines and lettering. Lewin planned to publish a comprehensive work on the insects of Great Britain, however, only one volume appeared due to the death of the author. "Lewin conceived the ambition to publish a comprehensive, illustrated work on 'The Insects of Great Britain'. In the event, his untimely death prevented the completion of all but the first volume on 'Papilios', which contains significantly more species of butterflies, together with their early stages, than works by previous authors: in present day terms, some 62 species plus three recognized forms... Lewin was also the first author to follow the strict order of families, and to use Linnaean names consistently..." (M.A. Salmon. The Aurelian legacy p. 122).         Deutschlands Insectenfaune oder entomologisches Taschenbuch für das Jahr 1795 (OR) Entomologia Germanica exhibens Insecta per Germaniam indigena secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, adiectis synonymis, locis, observationibus. I. Eleuterata. Cum tabulis aenis.

. 27; Horn-Schenkling, 16729; Nissen ZBI, 3086..

Esquisse d'un tableau historique des progrès de l'esprit humain. Ouvrage posthume de Condorcet

Paris: "Agasse, ans III". [1795.]. "Second edition, 8vo, pp. viii, 389; contemporary full calf, black morocco label on gilt-decorated spine; front joint cracked, else good. See PMM 246: ""It was the gospel of the nineteenth century that mankind is destined for indefinite future progress. Condorcet [1743-1794], looking back and then forward, saw proof of this in the growing equality between classes and nations, the intellectual, physical and moral improvement of man; and he prophesied that popular education on correct principles would strengthen and assure this progress. In the Esquisse [ëAn Historical Outline of the Progress of the Human Mindí], published after his death, Condorcet traces the history of man through epochs, the first three covering his progress from savagery to pastoral community and thence to the agricultural state. The next five span the growth of civilizations and knowledge down to Descartes, and the ninth describes the revolution of Condorcetís own lifetime, from Newton to Rousseau. The prophetic view of the tenth epoch shows Condorcet at his most original. He forecasts the destruction of inequality between nations and classes, and the improvement, intellectual, moral and physical of human nature it is as the most fully developed exposition of the progress of man that Condorcetís work is now remembered, and it is this which has given its lasting appeal."""
