Ideas for Rustic Furniture
on 25 Plates. 25 gest. Tafeln (inkl. Titel), meist mit etwas Aquatinta. London, Printed for I. & J. Taylor, at the Architectural Library Holborn, (um 1794). Gr.-8vo. (24,5 x 15,5 cm). - "There is a great consistency about the style of all these pieces. All have a delicate and ordered rusticity - what has been descibed as a 'regular twiginess'. All of the wooden framing elements are made from what appear to be thin, untrimmed branches. The branches of some pieces are nailed together, but more often they are lashed together with rope. Many of the chair and settee backs are 'woven' out of one or two unnaturally long branches." (Heckscher). [Click Below for Full Description]

Saunders, Daniel, Jr.
Thomas C. Cushing,, Salem, 1794. 12mo contemporary calf, 128,15 pp. Binding worn and scuffed with a couple of cracks, staining to rear cover: front free endpaper and several text leaves sprung, some pages appear at slight angle. Browning, some foxing and soiling, some short edge tears and folds, early owner’s ink signature on rear endpaper. The Commerce was caught in a typhoon in the Indian Ocean, and went down on route to India off the Arabian Coast. The journal tells of a story of many hardships, which left only eight survivors. Saunders tells of having to leave men behind, including the ship’s captain Samuel Johnson, because they were too weak to continue. He tells of a rescue by Bedouins, but describes the people they met along the way as "insusceptible of pity". According to Saunders one good thing he could say about the people was that they weren’t violent when they robbed you. The story does have a happy ending of sorts, in that Saunders was reunited with Robert Williams and Captain Samuel Johnson, who were two of the crew they had left behind and presumed to be dead, but had somehow managed to survive. The work includes a fifteen page appendix, which presents the earliest American description of Arabia. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Cumberland, Richard
London: Printed for C. Dilly, 1794. First edition. poor to vg-. Octavo. (2) 75pp. (1). Disbound. Book block only. The publication is the printed version of Richard Cumberland's comedic play "The Jew", also known as "Sheva, the Benevolent". It was premiered in May 1794, at the Theatre-Royal in London. The play tells the story of a benevolent Jewish moneylender named Sheva, and his attempt to financially assist a newly married man named Frederick and his friend Charles. The work is historically and culturally significant, as it was the first British theater production to feature a Jewish moneylender as a heroic character, and upended the until then, usually negative and anti-Semitic portrayal of Jewish characters in English literature. The production went on to successful runs in a number of American cities including Boston, Philadelphia and New York. Book block tight overall. Title page with some smudges and a few closed tears near the spine. Sporadic minor foxing throughout. Interior in very good- condition overall.

The full text of the title page describes the contents of the publication in detail: "Part first contains, the secrets of generation, in all the parts thereof: treating, of the benefit of marriage, and the prejudice of unequal matches: -- signs of insufficiency in men or women: -- of the infusion of the soul: -- of the likeness of children to parents: -- of monstrous births -- the cause and cure of the monthly-courses: -- of virginity: -- directions and cautions for midwives: --o f the organs of generation in women, and the fabric of the womb: -- the use and action of the genitals: -- signs of conception, and whether a male or female; with a word of advice to both sexes, in the act of copulation. And the pictures of several monstrous births, &c. The second part being a private looking-glass for the female sex. Treating of the various maladies of the womb, and all other distempers incident to women of all ages; with proper remedies for the cure of each: The whole being more correct than any thing of this kind hitherto published." Montgey. - Poirier.
Exemplaire en parfait état, PERFECT COPY [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Chladni, Ernst Florenz Friedrich:
Riga, Hartknoch 1794. 1 Bl., II, 63 S. 8°. - "Very rare. Considered one of the foundation works of modern meteoritic studies ... However, at the start of the text Chladni asserts unequivocally that the fireballs sometimes seen in the sky consisted of compact and heavy matter, which came from cosmic space, and that the iron mass found by Pallas in Siberia was a meteorite similar to others that had sporadically fallen in other parts of Europe. Chladni then convincingly presents his evidence for this assertion" (www.minrec.org).
