WALKER (Ralph), of Jamaica
London: Printed by R. Hindmarsh.Sold by George Adams. Large 8vo, 208 x 124 mms., pp. 9 [10 blank, 11 - 12 Contents], [9] - 226, 7 folding engraved plates, recently rebound in quarter calf, marbled boards, gilt spine, red leather labels; lacking the final leaf with the directions to the binder, but a very good copy. "In 1794 Ralph Walker 'of Jamaica' travelled to London 'for the purpose of laying my meridional and azimuth compass, and improvements upon compasses in general, before the Board of Longitude. Although Walker was a seaman and his inventive capacities were directed towards navigational problems, he included in his Treatise on Magnetism an appendix on land surveying. He felt it his duty to Jamaica and the West Indies, he said, 'to point out what advantage this improvement in compasses may be of, respecting the surveying of lands, and fixing the boundaries of estates and new settlements.' The burden of Walker's advice rested on his calculation of magnetic variation over time" (Higman: Jamaica Surveyed). The work was noticed in The Critical Review for 1794, but with only a cursory assessment of Walker's book. The British Critic, and Quarterly Theological Review for 1795 was sympathetic to Walker's undertaking: "Some faults might be pointed out in Mr. Walker's style, but he must be a very ill-natured critic who should notice a few blemishes in a work written principall for those whose minds are very little cultivated, and which conveys information of very general importance." A Paris, Chez Belin, Volland, Gueffier, Prault, Rondonneau & compagnie, L'An II de la République (1794). 3 volumes. 8vo. Contemporary marbled calf, spines gilt with red and green labels with gilt lettering, lightly rubbed and some small imperfections. Not in Kress; Goldsmiths 16029; Martin & Walter, Anonymes, 17454. Complete set. The Law of the Maximum, legislation that established a partially controlled economy during the year II. It was the second of three primary maximum degrees. It aimed at fixing the prices of wheat and flour (maximum of 4 May 1793), the maximum of 29 September 1794 fixed both prices and wages over a wide spectrum of primary commodities and production, the third, the maximum of 24 February 1794, replaced the local prices of the second maximum with a schedule of national prices. On 24 December 1794 the Thermidorians disestablished this system of price and wage controls. These were the basic laws of a complex of degrees and a torrent of administrative reporting that included not just fixed prices but administratively controlled distribution as well, all of it directed theoretically from Paris by the Commission of Subsistence and Provisions and backed by the authority of the Committee of Public Safety.Volume I: Alimens, boissons, épiceries, et drogueries. FICHTE, IOHANN GOTTLIEB. - [THE FOUNDATIONAL SYSTEM OF HUMAN KNOWLEDGE - PMM 244]
Weimar, 1794. Small 8vo. Bound in a very nice recent half leather binding of red morocco w. gilt title to spine, red marbled paper over boards. A very nice and clean copy. 68 pp. (pp. I-VIII + (9) - 68). ¶ The rare first edition of Fichte's main work, in which he coins the word "Wissenschaftslehre" (science of knowledge) and introduces his philosophy in general; the work is generally accepted as being one of the most important works of German idealism, as well as of the philosophy of the Romantic era. In the beginning of the 1790'ies Fichte wrote the work "Versuch einer Kritik aller Offenbahrung", which Kant approved of and found a publisher for. The work appeared without mention of author on the title-page, and the work was immediately ascribed to Kant, -a better mistake could not have happened for Fichte, and when Kant corrected it, Fichte's reputation was secured. Already at the end of 1793 he was offered a chair teaching philosophy at the University of Jena. It was here in Jena that he wrote the work that became his most important and influential, his seminal "Ueber den Begriff der Wissenschaftslehre", which came to hugely influence epistemological philosophy throughout the 19th century."In this perfected "Wissenschaftslehre" the way is prepared for all the later Hegelian dialectic. If Kant had opened up the path which German, and indeed all, philosophy was to take in the nineteenth century, the credit for the complete description of its subject-matter belongs to Fichte." (PMM 244).Fichte represented a more radical version of Kant's philosophy, in which he, in direct op … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANTO, Kyoden, known also as the illustrator KITAO, Masanobu
15 double-page woodcut illus. 37 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. green wrappers (rubbed), orig. woodcut title slip on upper cover (slip partly defective), new stitching. Edo: Tsutaya Juzaburo, 1794.First edition and very rare; no copy in WorldCat. This is an important and early example of mitate-e, a type of ukiyo-e which used subtle puns, allusions, and incongruities to parody classical arts or events; the illustrations and texts can be understood at various levels and ways. Timothy Clark has described mitate-e as a technique of "bizarre, brain-teasing collisions."Santo (1761-1816), a member of the Kitao School, was equally famous as a novelist and an artist; his works were mostly in a humorous vein. In this book, he produced both the text and illustrations. His writings exhibit comedic skills and linguistic gymnastics; he was one of the first writers of fiction in Japan to earn a living from his pen. Each double-page illustration depicts rather similar scenes on facing pages but with completely different stories and meanings. For instance, the sixth double-page illustration shows on the right-hand side an eloping couple (Ohan being carried "piggyback" by Chouemon) next to the Katsura River, intending to commit suicide. On the left-hand side is a depiction of Zenko Honda who is carrying on his back the Amidanyorai statue en route to found the Zenkoji Temple. In each of the fifteen pairings, Santo has cleverly juxtaposed similar scenes but using completely different styles (ukiyo-e versus Chinese nanga), meanings, typography, types of poetry, and images. Each illustratio … [Click Below for Full Description]

THUNBERG, C.P.
Uppsala, J.F. Erdman, 1794-1805. Folio (430 x 275mm). Only 10 of 50 engraved plates, loose. The 10 plates are from the first edition of Thunberg's rare sequel and counterpart to his 'Flora Japonica' (1784). This work contains some of the first Western illustrations of Japanese species, and is a landmark work, along with the 'Flora', for the Linnaean botany of Japan. Thunberg visited Japan disguised as a Dutchman. He was confined to the Dutch trading post built on a tiny artificial island, and was reduced to examining the forage plants brought from the mainland to feed the domestic animals. He was able to make only limited excursions to the mainland, but nonetheless managed to assemble a remarkable accurate picture of the Japanese flora. The 'Icones' illustrates 'inter alia' several Japanese species of 'Acer', including the highly variable 'Acer palmarum', here illustrated for the first time. The following plates are depicted: Arum Serratum; Salix japonica; Scilla japonica; Sterculla tomentofa; Ilex japonica; Celastrus alatus; Prenanthes debilis; Arnica japonica; Rubus palmatus; Quercus glabra. The last plate with small marginal paper damage. The plates are uncut.Nissen BBI, 1960; Stafleu & Cowan 14364. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Cooper, Thomas]
London, 1794. [2], 17 pp, as issued. Mild toning, Very Good. In modern marbled wrappers, with printed title label pasted on front wrapper. Housed in an attractive quarter morocco slipcase. As a young adult in his native England, "Cooper was intimately involved in contemporary political issues. He became well-known as a lawyer of radical political sentiments." Warned "against seditious speech, Cooper visited the United States in 1793 to prepare a haven for English dissenters. Cooper and his family soon made their visit to the United States permanent by moving to Northumberland, Pennsylvania in 1794." ['Penn Biographies', online archives.upenn.edu]. Here he arranged for the anonymous publication of this pamphlet, encouraging emigration of persons seeking "asylum from civil persecution and religious intolerance"-- "opponents of the present government in England, as being inconsistent with the principles of liberty, and... opponents also of the slave- trade." Since most such prospective emigrants opposed slavery, he advises against settling in the Deep South and assures them that land and opportunity abound elsewhere. Cooper examines advantages and disadvantages of all the States-- focusing particularly on economic opportunity, slavery, climate, land costs, and amenities. Eberstadt summarizes: "Describes the respective merits of lands and inducements to settlement in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky. The latter two territories, while offering many advantages, are deemed unsafe because of the frequent Indian incursions." Cooper conc … [Click Below for Full Description]

DANCER, W
1794. 18th century bound quarto manuscript of the great buildings of England, 574 numbered pages + 3 blank leaves ( page 137/8 absent but probably no text missing). Contemporary half calf morocco labels, rubbed, board detached. Contents clear and very legible written on thick watermarked paper. The buildings are sub-divided into their respective counties, many pages with only county headings tantalisingly yet to be filled in. The first section - KENT - is 98 pages long, and one is bound to assume the author lived here, perhaps in Rochester. (the entry for Rochester Castle runs to 10 pages). Entries comprise historical records and architectural descriptions. The author leans on earlier antiquarians such as Leland and Camden, sometimes with direct quotes. What makes the work of unusual interest is that many of the sites were clearly visited by the author in the late eighteenth century. One has only to see, for instance the extraordinarily precise measurements for the alleged Dark Age monument, Kit's Coty House (pp 34-35), to observe the author's keenness for detail. Here are a few further examples : 1) Rochester Castle, having been granted to Sir Anthony Welldone in 1610,had its timbers sold by one of his descendants 'to one Grimmet and the stone stairs the ... windows and arches to different masons in London.' But his plan to sell the 'whole of the materials' to a pavier was foiled by the discovery of the extreme hardness of the mortar. An essay 'on the east side near the postern leading to Bully Hill' can still be seen. Thus the castle escaped demolition. 2) At Evesham Ab … [Click Below for Full Description]

Published In Pennsylvania in 1794. 8vo (8 x 5 inches), rebound to period style in dark brown calf with leather and brass clasps, retaining the original rear board, (12) 675 (5), VERY GOOD copy of this rare edition of Menno Simon's work, with no recorded copies in OCLC. Ownership signature of Daniel Wilmerginhis from 1804 on title page, genealogical notices in pencil on p. 243 and again in pen covering births in the family from 1843-61 on o, 438, and some deaths on p. 538 from the 1870s-90s. With continuous pagination but a separate title page (again, no publisher's information) this also includes 'Eine gruendliche Unterweisung, oder Bericht von der Excommunication, Bann, Auschliessung, oder Absonderung der Kirche Christi...' This was a posthumously published work by Menno Simons, who died in 1561, the founder of the Mennonites. This appeared in a William Salloch catalog from 1988 for $400 with the following remarks: '6 leaves, 675 (5) pp. 8vo, contemporary calf, no clasps. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Menno Simons' principal work, the "Foundation and Plain Instruction of the Saving Doctrine of our Lord Jesus Christ", with other treatises, forming together the basics of the Mennonite doctrine. Bibliothek der Romane. (Hrsg. von H. A. O. Reichard und Anderen, u. a. C. A. Vulpius).
Berlin, Himburg und Riga, Hartknoch, 1778-1794. Vollständiges Exemplar der bedeutenden Roman- und Volksbuchsammlung sowie der bibliographisch wichtigen Edition. H.A.O.
